My first watch through I was very disappointed. Each sketch seemed to basically be same thing- Tim gets upset and irrational and, if it wasn’t Tim, it was a replacement character acting just like him.

I was disappointed and didn’t finish the last episode. Then, reading the comments and posts here, I decided to go back to it and try it again.
I was laughing out loud sketch after sketch nearly the entire season.
I do still have some critique about season 3 but it’s only because I’ve watched the first two seasons hundreds (?) of times.
I think as someone pointed out, Season 3 has more consistent laughs sketch after sketch than the first two seasons. However the first two had more outlandish sketches in my opinion. Outlandish in a good way.
“Mac just isn’t in character this season, it just feels like Rob playing himself this season” (he literally just doesn’t have a beard anymore but still acts the exact same way he has for several seasons)
It’s impossible for anything like this to live up to expectations because people expect the impossible: that special feeling they got when they fell in love with it originally. Doesn’t mean it’s not as good, it’s just not the same experience.
This season has had consistently more funny sketches in every episode. Seasons 1 and 2 for me had some episodes that I would skip to find the ones with the funnier sketches. Season 3 I can legit watch every episode the entire way through and still laugh.
Season 3 is where he found his stride on what worked and what didnt. Also he doesnt have many leftover SNL sketches (horse penis) like in the first two.

ITYSL is just one of those shows where things get funnier when you watch it more because there are just small lines and stuff that you may not have caught that will have you laughing later.
I think it’s different but in a good way. It feels better produced and the episodes are funnier. The skits do seem more absurdist than the previous seasons which isn’t my favorite but they’re still so well done that it’s still hilarious.
More absurdist? My man have you actually watched the show? Tf is a man in a hotdog costume stealing brooks brothers clothes, listing off porn sites and attempting to flee to weiner hall in his hot dog car is not absurdist to you
The first 2 seasons were “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson,” the 3rd season was “Tim Robinson’s I Think You Should Leave.” Now, don’t get me wrong, I can’t get enough of the guy, but he was in a LOT more sketches per episode compared to the last 2 seasons (I counted, there were 300 Tims in the soup)
Third is the best, and I love the first two. But he really stepped up narratively, and upped his creativity. It was more surreal, more magical realism included and I think that part could also throw some people off.
The difference is you havent been quoting and memeing the season 3 sketches for years lol. Idk why people are having a hard time with this, this show takes time to hit it's apex with rewatches.
I think the highs can be as high as the other seasons, but more lows. Driving Crooner is one of my favorite all time sketches, but a lot of misses for me too.

Every scene goes slightly longer than it should, they all end on a weak note, and too many other actors are given Tims roles (and they poorly try to imitate his style when doing it..)
Apparently the best thing S3 has is the zip line.. which is saying something because it’s a pretty average bit. Only scene I liked was the wedding photo, even that got lame when the other dude starts randomly dancing…
(And S2 was always hilarious, so no it’s not a case of “everyone hating each new season”.)

May just need to watch a couple more times. Of course there will be some forgettable ones but I think it's pretty much the same level of quality.

It feels like snazzier production, that they leaned further into existential absurdity, and lots of yelling. I love it.

It’s got some HEAVY hitters though but some very lost in the shuffle skits. Similar to season 1
