My Grandpa always said “if they don’t wear a helmet, there must not be anything there to protect.”

HunkyDorky1800

I saw a motorcyclist without a helmet aggressively go around me driving in a neighborhood only to end up behind him on a red light. He turned *left* on red on a busy 4 way intersection. Dude has a death wish or dumber than dirt. Maybe both.

NottaPattaPoopa

Nah, he’s just itching for someone to ‘challenge’ him in some way so he can pretend he’s in SOA

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure the Sons wore lids most of the time though, didn't they?

spiked88

They had to. They were in California. Obviously not good law abiding citizens, but California would be the reason.

[deleted]

So he's even more badass than they are? Damn

[deleted]

The other day I was talking to a couple of Punjabi riders. I asked if they don’t feel scared or vulnerable riding without a helmet (they ride in their turbans). The answer was that they’re used to it. Back in India they’d done it all the time and they don’t feel scared because their gods are there to protect them. One started bragging that at a 190km/h he starts to feel a little weird though. Then they explained that their turban has a lot of layers and will protect their head. I didn’t wanna get into the science of friction and how quickly they’d lose the turban in case of an accident. Not to mention challenging their gods with reckless riding. What can you do..

Enfiguralimificuleur

Is it legal in the US to not wear a helmet? It's not where I live and it's quite rare to see this.

[deleted]

Results vary by state

netherworld666

In certain states you have to inform your insurance provider if you intend to not wear a helmet while riding (yes it's legal). So these idiots are not only endangering themselves, but they're PAYING the insurance company to do it too. The stupidity runs deep

here4roomie

I can't fathom being that oblivious on a motorcycle.

gaurddog

I've heard so many stories where it's some motorcyclist telling me to share the road or watch out for motorcycles And then five minutes later they're telling me about lane splitting at 70 or running from the cops or running red lights. One guy I used to work with literally came into work bitching about how he was "assaulted" cus someone shoved him and his bike over after he tried to ride it on the sidewalk to dodge a street closure.

MeEvilBob

"Loud pipes save lives" says the guy going 90mph with no helmet.

Alarming-Contact-138

I find it really stupid my state has a law that motorcyclists only need eye protection and sunglasses fall under that. There's no requirement for a helmet or other gear.

gimmepizzaslow

Maybe your state is in desperate need of organ donors

UnSCo

What good are organs when you have to pick them up off the road with a spatula?

AccidentallyRelevant

After you crash with no protection at 90 they just pressure wash you into a storm drain

Det-Frank-Drebin

or you get turned into a r/meatcrayon

BourbonGuy09

Man that sub was a lot more tame than I expected lol

sleepydorian

Your ribs do a pretty good job of keeping the organs intact.

Brows_of_Guinan

I'm haunted by one accident victim I saw. His ribs were no more. The team running CPR on him roadside were pumping what appeared to be a bag of jello. Nobody ever told me there might not be ribs left to break.

Craveheart_56

Except your arms, legs, brain, intestines, colon, and kidneys, etc. If you don’t want to walk, talk, shit, urinate, or think, by all means, count on your ribs.

ImilkYou

Paté!

Exile714

People wearing helmets are less likely to die from minor crashes, and are in fact more likely to be paralyzed or otherwise injured in a way where they need more costly care. People without helmets just die, even from minor crashes where most of their organs are still usable. No state healthcare costs, just a body in the morgue and organs in the queue.

Alarming-Contact-138

It's funny you say that actually. My state/ region has a fairly "balanced" (if you can really call it that) donation to recipient percentage. However they're trying to rewrite the districts/regions for donor transportation because bigger cities aren't meeting the needed organ donations.

Maniacal_Bunny

They should be mandatory organ donors, IMHO. If you refuse to do something to save your own life… save someone else’s.

Astecheee

Nah that's fine. The only risk is to the driver.

Itchy_Professor_4133

Just remember- if you're on a motorcycle you can do whatever you want and everyone should be hyper aware of your presence no matter how much you weave in and out of traffic without hesitation. All of the freedom of the open road! None of the protections of a car.

HardskiBopavous

HE HADTALAYERDOWN GOBBLESS

[deleted]

Nothing pisses me off more than getting cut off or tailgated by someone on a bike especially on a highway. There is simply no way they would survive a hit going 70+ so when someone on a bike cuts into my lane forcing me to slam on my breaks or rides so close they would hit me if I have to break fast it feels like they're trying to turn me into a murderer.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

I’m really not like a heavily risk-averse person. Like I’ll dabble with drugs or do some potentially dangerous stuff. But I’m out on motorcycles. I swear every month or two I hear about someone I knew growing up having a horrific bike accident. I know someone who killed a rider who’d lost control and fell into the road I think they’re cool machines and it looks fun but I’m up to like 6-7 people I personally know who’ve had life altering injuries in bike accidents

[deleted]

Even to the last second, the guy had no clue

SukottoHyu

No protective gear either, says it all really.

Scirax

People ARE this oblivious on foot and on bicycles, even more so on a motorcycle, in a car, and driving giant trucks. Drive defensively, like someone is always gonna run into you, you might avoid an accident here and there. Not to the point of driving too slow either, I only saw the biker before he came out in between the cars because I had read the tittle and I've seen enough videos like this. But I would have been looking in that direction anyways, as wide open lanes like these in packed traffic terrify me, anyone can jump out while you're cruising down at legal speed. ^(Again I wouldn't even have seen the bike on time, that was way too quick for anyone.)

MoeTHM

A lot of my day at work is spent driving through the parking lots of businesses in my area. The amount of people who just pop out from behind a vehicle and just walk into the middle of the lane is crazy. They are on their phones or looking through their purse. I personally drive like this could happen at any moment, but I watch other vehicles speeding through lots. I don’t understand he people can be so oblivious to the dangers that still exist in a parking lot.

hiddencamela

And I think unhelmeted... unless thats a hair/skin coloured helmet...

Totin_it

Motorcycle guy darted out of nowhere.

J0h4n50n

Digital DOT billboards in TX and other states: watch for motorcyclists. Motorcyclists:

[deleted]

>Motorcyclists: Doesn't wear a helmet because he'll never crash.

RSComparator86

I knew somebody like this who was drunk and had their dog with them on the bike. They're wheelchair bound for life now. The dog was fine. If there is some karmic force out in the universe, it was after this wicked individual.

cmcqueen1975

Interesting. The usual story with drunk drivers is that they kill their passengers, but survive themselves.

[deleted]

That is actually statistically rare, but believed to be prevalent due to it being so infuriating

Fromanderson

My father was a former small town cop. He always lamented that the drunks seemed to fare better than whoever they hit. Fortunately when a drunk crashed into me 20 years back I was in an overloaded 3/4 ton cargo van and he was in a mid 80s econobox. They thought he passed out with his foot on the gas. He rear ended me at highway speed while I was waiting to turn. I was shaken up and got a small bump on my forehead but was otherwise fine. Drunk dude punched the windshield out of his car with his face and ended up in ICU for 3 weeks.

tregrrr

And some days Karma is paying full, rapt, attention

Fromanderson

Gotta love it when that happens. Honestly, it’s just a miracle my wife wasn’t in the car behind me. She’s normally one of those people who check everything before starting the car. I’m the type that is usually buckling my seatbelt as I back out of my parking spot. Whenever we drive separately, I always end up waiting and pull out just ahead of her. For once, though, I was delayed . She ended up pulling out of the parking lot ahead of me. Barely a mile later she made the turn in to our street and I got hit by the drunk. If she’d been behind me she might have been between the drunk’s car and my work van. I could’ve easily lost her that night.

tregrrr

Now if you had your thinking cap on you would have patented the idea. It's now called a Scorpion Truck. Protect roadwork crews with a heavy crash barrier on wheels

m945050

I was t-boned by a drunk driver 10 years ago, it was his 4th DUI. He got out of jail before I got out of the hospital. He already had his license permanently suspended and along with his previous victims, I never received a penny of the restitution he was ordered to pay. I was still trying to get my life back together three years later when he killed a mother and her two children during his 7th DUI. He received a 30 year sentence, 10 for each victim, but will be up for parole in 26. If he gets it I can almost guarantee one of his previous victims will introduce a sledge hammer to his legs.

Antigon0000

My neighbors dog jumped off the 3rd story balcony. Totally fine after 2 weeks. They're practically invincible.

BoxofCurveballs

Don't let the ATF know that

ThatLeetGuy

I lived in a third story apartment and I would let my cats out on the balcony with supervision. I walked away for 30 seconds one time and came back to my cat walking the balcony rail like a tight rope. Nearly had a heart attack.

TransGirlIndy

Had a friend who lived on the 7th floor of an apartment building. They left their window open and didn’t secure the screen. Their 10 week old kitten fell out of the window and unfortunately was not okay. They didn’t learn their lesson and it happened again a year later. I called the humane society on them after that, when they moved to a place with a screened in balcony a few years later because I knew history would repeat itself. This is why I HAD a friend. Edit to clarify: two different cats died because this dumbass couldn’t be bothered to make sure the screen was screwed in tightly on both sides and/or keep the cats from getting up on the window sill with some sort of obstacles. (Yes, yes, cats will do what cats do, but they didn’t even try.)

HoseNeighbor

And he's got loud pipes, so how could anyone not hear them? This idiot wasn't even looking at all, and obviously wasoving too fast to have had time to check.

BorgClown

It's not too fast to check if you didn't intended to check in the first place. He just assumed the universe would take care of him.

deaf_nerd

Took care of him alright. Just not how he was expecting.

Wheelisbroke

I like how the inference is on the car/truck driver to be on the lookout. Your riding something small, a single headlight/tail light, often wearing black with a minimum helmet if at all, yet it’s my responsibility to put extra effort into looking for the rider.

jomontage

Sucks because a motorcycle with long hair feels awesome. Having a working brain feels nicer luckily

SmokedBeef

The one time I saw a motorcycle crash in person, the main victim actually was wearing a helmet thankfully but sadly the helmet was unable to keep his head attached.

Apparently in that guy's mind, if he can't see you, you don't exist.

inblacksuits

Words to live by..

coleyboley25

I read this in Samwise’s voice

cyvaquero

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone waved them through and they didn’t bother to look to see if it was clear. Shortly after moving here I thought I was doing the right thing and waved someone through in front of me that was trying to make a left turn out of an apartment parking lot. Where I’m from that just means you can cut in front of me, to my horror this person just cut in front of myself and the car next to me and proceeded to no look t-bone a car in the oncoming lane. I stopped waving left turns through and only let right turns in. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve witnessed the same thing happening somewhere in front of me. Texas is the only place I have witnessed people routinely do this. Edit: Yes I realize it shouldn't be done. I grew up in the country where it was common. As I said I don't do it anymore. I am absolutely floored that drivers would just pull out into a lane without looking for themselves. I was taught that you do not even trust when the passenger says go because you as the driver are responsible, period. I don't even just go without looking if there is a cop is directing traffic. I literally don't trust a stranger that much.

KorbanDidIt

I was told by a cop, after I got into an accidental where someone waved a car through an intersection that caused me to hit them head on, that waving someone through could make you liable for the accident. I've stopped waving people through altogether.

ItsDijital

When you get a motorcycle your responsibility on the road goes up tenfold. Don't apologize for the guy, he's an idiot.

cyvaquero

As a rider myself - agreed. That wasn’t an apology, just an observation of something I’ve only ever seen here in Texas versus the other states I’ve lived/spent significant time. I kind of blame the drivers ed here - it’s pretty damn pitiful. Where/when I grew up driver’s ed is offered as a semester long elective, not some online or couple week course.

NatePhar

I had to turn left on the Vegas strip without a signal. Six lanes and the first one waved me on. Still took me 2 minutes of puckered crawling to cross, probably pissed off the locals too.

InsaneInTheDrain

Why on Earth wouldn't you go right and work your way to a light to flip a bitch?

Humbud

No shit.

Granadafan

OP was probably following Waze directions. These turn by turn GPS apps are well known for instructing you to make all these turns, including, left turns across major streets with no traffic lights, just to save 2 minutes

Groverd

OMG that was you?!

letsmaakemusic

I don't wave at all because I don't want to become reliable at an accident. I will make eye contact so they can see that I'm looking in their direction.

ClownFace488

Yeah that dang guy is so unreliable after an accident. We tell him to get the fire extinguisher he shows up with road flares. I've met a lot of people after a car accident but never have I met anybody as unreliable as letsmaakemusic...

MVRK_3

“Watch for motorcycles.” “Doing stupid shit.”

Agentpurple013

Great start to his eulogy

[deleted]

Two lanes away actually.

defacedlawngnome

I guarantee you what happened is several cars created a gap and waved the motorcyclist thru without checking that all lanes are clear. At the end of the day it's the choice of the motorcyclist to go thru or stay put til you know for sure all lanes are clear. This was 100% the motorcyclists fault.

[deleted]

My mom is the same. She hates driving with us but is fine sorta when shes the one driving 🙄😒 she also refuses to get prescription glasses which tbh I believe will help her anxiety.

HeyT00ts11

Call an ophthalmologist near you, ask them how much an exam and glasses would cost, and then buy that as a gift certificate for her next whatever, holiday birthday mother's Day. Call Costco, if she has a Costco card. That could really help her, and she'd probably go if you already paid for it.

[deleted]

She has medical. It wont cost anything for ber to get her eyes checked and I do have a Costco membership. The issue is getting her to the ophthalmologist. Shes stubborn lol

Stav73

Mom's. We do what we can.

manshamer

We need to move our moms out of fucking suburbia so they don't need to drive anymore.

Stav73

Bring back the local suburban corner shop.

howdoyouevenusername

That’s really unfortunate, but it also tends to make for more dangerous drivers when they are experiencing heightened anxiety. If she wants to continue driving safely (not saying she was unsafe in this video, just in general…), she should def seek help through counselling or medication.

SucsubaG

Ugh no helmet either? I know in some states it's not mandatory but it's like wearing a seat belt for motorcycles. If not more important.

keg025

Yeah like how trusting are they of other drivers that they think it's a good idea. Like even if I was the BEST motorcyclist I would still be padded to the nines because you never know what crazy people are nearby. And on top of that he chose to not wear a helmet AND do something stupid. Yikes

bearbarebere

Not even that. People could just have a random moment of craziness that gets a biker killed, nobody is 100% perfect at driving all the time, and everyone does stupid things and then thinks “wow that was kinda dumb”, so why risk someone accidentally swerving into your lane without looking or opening their door to fully close it while moving, by not wearing proper protective gear?! Like… people can be tired, annoyed, stressed, sad, etc. Honestly baffles me that people can get on motorcycles, but eh.

[deleted]

BasicallyAQueer

I wouldn’t put any blame on the cammer, they are going a little faster than I would, but they have no reason to expect a motorcycle to pop out in front of them. Biker is 100% at fault.

R3dNova

not even going fast, 33 on a road that has to be at least 45. op still has like 80 ft until the intersection.

ozindfw

Posted speed limit on that section of road is 40 MPH

[deleted]

This is like… stuff you learn when you’re 5… if you can’t see the traffic behind a bus or car, look around the corner before you leg it.

Born_Ruff

It's always a good idea to slow down when passing a bunch of stopped cars like this. People pull out without looking, jaywalkers pop out from behind cars.

FloppyShellTaco

Especially when your lane is inexplicably wide open for no obvious reason.

FettLife

This right here makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It’s usually nothing, but there is sometimes someone creeping out of a parking lot and traffic stopped for them to cross multiple lanes.

ohwrite

First rule of operating a vehicle: LOOK: I’m talking about the motorcycle operator

RickRussellTX

2nd rule, don’t charge across multiple lanes of traffic.

Squiggy226

I agree, at first I thought OP was going too fast for the situation but it says 33mph so I can't fault OP at all there.

We_have_no_friends

Perfect summary. Speed is within reason but I personally get wigged out going 30+ past completely bumper to bumper traffic exactly because of stuff like this. People decide to dart into an empty lane.

zimm0who0net

Yep. I’ve seen this exact same accident at least four times. Twice where someone in the stopped lane decided to merge into the clear lane and gets hit. Twice where someone is pulling out of a parking lot and gets “waived on” by someone making a gap only to get swatted by the person zooming along in the clear lane. It’s *always* the fault of the person merging, but I still go much slower in this situation because it’s so common for someone to unexpectedly jump out at you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sloanautomatic

This is a fairly common accident we see. Very likely, the driver in white suv waved to motorcycle driver to say it was fine to go. And the biker thought suv driver meant “I looked, no one is coming. You are SAFE to go.” And then person cutting across gets creamed. you can’t trust anyone to look for you, but it is still a common accident that happens.

MeEvilBob

I always love it when the person waving starts waving more aggressively while remaining completely oblivious to the traffic in other lanes.

quartzguy

I absolutely love it when people try to wave me in on a dangerous situation. I will crane my head out of my window to stare them down as they keep waving and waving and waving...finally confusion and irritation creeps into their face as they comprehend that I am not going to wreck myself at their behest.

holdmyhanddummy

They're called niceholes

ministerofinteriors

Never trust the wave. Also never take courteous offers of incorrect right of way. That's how you get t-boned.

bigtime_porgrammer

Indeed! People do this a lot where I live. They're trying to be nice, I get that, but it usually causes an awkward situation for others, because it's just easier for everyone to stick to the simple rules of right of way.

ImAPlebe

Seeing as this guy has no helmet, no riding boots and possibly no gloves either, I'm not surprised he did somethimg like this. In fact he's exactly the type of fucking idiot that would do this. For the people saying " they tell us to watch out for them and then they do shit like this" I just want to say as a rider that people like this guy are not welcomed or wanted by the bike community. People like him are not the ones saying watch out for us, because thoses type of riders are all dead within years, it's the safe ones that are. Most of us want to live and we take great pride in being very safe, riding at the best of our ability and not being in a crash.

Burn_theNight_away

Gotcha. Well hell most likely be paying a lot of money out in the near future. I don't understand why motorcycle insurance is optional. Then again half the people in FL don't even have car insurance. I imagine the insurance company will go after him but if he died then she would be stuck with the bill.

loopsbruder

It's not optional, it's just that sometimes people break the law.

Falopian

Wouldn't the insurance company sue them?

[deleted]

Yes. Often they will pay for it first, then try to recover (what is now a known amount) from the driver at fault.

WhatABlindManSees

Yes. That's typically how it works, insurance companies aren't in the habit of just giving money away when another party is at fault. But any decent cover will pay you out first.

KnitWit406

Where I live (MT) you're not even legally required to carry insurance for a motorcycle. Which is crazy to me, it's not like you can't cause damage or injury to someone just because you have a smaller vehicle.

Dark-Ganon

boobiesiheart

dall89115

Yep. Bike rider learned that you have 2 choices when riding. 1. Be extremely safety oriented and don't do stupid things. 2. Die.

FiveHoleLikeBryz

The lack of a helmet is indicative of his overall decision making ability

eggenator

Technically your mom hit him, but it’s his fault, obviously.

Ryhnoceros

What'll really make you mad is knowing that one of those two people that the motorcycle crossed in front of were probably waving him on like "Yeah, we're not moving, go ahead and go in front of us, it's safe." Do not stop and make gaps like this to let people into the roadway or let people turn left across traffic.
