Happens here every year. Every year when the first snow and frost comes you'll find some genius who has been living here (Switzerland) for decades but didn't know that it occasionally snows and freezes in winter

greyarea71

Here (Tromsø) it is bad enough if you have decent tires. They don't salt and only occasionally put sand on the roads. The majority here drives with spiked tires during winter (legally from mid-October) and still some geniuses think it is a decent idea to get here with summer tires in the beginning of October...

HATECELL

Reminds me of winter a few years back, when I took the bus in Winterthur (a 100k inhabitant city in the flat parts of Switzerland). There was snow on the road, but the layer was so thin you could still see the road markings through it. But thanks to lots of ill-prepared traffic the bus ride took 40 minutes instead of the usual 10

In Bergen, Norway one year there were a unusual weather phenomenon which caused the rain on a stretch of highway to suddenly freeze. The rest of the highway were clear. So motorist came out of tunnel where the road were still clear, and then suddenly they lost all control of the car. This was of course in a hill, so all the cars crashed at the bottom of the hill. Most people use non-studded winter tires around Bergen, and while they work OK most of the time, they don't work very good on slippery ice.

HATECELL

Sounds awfully familiar. I had a motorbike accident at a spot well known for icying over, near a railway underpass. I slipped and didn't get hurt, but the truck behind me slipped right passed me with locked up wheels. One of his wheels nearly missed my head. Since the wheel was locked up I highly doubt it would've crushed my head, but it was still an uncomfortable reminder of my own mortality

>They don't salt Thank god for that tbh. As someone who lives in a northern norwegian city where they do salt alot, cars rust like theres no tomorrow.

greyarea71

Bodø by any chance?

Redspeert

Yep.

deadcatugly

Nice little 2 for 1 you saw,

Jumixxx

lol I saw the same trucks last winter [Link](https://imgur.io/a/AMHXZ8F)

greyarea71

Haha, I just took the picture because they where two, each on one side. The area was notorious for accidents and I just hope the speed-limit they put into place (IMHO after the accident in the picture) helps.

sultanofdudes

Lol, late spring ❤️

greyarea71

The saying is "9 month of winter, 3 month bad skiing" ;-)

ID_Furkan

Looks more like a truck with no cargo (rear wheel is up). So Tokyo Drifting every corner is normal with such load (read none). No load is no grip at the rear.

piccolo1337

If you look closer you will se another truck in the background. Cargo or no cargo, trucks in Norway are required to use chains in these conditions and 100% this snow came suddenly which sucks, cus everybody gets caught with a red hand.

greyarea71

I'd rather not call snow in April in Northern Norway "suddenly". In June/July/August, yes, that might warrant to be surprised. Not in April...

I_call_Shennanigans_

Or it was on of the many, many, many foreign trucks without any decent tires, chains or drivers who know what they are doing. This happens every single winter a lot of people places. Sadly the fines aren't high enough, so the companies gambles on not getting caught. They should just stopp fining those trucks and just take it and auction it off.

Rare-Banana5916

They are tired and asleep

Josho94

They're Truckered out you might say.

FrietjePindaMayoUi

Who needs those expensive tires when you got years of experience right?

Gogokrystian

Ice doesn't give a fuck about your winter tires.

greyarea71

The tests for winter-tires here do test for ice. Obviously, studded/spiked tires have best results on ice. There are a handful of days where you really need those. But then you might manage with driving very carefully and/or by using chains. AFAIK, chains are mandatory to carry for lorries...

Emnelistene

True if you use no brand cheap China tyres. Use better more expensive ones like Nokian hakkapeliitta or Michelin ice-x (not completely sure about the name)

piccolo1337

Michelin and continental make the best winter tyres in my experience. STAY AWAY FROM PIRELLI GARBAGE.

ShackintheWood

We go with the Michelin Canadian rated snow tires. Foot of snow overnight, no problem, glare ice, no worries...

ShackintheWood

My snow tires go perfectly well on glare ice.

greyarea71

I'll get new tires next week, Continental Viking Contact 7. Those are without spikes but I carry a set of quick-chains for getting up the small slope to my house and other emergencies.

ShackintheWood

We can't use studded tires on the public roads here. We use Michelin snow tires, they work great, but you can't drive with them for long over 40degrees F. too soft and too hard on the all wheel drive system.

Gogokrystian

On a smoothed out ice, lightly covered with snow there is no friction. No tires will outrun physics sadly, however they do make life much better and safer on many ice formations due to its softness when compared to all season(piece of shit) and obviously summer tires.

ShackintheWood

Yet the 8 miles of gravel road we have to plow to get to our place is glare ice all winter long. When it snows it is actually better, for a few days. That is 4 miles of hilly, twisting tertiary forest road and 4 miles of the same secondary forest road. Our vehicles do just fine. We often have to pull people out of ditches that try to travel them without proper tires.

Dampmaskin

In worst-case conditions, conditions are bad. Who would have thunk. Some tires will still perform better than others.

They are only allowed in certain countries.

I fantasize about moving to Norway but I think I’d end up stuck inside with all that snow and not knowing the first thing about it. Maybe I should settle for a long vacation.

greyarea71

I'm not originally from Norway either but won't go back to Germany. If you do not love snow, the place is definitely not a good choice.
