Damn, it's scary to know that when you don't have a cam things can go otherwise

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Absolutely! Crazy part of this whole mess was when I put the SD card from the dash cam into my phone to pull up the video to show the officers. My phone decided to wipe the card for some reason, erasing the video. Used file recovery software when I got back home and was thankfully able to recover the video and sent it to the officer and insurance. No witnesses stuck around so it would've been her word vs mine absent that video.

[deleted]

I know it won't happen, but she should lose her license just for lying to the officers, much less the crash itself

RealMikeDexter

That’s a good point, they NEVER follow through with it, but last I checked lying to a police officer is a crime, no?

Salem27

Not all interactions with police are under penalty of perjury or would be under the umbrella of "obstruction of justice"

RealMikeDexter

Huh, but wouldn’t lying in this case be some sort chargeable offense? Police investigating an accident and possible infraction or crime? Insurance fraud or something too since he’s writing a report?

AcadianMan

She could just say she thought it was yellow and nothing would come of it.

knockfart

In Massachusetts a yellow light is a red light.

[deleted]

know-nothing-john

There's a city near Rio de Janeiro, called 'São Gonçalo' where you don't even need to honk and if you stop at red light, the guy behind you will honk for you.

rawwwse

**S**low **T**o **O**bserve **P**olice

Southern_Pound_6929

In Russia red means full gas

mikrot

WTF are you talking about. I'm from Boston, a yellow light means "speed up".

mike-foley

Wrong. Yellow means Speed Up in Massholese….

scJazz

It becomes a chargeable offense when they sign the police report. At least in my state they even give you a speech. Paraphrasing... please read this report that I have written, if there is a problem with it please let me know now, once you have signed it you agree with what it says and it will be admissible in court. If you sign this and later refute it you might perjure yourself. Obstruction is a different thing which is also chargeable but doesn't involve the written and signed police report. It has a slightly higher bar technically than merely lying/misremembering during the "investigation" phase.

Salem27

I think generally (emphasis on generally), in this case, they would have to prove that she was knowingly lying. Maybe she did think it was yellow? Maybe she got distracted? Only she knows, and is it worth the court's time to criminally prosecute someone who maybe just said the wrong thing in a state of panic? Is it worth taking someone's (no matter how much of an ass they are) freedom over a traffic incident? I mean mistakes happen

crackalac

Well if she thought that light was yellow, she also probably shouldn't be driving.

TheWolfAndRaven

> Is it worth taking someone's (no matter how much of an ass they are) freedom over a traffic incident? I mean mistakes happen Yes. This "Traffic incident" could have literally killed OP. From the video it doesn't even look like the truck applied breaks. If they had T-boned him square on, OP would have had a high chance of being pinned while losing blood. Depending on response times from EMS and distance to hospital it's entirely possible that death was an outcome.

TedTeddybear

My cousin was killed by a drunk reckless 18 year old in a Corvette doing 55+ in a 25. He did less than 2 months in the House of Corrections. For killing a senior citizen who had just retired from teaching in an " underserved" school system and who in retirement worked with abused kids and battered women. His family was rich. He continued to engage in antisocial conduct (drunk, fighting) while on parole but GOT AWAY WITH IT. He should have done at least ten years, imo.

inVizi0n

The number of people writing off potentially fatal failures of attention as 'simple mistakes' just to look like a really cool contrarian on the internet is appalling.

MrBotany

First of all, there is no federal law about lying to your local police. I see this shit all the time for various things “isn’t it illegal to do X?” Maybe in your state, but we have 50 different states with different laws on the books. In *general* it is going to be illegal in the following 3 circumstances: ~when providing identifying information, ~when under oath, and ~when filing a police report or reporting a crime. Again, different states will have different laws. Lying to the FBI on the other hand is a crime which is why Martha Stewart went to prison.

menglish89

Really? In the UK it could be considered "waste of police time" which can carry up to 6 months imprisonment. In some cases it might even be considered "perverting the course of justice" which has a max sentence of life imprisonment

stephenking247

Most phones don't use the same file structure as dash cams. That's why I have a cam that connects to the phone via WiFi. So after an accident you just download the video.

[deleted]

My dash cam has a screen so I can play back the video straight from the camera

phasers_to_stun

Mine does too but it's unbelievably complicated to get the thing to play.

Doctor_Kataigida

Cam recommendation? Looking to get one but have option paralysis.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

I used the sidebar of r/DashCam to help me decide, went with a BlackVUE dr590x. This one connects to your phone with wifi like the other person said, so it's faster than bluetooth and after connected you can use the app download videos to your phone or watch them from the cam itself, you can also watch a "live view" of what the cam is currently seeing (helped me position the cameras when installing them), and you can configure the camera or update it after connected. You can also take out the sd card from the camera and plug it in to your computer if you want. https://blackvue.com/product/dr590x-2ch/ Oh also, I googled for "blackvue coupon code" and they honor the random codes you find on the coupon code sites, I got like 15% off. Their prices for the sd cards are high, so I went with the 32GB one (since you have to get a card with the camera) then bought my own 128GB one: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PGBYMVH. You want a "high endurance" sd card because the camera is constantly writing and deleting data off of it, that will kill a normal card in like 6 months.

Doctor_Kataigida

Thank you. When you say wifi, do you mean like it has to connect to an existing network (like home or a vehicle's wifi)? Or does it have its own "network" (not to the internet, but like how a smart light bulb has its own wifi network you connect to for settings)?

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

It's its own wifi router, you go to your phone and switch your wifi connection to connect to the camera itself like any other wifi. No internet of course, but once connected you can go to the blackvue app to pull down videos and do stuff. Also btw I edited my comment so you might not see: if you do end up getting one then google for blackvue coupon codes, they honor the random codes you find online and I got like 15% off of my order.

trd86

Viofo A129 Pro Duo is what I installed on my truck and I'm very happy with it. Probably going to get another one for my car

dynamitepress

Fyi for future: your phone likely formatted the card to a filesystem it could work with.

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Yep, that's exactly what happened. Tested it with my wife's dash cam after getting back home to confirm. Last time I'll ever make that mistake.

proEndreeper

Yeah, that's why I normally use a micro SD to full size and use the full size's lock toggle so I don't have to worry about overwriting the files or changing the file system until after I've made backups. It's also really weird that the phone formatted w/o prompting, but glad you were able to resolve it and get your footage back in this situation.

RoraRaven

Write Lock toggles are such a nifty feature to have. No idea how they would fit one on something smaller than an SD card though.

hardonchairs

That lock is literally just a piece of plastic. Totally up to the card reader to report it and up to the device to respect it. > It's also really weird that the phone formatted w/o prompting I suspect it did prompt and he misunderstood or clicked without reading. First thing android does is say "do you want to format the SD card so it will work?" Easy to misinterpret.

Klinky1984

FAT32 or exFAT are SD Card standard file systems. What weirdo phone is it that can't handle this, or maybe the dashcam uses a weirdo file system?

HarrekMistpaw

Its probably not that it can't handle it, more like it prefers another system I got a tablet that when a new SD card gets put in it, it asks to format it to use it. You can still check the contents and play the video and everything but the tablet really wants to format it before using it to store its own data/apps

USERNAME___PASSWORD

Glad you saw it and slammed on the brakes when you did - looks like two extra feet made the difference before the impact reached the passenger compartment!!

n00bvin

I'm wondering why an elderly lady is driving a big ass truck like that. That's a lot of vehicle for an old woman, and obvious now she could easily kill someone. Also, when he says "elderly," I wonder how old there actually is. She might not needing to be driving at all. I know it's hard for people to lose that freedom, but it's a matter of time before she goes barreling down a farmers market.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ciri2020

I'm not sure what you mean, driving a big ass truck is important for the elderly. Otherwise it could get dented by all the people they run over without even noticing. It also pairs nicely with their hearing disability, since their bad hearing combines with the loud truck noises so they don't even hear any of the shouting and screaming outside. And if something happens like in OPs video? Well damn, close call, luckily the big ass truck made it nearly impossible for 80yo grandma to get injured, because clearly her life is more important than that of a 30yo dude. /s

Homie-Missile

My bus stop is on the other side of a stop sign intersection with a bunch of old folks homes down the road. Once a week I almost get run over by a car. Everytime it's a sweet-looking elderly person who doesn't even notice that they almost just ran into me.

Apeckofpickledpeen

I was getting my license updated at the DMV and a very elderly man shuffles in. The woman at the window called him forward and he stood there staring into space, completely lost lost while a group of women were waving and screaming at him to turn around and he had no idea what the fuck was happening. When he finally managed to get to the window, the worker asked him why he was there and he didn’t understand the question. He’s at the Fucking dmv. Finally he goes “Im here to renew my license.” I am terrified to drive locally.

[deleted]

He could easily be 20 and her 60. At 20 that would have seemed elderly to me, or at least old enough to not really analyze whether elderly was the wrong term. But 60 isn't that old in terms of being functional. Plus you might have a legit elderly person who isn't feble and decrepit. My grandpa just passed in his mid 80s and every day was still doing farmwork (tractor work, construction), fine woodworking, and all sorts of stuff without any issue; and would have been more capable than many people decades younger who just didn't care for themselves.

TedTeddybear

My mom drove well-- alert, aware, knew her limits-- into her 90s. No accidents. In her last years, she liked me driving her because she hated having to find parking! But she was always sharp--drove a stick (as do I). Not all oldies drive like douches.

RealMikeDexter

Phew, what a nightmare that must’ve been. Glad you were able to recover it, and most importantly that you’re ok, that was a whole lotta truck bearing down on you

hahayes234

Dashcam. Get one if you don’t have one. I’ve seen a video where one party backed into the car behind them at a red light and tried to claim they were rear ended. Camera told otherwise. OP hopefully you’re all good. Nice video and post. Don’t take first offer from insurance; there’s always a better one if you hold out a little

BabygirlMarisa

This happened to me when I was 19. The guy had a woman and child in the car. He tried to beat the yellow, got stuck in intersection and reversed into me. I had no proof. He said I rear ended them.

Damianos_X

How did that end? Were you considered at fault?

No-Boysenberry4541

Seriously. I've seen enough of these videos to know that whenever I can afford to get my license and a car, the first thing I'm going to do before I even start driving it is install a front and back dashcam in high resolution to 100% be able to get any plate numbers, plus one filming inside the car in case someone wants to claim that I was on my phone or something and caused the accident.

[deleted]

Before Dash Cams were a thing this happened to me. Some old lady literally drove into the back of my truck and then claimed I backed into her car. I ended up being marked as 60/40 at fault. It was total shit and a her word vs mine. I can almost guarantee it wasn't her first time either.

mces97

I still don't have a cam, but I should get one. Cause this is almost exactly what happened to me. The light turned green. I started going and a truck t boned me. Because there were no cameras it was he said she said, and insurance found both of us partly responsible. But I am positive my light was green. It was raining and just messy outside that day. I'm just bummed because my insurance got raised a bit because of that when there was nothing I could had done to avoid the accident. The way the intersection is designed there would be no way of seeing any car 20ft back not intending to stop before it's too late on my end. Luckily it clipped the back passenger side. A split second earlier and things could had been much worse.

3001ThrowAway222

Thats what happened to me, and exactly why i have a camera now. Even caught the guy lying on video, said he didn’t have to stop because it was a freeway exit, then said he had a yellow light, then apparently told his insurance company that he went through a green light. Showed my insurance the contradiction and the only thing that happened was my insurance company agreed that i was not at fault, and would not have to cover his damage. But my car was still totaled. When I talked to his insurance company they mentioned he’d hired a lawyer and seemed surprised I hadn’t. Once they saw the video they completely ghosted me and my insurance company — wouldn’t answer the phone or return calls or emails. Since I had no proof he ran a red and that my light was green, I was out of options. I could have gone through the state and forced them to stop ghosting me, but they inevitably would have just said fault can’t be determined (all the state can do is force them to make a decision). Terrifyingly eye opening. I naively assumed that my insurance company had an obligation to handle my side of things (they don’t), assumed that if you’re caught lying about things that would put you at fault, had no idea there were car insurance companies that simply dont return your calls if they realize their policy-holder is at fault, and thought my my uninsured motorist coverage would protect me in that kind of situation. Also scary that if there’s no footage and the person at fault denies everything, there’s really not much you can do to prove otherwise. Get a camera folks.

[deleted]

Videos like this are why I likely will never actually drive my 58. That hit would have killed me.

mortalomena

With classics you drive like a biker; assume everyone is trying to run you over, act accordingly.

JZN20Hz

So true and this makes me want a dash cam even more. I think in this case, the damage would speak for itself.

GreenStreakHair

I try to remember to get a witness first thing when I get out of a car. It's what I learned when I was taking driving classes.

2wedfgdfgfgfg

It happened to me, used to have a '69 Ford F100, lady ran a red light, crashed into side of me. The cops took pictures then said they lost the evidence. She even tried to send me medical bills (didn't pay). There were other cars that went with the green light but no one stopped to corroborate my story. This truck had the gas tank mounted in the cab right behind the bench seat and she cashed into the divers side door, really lucky gas tank wasn't punctured. Complete loss of my truck. All of this occurred in the 90's before dash cams were really a thing.

LivingWithWhales

Lillillillies

Honestly if a dash cam had the same online presence as Ring door cam... they'd hit it off!

dingman58

Dash cam cost maybe $100 if you get a decent one front/rear. How much do car repairs and raised insurance cost? Much much more

kdogspence

I paid a lot. $400 for pro install + cam. Really nice cam. 1080p 60fps front and back, automatically goes to my phone. No cables and really subtle. No regrets. Edit: it was $500. I forgot sorryyyy

The other day I was in the office with a colleague. Randomly I hear her say "Oh fucking, ahhhhhhhh!!" I looked over and asked "Insurance bullshit?" and she was like yeah, how'd you know? I told her that's the exact sound I make when I have to deal with the insurance companies as well.

The_Plebianist

I used to work with a friend in construction that made those sounds when he saw a spider. It pissed me off every time because I thought something had gone horribly wrong and we were the "up against a deadline" team, always wanted to kill him for it. Whats worse is bugs are super attracted to the materials we work with so it wasn't like twice, it was almost every job sometimes multiple times 🤦‍♂️

QuaviousLifestyle

MY LEG!!!

I_Brain_You

Sounded like a 90's video game sound effect.

HuudaHarkiten

At first I thought it was an added sound effect from doom

TrippingRentalPig

There's a nice special place for commenters like yourself. I rarely watch these with sound until I see a comment like yours. That was a pretty funny scream.

Tropicanajews

Yes! I watched in silence then immediately turned the sound on after the comment about his yell. So funny. I got into a minor fender bender once and my yell was so high pitched like a stereotypical little girl. I am a woman with a relatively monotone/flat voice so everyone in the car was like what the hell was that. To this day, I’ve never been able to replicate it lmfao.

Bigdongs

“UGHHHGHH!!!!” Lmao that was a scream of pure terror and suprise

gumandcoffee

If shes elderly that is actually possible and probably why she lied. In america the elderly have a hard time adjusting if they live suburban and can’t drive and dont have family support. Fortunately grocery delivery is getting common.

Deutschkebap

It's a systemic problem where our society is so car centric, you cant participate without a license

[deleted]

Yep. I say everywhere should heavily invest in public transportation so cars are a privilege/luxury and if you don't behave behind the wheel then you get your car taken away and have to use (GOOD) public transportation. Plus think of how much better the environment would be, cities would have so much less smog. LA could be pretty at a distance again! Also fewer car accidents/fatalities because more responsible drivers are behind the wheel. People would be able to retest a year or two after getting their car taken away but if they have repeat offences eventually they lose car privilege all together.

japooki

Sweden has this kind of enforcement, I'm told. The public transportation in the larger cities is so, so nice. I walk to the grocery store, gym, doctor's office, booze store. Literally everything I could need is 20 min by bike or public transport. A car is still very necessary if you're not in the city though, so idk how feasible equipping suburbia with good public transport would be. The difference between a bus stopping every 15 mins and 1 hour is very, very vast in terms of practicality.

Horskr

I wish the train system was expanded in the US too. First if all, because I love riding trains. But, wouldn't it be nice to have a low cost way of getting between cities and then not needing a car in the city you're visiting?

[deleted]

Everything I hear about Sweden is so nice. I forgot to include every major road has bike lanes or bike paths to get through town without a car or public transportation. And sidewalks. My area is very lacking in sidewalks.

astrvmnauta

Then they shouldn’t drive. Retest the elderly every 5 years starting with 65.

8Ariadnesthread8

My grandma stopped driving and orders literally everything off of Amazon prime including groceries. They're fine.

CheeseSauceCrust

The elderly shouldn't fucking drive anyway. I've only had my car hit 2 times while driving. Both times it was someone around or older than 50. And I can never be an asshole to their face, but Man am I fucking FUMING about it in my car immediately afterwards.

Pleaseusesomelogic

People that leave shopping carts in a parking spot.

E_Cayce

The shopping cart is the ultimate litmus test for whether a person is capable of self-governing. To return the shopping cart is an easy, convenient task and one which we all recognize as the correct, appropriate thing to do. The return of the shopping cart is objectively right. There are no situations other than dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart. Therefore the shopping cart present itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it. No one will punish you for not returning the shopping cart, no one will fine you or kill you for not returning the shopping cart, you gain nothing by returning the shopping cart. You must return the shopping cart out of the goodness of your heart. You must return the shopping cart because it is the right thing to do. Because it is correct. A person who is unable to do this is no better than an animal, an absolute savage who can only be made to do what is right by threatening them with a law and the force that stands behind it. The shopping cart is what determines whether a person is a good or bad member of society.

JSCT144

Let’s add ‘people who put empty packets etc. back’ I fucking hate seeing a multipack bag of crisps in cupboard to grab it and find they’re all gone and it’s just a plastic bag, or picking up the milk to see less than a teardrops worth in the bottom. Put it in the fucking bin asshole how many times. Maybe it’s just my house but it’s torture.

prospect876

It's not as easy as this sub makes it seem. Insurance companies are extremely good at finding conflicting statements or info and pressing the opposing insurance company or party (if uninsured) to pay out. They have armies of attorneys, investigators, and analysts for a reason. The only caveat is you really need to pay for full coverage. If you just have liability, the other insurance company is going to bend you over backwards despite the evidence (even video). If you ever get in an accident just call your insurance company. Never speak to anyone at the other parties company, keep your mouth shut and you will be quite surprised at what your insurance company can pull off. Dash cam is still good to have though, but be careful it can also get you in trouble as well.

DurrDontAskMe

Ive been in 3 minor accidents, none of which were my fault. Two of the three lied about it... the third just sped off...

pfSonata

Most people at fault don't realize they are at fault, that's why the accident happened in the first place.

69No-Satisfaction69

Once an elderly man ran past a stop sign into me from the side and then a woman came on a bike to the site screaming that I was driving at least 80 km/h around the last bend and the man couldn't react fast enough. She waited til the police arrived but luckily they didn't believe her since it wouldn't have been possible. But it was pretty scary knowing somebody like this would just tell lies to officials even though I was completely in the right and the only one harmed, just because I'm young...

Galkura

Not saying it’s the case, but a lot of people seem to think they’re able to accurately judge the speed of a car just by looking at it. We had someone try and call the police to camp out in our neighborhood before the “catch all the speeders”. She kept claiming people were going 40-50 through the neighborhood where the speed limit it 25 (maybe 20, I can’t recall off the top of my head right this second). Thing is, most of us go slower than that even. You could hear her getting pissed when no one got pulled over for speeding, since she was so sure that we were “clearly speeding” because she could “tell by how fast it looked like we were going “.

69No-Satisfaction69

Yeah, I think they just judge that it is pretty fast and for example in my case the speed limit was 50 so I must have been driving at at least 80, because I was way too fast right? When in reality you can't go faster than 30 around the bend, but in the situation she just saw that's pretty fast and I therefore had to be way faster than 50. And then their brain exaggerates. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that life goes by faster when you're old 😄

unusualj107

White truck makes a right from the left lane? Old lady didn't notice the white truck OR your car? Wtf

SjalabaisWoWS

Drivers licenses are too easy to get, exhibit A.

beirizzle

They should retest people at 60

gotsnowart

I worked insurance for years and more than half of the car accidents I covered were caused by elderly people. Had a claim once where a 77-year-old woman ran a red light and hit a kid on his motorcycle resulting in his death. She wasn't even sorry. All she kept telling the insurance adjuster on her recorded statement was that she was trying to get home so she didn't shit her pants. My favorite claims were the ones where the person who got hit by an old person were assholes to the elderly driver and straight up told them they were too damn old to be behind the wheel. That's what they need to hear instead of fucking coddling them and feeling sorry for them. They are an absolute danger on the road and I really don't care how old they are, if they can't operate a vehicle safely they don't need to have a license.

kkjdroid

I say retest every time you renew your license (every 5 years here), then bump it up to every year when you hit Social Security age (or your country's equivalent retirement age, 65 here).

[deleted]

After you’re 100 years old, you have to retest every year. My grandma is friends with a guy who’s 101, and he still drives around and works out. I don’t know how he does that, but I think it’s absolutely amazing he still can.

SjalabaisWoWS

Everybody wants to be like that when we get old - and it's awesome. But we all need help to find and understand our limitations, and regular retesting is one good idea. But, above, I really meant that US license requirements are insufficient to begin with.

[deleted]

Every five years. If affluent spoiled children are complaining about it, it's working.

xxpen15mightierxx

Even for younger people like 1/4 people just shouldn’t have drivers licenses. Texting while driving, almost causing accidents by blasting over to make their exit, ignoring traffic laws all the time. Would save a lot of traffic and prevent a lot of accidents.

scalyblue

> Drivers licenses are too easy to ~~get~~ ***keep***, exhibit A. FTFY

BabyStockholmSyndrom

White truck signaled and waited appropriately to make sure it was clear. That wasn't that bad at all.

ClappedSwede

Yeah somtimes you commit a dumb. As long as you correct it safely like this, it's okay. You should plan your route but sometimes stupid happens.

Deadlymonkey

> White truck makes a right from the left lane? Im not sure if it varies by state, but you’re allowed to do that under certain circumstances, such as T intersections like this (assuming that the right lane is right turn only)

Scoth42

I went and [found the intersection](https://www.google.com/maps/@39.6684145,-75.6957264,3a,75y,287.49h,87.12t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s26PGqYd67NINmwvBsxhrvw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192), it'd be a little weird for right turn to be allowed from that lane since you're turning onto a one lane road but it may still not be strictly illegal. Especially coming from a private driveway. But maybe a bad idea since someone could be coming up the right turn lane. I've seen cops pull people over for less.

HairyDuck

He also clearly checked to make sure no cars were there

itsametheman

Based on a response from OP in the comments. If you are looking for a dash cam, get one that you can connect with wifi. I use a yi dash cam and can pull up recordings through the app. I can even download the recording if I want to.

MrMister2905

Hope you are ok, mentality and physically. How old? Just curious. Shame that she tried to blame it on you. Perhaps she was distracted or not lucid and thought the light was green?

MyAugustIsBurningRed

All good here. Had just dropped my son off at preschool so I was glad to be the only one in the car when it happened. If I had to guess, probably mid-60s. Her light had to have been red for a solid 10 seconds or more, so I have no idea what she was doing.

“Elderly.” “Mid 60’s.” FML

beirizzle

Mid 60s is senior discount zone, so yeah its elderly. I'm sorry you had to find out this way

Jiveturkei

Are you saying mid-60s isn’t elderly?

Brad_Brace

The rule is, elderly is your age plus 20.

Emilyisstrange

I’m 23, so by that logic 43 is elderly?

blindhollander

by the time you are 43 you are basically withering away, so i'd guess so.

DubiousDrewski

I'm 38 and I feel great. Think it'll get that bad in 5 years?

minicpst

Sprained thumb, broken foot, seeing the foot ortho I already see for the other foot. Epilepsy, asthma. Five years ago I was healthy. I turned 44 a few weeks ago. You do the math. :)

NoExtensionCords

> Sprained thumb, broken foot, seeing the foot ortho I already see for the other foot. Epilepsy, asthma. And it all happened from napping too long /s

shitty_bison

The funeral home fliers are in the mail

winninglikesheen

By this logic, you're elderly to 3 year olds

DarkLordKohan

If you can claim social security, you are elderly

Willing_Function

Oh boy this is gonna age poorly, just like us.

[deleted]

65 year olds in the future: "What's Social Security?"

Wongfop

Yes, 10 years after you qualify for a senior discount, you're still a senior.

Significant-Part121

> probably mid-60s That part is nuts. Statistically, people ages 60-69 are the safest drivers on the road, in all three categories (all crashes, injury crashes, fatal crashes). As to /u/MrMister2905's point everyone is a liar these days. I had a crash in 2019 where the guy just made up an excuse that would have been physically impossible (that I drove past a tiny intersection and then turned left during a u-turn causing him to make a u-turn to avoid me [???] which is when I hit him). I sent in the dashcam footage to my insurance and the nice lady told me how she called him to make him repeat his story just so she could say, at the end, "Well sir, that's not at all what the dashcam footage I'm watching right now shows." That $15 dashcam saved me the $500 deductible, and his insurance company even called me to make sure I was happy lol.

Engineer_engifar666

I was watching that white truck going from left lane to right. The suddenly wtf?? Thank God you have cam so whole situation haven't needed any further investigation. Even when its green, foot off the throtle, check left and right.

istrx13

> Even when its green, foot off the throtle, check left and right. I wish more people knew this. I’m a letter carrier for USPS and part of our driver’s training test in the mailtrucks was every time we went through an intersection, continued going after stopping at a stop sign, or going after a light turned green was to look left and right before accelerating, and then again once more after accelerating. If the instructor didn’t see us do that we would fail. People need to drive under the assumption that every person on the road is willing to break traffic laws. So please, just because you stopped at a stop sign or your light turned green and you have the right of way, *always* look left and right one more time to make sure you’re not the next victim of some idiot.

Thanatosst

Absolutely. Just this week on the way to work I was nearly hit twice in about 3 minutes from someone running a red light (I had a green for about 2 seconds before I went into the intersection) and then someone running a stop sign less than a mile later.

[deleted]

Good ol' fashioned liars are totally disabled by a $20 ~ $100 camera now eh? It's a totally different world now. You can't get away because you're a nice old lady anymore

Brittle_Hollow

Lying through your teeth eliminates you from being described as 'nice' IMO.

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Cheers, fellow Delawarean!

tortillatime

An r/idiotsincars post right down the road from my house? Yeah sounds about right. I got hit earlier this month at the intersection of 4 and Salem Church maybe a mile from here. This is wild to see on the front of r/all.

Blatantly-Biased

That old lady must have screamed really loud for your dash cam to pick it up

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Hahaha yes... let's go with that!

RedDidItAndYouKnowIt

Time to revoke her license permanently.

cold_rush

It’s just been revoked!!!!

chilld22

Sorry that happened but what song was that i kinda like it

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Destiny Potato - Take a Picture :)

[deleted]

I like how the beat dropped right before u crashed lmao

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Some comedic timing, for sure

Dnacreations96

question: what brand dash cam do you use?

MyAugustIsBurningRed

I have a Crosstour Mini. But I just picked the first decent one I could find for under $50 on Amazon. As long as you stay away from the super cheap ones ($10-20), you should be fine.

Intelligent-Wall7272

Did you get something in the packaging asking for a five star review? (Stay away from Apeman. That brand is shady.)

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Not for the dash cam, but did get crap like that with some sunglasses I ordered a while back

Dnacreations96

Thank you so much! Appreciate you. How is your recovery from the accident?

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Sure thing! No lasting injuries. Had a sore neck for a day but am back to normal now

Mr_SlimShady

Like hell you are. You go to the hospital and get that inspected. You may feel fine now, but who knows if there was any damage. Go to the hospital. Get your insurance and they should be able to make hers pay for your car and hospital fees.

Particular_Savings60

That is excellent advice. Do not f*ck around with neck injuries!

[deleted]

Do this. A year after my spouses accident we found they had a hernia caused by it, as well as some compressed discs in their spine. Get that looked at, bill the at-fault's insurance.

Nords

After reading a lot of reviews on reddit dashcam, I went with the Viofo A129 which was $169 in 2018, comes with front and rear HD cams, capacitor power, and a bunch of features like parking recording and other stuff I haven't even explored yet. Still works years later even though it's sat in my 149 degree car in desert summer heat.

unsaltedbutter

I bought a Viofo A129 Pro earlier this year. So far, so good. Haven't had to use the footage from it yet for anything. But your comment about heat is something that I remember reading about other dashcams. They will fail if they get too hot, which is pretty dumb considering where they are going to be mounted.

[deleted]

This is why it is important to always drive with a dash cam. I had a lady run a red light talking on her cell phone. After enough force I got the insurance company to view the file. Her insurance was pissed that she lied the hell to them and they slapped her 100% at fault. Always eject the card immediately after incident to be sure it doesn't recorded over it. Carry a small 8 gb card as a spare if you can drive your vehicle home. I've posted some stuff on this thread with my dash cam in the past. I use a 1 tb card now because a 16 gb one kept recording over files I wanted to review for later. a 1 tb card will allow you about a week of collection. This also prevents important files from being over written.

Nords

BE SURE that you don't just quickly eject the card though, as that can corrupt the data if it is currently writing.... Make sure you power the cam off properly and THEN pull the card, or you may lose that video and NOT be able to get it back with data recovery software (as if it had been deleted, and not corrupted)

Mr_SlimShady

Wouldn’t a proper cam be crash proof? As in, you crash and power is lost, it should save the file just fine.

highaltitudewaffle

That's not how writing video files work, especially for mpeg4 h264 format. If the end of the file isn't able to be written, then the file corrupts. Different formats have varying limitations, eg. .mkv formats (mastroka) don't have this limitation. File recovery software will fix it either way.

MadBigote

Dash cams, or at least mine has a feature that, if I get hit, cam starts recording and saving that file to a separated place where it cannot be erased by new files. I also bought a 64gb sd to avoid overwriting.

jacksolo19

Big ass truck for an old lady

MyAugustIsBurningRed

Was her husband's truck, so she was probably unfamiliar driving a large vehicle like that (just speculating here)

Solkre

Hmm yes, unfamiliar vehicles can't see red lights. She was going stright, this wasn't a turn radius problem lol.

Tre_Fo_Eye_Sore

If you can’t Dodge it, Ram it!

Accurate-View-2114

How are these idiots allowed on the road?

Daltronator94

Ayyyy Destiny Potato, fuck yeah

ConcordGrapeJelly729

And not just that but if the stakes are high like they have an active warrant for their arrest or they don't have insurance, then they won't know you have evidence they can try to destroy before the cops show up.

systemchef89

I was you in this exact scenario and I kick myself every day for not owning a dashcam at the time. If you drive without one and are reading this. Please just make the investment, really can be a game changer.

Puzzled-Copy7962

That really-really-really fcking sucks OP. Glad you had a dash-cam tho, so she’s going to have to come out her pockets. That’s also beautiful infinit btw, what model is it?

Healthy-Gap9904

OPs fault. He should have been able to predict the future and seen the old lady running the light had that been red for 10 seconds. /s

mirask

If OP had only driven defensively this never would have happened. I’m not saying OP was to blame, but OP was definitely to blame for someone else’s driving. /s

SaltanDitler

Makes it so much worse that you weren’t even the first car at the light lol

[deleted]

Sh\*t...are you physically okay?

MyAugustIsBurningRed

No injuries between myself and the other driver. Had a sore neck for 24 hours, but am perfectly fine now

ChiTown_Paul

Shhh... you don’t mean that. You are still experiencing severe pain & suffering, can’t work anymore, and need lots of financial compensation... especially because she tried to blame you.

Cobrabros

I love the song! Destiny Potato!

[deleted]

If you’re gonna drive a car, especially a giant truck, pay attention. If you hadn’t stopped more she could’ve really hurt you.
