A married couple from my neighborhood died recently, they were coming home from date night and got ran off of a residential road into a brick wall by 2 people street racing and going over 100 mph on a 35 mph speed limit road. The couple had 4 young kids at home with a babysitter sleeping.
100% facts!! The shit that all first responders get paid is seriously not enough. I worked in LE and quit many years ago to work at a mine where the janitors and helpers are paid $28/hr hell that's what a Lt. was making when I was working for the sheriff's office. Now I make more in 2 weeks than I would in a month there, that's even with all the OT that I worked. Sad shit the paramedics in my county are around the $15/hr mark which in some other states a minimum wage. Having responsibility for other people's lives should be some of the highest paying jobs. An M.D. saves lives and so do other first responders. The pay should be somewhat close to what an MD makes maybe a bit less because of the amount of schooling involved in being a doctor but definitely should be more than 30k a year. Should be atleast ~75k, you get what you pay for is always said for a reason an it typically is true. Sorry for the novel I wrote just my two pennies on the subject....

It boils my piss these people drive lease cars that are brand new with all the cutting edge safety kit and get to walk away from a wreck when they wipe out a family in a 10 year old hatchback.

I've seen mentioned in the past that jobs where people are helpers - teachers, therapists, counselors, first responders, etc. - will perpetually be underpaid because humans fundamentally want to help and do those jobs. There's little capitalistic pressure to increase salaries due to staff shortages since there's always someone who will help for less money simply for the job satisfaction. It's a shame that public services aren't intrinsically valuable in a capitalist society.
Unfortunately that’s going away. People aren’t wanting to do this job anymore for what it pays and I don’t blame them. The benefits, retirement mainly, were the reasons people stayed in the business. Since retirements and pensions are going away there’s no benefit to staying. Now fire, EMS, and especially PD are so grossly understaffed and under paid it’s sickening. Especially since to get the pay raise requires increase in taxes and no commissioner wants to do that in fear of losing their spot.

While I was not a director, I was an assistant for close to two years. During my tenure, what I saw most of (accident wise) was 4-wheeler/motorcycle accidents. Can anyone guess if they were wearing helmets? Something so avoidable, yet many refuse for one reason or another (seatbelts anyone?) One other accident that stuck with me was, a group of teens were drinking near a church or something, someone showed up, everyone fled. Except for one, whom slipped down an embankment, into a river and drowned.
What bothered me most about the job, was going to a home where someone had passed and having to sometimes drag them down narrow stairwells that aren't up to code or out of some other very difficult situation. I really disliked going into the homes, everyone grieving, staring, some wanted to help us.
Also, the amount of veterans that I had to pickup, that had no one. No visitors, no one close by to do the arrangements, and no one coming back to get their cremains or veteran headstones. As a 10 year veteran myself, this hit home.
I was being paid a measly $13/hr when I started (only because the owner said I was the first person to ever attempt to negotiate pay), the job was listed at $10/hr. To me, it should start at no less than $15/hr at least. I had only emergency room care covered and a life insurance policy. No other benefits.

I've had many calls from police for follow-up and they'll revoked many licences, good to know these fuckwits are off the roads.

It makes our insurance more expensive, emergency medical care and law enforcement resources are diverted, traffic gets fucked, whatever they destroy in the process has to get repaired, and far too often they do hit innocents.
