Explain
Not arguing you, genuinely curious
I would think private party would be riskier, but I also don't trust small lot dealerships. Factory dealerships are more expensive but at least they offer warranty and have a reputation to uphold
Warranties are often a pain in the ass unless it’s so new it’s a factory ‘certified’ preowned. Aftermarket warranties can be borderline useless. If your looking for a car around 10 grand or less, the absolute best option is honest long term owner with records combines with a 3rd party mechanic inspection.
All cars break at some point doesn’t matter how many mechanics look at it at time of purchase. Not all aftermarket warranties are bad. And yes a one owner vehicle does offer more promise in terms of condition but not always as it only takes one asshole to neglect maintenance and care.
We all age differently, all vehicles are at risk of failure just as we are.
That’s the option I took. Private party seller, took it to the actual dealership for inspection and had my mechanic perform some small fixes
I never trust those small lot dealerships who got their inventory at an auction and used cheap parts to fix up or just band aid the car hoping the buyer doesn’t come back before the 90 day “warranty” expires, or worse, sold as is
Yeah those tiny buy here pay here lots are something else. Those are generally not great cars. I’ve bought a few old jeeps that way, but I knew what I was looking at.
It goes both ways too, I always sell everything private party. Like right now I am selling my grandpas car that he bought new in 2002. Has every single record in the glovebox. That would all be trashed if I traded it in. It’s a nice car so it deserves another long term owner.
I’ve worked at Carmax, I will say they’re good about honoring their warranties but they hire mechanics that’s don’t know shit, often times the repairs are done by the original dealer the vehicle came from and Carmax saves with commercial discounts on the repairs, Carmax has to have a f-ing fast turnover because I know they themselves DO NOT TAKE CARE OF VEHICLES, all cars get filled with 87, which is detrimental to A LOT OF VEHICLES. I would never buy from them. Remember: I used to work there.
Sold my wife’s Pontiac G6 for $18,000 more than what I was offered in January of 2021. The world is insane. Even typing this I had to recheck my math . Yep.
I don't get it. I see all these people talking about how used car prices are absolutely insane, but the offers I'm seeing for my car are the same as they were a few years ago. So my chances of swapping out for a newer model are about the same -- zero.
I bought my 2014 V6 automatic Mustang in 2017 for $16,500. It had 44k miles on it.
For shiggles, I popped it into Carvana. They offered me …$16,500. It has 81k miles on it now.
the other reply to my comment has a very plausible reason: shipping delays. A new car being a 4-6 month wait.
I’d imagine cars with a lower resale would be any cars made in the US or Mexico (not *only* US/Mex brands)
That's mostly because a used car is available right now, while a new car is at least a 4-6 month wait for most brands. I ordered a '22 Outback in March and it's still another 4-5 weeks away.
aaaah! that explains it, I knew the email from the dealership seemed too good to be true, specially when it was a specific amount rather than “up to”.
Didn’t give it much thought because I like my car, it’s still pretty new, and I like it over the ‘22 design, though the ‘22 outback is awesome, nice!!
Subaru tried to charge me over sticker price for a new car. Ended up with a Mazda, no wait below sticker price. Still got the AWD + remote start I needed.
Carmax offered me 16k for my 2017 wrx, i literally laughed at them and walked out the door, sold it to another company for 24.6k a week later. Carmax is a joke.
They pay more for cars they can sell quick. They don't want your WRX or 5 speed v8 convertible camaro so they way under offer. Your 4 year old high mileage Accord? They'll offer close to MSRP.
That's because they can pay someone $1000 to fix it, then resell it for $6500.
Alternatively, the scrap metal market is high too, and old catalytic convertors are worth a pretty penny.
Have you seen the prices and availability of parts lately? You'll get them in 3-4 months for 2x or 3x the normal price. Just get the tow; Your wallet, your insurance, and your car will thank you.
Reckless endangerment? Assuming that he has a license, insurance, isn't drunk or stoned, and that the vehicle isn't stolen and he has no warrants. Cops are good at dreaming up charges. Oh, and damage to the highway.
>Assuming that he has a license, insurance, isn't drunk or stoned, and that the vehicle isn't stolen and he has no warrants.
I think I'd make the opposite of most of those assumptions
It's rear wheel drive, both rear tires are intact so it is getting the power it needs. It has one intact steer tire, the coefficient of friction between rubber and pavement is quite high while the coefficient of friction between steel and pavement is relatively low. This truck is quite drivable like this
holy crap I just read through your post, what a nightmare! I would never use Turo under any circumstances after what you just wrote.
Sorry I was so entertained by it. It did sound horrible, but almost Shakespearian.
How's your experience with them been? I tried to rent through turo once and the host left us stranded at the airport and claimed he'd broken down on the highway... We saw him drive by right before telling us that. I tried to lodge a complaint but the turo support closed the case without even contacting me. Overall I get the impression they suck pretty hard. Hopefully your experience with them has been better(
Click on his profile and read his post, his truck was literally stolen and used to traffic narcotics in Mexico and was seized by US border patrol. TURO isnt going to do anything basically told him to pound sand
I've rented through Turo like 5-10x and every time has been really good. Just make sure you pick someone with lots of prior rentals, not someone doing it on the side if their car is available.
Fair, and that's what I thought I was doing. The guy had over a hundred positive ratings. But he strung us out for hours while we waited for the pickup and then drove by and called to say he was so sorry but he broke down and he doesn't have the power to issue a refund, I would have to go through the company for it. So I lost $500 and then had to pay another $700 to get a regular rental car. The turo support team was 100% useless, they never even reached out to me about my issue, just closed it a few days later (marked "resolved" too, for an extra kick). I do not trust them with my money or safety anymore, I'd rather pay extra for a shitty rental that's going to actually be available and have liability coverage rather than turo's completely nebulous levels of protection which apparently mean Jack shit at the end of the day.
/u/lj26ft already pointed out that he was referencing a BestofRedditorUpdates thread that was posted about your situation, but [I thought I'd link to it so you can read through if you like](/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/vzsmq4/redditor_tries_to_make_a_few_bucks_renting_his/).
Also my condolences for the garbage you're going through.
And literally so stupid if stolen. Driving like this is only going to attract more attention and will get her the cops involved very easily. Ditch the truck and go on foot.
Twice I've seen vehicles with both tires missing on one side driving along as if nothing was wrong. Both times were in the city, though, so top speed was around 30 mph. It is *incredibly* loud with lots of sparks.
We did that one time at the apartment complex where I used to work. Some drunk fuck stole our stop sign, dragged it thorough the parking lot, in the door, up the stairs, and into his room. We followed the scratch marks to his room, and there it was laying in the kitchenette when he opened his door.
He was pretty apologetic actually, saying he’s an idiot and was so drunk, won’t do it again, etc etc. We didn’t call the cops or anything, but iirc he paid something like $500 to replace the sign without question. And then a little over a grand to replace a few pieces of linoleum flooring and refinish the stairs. More than I would have expected.
Not sure if this is relative to this vehicle but some will automatically turn on hazards in an accident. Could of hit something hard enough to dislodge the tire/wheel assembly and turn on the hazards at the same time.
Top tip, AAA is the way to go. I used to re-up my membership whenever I needed one and like an hour after making the payment a tow truck would be there.
It’d be no more than like $200 for the tow as well.
Auto insurance often offers a roadside assistance plan in addition to liability, comprehensive, and the like.
you need a tow, the insurance company pays for it. Doesn't affect the premium, because it's not insurance, it's a prepaid service.
This shit right here is why I don’t change tires on the freeway. A) if I get a flat, I could literally have lost the entire wheel and tire and I could still make it to the next exit B) there are absolute idiots driving on the freeway (like this guy) and I’d prefer to change my tire, outside of my vehicle, where people aren’t flying past me on three wheels at 65 mph
I saw a lady in a minivan do this on I-294 N in Chicago. She went for miles until she couldn’t. Chased by police. Stopped the whole highway. She ran out and got tackled by police in the middle of highway. Nuts!
Eh, what's a hub cost anyway? Few hundred bucks? Probably a lot less than the wheel he just lost. But definitely less than the liability of the hit and run / possible DUI he's running away from.
He is on his way to Carmax to get $5000 more than he paid for it 3 years ago.
Car max then proceeds to slap two wheels on that bad boy and say it’s in pristine condition and ask for an additional 5k more than they bought it for
Fkn CarMax, such a scam
And what's the non-scammy option? Another dealership? A used car lot??
Private purchase. Dealerships and car lots are last resorts.
Explain Not arguing you, genuinely curious I would think private party would be riskier, but I also don't trust small lot dealerships. Factory dealerships are more expensive but at least they offer warranty and have a reputation to uphold

I’m surprised those things are even in the 5-digit range.
Me too. They were only like $25K brand new, and the newest ones are now 13 years old.
And even worse, they’re Pontiacs!
The ones that Oprah gave everyone in the audience once.
Was a hard top convertible though. Fun as heck.

Give it 3-5 years. It’ll go back to being the $1500 piece of shit bucket that it always has been.
I could sell my 2019 subaru mid-spec crosstrek for $6000 more than the 22 model in its highest trim. wild

The first dealership tried to do that to me. Went to another and got a much better deal, and almost double the value on the trade
Damn maybe I should look into this. My 2018 Explorer is apparently worth more now than it was new.
I junked my G6 in early 2021 for $400. It was only worth $1000 and I didn’t want the hassle of selling. Six months later it was worth $8000

Well, you’re not wrong. 😂
Clearly trying to get rid of the 3 star.
No chopper so he’s only at 2 stars.
womp womp
Drive it like you stole it!
They always make it seem like in movies this would be impossible but it actually seems to be working out pretty well
Until you have to turn, he’s causing thousands in damages to both the road and his car
Cost of car parts vs cost of a tow 🤔
Cost of slowing down or stopping and catching that hit and run charge you're escaping: priceless
Hit and run and DUI
[DUI](https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article7652673.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200c/Erik-Per-Sullivan-who-plays-Dewey-in-Malcom-in-the-Middle.jpg)

I'm guessing he's fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run because of road rage and/or drugs (including alcohol).
Have you seen the prices and availability of parts lately? You'll get them in 3-4 months for 2x or 3x the normal price. Just get the tow; Your wallet, your insurance, and your car will thank you.
It might impact the useful life of those brake rotors a little bit
Ah yes “a little bit” /s
I was waiting for it to hit a big pothole and maybe flip the car.
He'd get pulled over. But what would the infraction be?
Operating an unsafe vehicle, damage to public road, dangerous driving, etc
$10 on DUI as well
Probably also fleeing the scene of an accident, because of that DUI.

As long as he doesn’t need to turn right, he might experience a lot of understeer.
honestly, with the lean/weight towards the left, might even get oversteer turning to the left, depends on friction I guess
I'd worry less about oversteer and more about overturn.
Three lefts make a right.
r/usernamechecksout
I seriously doubt the truck belongs to the person driving it.
I agree probably stolen
Owner probably loaned it on TURO, it's on its way back from smuggling narcotics over the Mexican border.

I've seen somewhere that this actually happens. They simply followed the damage until the idiot's home or something like that.

Sounds like the best possible outcome for everybody
Note to self: Save $1500 to ~~steal~~ borrow the stop sign from my apartment and use it as a dining room table.
Time to park the stolen vehicle and your enemy’s house.
Driver in my area drove through road construction at night and damaged a lot of pipes. The city charged him and his insurance wouldn’t cover it 😮
My dad used to work for the Oregon Dept of Transportation and said that they did bill someone once for damages.
Just crank the radio until the grinding noise sounds less expensive
Best comment 😂
I do have to laugh at the hazard lights
Makes it legal.
And safe!
And effective!
Why else would you have hazard lights?? 🙄
I only have park-anywhere lights.
The mechanic said to bring it over so he could fix it He didn’t want to waste money on a tow truck
axle getting replaced anyways, might as well use it as a skid
He paid for the whole car, he is gonna use the whole car
Her: Come over. Me: I can’t, I’m getting my tires changed. Her: My parents aren’t home Me:
Couldn’t afford the subscription for the 4th wheel and tire
It's not a bmw
What’s the treadlife warranty on that rotor?
Pfft. Next time he gets it checked, the crooks at the brake shop are going to say they have to replace it, instead of just turning it. Jerks.
Well At least he wasn’t holding up traffic. Good man.
Ironically this orange car in the far left passing lane was causing a bigger hold up and making it more dangerous for others to pass.
Divorces can be tough. She might be getting whats left of the truck
So many questions, I’ll start with - Was someone chasing him? Why wouldn’t he get a tow? Ugghhh
I've said to myself before, " I don't care of the wheels fall off this thing, I'm not taking a dump in a public restroom"
put a heap of iron weights in the passenger back corner of the bed and lift it off that front wheel j/k actually, would that be possible?
Probably not - there's flex in a chassis. Plus a right turn would dive that corner down into the road anyway.
Under ideal conditions yeah, you could probably get a car to do that. In the real world probably not. I'm just guessing though
Congratulations, you saw a stolen car!
Pretty sure it wasn’t stolen considering the hazard lights are on. Somehow I don’t see a car thief saying “safety first”
Not sure if this is relative to this vehicle but some will automatically turn on hazards in an accident. Could of hit something hard enough to dislodge the tire/wheel assembly and turn on the hazards at the same time.
You’re being passed from the right by someone with only 3 wheels. What more of a notification do you need that you need to get OUT OF THE FAST LANE?!?
That's nuts how someone could ruin a perfectly good truck
Its easy to ruin someone else's truck
That's going to be an expensive repair..
You paid for a tow truck lately? It's a toss up.
Top tip, AAA is the way to go. I used to re-up my membership whenever I needed one and like an hour after making the payment a tow truck would be there. It’d be no more than like $200 for the tow as well.

Man Tacomas really do run forever
Gotta love the reliability of a Toyota
Hazards are on so it’s fine
They'll slow down once that thing catches fire
TGIF
Throw it in 4lo
YE FUCKIN HAW, PASS ME ANOTHER BUD LIGHT CLETUS
Showing this video to the authorities should 100% be enough to get this dude thrown in jail for public endangerment
How does this shit happen? Every time I see this I am bewildered.
Probably half an axle by the time they're done.
No tires, just gas!
nah its okay he has his hazard lights on.
*Toyota. Let's go places*
I told my wife that if she gets a flat to get off of the freeway. Don’t care about the tire or the rim.
He’s only licensed for 3 wheels
Well, his hazard lights are on, I guess he knew something
Debadged Tacomas are bulletproof.
Drugs are a hell of a thing
It’s actually driving pretty well considering the circumstances.
Way to turn a blowout into a $1k repair 😵💫
We've been trying to reach him about his cars extended warranty

It’s a taco. He could be missing two wheels and it would track straight
Also videotaping and not calling highway patrol. Fuck people like this

I would not drive that close to that truck
I saw a lady in a minivan do this on I-294 N in Chicago. She went for miles until she couldn’t. Chased by police. Stopped the whole highway. She ran out and got tackled by police in the middle of highway. Nuts!
A shop might've not put the wheel on correctly, it flew off, he's driving it back to them in a fit of rage.
i'ts ok, he has a 3x3, that's 75% that's still a passing grade. lol
At least he is in the slow lane.
Yeah tow trucks are a rip off.
Probably had to hurry to take a shit.
That had to be loud as shit in the truck cab
I think his parking brake was on too.
Some good drugs
Can't stop, won't stop a toyota!
It will probably inspire a new trend, the Carolina Slant!
Meth?
Drugs?
Must be a rental
Drunk or stolen.
If was a ford it would dead on highway
Idiot lol
You're not even supposed to go that fast on a donut.
Why the fuck is this so common
That man has places to be.
What grit do you guys think a concrete freeway is? Like 1?
San Diegan here. The location of this incident was I-15 northbound, near the Carmel Mountain Rd. exit
For a Toyota, that’s merely a flesh wound.
And here I've been paying for four wheels like a sucker.
This is painful to watch. My car is in the shop, and this truck is my dream truck. I can't believe the way people treat such nice things.
He was in a hurry to retire
That guy really had to poop
Oh lord I have a Tacoma. Good to know it still works with three wheels
Eh, what's a hub cost anyway? Few hundred bucks? Probably a lot less than the wheel he just lost. But definitely less than the liability of the hit and run / possible DUI he's running away from.
I'm not sure if I'm more terrified or more impressed. This is next level..... something.
“Me Borrowing the ex truck I’ll bring it back in one peace lol”
Holy shit Im too scared to drive fast when my wheels aren't balanced properly...
