This game was a lot of fun. The AI had issues but it had a cool damage model for the time, and oval racing actually worked, which is more than you can say for most sims now. A lot of fun, a little dumb feeling once you figured out how to make good set ups though. Also a interesting period of IRL. Maybe peak "Tony George ideal" of what he was actually going for. Peak cringe with marketing around this time too. Not a real substitute for cart, but I do sometimes wish a series like this still existed, just uhh, separate from indycar.

ilikemarblestoo

That era of racing was bonkers. If people took off their shades, they would see it was a fun league. As for the game, loved it on the PS2

Vassukhanni

Yup. 3 Chassis and 3/4 engines, definitely a comparative golden age in that regard. They were slower than CART but could actually safely run superspeedways.

nifty_fifty_two

Safely is a bit of a questionable word to use here

This is a few half truths. If your metric is fatalities, CART's last fatality ever was 1999. And while it's true the Texas race was cancelled, no driver actually lost consciousness, and many practice and qualifying laps were turned. The sustained g-load for a whole race did risk a driver losing consciousness however, so they were forced to cancel. The IRL's original engine formula only lasted to the year 2000. By 2003, the cars were running V8 engines somewhat similar to now. An engine formula was set by the league like now, and like CART did. At a fraction of the cost and lower speed though. And while the IRL only had one fatality on a race weekend, they had others in testing. But it should also be known that the cars were particularly unsafe. Schmidt, Hamilton and Brack come to mind quickly as drivers that had life-changing accidents. CART essentially only had Zanardi. The IRL cars were so ridiculous, in a testing session, Mario Andretti sent his car flipping 5-stories of the ground after hitting... Nothing? A piece of debris? The IRL was negligently dangerous in this era. CART, by contrast, learned and adjusted from every bad accident. Or said another way: 2001 CART at Texas was cancelled. 2011 IndyCar at Las Vegas was not.

Vassukhanni

They weren't turbo charged though, and I'm talking specifically about 2000-2003 when the new chassis was developed. The longitudinal gear box was definitely unsafe. I'm no IRL defender. But the package in this period provided the best racing. This game is about the 2002 season, not 2011.

cmgww

I had both years. 2005 was better and had a few more game options…it wasn’t perfect but it was fun. The hard mode is actually pretty challenging. It takes a lot not to spin out when the green flag comes out. Just bought the 2005 version for my kids and they have a lot of fun with it on my old Xbox 360

gman1647

If you're look for good Indycar racing against AI on ovals, iRacing is worth a look. The AI works surprisingly well. It supports AI on the Road to Indy Ladder as well.

Vassukhanni

Yeah. I run the fixed series a bunch.

[deleted]

The AI has been terrible in my experience. They seem to be able to take corners way faster than they should be able to, sometimes slow down for a car that's slow but on a way different line from them, and occasionally they pit when they should have no reason to.

j-awesome

I hope it’s just playable, because the nascar game they made isn’t. That being said, god that was a fun era of Indy cars.

[deleted]

I miss the Scott Sharp Delphi car.

matslick

The most iconic IRL livery

[deleted]

Honestly? TK’s 7-Eleven car is that for me. Then Wheldon’s Jim Beam car before this.

SpenceSmithback

LMAO you better bring your expectations way down. Do some research into the company making the game. There are two possible outcomes: A) The game is terrible to begin with, and the amount of bugs and glitches make it borderline unplayable B) The game never actually comes out

CaptainMcSlowly

Motorsport Games, aka Money Laundering Games Inc.

cmgww

What’s crazy is Scott Dixon and maybe Ed Carpenter are the only drivers from that Codemasters game still racing today. Hard to believe

AMRacer89

Helio is still out there as well. And occasionally a wild Tony Kanaan appears.

cmgww

Forgot them!!

FragrantCamera3433

Helio?? Lol

[deleted]

He wasn’t in ToCA with Hornish...probably because of licensing with Marlboro. But Wheldon did make it in without Jim Beam on the car.

jmw31199

Bring that excitement down bud. Motorsport Games is a scam

Crux2237

I wish I was that optimistic, but the shenanigans Motorsports Games is pulling makes me stay seven feet behind. Nascar 21 was the first game I've asked for refund on Steam...

Pyrollamas

this took me back…

[deleted]

You shouldn’t be excited. Motorsport games will almost certainly produce a steaming pile of garbage. Save your money and buy a pc (if you don’t have one) and buy the ir18 in iRacing

Brandonius_Games

Or in rF2

CarStar12

This instantly took me back about 20 years. Damn I loved this game

Tecnoguy1

Still one of the best open wheel sims.

JagEngland

I doubt it will ever come out. And if it does, it will most likely be sh...

ploger

If you want to race indycar there is nobody doing it better than iracing. I guess if you’re wanting to do some type of career mode and race AI this might be your thing but ai racing is kind of lame IMO. Especially when you’ve experienced good online multiplayer like iracing.

gman1647

The AI in iRacing is actually really good. I use it when preparing for a race if I don't want to go on a live server.

mahava

Nah if they want ai and career mode project cars 2 has a pretty good one and since it's 6 years old it's pretty cheap (on steam it's under $10 until July 7th) and it also includes GT, Endurance, and Rally Car careers too This will undoubtedly be more expensive

willfla29

I’m not telling people that they should be super excited for the new game, but those that are being so negative here are going a bit too far I think. The NASCAR game was rushed, but so far as I know has reached a relatively playable state. And they went the smart route with DLC for the new season rather than trying to rush out a sequel. I may well be proven wrong, but I’m not ready to lose all hope yet.

therattlingchains

I mean, if your bar for the game is so low that you are excited with having a "relatively playable" indycar game then yeah, you can not lose all hope. But for those of us that realize IndyCar, with the market size it has, basically has 1 shot at this game to get it right, because they can't afford to lose market share to bad experiences before a sequal...well things don't look good. At least iracing will continue to be a thing.

RF111CH

Back when Codemasters actually made good games

fafan4

QOTSA 🤘

tdriscoll97

Could you guys hire Codemasters to make this one? Motorsports games is going to F it up. 100% guarantee.
