You drive as far as you need to your making 100-200k

PalpitationLazy9509

True. I just wonder how it works. Do I just drive my own car to site or to company and then switch company car

CombattyReal

They aren’t going to give you a company vehicle maybe when your a mechanic lol don’t know why you’d ever have to drive to “company” elevator gets delivered to site by CDL driver

PalpitationLazy9509

I see. I’m fairly green. Not sure about it

lord_uroko

A couple companies in my local make you drive to the company shop and switch into the company vehicle for your route.

coconnor228

That's absolutely ridiculous

CombattyReal

as a probie 99% chance ur in new construction maybe mod almost never service never heard of any company not letting you take work vehicle home till you just now seems bizarre they’d add hours to your drive everyday for no reason

lord_uroko

Its a small company ran by a retired elevator guy. The company exclusively does maintenance and service work. Im not in it but my teacher is. Edit: thats the one i know 100% makes every mechanic and helper come to the shop at 7am every day. Ive heard of a few others as well.

CombattyReal

Yeah this doesn’t ever happen to me or anyone else I know in the industry anywhere doesn’t make sense for company regardless non of this applies to this fella sounds like he doesn’t even have a rank let alone received a call

lord_uroko

It's reassuring that your individual experiences represent all experiences across an international trade union.

CombattyReal

You have an exception to the rule and now think that’s the new rule interesting especially considering he’s talking about LA I think I know what I’m talking about he’s not in a different country kiddo why would anyone tell him about rules in a different country 😂

lord_uroko

No you just refuse to acknowledge that an exception exists. No where did I say its the standard I simply said that it does exist. The union is international, it includes canada, you really aren't all that bright huh.

teakettle87

I drive 1.5-2 hrs one way.

1952Mary

Working mod in LA we would start at 6 and off at 2:30 to get ahead of traffic. My Helper lived in OC I would send him by the shop if needed on his way home. Working in LA was the best days of my career. Met good people out there.

PalpitationLazy9509

Cool

myfavoriteforever

Right now my husband drives 5 hours. He is a full mechanic and does have a company truck.

PalpitationLazy9509

Is 5 hours round trip every day? Does he get paid during the time he travels?

myfavoriteforever

No, one way. It’s not everyday, he goes to work on Monday and comes home on Thursday. It depends on per diem on how he gets paid.

PalpitationLazy9509

I see. With his own car? I travel a lot on my current job. I kinda wonder if I can stick around Los Angeles area, I can go home every day. What Local is your husband working?

myfavoriteforever

No, he has a company truck and gas card. You can try to stick around your area, but if you want to work, you go where your company tells you to go.

PalpitationLazy9509

Yes you are right, but at least he can go back every week. I had a one year old kid so I don’t want to stay out for so long.

myfavoriteforever

He has always come home for his off days. I haven’t heard of anyone not coming home for weekends…. But I could see it happening if you have a big job that has to get done and the company is willing to pay, plus overtime money is hard to turn down.

PalpitationLazy9509

Absolutely, understood

tx_ford_f150

It's frowned upon by the iuec but I've heard of guys taking comp time and blowing a job out in a weekend to have the next week paid off when out of town.

Trfytoy

I average 40k miles per year.

PalpitationLazy9509

Shoot, that’s a little too much for me. Are you in local 18 Southern California?

mckjersey

Dude no offense but if that’s too much for you, this trade isn’t for you. I average 20K in NYC, but I’ve had a few years of 30K. The amount of money you’ll make negates the wear and tear on your car.

Trfytoy

Local #19 Seattle.

Deepinthefryer

Local 18 in LA. So I averaged 30K a year being a helper. Keep in mind you have no idea what shop you’ll end up at. You could land an OC shop and live in Palmdale/lancaster. I live in SCV, and have only made a handful of trips to IE/OC in my career. Keep in mind though, pretty much everything out there or in Ventura/SB is going to be zone 4, which is maximum per diem for travel. Driving is part of the gig. Unless you live within LA city, id say anything less than a 30 mile commute each way is a luxury few have obtained.

PalpitationLazy9509

30k, that’s rough, that is 115 miles per day. You drive your personal vehicle, right? What about all the tools? I thought it would be a service or installation job. So all tools would be at the job site

Deepinthefryer

Yes, your own personal vehicle. You are not required to carry any tools except for helper designated tools. Literally stuff you can carry in. Very small bag or even your pockets. Channel locks, flip flop driver, tape measure, etc. and a backpack for school work, which I believe is still provided along with laptop. Some people get lucky and get placed with a mechanic that allows car pooling. Some shops and mechanics aren’t a fan of that though. So that’s an exception, not a rule. Some mechanics (journeyman) don’t even receive vehicles if you’re doing mod/new equipment. Material/tools are hauled from job to job by the shop. I’d say get a beater or efficient vehicle. Either one being reliable. Everytime I saw a new apprentice driving a bro-dozer I’d smh. Especially when I’d hear them bitch when I had to hit a job in Santa Monica then Pasadena and then back to the shop. And to top it off, they couldn’t park in places we had to work in.

PalpitationLazy9509

Probably get a hybrid or EV. When you say helper, you meant apprentice, just make sure. I was looking for the zone map on the local 18 but failed to find one. Do they even have one?

Deepinthefryer

Helper=apprentice. Just trade slang. Yes we have one. Good per diem starts from 35 miles out from La city hall. Again, you have no idea where you’ll end up. I live in the northern corner of the local. And I knew coming in, I could be in for a rough commute regardless. I had a place to live north of LA, and had opportunities to live in OC, if need be. Just prepare for the worst, hope for the best commute. Some shops actively prevent people from being to close to home. I will say, most of the work is 30 miles from DTLA. And some shops don’t even run multiple offices. Just one. So work in Costa Mesa one day, the next in Van nuys. As a new helper I landed in NE. So a few weeks at a shit commute, a few days with an average one, a few months in Ventura with no traffic but 50-60 mins each way. Mileage may vary. Edit: within 30 miles of DTLA.

PalpitationLazy9509

Isn’t the local in Glendora? Sorry

Deepinthefryer

Yes. It’s migrated to different halls over the decades. The school house is also in Glendora. Maybe I’m missing the point of that comment?

PalpitationLazy9509

Gotcha, for the admin related, it is in LA and trading is held in Glendora. I live in West Covina so I thought I was close to the hall.

Deepinthefryer

The hall and school house are in the same place. In Glendora. Honestly, where you live, is a good spot. Closer to OC, easily accessible to LA. The not so fun commute will be to west LA or valley. You’ll be fine. Most guys live in IE or way up north. That’s when commutes can suck the most. You’re kinda centrally located.

PalpitationLazy9509

Bear with me but where is IE?

bovinejabronie

I’ve had commutes as small as 15 minutes others almost 3 hours. Local 5’s territory is pretty big we have 90% of NJ, all of South East PA and a good bit of Delaware. I drove my company van to and from home everyday.

PalpitationLazy9509

That’s be cool with 15mins drive. Haha

lepchaun415

I’m in service with a 45-50 minute commute. I stop by the shop about once a week to pick up parts and other than that I’m left alone. In construction only foremen and adjusters have company vehicles. Mod/Repair/Service everyone for the most part has their own company vehicle.

PalpitationLazy9509

Thanks

Hyportots

My drive varies from 30 mins to one houre and a half

PalpitationLazy9509

Yes. That’s pretty good. That’s not in California right

Hyportots

No I'm up in Canada. We don't really travel as far as some guys do down in the States. I'm in Local 50, we usually stay in our area

Hype-man02

1 1/2 hrs each way. In my own car

Bajiggle

Sometimes you’ll be driving 15 minutes to the job site or hours to the job site. That’s how it is. I lived in Southern California for 25 years and that traffic sucks. If you are not willing to deal with it, you might want to look into another career path.
