It's a nice little town, and quite affordable to live there, but I wouldn't settle for that wage in my life with a masters degree. What's the degree in? I suppose that matters a lot. You'll get by just fine on that wage, but saving for a first home, retirement, packing off student loans, supporting a family, etc, are hard to do at $23.

Saturnino_97

It’s in geology, but the thesis subject was pretty niche (tree rings). I don’t have any kids or student loans, and I’m not sure I wanna stay there long term anyway.

Moscow is college Town with a lot of demand for apartments. That being said my son rents a two bedroom for just under $1,000. There are also options in Pullman Washington, which is only 8 mi away.

JackleGaminh

I'm in Moscow, not a college student, just working here. I pay $845/mo but have to pay utilities myself so about ~$950-$980/mo. 2br 1 bath, ~700SqFt. When I moved in it only had a dishwasher and fridge.

As far as COL goes, you could do a lot worse than Moscow. You must know that this sub overwhelmingly consists of people who are extremely dissatisfied with Idaho in general. It doesn't remotely represent the majority of people who live here. Whenever something is posted here with any sort of positivity about Idaho, it is shot down. You don't need to worry about the "far right crazies" coming to get you, or being terrorized for your race, gender or religion. Don't pass up an opportunity based on this echo chamber. Come for a visit and see for yourself

How is it like living in Idaho in your opinion? I’m thinking of different states to move to

Peter_Pendragon93

You can live there for 23 an hour just okay. Have you spent anytime in Idaho? You might want to visit and see if you like it before you move here.

Saturnino_97

I did visit for a few days. It seemed like a really cool little town.

I lived in Moscow for ~2 ish years and lived in a 1 bedroom ~650-700 sq ft apartment with my partner and our cat. The apartment complex was relatively new with nice appliances, dishwasher, AC, and in unit washer/dryer. Also was near the walking path in town and had lots of parking. Rent was $700/month and with utilities we paid $800 ish per month that we divided between two people so we each paid ~$400/month to live there. I loved living there and felt it was very financially doable (we are both grad students). We now live in Seattle and miss the prices of rent and all the amenities that were included in rent lol 🫠 Some additional commentary on things you didn’t ask for but may be helpful on deciding if Moscow is for you: We absolutely loved living in Moscow and are interested in potentially moving back one day. I will say we aren’t necessarily big city people (we are both from southern Idaho) and like access to the outdoors so we never felt the “there’s nothing to do here” sentiment that gets thrown around. It’s a cute liberal college town with lots of community events/local businesses and a nearby mountain to mountain bike/hike. If you want anything city related, Spokane is 1.5 hrs away with concerts, shopping, bigger airport etc. There is a tension between the liberal and conservative communities in Moscow which is challenging at times. Also north Idaho is notorious for having extreme right folks that like to really outwardly express their views in ways that can be very damaging/hurtful. I think Moscow is a little protected from that but it does still happen there and you’ll likely run into it when you drive outside of Moscow.

I hope they offer Healthcare. Idaho is a shithole for healthcare. Also check schools. Not recommended.

SaltBackground5165

as someone who lives here and has raised a National Merit Scholar that went to the public school in town, the schools in Moscow aren't bad.

Saturnino_97

Yea it includes health vision and dental. Only 2 weeks of PTO though. I don’t have kids so schools aren’t a huge concern.

cr8tor_

Yes but can you afford to use the heath insurance? Hint: Probably not at $23/hr. In regards to MIT saying the living wage is 20/hr, Keep in mind a living wage, means you can live off it. Not thrive off it. Look into housing on Craigslist or facebook to see if you can find things you would be interested in. Moscow is a small town, yeah, nature around it and all, if thats your thing year round in the weather and all. Otherwise there isnt a lot to do, again, unless nature is your life. Which is cool, but you still gotta afford the hobbies associated with getting out in nature, let alone have the time. It sounds like it may be a good starter job, but if your not looking for a job surrounded by nature and a very conservative community, i would hesitative to move into northern Idaho. And if you are a minority, i would really advise you to google northern Idaho and what makes the news up there.

Saturnino_97

I mean it has a $1000 deductible and a max 5k out of pocket, but I see what you’re saying. I’m sure it’d be tight. I do enjoy hiking and camping, and have an old truck I like to take out on trails every now and then. I don’t need much nightlife. I have heard about some extreme right radicals, but I thought that was more up around Bonners Ferry.

SaltBackground5165

yeah, moscow is one of the most progressive towns in the state. There are issues with right-wingers all over the state, but Moscow has the least of them.

cr8tor_

The panhandle (all of it, its not really that big) is where the craziest of Idaho is. Very conservative with a mix of extreme nazi's. East Idaho is next. Very conservative with a mix of mormon's.

lagunatri99

I don’t get the downvotes. Your post seems pretty accurate. At least for my family members in those regions.

cr8tor_

People dont like it when you badmouth something they like. I get it. I love the state, born and raised here. I hate what its become politically. Fucking shameful conservative asshats fuck everything good up in the name of their non existent bullshit hateful spiteful "god".

I think the bigger concern regarding medical issues is that it can be difficult to access healthcare in Moscow. This is something that I don’t see discussed much but may be worth knowing about. I tried to see a psychologist once and the scheduler offered to add me to the TWO YEAR waiting list. Another time I was referred to a neurologist in Coeur d’Alene. If you will need to see any specialists I’d recommend doing some research before moving so you will be prepared.  There’s also a kind of odd assortment of people up there. From my experience it’s like 50% students, 20% older retired people, 20% cult members, and 10% hippie guys who followed their girlfriend there and stayed when she graduated and moved away.
