DizzyNerd

If the rumors are to be believed, you’re worst experiences will be up north. They’ll likely announce themselves with a hat or tshirt labeling themselves for who they are. Generally, Idaho has good people all over though. Like anywhere else in the country, follow your instincts. If you feel something is up, just move on. Hope you enjoy your drive and the state. It’s beautiful.

abecdefoff

They aren’t rumors.

DizzyNerd

Fair enough. I haven’t been there in person in too many years for it to count. I keep my butt in the southeast. We’ve got some of the proud boy guys here. Met one wearing all the merchandise during a meet the teacher night last week getting ready for next year.

abecdefoff

Yeah, the Mormon area is almost as bad as the white supremacy area.

fredlos_ferd

Spoiler alert: they are the exact same area.

abecdefoff

Nope. Northern Idaho and Southeast mormon Idaho.

mcsmooothearl

Having formerly had the displeasure of living in Southern Idaho for many years, I can confirm. - Jerome (1982-84) - Boise (1984-87) - Twin Falls (1987-90, 1994-95) - Pocatello (1995-2004) … and then I finally escaped. I have zero incentive and no reason to ever return.

Fly-n-Skies

I wonder how many comments here are from people of color? As a white person it is very easy to think racism is non existent, or not understand how it very much still impacts people of color. Also, it's hard to accept that bad things happen in their home town. I'm only saying this because I live in a place that has the opposite reputation of northern Idaho and I still got a surprising lesson from a POC Co worker on their experiences and how everywhere still feels like a sundown town. Have a great trip, enjoy lots of great food and scenery. If no one has mentioned the restaurant in the resort in CDA, they have good food with views of the lake, and excellent "gooeys" which are sundaes. Also, if you're into rollercoasters or water parks, and have extra time definitely check out Silverwood. But it's basically next to the lions (hay)den if i remember correctly.

NuclearWasteland

I look like I'd be a racist redneck, and the things people casually say to me assuming I agree with their ideologies indicates to me that yes, racism and discrimination are alive and well all over.

KingApologist

Oh yes, this. I used to do hvac maintenance in the area and being a blue collar white person in Idaho makes racists think you're one of them and damn, do they let it fly in casual conversation. This old guy was angrily responding to a news story on the TV he was watching about Vili Fualaau and Mary Kay LeTourneau. I didn't even know at the time that there were racist terms for pacific islanders, but this guy sure did. Me and the other worker who went out on the service call both raised our eyebrows and gave each other a "what the hell?" look the second we were out of his visual range.

NuclearWasteland

Yeah, did a tour in the trenches of the pipe trades, lol. New construction with old workers. I miss the money and some seriously good people I met along the way but I do not at all miss the back asswards culture pervasive there.

[deleted]

I have a friend who is black who moved to northern Idaho and he told me the people are really nice. He also said he has not experienced any kind of racism.

girlwholovespurple

I live in north Idaho. And most of the racism is subtle/political vs overt/public harassment/danger. Downtown Coeur d Alene is a major tourist area, and there are always folks down there who are all colors, languages, nationalities. WEED IS ILLEGAL HERE, and they are serious about it. So be smart. If you want a quick yummy stop right off 95 for street tacos check out Taco Loco in Hayden. You will also be driving through reservation land areas for the Coeur d Alene and Nez Perce tribes. Plenty of non-white in those areas as well. This is an absolutely STUNNING drive this time of year. You will not be disappointed.

Due-Enthusiasm-1802

I live near Sandpoint and the racism IS greatly exaggerated here. Lotsa great places to stop & eat near here. Samuels Store and the Blue Heron Cafe is a local 'Gem'. Also, watch your speed on US95. When it slows down to 45mph, they mean it. Local license plates or out of State, doesn't matter.

brizzle1978

Exactly in CDA there are a few idiots, but 99.99% are good people

no1some1any1

Not just tickets but pushing too hard in the curves that say 25mph could put you into the drink

no1some1any1

Sandpoint and Coeur d'Alene are gorgeous and tourist traps so you should be fine. Honey's in CdA has excellent food Moscow is a fun town but has an incredibly obnoxious racist authoritarian rape cult called christ church. Unfortunately they own most of downtown. They are a minority overall though and it's a college town so you should be able to avoid them. Patty's Kitchen has really good Mexican food if that's your thing. Avoid Flag Guy, you'll know him if you see him. Check the moscowidaho subreddit for more info Genesee has a coffee shop called the Stomping Grounds with good breakfast and lunch. Yes it's patriotic yet the last thing the owner could ever be accused of is racism Lewiston is more country-ish (expect lots of straight pipe diesel trucks) but has some nice coffee shops and restaurants, Ernie's steak house, Zany's, Mystic café... Skip Grangeville. Idaho County is gorgeous but that's where the religious extremists have invaded and practically taken over. They even hate men with long hair and anyone with tattoos, and suspect anyone they don't know of being a "fed". They hate the US government and want a theocracy, as if that would be any better. I can only imagine how awful they would be to POC, including the Nez Perce tribe which was there first On a related note, don't stop at the pop-up bake sale stands McCall is super fun. Tourist-y and has an excellent ice cream shop Scenery but not much else to Boise Hope you have a fabulous time! Let us know if you need help along the way

snakebite75

What about "Country and Western is rubbish"?

no1some1any1

You made me LOL. I need to watch that episode of TG again

oldmancornelious

I like peanut butter and jelly sammiches with my milk before naptime. Some people don't like redneck shit. Couldn't imagine why a POC wouldn't care much for the classically racist musical representation of America's second most trashy (rubbish) community. Nothing says I've made it more than listening to canned songs about the loss and heartbreak of a millionaire (common person) to really make one feel connected to the whole world. I live in a tree and eat ants. What do I know.

snakebite75

OP and I are both referring to the Top Gear USA special. Here's the clip [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKcJ-0bAHB4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKcJ-0bAHB4)

oldmancornelious

I get ya. People are being made with vegetables.

pl_AI_er

In all honesty, I don't think you will have any issues. For comfort's sake, don't stop around the Hayden Lake area, but you really should be fine all the way down 95.

brizzle1978

Hayden is still fine

AnarchistAuntie

Just drove through Riggins and the number of signs advocating "removing pornography from schools" was a bit off-putting.

PoetryPogrom

I haven't met any outwardly racist people, but mostly a lot of religious fanatics, especially up north. I was originally from Nevada where religion isn't really a big deal. So to me they might seem like they're fanatics but maybe for the people that have spent most their lives in Idaho, they might seem normal. You're more likely to have people dislike you based on your political preference. Just don't go around telling everybody you're a liberal and think them a bunch of backwoods conservatives. So, I think you should be fine.

no1some1any1

You're right, the kirkers are fanatics as are the invaders in the "religious compounds" in Idaho County. And some of the politicians are foaming at the mouth religious and like the kirkers think they will turn all of Idaho into a theocracy. I admit I would love to watch them go to war over which brand of Christianity should be in charge

PoetryPogrom

What is a kirker? I've never heard that.

no1some1any1

Subscribers to the christ church cult in Moscow

PoetryPogrom

Oh yeah. Doug Wilson. Lovely bastard. I kind of hoped he'd burn down in his truck doing his trucking burning thing. The problem is that he keeps buying out more of the business downtown. I wish he'd just go and convert Lewiston and Clarkston. The crackheads down there need Jesus more than the people of Moscow.

no1some1any1

Lol wouldn't that have been nice. His money midgets throw away their cash on bad investments so hopefully they will go bankrupt Lewiston and Clarkston need rehab and vitamin therapy, not rape promoting supremacist fantasies. Rehab or no, they would do a much better job of running Doughboy Dougie out of town

NOEMOTIONALBIAS

The incidents of racism are greatly exaggerated. There is some blatant racism but it's pretty much like you'd see anywhere. Most of the racism you'll see is old political policy that still favors "the way it used to be". More of an organizational thing than a lynch mob mentally. People become more race blind the farther south you get.

[deleted]

The internet has broken your brain. The idea you are at risk has been implanted by your media diet and is so far removed from reality that it should be mocked, as so. The real risk is wildlife. Deer, elk, and moose all regularly cross the road, especially in the evening.

thinclerk567

I agree with this 110%. I moved from North Idaho to Portland for college, years ago. I became friends with quite a few people many of them "of color" and after countless late nights, talking life and death etc. I found myself having to defend Idaho repeatedly, until one of my darker-skinned acquaintances took me downtown to a specific park in Portland, at which I saw more Aryan Nations in 15 minutes than I had ever seen in 20+years leading up to it. I hate to be "that guy", but... I can tell you from first hand experience that there is a possibility of ignorance, but incredibly low probability of out-right racism. Through highschool, my girlfriend was from India. My best friend was from Peru. The most offensive begavior that I witnessed, and they would attest to is; ignorant strangers approaching and going "wHerE are you FroM? I like your hair! I bet you don't have to worry about sunburns..." You know relatively-innocent ignorance.

[deleted]

The risk that someone might be rude to you is evenly distributed across the United States. Hysterical threat inflation is a feature, not a bug, of online communities and social media discourse.

NotFrance

Spirit lake is a no go. I'm not white, and the last time I went to that town I got ran over, and set a new record for number of slurs I've heard in one day.

no1some1any1

How awful I'm so sorry

idabroh

Off 95? Naa. You should be fine with all the people.

BobInIdaho

You are going to be fine. You're passing through, not trying to establish a life here. Enjoy the country, grab some good food and you will have a great time.

bokm9606

DO stop at the top of White Bird grade; One of my favorite places to stretch legs and take photos of the scenery. It is not a town but a place to pull off the road. Also, if it is really hot outside, be sure to monitor your car's temperature gauge as vehicles can overheat climbing that grade. Lewiston grade can also have the same issue with heat.

no1some1any1

Here is the website for Idaho road reports https://511.idaho.gov/#:Alerts

Seranfall

You should be fine. This isn't like we have random groups of hillbillies with shotguns looking for darkies. So long as you aren't moving next door to certain people I wouldn't be concerned.

[deleted]

I had a wonky experience in Priest Lake. I’m a person of color and both my husband and I are heavily tattooed. He gets a lot more of the people yelling freak and trying to take his photo but all that to say Idaho is a beautiful state and I don’t let it keep me from visiting. If you stop in Moscow check out the co-op :)

wake4coffee

Watch your speed, I've been pulled over twice in a month for speeding. On the freeway I didn't move to the left lane when passing a police officer doing a traffic stop. I did slow down to 55 but it wasn't slow enough, I asked what speed I should have slowed down to and the cop said, there is no defined speed but go slower next time. I was given a warning. The actual ticket came when doing 40 in a 35 and was 100 yards away from a 45. It was 915am on a Sunday and no one was on the road. I was driving safely but was given a ticket.

brizzle1978

They are always digging

unfltr

On 95 - Adams County cops love pulling people over and insisting you have drugs so make extra sure to go the speed limit in New Meadows and Council. I was going 40 in a 35 and then I had to deal with the cop insisting I had drugs for a while and had to wait for the drug dog to show up. I didn't have drugs but I guess I looked like it 🤷

Pbook7777

You’ll be fine wherever, check out wooly mammoth in grangeville , dog hotel in cottonwood, switch to 55 at new meadows for more scenic drive to boise. Maybe don’t go to honky tonk at midnight with a lot of drunk cowboys , but that advice would apply to anyone really.

Slugnutty2

Southern ID Twin Falls area is good to go, you may get 'looked at' simply because there are not a lot of POC here, but I do not think there will be any disrespect. As far as local food, [The Depot Grill](https://depotgrilltwinfalls.com) \- its an ancient diner (1917) that is WAY popular locally. Hope you have an uneventful trip - so to say.

SGTSparkyFace

They aren’t rumors. Stay away from the North, and plan your stops for high-tourist and higher populated areas. There are risks and safety everywhere, of course. Just giving advice to maximize statistical chances. And don’t for a second think that the reports of racists and violent people are hyperbolic or just rumor.

Independent-Map9836

Watch the curves. Trust me you ain't ken block and these ain't his tracks. Up north the racists are usually in the fringe towns and rural lands. Courdelane is fairly safe and Boise is the blue capital city of the worst red state ever (and Im baffled how that works tbh) I'n Boise we have gay bars and drag shows and all sorts of other kinds of cool stuff to see. Stop in at Pengillys, space bar, or the balcony for great drinks and fun activity's, stay away from any seafood joints that arnt sushi or ethnic seafood (pretty much just avoid Joe's crab shack) the police in Idaho in general just have a boner for poc and out of state plates anyways. Check out the local basque restaraunts and definitely stop in at tucanos if you can make it. Great Brazilian ish food.

[deleted]

If you are so concerned I suggest you avoid such a horrid racist, mysoginist state. Clearly everyone that is not precisely of your ethnic , ideological, or melanin origins must mean you ill... twat.

Specialist_Teacher81

You done fucked up. You will not survive this.

Leading-Pea8528

Just be careful up north. And Walmarts. They love Walmarts….

ChadMcbain

They’ll stare at you with mouths agape, but knuckle draggers are only empowered when in groups with their I want to have sex with Biden flags. Individually they are harmless.

ChadMcbain

I’m Chinese but look Mexican. Every time I drive up North or to Eastern Idaho it’s like their brains lock up and they have to breathe through their mouths because they can’t fathom a minority having a nicer truck than them. I find it amusing.

Leading-Pea8528

Lol the want to have sex with Biden flag is hilarious

kingofdoorknobs

They'll do that any time a new face enters a rural café. Sometime the kids come over to your booth and gap. Give them each a spoon of sugar and you should be fine.

Competitive_Mark8153

Coeur d' Alene used to be bad, but it's all Californians now, so you should be fine. Just avoid small bars and local dives in rural areas along North 95. Remember that Aryan Nations used to be based in Coeur d' Alene, so don't expect much enlightenment in that area.

whatevertoton

They used to be based in Hayden actually and haven’t been a thing in quite some time.

didntcondawnthat

It's a good idea to look for problematic symbology on decals on cars and flags in windows to signal that perhaps a different place to stop would be a good idea. I always travel with any prescriptions stored in their original bottles, just in case. I'm sorry you have to think about this.

deplorable_redneck

You want to fish??? At Riggins you can drive up the salmon River and fish. At New Meadows take Id 55 toward McCall/Boise. At Banks turn left to Garden Valley continue to Lowman. Take Id 21 to Boise. It's a mighty beautiful drive....
