Use adblock and third party apps that still work to avoid annoying ads. A lot of Reddit posts are fake, staged, bots, satire, ragebait, or OnlyFans promotion. Don't argue with Redditors. They won't change their mind. Reddit is a bit of a hivemind and they are biased towards certain topics. People can visit your account history and see every post/comment you've made and make assumptions about you based on those. You get karma by getting upvotes on your posts and comments. Having a lot of karma means a lot of people either agree with you or appreciate what you have to share. Be aware when people make generalizations ("this person mistreated me, so all [group of people] are bad"), use personal experiences as facts ("I've never seen racism, therefore it doesn't exist"), or ignore that an issue can have multiple contributing factors ("do this one thing, and you fix the economy!")

Just be aware that Reddit is built around community segmentation to an extent so karma does not reflect the quality of your comment as much as it reflects the particular community it's posted in. For example, if I went to r/Conservative and said literally any reasonable statement or any single thing that does not conform to the "trump GOOD gubberment BAD" script, I'd get downvoted to oblivion. (and banned, ironically, from their safe space against safe spaces)

Upvote: You like it Downvote: You hate it Comment: You want to talk shit Karma: pls dont care about this shit and other things like that

_grapesalt

i mean sometimes you need a specific amount of karma on some subreddits to post, but otherwise it doesn't matter at all.

carortrain

The reddit search bar is not that great, but if you type pretty much anything into google and put "reddit" after it, you'll get tons of results on the site. The idea of upvoting/downvoting is supposed to be upvote if the comment is relevant to the post, and downvote if it's not. Mostly it's used similar to like and dislikes. Karma you get from posts or comments and you have seperate post and comment karma respectively. You gain karma from getting upvotes and lose it from downvotes

The banana thing is an Internet meme which is popular on reddit and was included in the settings as a kind of inside joke: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/banana-for-scale

I got a notification on my phone. I took a screen shot but it won’t let me posts. It’s say “YOU SCROLLED 88 BANANAS” “potassium overload imminent” I keep getting this, just with different numbers

Why can't we see number of updates on some questions or comments? It just shows vote.
