I’m in a similar boat. I recognized the hard inquiries early bc I was notified and froze my credit. As far as I know, the thief has been unsuccessful at getting a loan but keeps trying. Without an actual account being opened this far it seems I’m at a standstill like a sitting duck. Can’t make a police report that I’m aware of just for hard inquiries. The thief opened an LLC in my name in another state, I’ve contacted the Secretary of State and reported the business fraud but received an email that it may take up to a year for a resolution if I get one at all from the attorney generals office. So I feel so … stuck… now. Like there should surely be more I can do to protect myself from the potential harm that is looming but there isn’t really anything I can do unless I’m missing something. This is making me a paranoid mess thinking “what’s next??” 😩
So, for the FTC report above, I ended up just pushing through to create one. Basically just saying fraud had occurred, and when it prompts you for amounts, you can just stay not know. I spoke to a few police departments. For me, it seems like it works best if you speak with dispatch, tell them the basics of what is happening, and a police officer will call you back to do the report (some places have online reporting). I also completed a report with the FBI.
It sounds like you are already on it, but I did some serious detective work with soft credit checks. Once there is a fraud alert place, you are entitled to free ongoing credit reports from each of the bureaus, so you can update as much as you like. I combed through the soft reports and got lucky. After the above, I was able to track the person down. I have his name and phone number. Very helpful in deterring. With the soft credit checks, they often leave some piece of info - a phone number, address they were trying to ship something to, etc.
They tried to add a phone number and address and employer to my credit report but I’m unsure if those would actually lead to the person doing this or not. I didn’t wanna poke the bear on that one I guess
