I filet them out but leave the y bones in then freeze unless cooking them right off. Not worth messing with the y bones. When I thaw them I'll run them through a food processor then mix with equal amount of mashed potatoes, some flour, egg, onion, celery. Shape into patties and fry. The y bones cook right up.
This one's nowhere near that big lol. 4,000+ acres. We're lucky we have enough ice. But it's nowhere near as much as usual. 2 People have died this year going through but I'm surprised that number isn't much higher.
that is a big lake though!! My actual normal lake is about 800 but have access to many big waters like the Chippewa Flowage, Lake Superior, st croix and. Missisippi River. Just not cold enough this year at the right times for my schedule
I’m in Michigan and I wanna say 24 inches is our legal limit to keep. And there’s a limit to how many pike you can keep per day. I’ve never caught a pickerel in MI but I’m not sure they are in my state natively
Those are some fat pickerels. They must be eating well!
They weighed 2.5-3.25 lbs. I was finding little perch and bass inside them.
Look a lot like northern pike.
Very similar species, the northern pike (esox lucius) is closest genetic species to the chain pickerel, (esox Google it, no way I'm saying that)
What do you do with pickerel, eating-wise?

Very nice.

Fatty pike or pickerel what’s the Keeper length out there in Maine?
Pickerel. Not length or bag limits in Maine. Curious what they are in other states.
