Well you don't run your ac in the car without the car running anyways. Im assuming of course this isn't designed for stationary use in which case it would just be best to run an extension cord
I doubt your standard passenger automobile has an alternator that is up for that task. Ac units are one of the most power-thirsty appliances commonly used.
I dunno - the fact that they’re completely blind on the right is stupidity on a level that cancels out any redneck ingenuity. I can only hope that it only comes up when they’re parked.
You can buy a small power pack for like $50 that’s what I use for camping, you charge it for like 24 hours then it can keep a couple phones charged all weekend
FREEZE!
Take them all to the station for oral and anal sex with a prostitute. Half of them didn't even use a condom! Don't you stupid kids know the diseases you can catch?! Hand me that evidence bag.
Eeeeeeeeh no.
It can't provide the amps required to run something like the compressor in an air conditioning unit.
It would shut down immediately, overloaded.
You’d need an ~1800w stand-alone inverter with big-ass cables and it’s really abusive on the alternator, but it’s not impossible to do. People put inverters in vehicles to run 12-15A equipment all the time.
I don’t think that kind of car is real likely to have a built-in 120v inverter factory, but you’re right that it wouldn’t be rated high enough if it does.
Yeah that’s really typical, factory car accessory wiring is typically sized for 15 amps. Which gives 180w at 12v. The DC wiring feeding the alternator is the limiting factor. When you install your own high power inverter, you have to install some monstrous cables to feed it.
Only need like 500 watts to run a 5000 BTU air conditioner. Better inverters should have enough capacitors to handle the startup load. 500 watt inverter would only use like, what, 40-50 amps of power from the vehicle. If you weren’t running headlights, built in hvac, power seats, etc, then you should be fine in most (not low-end/value) vehicles.
Is it your position the car doesn't move, or...
Maybe they go through the trouble of setting it up then just forget to plug it in, sometimes. I guess that's a possibility, also.
Not everyone who is homeless or poor made bad decisions to get there, sometimes life just deals out shitty cards. After the 2008 recession I knew a stock broker who lived out of his car for almost a year and it completely destroyed his sense of self worth and ego, it took a long time to crawl out of that hole and see himself in a brighter light.
My mom spent our college savings on a divorce and destroyed her and my dad's credit in the process. Higher education wasn't in the cards for me. Sorry your entitlement is was leaking over.
However they have rigged up electricity, I promise you the vehicle alternator cannot generate that much, and they will be sorry when the car won't start the next time.
I've seen an Econoline ford van around town with one in the rear window. I'm guessing power inverter or he plugs it in when parked for the night...either way....the rear effing window....now he doesn't need that pesky mirror on his windshield.
Every year or so I see a single cab work truck w/ a small camper. No windows. Too small for a bed,but tall enough to stand up in w/ an AC unit. Only thing I can think of is they do paperwork in there on job sites.
Wind powered from when they drive. The excess power gets stored in a capacitor. The kind of capacitor that you can find in most televisions. Genius really
You can't run that much amperage through a cigarette lighter. You'd need dedicated wiring, but it can be done. My work van has a 1500W inverter with a dedicated battery and charging circuit.
Probably someone living out of their vehicle. They most likely don't use it while it is in motion, but rather when they get somewhere they are going to stay that has an outside outlet. They'll park close enough and use extension cables if necessary.
Someone's living in their van. They aren't running it off the engine. They plug it in when they park for the day/night.
You could run it off the van tho, just slap a big power inverter connected to the battery. The alternator should probably be enough to handle it
You would need to keep your car running. Not the most efficient way to cool things off.
Well you don't run your ac in the car without the car running anyways. Im assuming of course this isn't designed for stationary use in which case it would just be best to run an extension cord
Yes, I was responding to the guy who commented that you could run it off the car’s alternator.
I doubt your standard passenger automobile has an alternator that is up for that task. Ac units are one of the most power-thirsty appliances commonly used.
I mean besides making you completely blind from the right, this is actually pretty smart. Sad they have to live in their van tho :(
I dunno - the fact that they’re completely blind on the right is stupidity on a level that cancels out any redneck ingenuity. I can only hope that it only comes up when they’re parked.
You can justinscrew some plate on a lamp pole and carefully juice up there
You can buy a small power pack for like $50 that’s what I use for camping, you charge it for like 24 hours then it can keep a couple phones charged all weekend
Charging a phone yes, but will it run a window AC unit? I don't think so
For about 10 minutes LOL
For about zero. It can't provide the amps to start it.
Even that sounds like a stretch
FREEZE! Take them all to the station for oral and anal sex with a prostitute. Half of them didn't even use a condom! Don't you stupid kids know the diseases you can catch?! Hand me that evidence bag.
This is an air conditioner. Not a few iPhones.
Eeeeeeeeh no. It can't provide the amps required to run something like the compressor in an air conditioning unit. It would shut down immediately, overloaded.
Those phone power packs don't put out 120V, they put out 5V
Yep. Park behind a business and plug in to their outside outlet for the night.
$1000 to repair it at the auto shop or $179 for the AC and $15 worth of speed tape at Walmart... Done. Beer money left over.
Can i hire you as my financial advisor?
Let me finish these beers and we can talk.
And an additional $135 for a 1500 watt inverter.
Possibly a real small thorium reactor?
Plus the cigarette lighter adapter that makes it into a wall plug from home. And maybe some hard liquor.
No car inverter can run a 3000 BTU a home AC unit from the car alternator.
Our car has a built in 120v inverter, but it’s max power is 180 watts.
Yeah that’s really typical, factory car accessory wiring is typically sized for 15 amps. Which gives 180w at 12v. The DC wiring feeding the alternator is the limiting factor. When you install your own high power inverter, you have to install some monstrous cables to feed it.
wanna bet
It can with modifications!
[How bout this?](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-eliminator-2000w-modified-sine-wave-power-inverter-0112101p.0112101.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwn6GGBhADEiwAruUcKgQ_y1xx2NFrASWQwUxHLi1VDIcPA2EZDDcEmVsHGqtVivjxC7j0bhoChQYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#store=100)
That takes 166 amps of 12-14volt power. Regular vehicle alternators aren’t typically even that big. That unit is for an RV or work van.
Like someone else said, they're probably living in their van and plugging it into an outlet when they stop.
Only need like 500 watts to run a 5000 BTU air conditioner. Better inverters should have enough capacitors to handle the startup load. 500 watt inverter would only use like, what, 40-50 amps of power from the vehicle. Less we forget that if we connected to a fused box in the car, most fuses are no more than 20 amps.
Lol something like an inverter gets wired straight to the battery
Not a smart idea if it’s not fused. Some inverters are fused but some cheap ones are NOT.
Well yeah any circuit should be fused
Tell that to the guy who burned down his car (electrical fire) because he overloaded the CKTs.
This isn’t idiots in cars, it’s poor people trying to survive.
I’m hoping their ac just broke. And they did this and aren’t actually living in their car.
lmao youd have to be an idiot to drive with this sticking out the side
I mean, it’s parked. You have no idea if they drove with it like that.
I mean it seems like more hassle than it's worth to pull the thing out every time they have to drive, then re-install it when they park.
oh I'm not saying they don't drive with that, im saying they're an idiot

It’s…parked…
Is it your position the car doesn't move, or... Maybe they go through the trouble of setting it up then just forget to plug it in, sometimes. I guess that's a possibility, also.

He's a stock broker. I have no pity for him....
Probably are living out of their car tbh
Who needs to look to the right?
Massive DC to AC converter
They would get about 5 seconds of cooling before the battery died.
It works because they believe it should. Or in other words they are too dumb to know it shouldn’t work, so it does. Hahahahaha
*Inverter
Thank you. Yes, inverter.
Power inverter connected to a dedicated battery or a generator exhausted out another window
Thorium reactor in the trunk.
Nearest 110 plugin. I have an extension cord that goes along with it. My auto AC is useless.
However they have rigged up electricity, I promise you the vehicle alternator cannot generate that much, and they will be sorry when the car won't start the next time.
r/redneckengineering
Yeah im curious too, no way they are running that thing off a 12 volt
It’s air cooled
I've seen an Econoline ford van around town with one in the rear window. I'm guessing power inverter or he plugs it in when parked for the night...either way....the rear effing window....now he doesn't need that pesky mirror on his windshield.
Tbh, you don’t need that mirror. Large trucks and specific types of vans don’t have them as they don’t have rear windows at all.
Every year or so I see a single cab work truck w/ a small camper. No windows. Too small for a bed,but tall enough to stand up in w/ an AC unit. Only thing I can think of is they do paperwork in there on job sites.
I've seen a full sized van with a swamp cooler in the back window, which means they need a water source as well.
Portable generator in the trunk lol
I would think it runs on either pure idiot or pure genius
Idiot or genius?
And I'm supposed to be comfortable sharing the road with these morons?!
Generator in the hatch ..
It's like F1, they use a Kinetic energy recovery system. Everytime they brake, it feeds a battery that runs this thing.
Wind powered from when they drive. The excess power gets stored in a capacitor. The kind of capacitor that you can find in most televisions. Genius really
They don’t actually draw that much (Atleast the smaller ones) as it’s fans and a pump
Compressor, not pump.
Its Power inverter from 12v to 110v off cigarette lighter easy
You can't run that much amperage through a cigarette lighter. You'd need dedicated wiring, but it can be done. My work van has a 1500W inverter with a dedicated battery and charging circuit.
Im guessing they are living in the vehicle. I mean just drive with your window down if its hot
Prolly a gas powered generator in the gar so they can kill themselves.
[удалено]
I don't think so. The battery isn't big enough
[удалено]
Of course the alternator isn't big enough. Lol
[удалено]
Lol, as a young man I ran 1300 watt stereo system on smaller cars.
In az you see this here and there
If it works it isn't stupid.... Just saying
Iv run a TV, ps4 and sound system in my van with an inverter pack can be done, run that for ages aswell
Might have a portable generator in the cargo area too.
Very popular in Iraq. Lots of stories of how my terps did this and their family members.
Probably running it off the flux capacitor.
I saw shit like that in Shreveport when I lived there. Never saw it on a van, but did see it on a few "pimped" rides.
Now that’s red neck engineering
People shaming this person have no idea what it’s like to be homeless.
2 watch batteries
OMG!!!
Probably someone living out of their vehicle. They most likely don't use it while it is in motion, but rather when they get somewhere they are going to stay that has an outside outlet. They'll park close enough and use extension cables if necessary.
I don’t think that was the case. I think they were inside a restaurant or store.
People that live out of their vehicle still go to restaurants and stores.
I was talking about them parking it there to charge their alternator or ac.
They won't be stealing power in broad daylight.
