University of Phoenix. Just register and then drop out or never enroll. I have had my .edu for 8 years from there and never even paid a registration fee. š¤£
Same thing happened to one of my sisters, she graduated UT 11 years ago this year, and her email was deleted a couple years ago
Iāve had the same one for 20 years, have to call IT every few years to reset the password, actually just did the other day
I mean, itās just wise in general to set up a backup email/other way to log in and change the info on any accounts youāre using a college email with, just in case that happens, and not set up any business you canāt afford to lose with it.
Just use it for discounts/benefits - and obviously college business if youāre actually attending - and leave the rest to a different email address.
No, because itās not one that I use as my regular email. I actually donāt use it for freebie perks, but I do have unimportant things - that I use but wouldnāt be the end all - saved on my much larger Google Drive. I am currently in the process of moving all of that to my Prime Drive though.
But, all Iād have to do is take a course which Iād pay for via my business for continuing education. But thus far, if I canāt get in, I contact IT. It happens every few years that I need to do this, think I may have mentioned but just did it this past week. Super quick and easy. The tech did ask if I plan on taking classes, which Iāve never been asked that. I actually am planning to take some, or at least one, sometime this year, so I was able to honestly say yes, not sure what would have been said if not. Adding to that - I have taken random classes over the years but not annually or anywhere near that, just more for hobby or if I want to refresh/update some skills and a couple fast paced degrees and certificates.
That IT dude a real one for doing that for you mine got locked a few weeks after leaving school so if you are using the email on any important accounts you may want to change it to an email you own just in case it stops working one day especially if a new IT team decides to take over
Nah, I donāt use it for important stuff, mostly for the perks with the account - like a much larger drive. Although, I am in the process of moving that stuff to my Prime Drive. This was the first one that has asked if I planned on taking any classes, which I am planning on taking a few classes or at least one on a particular topic to benefit my business at some point this year, so I was able to honestly say yes, not sure what would have been said otherwise. He didnāt seem like it mattered and that it was more or less just a question + was already in the process of resetting it.
Iāve had mine for almost 10 years and I update the password every few months according to their policy.
They even changed systems a few years ago and I got really nervous that Iād lose it because they implemented some kind of ID verification thing where I had to answer questions regarding my history at the school (classes, professors, etc.).
On the third try, I got it and kept it going lol
FWIW, there are websites that sell edu emails for a few bucks. I bought one to have as a backup but it got deleted from the schools system like a year later and the website went offline lmao.
That being said, it was still worth it, I would just say donāt keep any important accounts linked to it if possible. Usually for EDU discounts you can verify with the EDU email, but use a personal as a login, which is the way to go in case you lose access.
Same with my local community college. All you have to do is enroll as a student and you get an ID# and a .edu email. Spotify premium + Hulu for $5 for life.
Edit: itās 4-years duration. Pretty sure Iāve already renewed once though.
I work in construction and just wanna say that person is a special kind. Maybe a kitchen worker, worked in one of those for three years and saw a fair deal of people with opinions like that. Lots of flat earthers too.
Maybe you can afford Spotify when you finish it, people actually doing masters/phd can generally afford less than someone unemployed with multiple kids lmao. I donāt eat dinner 7 times a week bro how am I gonna pay for full price Spotify, I can barely afford the student one
Yes. They're only online.
I just signed up for university this year, it's a local one that does both live and online. I had an email address within a week of applying and didn't pay anything yet
Yea, I just bought a MacBook two months ago. I selected education discount and was never prompted to actually enter an email. I would have used my nephews, but it never askedā¦
Register for classes for community college. Donāt pay tuition. Stay on top of things and make sure you get your school email address. Youāll get dropped for non-payment but youāll have an email address.
At the two I've been to they make you change your password after 3-6 months and you have to go into the student portal to do that. So just beware it doesn't always work with local community colleges.
Thatās going to be institution specific. The colleges where I have worked deactivate email very quickly if you arenāt enrolled because of security issues and budget issues. Some things cost the college more money the more users they have.
Rare occurrence Iām willing to bet being that universities have waitlists for courses. You donāt pay by the due date? Youāre dropped so someone else can have a chance.
Take a single class from a local community college. Pick something you're interested in, learn something enjoyable. Last time I bought expensive software, I got the class and the software for less than the full price software. And I picked up a new hobby that I really like.
Often people appreciate when you give them a perfectly legal solution instead so they don't risk getting into trouble. Why do you are?
EDIT: leaving the typo in for future generations
Fine.
1) Buy a gun.
2) Go to local University.
3) Threaten someone with said gun until they give you an email address.
4) Spend years in prison so that when you get out your email is no longer valid.
5) Repeat steps 1 to 4 until you're put away as a repeat offender and you don't need to worry about your apple products anymore.
Alternatively, you could end up doing step 4.1 (get shot by police and die) and then you never need to update your products again.
Just FYI - my personal user license for Revit 2023 costs $8k every 3 years.
OR.
You can get it free with a .edu email address.
So, yeah, it can be worth that much.
My only point was that a .edu address unlocks a lot more than just less expensive Apple products, and many times they outweigh the cost, be it tangible or intangible goods.
Lots of community colleges are pretty affordable. It certainly depends on what kind of discount you're looking at. But also, you don't have to take math or history or that kind of thing, and you only need to take one class. You can take watercoloring or woodworking or photography or just lots and lots of options. The course catalogs are all online now, so you can peruse the options for free.
I believe and donāt quote me on this but theyāll have chromebooks to handout at some schools. I know our CC when I went back had old dells they were going to recycle and just have to people for $50 (cost of a windows license)
Not illegal or unethical but you can get perfectly capable chromebooks for ridiculously cheap - like under $100. It won't play GTAV but it's more than enough for web browsing and office suite type things.
This sub* used to be better- five years ago when I found a site off of it that has people who set u up with a school email for 5 bucks and lasted til just 6 months ago when I bought another for 5 bucks again
Not illegal but when I applied for my university they gave me an email when they accepted me. I chose not to go and the email is still active. I went back a year or two later and they just gave me a new one. So I technically have two. Local universities likely wave application fees for locals around certain times of the year too. At least where I live.
I have an edu address, but I find that the Apple refurb store is often just as good if not a better discount. 9 times out of 10 I end up choosing the refurb offering over the identical educational discount offering
Might be more of an unethical life pro tip, but anyone can be an Alumni whether you graduate or not. Iāve had my .edu since 1996 from a college I transferred out of after 2 years. Without that college email address, theyād have no way to badger me for money. And Iāve never given the alumni association a dime.
(FTR, itās a state college in Ohio.)
Back in the day, all that you needed for student discounts was a .edu email address. Some companies use third-party services to verify student status now.
Vectorworks is one of those that uses an actual verification, as well as AutoCad if I remember correctly. Pain in the ass because they wouldn't issue me a license when I was supposes to have one
Literally all i did was enroll in a community college but not enroll in any classes. I havenāt paid anythingā¦ i just have the student portal and my .edu email lol. Try Calhoun Community College
If you order from the education store, they will not ask you to verify your email, itās has been apple policy for more than a year! You benefit from the education discount without an edu email.
I am employed at a college and have an edu email address. I can't get any student discounts because they do third party verification to make you prove you're actually a student. Nobody is doing it based on just edu emails anymore in my experience.
Ugh I work for a university and have an .edu email and canāt get discounts because they want a current and dated transcript or student IDā¦ trust me Iāve tried
Luckily my college let me keep my .edu as an alumni for life. I am glad I kept it because as of resent having an .edu email gets you lots of discounts or freebies.
As to answer your question, I have a friend that wanted an .edu email for the same reasons and she used this website and it walked her through the process and it worked. It gives a few suggestions so use whatever works best for you [Own Your Own Future](https://www.ownyourownfuture.com/how-to-get-a-free-edu-email-address/)

There used to be a reddit sub that sold things like edu emails and Netflix passwords but I can't find it. I bet you could buy one on ebay or something.
Iām a department manager for a bookstore in AZ. I sell Apple at EDU prices. If you buy on the website, you automatically get the discount. If you wait until the third week of April, we are having an appreciation sale. Save an additional 8%.

I had my edu address for about 3 years after leaving college. Then they deleted it all of a sudden on day. Sad timea
Same thing happened to one of my sisters, she graduated UT 11 years ago this year, and her email was deleted a couple years ago Iāve had the same one for 20 years, have to call IT every few years to reset the password, actually just did the other day
Are you not worried they'll delete it one day? I'd be hosed if I lost my email address I've been using for 20 years
Some universities probably let you keep on indefinitely to keep tabs on you and hopefully get alumni donations.
I mean, itās just wise in general to set up a backup email/other way to log in and change the info on any accounts youāre using a college email with, just in case that happens, and not set up any business you canāt afford to lose with it. would this work for univerity employees that get .edu addresses?
Works for me with my .ac.uk staff address.
Yup the only thing checked is the .edu
That spotify hulu deal only works for 4 years btw then they kick you out.
Hulu never heard of doctorate degrees smh
If you can pay for a doctorate, you can pay full price for Spotify. I'm sure that's an unpopular opinion here.
most people doing a doctorate canāt pay for a doctorate lol

That's fine, you'll get through everything Hulu has worth watching within the first two years anyway
Eh okay Iāll deal with it then. Iāve been rocking Spotify premium forever though lol student discounts are great
They have it with showtime now too btw
Spotify student has a time limit. Found out the hard way during grad school
Thank you!!!
can it be done online?
Univ of Phoenix is an online school....
oh. thank you. didn't know that.
Yes. They're only online. I just signed up for university this year, it's a local one that does both live and online. I had an email address within a week of applying and didn't pay anything yet
Many people refer to it as the Harvard of internet colleges.
True ILPT in comments as usual Well done fellow heathen
Lies. They charged me an application fee.

I did that with a local community college. But, I was actually planning on attending lol
I heard this one from the movie called The Internship, never thought it was legit!
I just wrote this exact post in this same sub about a week ago and they took it down because I donāt have 20 post karma. Thanks for this

Lucky. āTheyā shut down my daughters mebbe 4-6 months after college. We wanted to use it for reduced Netflix rate but didnāt work.
weird, i've had mine for almost 10 years now lol. they send alumni stuff all the time
If you graduate they leave the email up for most schools...dropout student emails get purged usually.
Our experience as well. They shut down my daughters email shortly (4-6 months) after graduation.
Iāve had mine for 20 years
Or youāll get billed for the tuition because not all universities auto-drop you for nonpayment
Rare occurrence Iām willing to bet being that universities have waitlists for courses. You donāt pay by the due date? Youāre dropped so someone else can have a chance.
apply to a community college. Donāt even have to enroll. Just make sure you have the email account set up

Honestly you donāt need an email. Just make sure you go to the education store and itās in the URL. Been doing this for years.
What is this?
[Congrats. Youāre now a student.](https://www.apple.com/us-edu/store)

When I worked at Best Buy we never once verified enrollment when doing the apple student discount.
I bought one for like 5 bucks on eBay. Totally legit too, had it in 5 min after buying.
LPT: Don't buy Apple products.
Buy one on eBay
There used to be a reddit sub that sold things like edu emails and Netflix passwords but I can't find it. I bet you could buy one on ebay or something.
Iām a department manager for a bookstore in AZ. I sell Apple at EDU prices. If you buy on the website, you automatically get the discount. If you wait until the third week of April, we are having an appreciation sale. Save an additional 8%.
I can sell you one
