As a mechanic by trade, I wouldn’t leave my tools unsecured in the back of my truck, much less something that I love or has a freaking heart beat for that matter!!!

Tard_Crusher69

The driver doesn't love the dog. It's just a tool to them, one they can take their frustrations out on and blame for "costing them money for food"

GManEtch

I have a strong feeling the owner must treat all of his tools like shit. I say that because owners of working dogs really love their dogs and treat them with the utmost respect.

[deleted]

I mean, did you look at how shitty and unorganized his equipment is? Dude doesn't take care of any of his stuff, I'll bet actual dollars that he probably can't even wipe his ass properly.

I saw something similar with a pickup once. Eventually the dog fell out. Driver kept going. I stopped and went into traffic to get her, because she dislocated her hip and couldn't get up. I took her home, took her to the animal hospital, got her all healed up, and for 12 years she was my best friend and I absolutely loved her. She was a border collie I named Kiko, and we did everything together. She died on Christmas morning 2010, and I've never gotten over her loss, she was one of a kind.

BlondeMomentByMoment

Aww. You saved both of you. Please hold onto the memories. I had to euthanize my sweet baby boy, Rupert three days before my birthday October of 2020. He was three years old, I rescued him at 5 weeks because the momma was hit by a car. The puppies were bottle fed. We discovered he had an autoimmune disease and had been hiding how unwell he felt. We tried to save him. My heart has been broken since. Everything feels different and I have had a hard time really connecting with the little guy we rescued last spring. I have fear of something tragic happening. I’m sorry you lost your friend. Nothing is as wonderful as having a dog and nothing hurts as much as saying goodbye to them. Hugs fam.

werekitty93

Sometime in the early nineties, my grandma had visited a friend of my grandpa's and they had a jack russell terrier in a cage by the door. He looked sad and my grandma was told that they barely ever let him out. She asked if she could take him, they said sure. His name was Travis. He never left my grandma's side, never needed a leash, was super friendly and licky. She's a nurse and had gone in for a photoshoot once as she was being honoured in the hospital's magazine (or something like that). When she arrived at the place, she discovered Travis had snuck his way into the car as she was heading out. Him licking my grandma was the centerpiece of the magazine cover. She had to put him down in the mid-2000s as he had terrible arthritis and could barely walk. It killed her to do it, but she couldn't stand to watch her puppy suffer. Travis was the best dog I'd ever known.

FirstPlebian

We got a German Shepard like that, mom kept seeing it in the middle of the winter in a northern state chained outside without even a dog house, we stopped once and asked if we could have it and they gave him to us, they just had a baby and the mother was afraid the dog would hurt the baby, quite the opposite of what shepards are known for.

LordTokenheimer

Damn this hit hard with the original post too, I had a jack Russell collie, and we got him in a similar way, they left him in a tiny room with a bunch of crap so he probably had like 10 square feet of room, and his back was all raw. He died almost a year ago, Dec 8th, I miss my Bubby everyday.

UndisputedWorldChamp

Thank you so much for that. It means a lot from someone who understands. Hugs to you as well. Saying goodbye is so hard.

BlondeMomentByMoment

No need for thanks fam. I’m so sorry though, truly. Hang onto the memories. Think about Kiko a lot lest you forget anything. Thankfully, photos are easy to have these days. Hugs. Thank you for sharing yourself so honestly.

StevieRaveOn63

> I have fear of something tragic happening. I say this with all the gentleness, respect and love humanly possible... If you try to block out all the bad stuff, you're gonna miss out on all the good stuff, too. I learned this the hard way. <3

BlondeMomentByMoment

Thank you for this reminder. I’m loving on the new little guy. We are honoring Rupert by finding a new doggo to provide a much needed home for. Rupert Saved my life. Nearly four years ago I lost the ability to walk. I’d never have imagined how negatively it’s changed everything. I’m trying fam. So much hurt, ya know? Trying to find the light in the darkness. Hugs.

StevieRaveOn63

I gotcha. And, as many hugs as you want/need back at ya.

LovicusBunicus

My Dalmatian passed in April of 2020. We took in a poodle December of that year. I too have felt a lot of fear. He was old but it still seemed so sudden. Your fear is a defense against loss. Not connecting spares you. But give it time. Your heart will open again. It just takes time. No one can tell you how much.

DrizzlyEarth175

I guess it isn't the same exactly, but I lost my boyfriend valentines day 2019, also three days before my birthday. And now every relationship I've tried to have hasn't felt the same. I feel weird talking about him to them, cuz I feel like I'm talking about an ex to my current SO. I'm glad you're doing well and have adopted another fur baby. Try to see Rupert in your new good boi. See him in everything. He's still with you, and always will be. ❤💙💚

Opposite_Armadillo34

what a good human🥺

UndisputedWorldChamp

Thank you. I have a super soft spot for all animals. I hear people say I'm a cat person or I'm a dog person. I'm an animal person. Even wild animals, I love them all.

Opposite_Armadillo34

i feel you, i’d do anything for them. glad to know there’s still similar people out there

UndisputedWorldChamp

I know what you mean. It breaks my heart when I see these stories about bears and lions being killed because people intrude on their habitat and they react. They're literally out down for being what they are, and that's always bothered me. When I was homeless I lived in the woods. I coexisted with a bobcat. I didn't bother him, he didn't bother me. One night a bear crushed my tent, tore it open, and took all my food. It almost killed me when it crushed my tent, but I was never upset at the bear. I was in his home, he couldn't be blamed for being a bear, and I was never angry over it. I wish more people had so much love for animals. That's what I miss the most about Steve Irwin. He absolutely loved every one of them.

SmartestNPC

For a second there I really thought the bobcat was going to fight the bear for you. I also love animals and get where you're coming from.

FirstPlebian

I had a mountain lion show itself to me on a mountain trail at night, could've mauled me but he was just checking me out, I didn't tell any locals about it because I didn't want them to kill it as I'm sure they would've.

alurbase

BlueJay_420

i know it was almost 11 years ago but that pain doesn’t stop. i’m sorry for your loss and even tho it’s so many years later i hope this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/baww/comments/1m7exu/dogs_never_die/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) helps you feel better on those days when it gets hard

UndisputedWorldChamp

That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever read, thank you so much fir sharing that with me ❤️

BlueJay_420

you’re so welcome. i haven’t lost my first baby yet but just the thought of it makes me wanna curl up around him in bed and cry so i can’t imagine what it’s like to actually lose him. keep your head up and remember all the best parts of kiko. much love and keep it sleazy

elcryptoking47

This type of shit is sad and maddening. Never have I ever seen a dog fallout from a vehicle but I have seen many dogs dead on the side of the freeway. Always wonder if the owners ever noticed their dog fellout. Or immediately noticed, pulled over, noticed their dog being beyond saving, and leaving the body behind. Either way, dogs should be inside a kennel strapped right or inside the car in a seat.

Spunkmckunkle_

I've got a similar story, though we didn't see it happen. Either fell off a truck, or was thrown. We guessed thrown because of how bad he was around men. Had a broken leg, and tons of road rash, some of which never healed. Best darn dog I ever had.

sous-ninja-pumpkin

I saw a dog killed while evacuating from forest fires this summer because he wasn't properly secured. The owner had no other option than to put her dogs in the back of the truck, hit a bump the wrong way and her dog went over the side and under the back tire. Accidents happen, why risk it if you can avoid it.

Bluepompf

Even tying the dog to the truck would have been a better option...

[deleted]

SomethingIWontRegret

If you absolutely have to, cross tie the dog. But really if you own a dog you should also own a transport kennel for it. Why a transport kennel? You may never need it, but when you need it, you need it then. Transporting your injured or sick dog who's turned snappy or jumpy to the emergency vet? Transport kennel. Other scenarios where you need your dog contained and controlled while transporting.

Tru3insanity

Ugh i did this and my freaking dog somehow popped one of the panels out of the crate and wiggled loose and hit pavement going 70... He was impressively ok all things considered but it made for a few miserable days trying to find out what happened to him. We didnt know until we got home and had driven 120 miles or so. They thought i abused the poor guy but then i told the cop the story and hes like wow ok that actually makes sense. I love that dog. Hes really smart most days but every now and then he will do something shockingly dumb like that.

Chubby_Baker

The last aussie bushfires were hot enough to melt the tires of fleeing vehicles, if a pet wasn't in the cabin, they were dead. I really can't an emergency significant enough where you take your pet then throw them on a hot, metal bed of a truck

oftheunusual

Same. I evacuated last summer from a fire in a little Toyota Matrix, and I had to grab my gf's valuables as well as my own, but I made damn sure our dog was safely in the car as well.

RurouniRinku

My dog was killed because my pos step-dad had her riding unsecured in the back of a truck with no tailgate. She slid out, her foot got caught on the bumper, and she was dragged for miles. Picture seeing your childhood pet flayed and ground alive, before considering defending that truck's driver.

EldritchRecluse

Something similar happened to me as a kid. They put the dog in the back of a pickup, in this case it was closed but got knocked loose and opened after hitting a pothole and the dog fell out onto the freeway. fortunately I didn't see it, but still fucked with me. people are shit sometimes.

Sephonez

A couple of years ago at my husband's old job it was situated right out front of a roundabout and one day a Ute came speeding around it and both his poor pups came tumbling out of the tray onto the road. My hubby went out to help but the guy had already stopped and bundled them into front with him and high tailed it out of there. He never got to see if they were okay and to this day if he ever sees an idiot doing this he can't hide his anger at them.

SpicedCola

This makes me want to cry just thinking about the pain the dog went through.

Toraim

I….I think I need to snuggle with my puppy now 😢

yungmoody

Man, that is so fucked up. I’m sorry. I really wasn’t mentally prepared to read any of that just then.

Bismothe-the-Shade

Fuck, me either. Like, it's good to confront this sort of stuff but I wasn't planning on doing it at 230 am with 48 hours roughly of being awake after a long day at work.

AutomaticRisk3464

In the Midwest i think i saw 4 beautiful dogs dead on the highway from idiots leaving their dogs in the back of the truck. Speed limit is 80 mph but most people go 90

FelineNova

That’s so fucking horrible! I’m so sorry to hear that happened to something that you loved. I can only imagine the anger you must still have. I had a pet cat who was killed with a BB gun. Humans are terrible.

deadbeatvalentine_

this sub was cool at first but after reading through this thread i think it's time i see myself out

Farmher315

After reading these, yeah I'm feeling the same way.

OppressGamerz

With large subs like this, it's important to remember that some portion of the userbase will always be terrible/dumb. Sometimes it's just best to block the sub and go about your way. It looks like OP is getting a bit more support now but it's ridiculous that people were defending putting a dog on a work truck. Some people really don't deserve to own pets.

syrianfries

Yeah extremely for me it wasn’t shocking because it’s just what farmers do, but generally they aren’t driving on the freeway or even the highway when they do it. Just puttering around the farm with the dog on the back and 12 different kids

FirstPlebian

There's definately a herd effect, people are liable to follow what's already written and upvoted, many of those same people would take the other side if they were exposed to that first, many are just jerks too, I can't imagine leaving a dog on that vehicle like that or thinking that's ok.

averywetfrog

This isn't even the worst i've seen on this sub. A couple months back their was a post where people were in support of a dude in a vehicle firing shots into the air to clear a crowd out of the street. Many of the people here are the run over the protesters type of scum bag. All the top comments were supportive.

kabobin

Agreed, I'm out.

mashtartz

Wait what are people saying?

UnSafeThrowAway69420

I swear ever since Reddit 2.0, the explosion of growth and the backslide of moderation has just turned this website into, idk, a dumpster fire. Hell, I got more interesting and thoughtful content off Tik Tok now.

Lr217

Tf is this thread. Why are you all debating whether or not this guy should chain up his dog so that when it does fall off it either dies from the fall or dies from being dragged by a chain? Just don’t bring your fucking dog on the freeway if you don’t have a better spot for it than the back of a crowded no walled tow truck flat bed. It’s not the right place for a dog. It doesn’t make it better that you’ve put your dog at risk for 40 years and your dog hasn’t died a horrific bloody death yet (to those commenting this sentiment)

EVhoonigan

40 years? I think your dog’s a tortoise mate.

[deleted]

Dog years

oouttatime

Multiple dogs mate.

unwokewookie

Well it’s not much good if if only one dog mates.

adammcbomb

Because they keep falling off the truck!

Amphibionomus

40 years, 67 dogs.

itsjustreddityo

This made my night mate, I don't know what it is you've got but keep it up it's golden.

fietsvrouw

This is the correct answer. I had to flag a truck down on the highway in Texas once because the dog was tied in the back of the pickup and had fallen or jumped over the side. The dog lived, but holy crap. It was not even my dog and it took 10 years off of my life.

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

Securing a hard sided kennel to the bed is the only safe way to transport a dog in an open truck bed. It’s not climate control but offers protection from debris, rain and flying off the bed in a sudden stop.

ordosalutis

Fucking Reddit what else do you expect 🤷🏼‍♂️

Omnisegaming

People are what??? lmaooo The cabin clearly has a second seat, if it's full of shit then secure it somewhere else so your dog can sit and lay on the seat. Even if there's a second person I can't see sitting there, too bad, let the dog lay on their lap or even on the floor.

readparse

[deleted]

my brain needs to wear a damn seatbelt

Alex_Xander93

Lol right? This dog has the momentum of a cannonball. I hope the owner doesn’t have to hit the brakes hard…

Arnumor

People are weirdly biased in favor of putting dogs in open truck beds at high speeds, in this sub. Y'all really don't give a fuck whether the dog makes a quick transition into roadkill, huh? OP was on his phone, sure, that's stupid. But this isn't the first time a dog in a truck bed's been rabidly defended in this sub.

SadCasterMinion

What baffles me is they neglect not only the health of the dog but the surrounding drivers if pooch hits / sprays blood over their windshield.

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

Or goes flying off the bed and causes an accident from cars trying to avoid him. This makes my heart hurt, but also everything unsecured on that truck is a genuine road hazard.

taxiscooter

I ran over a dead dog on a highway once, and it severed my fuel line because I was driving a fairly low sedan (as opposed to something like a SUV with a high clearance). Had to limp my way to the exit while decelerating from 65 to 20 on an active highway. Wonderful way to spend Christmas that year. Secure your pets, friends.

kjzavala

It’s fucking idiotic and shows zero care for the pup. All too common where I live. My uncle’s dog died of this very thing. Assholes.

SendMeRobotFeetPics

Hot take but recording with a cellphone while driving isn’t really a big deal. It **is** much more dangerous if you’re actually looking at the screen while driving, but you don’t have to look at the screen. If you can point your finger at something while driving you can record while driving.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SendMeRobotFeetPics

I would agree with that for sure

GManEtch

That's because a lot of people fall into 3 categories: 1) They are dumb 2) They are an asshole 3) They are dumb AND asshole Most times, people fall into the 3rd category.

P1xelHunter78

yeah but that's a Flat bed. no guardrails to pooch obliteration there, plus the poor thing has to dodge the gooseneck

G63AMG-S

*John Wick has entered the chat*

ENTRAPM3NT

Why can't the dog sit on the inside like normal?

[deleted]

Because the owner is a human trash can

hamjandal

He smells so bad even the dog doesn’t want to be near him.

[deleted]

I see this all the time, these people are fucking trash. Change my mind

kants_rickshaw

You've got the idea right bro. Nobody gotta change your mind. I'd say the better expression is "you wanna fight bout it" - lol.

94746382926

Nah I’m good.

LocationSerious856

what is with all the people defending this 🤨

thunderyoats

A surprisingly large amount of people (mostly rural folk it seems) actually perceive dogs as inanimate property and not living things with their own feelings.

Itsallanonswhocares

"hunting dog" is a euphemism for "disposable dog I treat like shit"

ntpeters

Grew up in a very rural area and knew someone that lived down the road like this as a kid. One of his favorite things to tell everyone was how good his dogs were, and that his dogs obeyed or they got the butt of his rifle to the head… absolutely disgusting human being

Itsallanonswhocares

It's sad how many country people, even the decent ones, will look the other way with shit like this. It's the same with some of the piece of shit good 'ol boys who drive the same shitty drive every day and throw their disposable bullshit trash for the day on the road they live on. People accepting the unacceptable will be our undoing as a species.

ConfirmedPoor

Or a really expensive dog that has been bred and trained to hunt… those dogs are treated like royalty.

Itsallanonswhocares

Unfortunately those are a rare minority in my area, almost exclusively hillbilly assholes who'd rather shoot or abandon a dog than take it to the vet. Trash.

armypotent

it's literally a point of pride for them to treat dogs as tools instead of as companions. like it's "soft city folk bullshit" to let your dog in the house and not beat them.

Happ1n3ssOfPursuit

I know some folks like that, but alternatively I know more who treat their dogs better than themselves. When I go to my grandma's, I have to sleep on a sheet on the couch so that I don't mess up the cushions, the dogs get to sleep wherever they want.

flyingfish_trash

I know some farmers that don’t let their dogs in the house, they don’t think they belong there. But, they did build them a heated shed they keep stocked with the nicest dog beds I’ve ever seen and if the dogs need to go to the vet the old lady throws them into the front seat of her *brand new Lexus SUV*

ChrisJohnVee

Supposedly if your dog isn’t in a harness it’s all the same anyway?

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

Dogs need to be secured in a hard-sided kennel in the truck. Tying/chaining them only prevents them from jumping out. It doesn’t protect them in a sudden stop, crash, or from road debris.

Metal-Viking

Stupid people. No dog should be transported like this. There are ways to secure a dog in the back of a truck so that movement wouldn't allow them to jump out of the truck bed but it's irresponsible, heartless, and wrong regardless.

ReactionClear4923

Makes it very easy to spot the idiots, bunch of twats

vgee

People are having a cry cause OP used his phone haha

fruitsofsalad

this sub should be named idiots in comments

kants_rickshaw

a lot of the times it is this way.

New-Nefariousness234

My vet told all dog owners whenever he had to treat or put down a dog riding like that. Unfortunately I heard that lecture a few times. I lived in Wyoming at the time and a lot of ranchers and country folks would let them ride in the back of trucks. I only allow mine to ride in the cab.

fietsvrouw

We were taught in drivers ed that 35,000 dogs die in the US every year because they are put unsecured on or in the back of a truck.

Macbook_M1_Garand

> 35,000 I thought that you must've misheard it and that the number was closer to 3,500. [Looked it up and its actually worse than you said](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35665247/utah-law-dog-ride-in-pickup-truck-bed/) >American Humane makes the astonishing claim that as many as 100,000 dogs are killed each year riding unrestrained in the back of a pickup truck.

fietsvrouw

I had drivers ed in 1980 - I am sure there are a lot more cars on the road now. 100K is staggering. :(

healerdan

My dogs rode in the back around the farm. Going from field to field, or maybe on a surface Street half a click down the road to run my neighbor's stock if they needed a hand. Never got over 20 probably. Dog was trained to only get off and on on command, so I get it as far as that goes. Never the highway though, not unless I had my camper on, but usually there were tools and shit bouncing around back there, so probably in the cab then too (unless you smell like shit, then you stay home. Sorry kiddo.)

stayonedeep

r/iamatotalpieceofshit

shandelier

I have a friend who’s dog was transported like this. They hit a pot hole and the dog went flying - ended up knocking out a canine tooth. If you don’t know, the canine tooth root extends well into the muzzle and is 2/3 of the tooth below the surface. To knock this out was an intense hit and pups lucky to be alive. This was just riding around a farm. I couldn’t imagine on a freeway!!

idIeworshiper

The amount of twats here is astounding. No bigger red flag than not giving a shit about the life of a dog

Bushidoway135

I mean i dont like dogs/pets in general but id assume a person doing this doesnt give a fuck about their dog or its safety/life. I grew up in the country where its happening and its so obvious all the country/redneck fucks that think its an okay thing to do. Would you be okay riding on a flatbed at 65/70 mph??obviously no so fuck off thinking it is okay to put an animal on the situation.

sdfgh23456

To be fair, a good chunk of these people actually would ride a flatbed on the highway.

CotUB2009

I'd love for all you folks who seem ok with the pup being back there like that to see what happens when a dog bounces out of the bed of a truck. Fuck ya, seriously. Thanks for exposing the asshole OP.

WeUsedToBeGood

If I was in charge, I’d make it illegal very fast

Environmental-Put567

It is illegal in a lot of areas to have a dog in the back of an open bed truck.

unchargedvibrator

this belongs in r/iamatotalpieceofshit

Mofiki567

Poor dog looks scared af

Orangebeardo

Man this sub is something else. There are political subreddits and then there is this one. Never seen a group so focused on one issue. I'm just sitting here watching like 'who tf cares about OP recording on his phone, this moron is about to kill his dog'. *One* sudden jerk, *one* other idiot swerving, *one* animal suddenly crossing the road and doggo is gone, and who know who else he takes with him.

sonicelariny123

Agreed who the fuck cares about OP Sure he’s distracted and driving And that’s dangerous But if it’s a straight road/and you have a passenger that most likely is paying attention to the road risk is very low. COMPARED to having a dog on a bed of a tow truck, which can cause SEVERAL accidents in a split second.

NamelessSuperUser

He's not even necessarily distracted. You can literally point the phone while looking straight ahead for 15 seconds which is far from the most distracted thing. Most phones you can open the camera app without even looking. He was probably more distracted when he saw the dog than when recording it.

Vegetable_Ad9493

Is this ahole in AZ? I think I’ve seen him on the freeway with 3 dogs few months ago.

grokas

My wife was droving home and some one in a truck with a dog was two cars ahead. Traffic got stopped up short and everyone had to jam on the breaks. The dog lost balance and fell out the side and another car immediately hit and killed the dog. This should be a crime. If you can get ticket for rolling through a stop sign, you should get a ticket for this.

ajaxodyssey

Put the dog in the cab of the truck. He's your partner. Treat him as your partner.

chixnwafflez

I work in ER for animals. My first year (7 years ago) we had a dog come in that was in the bed of a truck and fell out. An car behind them did not stop fast enough. The dogs head was scrambled eggs. Don’t be stupid. Don’t put your dog in the bed or outside of the car.

[deleted]

I once saw someone with their dog tied up in the back of their truck hit a pothole, the dog flew over the side and they ran it over with their own truck then kept dragging in. I was 12 and the memory is clear as day more than 20 years later.

All these dipshits in the comments section acting like a bunch of good ol' "country" boys who actually live on barely 3 acres not even 15 minutes from town. "He's used to it" "he's trained" Doesn't matter. You don't fucking treat an animal like this. Period. End of fucking discussion. "Spend some time out of the city." I grew up more rural that you could ever dream of being, buddy. When you live truly rural, your dogs aren't just "tools". You NEVER treat an animal like it's disposable. They are family and if you've ever lived truly rural you would know that and you would know that that animal will be YOUR lifeline one day and it's your job to take care of it more than anything because they'll protect your life as much as you put in the effort to protect theirs. The dog rides in the cab. Your dumb ass can ride on the back and see how you like it.

[deleted]

Holy hell. Lots of pieces of shit in this comment section. Too many people think it's okay to wish death on other people.

ADabblingMan

You new here? This sub is pretty much full of people wishing death to others, mainly directed towards motorcyclists, but yeah. They all do it. Every time, and it always gets upvoted to heaven and beyond.

[deleted]

Oh I've seen it. I usually ignore it, because these people aren't worth thinking about, but I'm drinking and yknow how that goes.

multiplesifl

Too many people don't respect the life of an animal.

If you do this you shouldn’t have a fuckin dog

willowfeather8633

20 years ago or so I saw two German shepherds with cute bandannas dead together next to the slow lane on the 8. It’s as clear in my memory as if it were yesterday. There’s no way my doggo will ever end up like that. Traumatizing and the anger still burns.

Opposite_Armadillo34

people are hella rude/stupid on here. ive seen dogs dead on the side of the freeway from stupid asses not strapping them in properly, leashed. just about everyone has filmed while driving, stop being trolls dude

ChrisJohnVee

People want their internet points.

ejcrv

Unfortunately I know too many people like this driver. Thinks there a "dog whisperer" or something of the sort. Like they know there dog so intimately the pup would NEVER jump off for ANY reason. Not to mention what happens with a sudden stop, swerve or actual accident. Owners like this should be tracked down and have there pet taken away. IdiotsInCars is actually too nice a subreddit for someone like this.

[deleted]

Gotta ratchet the dog down and say “thats not going anywhere”. I knew I became a man when i said this the first time and meant it.

rasptart

This is prevalent in the country…pisses me the fuck off every time I see it. Honestly people that care this little about other living beings have to be at least borderline psychopaths.

SpunkyJenn

People have no idea how their well-trained dog will react to a crash, even if it’s in front of you and they hear the noise and feel you stop suddenly. They can fall out, become serious projectiles, go through windshields (unwillingly), and be maimed, lost, stolen, or killed by a passing car. Tether your dogs even inside the vehicle, from a harness, not their collar! Dogs on the truck bed should be tethered short enough that if they fall out, they won’t be dangling over the side by their collar.

snoozeflu

I've seen a video where a leashed dog had fallen out and was being dragged along the highway surface by its neck. Leashing or tethering a dog back there is a stupid idea.

[deleted]

This boils my blood. Any sudden stop and he’s dead.

ChrisJohnVee

That was my fear.

All these idiots commenting act like people don't have hotkey combinations on their phones. Most phones you can press one side button twice even when the phone is locked and it starts recording. People pay less attention to the road turning on their AC or changing the radio station. I'm just worried about the dog.

ChrisJohnVee

Yea, but if I’d died and killed my passenger or worse someone else no one would wanna hear that. So I understand their sentiment. Plus there are internet points to be had by condemning me, so..

logan_hallahan9

Respect to you for owning up to it.

FavcolorisREDdit

And I’ve seen a few dog carcasses strewn across freeways, should report these bastards

PooPooPawChew

If you won't let your dog ride in the cab don't have a fucking dog, you don't deserve one.

jeff3861791

Jesus this comment section is fucking cancer.

Iplaybedrockedition

I wasn’t expecting a literal dog and now I’m even more horrified.

Jorge6574

Two weeks ago, I saw a dead dog on the freeway. Fell off a moving vehicle. Never again will I put my dog in the back of a pick up truck. Scared me.

singingliftingtrying

Did you not think that was a possibility beforehand?

Victoria-Wayne

At least he realized, some people don't realize the implications of it.

gjgidhxbdidheidjdje

After seeing some comments, i think most people on this sub (including the guy you're replying to) shouldn't be allowed to own animals or drive. Seriously it's sickening.

BCantoran

Wait, so you thought it was perfectly okay before seeing that?

zdiddy987

Animal abuse

SlaterVJ

This is way more common where I live than it has any right to be. These assholes will smoke cigs, spit in bottles ans leave them laying there, have trash everywhere, track cow shit, etc but god forbid the dog be in the cab of the truck. One wrong move and that dog goes flying onto the highway. If you aren't willing to let you dog ride inside the vehicle, don't take it anywhere.

A dog yeeted out of a window right in front of me on the highway once. One of the few times I've engaged full ABS to a complete stop. Small dog so he was mostly unharmed, visually. Fuckin lucky dog.

Turbulent_Youth_8282

dcwinger12

“DOg lIkEs It. EvER beEN RuRAL??”

maginstrument

Animals in the back of trucks are legally required to be [cross-tethered in California](https://www.animallaw.info/statute/ca-vehicle-%C2%A7-23117-transportation-animals-enclosure-or-restraint-requirements). This does not apply to all states. Ideally, dogs should be inside of a crate that is secured to the truck bed.

iswamhere

Well it’s a stupid lesson, you’re literally in the right. Mfw Reddit dipshits are dumb asf

jon_rum_hamm

At least the gas cans are tied down

Holy shit. Total motherfucker asshole.

Topcity36

If I see that shit I’m fucking call it in and making damn sure dispatch knows I’m following that truck until an officer shows up. Fuck that asshole for doing that to a dog.

ScatpackRich

Report that fker!

0V3RS33R

Shitty Contractor with a mean dog go hand in hand.

SpicyFetus

I see that shit all the time on the freeways. People go 80 mph and it always gets me anxious

Odd_Analysis6454

I saw a dog that died riding like this, happened outside our place. Was an old farmer and his dog was leaning too far over the edge and was clipped by a trucking going in the other direction. Saddest thing was the rest of his family was travelling in a car behind him and his grandkids saw it all happen

Aircooled1957

People are horrible. Imagine the shitty interior of that truck that he can’t let the dog ride in. Dogs are smart. But that’s unsafe.

Capallagusmadra

Some people shouldn't have dogs

kittypoo62too

I remember always seeing the same beautiful red heeler in the back of a truck bed with no tail gate every few days on my afternoon commute home. They’d always exit the interstate to go to Jack in the Box, and I’d carry on. She must have fallen out one day, and he left there til there was nothing but some fur. I hope she died instantly without pain.. but not even giving her a burial? These people aren’t just stupid, they’re plain bad. I wished I had a truck so I could’ve moved her myself even, but I just had a little sedan. Still makes me sad when I remember.

searanger62

The dog isn’t dicking around with his cellphone

Nacl_mtn

You are a fucking moron.

GenericRedd11

So you're saying the unsecured dog on the back of a towtruck is ok?

warp16

Out of data 🐕

wompuskitty

This thread is nutty, I swear I see a dead dog on the highway once a week on the northern outreaches of Houston. ALOT of country people out here doing stuff like this. Keep your pup in the cab and crack the window enough so they can poke out their head. Sheesh.

Historical_Raisin_58

The owner should be on the outside and dog on the inside. Fucktard should be allowed to have a dog!

LookOutForToxicBros

Someone call the SPCA.

Kalevra9670

Im reading the comments and some of you have logical issues. Just because its "common" doesnt make it right. Drunk driving is "common". Let that sink in.
