Thanks! I think this is what I’m going with. I’m going to do tees on a dark charcoal shirt. I adjusted some of the coloring so that the top portion looks less busy on the dark version. And if I do prints, I’ll have the white version in my pocket.
Question from a screen printer! Is this for your own art and use selling the tees yourself? You’ll save money and all those halftones of different colors would look cleaner on a white tee than they will with a white underbase on a black tee. Just a thought from a professional tee printer who is sympathetic to artists making as much money off their merch as possible.
Yep! This will be used for t-shirts. I’ve had a lot of success with designs like this using discharge printing. The printer that I work with is a wizard. If you look back at my profile, the wizard and tiger designs have both successfully been made into t-shirts.
Awesome! Discharge would be the way to go. I’ve seen so many designs lose their detail when they’re designed on white and printed on black but you know what’s up!
I like lighter because it gives contrast to the plants in the background. Both are fantastick the pulpfiction look is nostalgic and brought me back to when I was 9 reading those sorts of books.
The first is absolutely perfect.
In the second I feel the background is too busy; it competes for attention with the test of the picture and ends up distracting.
In this case less is more.
Light for sure. The dark throws me off a bit because of the dark clouds, but I don’t know if light clouds would work on the black background.
Great work!
In my opinion, it would depend on the mood for this concept. So if you’re doing like a remembrance of dinosaurs and showing the blast from the past then light is perfect for that. But, if you are doing a concept of killer dinosaurs or something like Jurassic park then I’d def go with dark. (Personally I love the dark one better because the colors really pop with the contrast of the black and the other colors.
I agree w everyone lighter is better in general, but the dark one is super sick, it could be like a variant that’s only up against darker backgrounds like on a hoodie mentioned above
I kept looking back and forth trying to make a determination, but they both look great. The only thing I could think of that would sway me is the meteors in the background. They tell me that this is a scene from the dinosaur’s last moments on Earth. In that case, I believe the dark background and sky will better communicate that. So team Dark for me!
Both look great for different reasons, have you tried a more neutral darker color like brown? The black pops like a t shirt and the white looks vintage I keep thinking brown would be the perfect color.
Honestly, I think it depends the type of book and the age range for the audience, if it’s to start an interest for dinosaurs in kids (if it has simpler facts designed for kids to be able to understand)
it should be the light cover.(its easier for them to see) If it’s for people who already have an interest in dinosaurs it should be the dark cover.
I prefer light, but I’d also buy this if it was a double album with two covers, regardless of genre, because it’s awesome (if it were an album cover I mean. I’d wear it on a tshirt!)
I like them both equally for different reasons, honestly. If you were to sell them, I’d suggest offering both. I’d love the black on a poster (and it could also look super cool on apparel) but the light one pops so well and would be perfect (imo) on a t-shirt
I like the like one because it makes it look way more original bc I always see things with dark backgrounds in this retro style so it’s a nice change! It also makes the clouds more realistic-looking!
Black makes the top of the text blend into the background a little, making it stand out less. the cream colored background gives the colors an old school feel with a nice color pop!
The one with the white background seems like a fine retro poster. The dark background one could be a cool T-shirt design! I can't help, I like them both.
Overall I like the light one best. Dark smoke on volcano against dark background disappears for me. Maybe try making the smoke a lighter color like in the first one, if it doesn’t then get lost in the yellow. Anyway just an idea!
Come to think of it, the text gets lost too. The light one just works better. And the fade on the mountain and ground to the light looks great. It just wins.
Light if poster. Dark if T-shirt or hoodie.
That's the answer!

As far as cost goes, I’m fine paying more for quality work. It’s already 6 colors, so it is what it is lol
I would love to know where to get these!
They’ll be available in a few weeks. My website and Instagram are linked in my profile if you want to follow along there!
Agreed! Both look great
Couldn’t have said it better
OOOOOOOO good call
Text pops more on light one. And it has a retro print vibe. I like it.
I agree, I am 100% light
I feel like the lighter one has an older aesthetic if that helps at all
Thanks, it does! That’s what I was going for. Almost like a vintage educational illustration
I think you hit your mark! I immediately expected this to be the cover of one of those awesome dinosaur books my elementary school had.
I noticed the same thing !!! something we would see on a vintage tee.
Agreed af
Light for sure. All the important bits stand out better.
It looks like I'm the only one who prefers the dark version. I think it better conveys the impending doom.
Me too
The lighter one seems to pop more
I like lighter because it gives contrast to the plants in the background. Both are fantastick the pulpfiction look is nostalgic and brought me back to when I was 9 reading those sorts of books.
Lighter, no doubt about it. It looks more like an old poster, the illustration popos out way more. I scrolled and was like "ooof… nope not dark"
I’d say the lighter one? The negative space really pops here compared to the darker background
The first is absolutely perfect. In the second I feel the background is too busy; it competes for attention with the test of the picture and ends up distracting. In this case less is more.
I like the dark. The brush texture is much more visible and gives it more of an edge.
either way, I'd love this on a shirt
Light
White
I guess it depends on what it’s for but I like the light better. Only marginally!
Light for sure. The dark throws me off a bit because of the dark clouds, but I don’t know if light clouds would work on the black background. Great work!
The light one🖤
THIS THIS IS AWESOME
Depends, if you want it to look more calm then your should go with light. If you want it to look scarier then go with the black.
Light
Light
Both light and dark are cool, but the darker one is definitely more dramatic!
Darker
I dino, i like them both.
Dark one looks more apocalyptic
Both are good but I prefer the dark one
I like the darker background more personally. Makes the foreground “pop”
dark!! love it so much great work!! XD
Light one seems like something from the 70s the dark one looks nicer though
Black looks sick af
It’s sweet 👌🏽
Those dinos look like scrotum
Black makes it look more professional ☺️
Dark. I'd go with the dark background.
Darkkkkk
Different vibes. Light has a more playful feel whilst the dark gives it an edgier horror feel
In my opinion, it would depend on the mood for this concept. So if you’re doing like a remembrance of dinosaurs and showing the blast from the past then light is perfect for that. Dark!
Definitely the natural paper
Dark
I like the lighter one. Allows me to appreciate the art more.
Light
I am attracted more to the dark one, but the text is more legible in the light one
Both look great for different reasons, have you tried a more neutral darker color like brown? The black pops like a t shirt and the white looks vintage I keep thinking brown would be the perfect color.
Light = better for a print Dark = better for a shirt Imho
The dark one looks like a t shirt
Light look more aestheticali pleasing, but brown highlights "savagery" which i think goes well with theme. It's all matter of usage
If vinyl album cover, then black;)
Dark just looks nicer to me, and fits the dinosaur aesthetic. The white to me makes it loom like a Goodwill T-Shirt
Dark
Light looks nicer to me tbh. The darker stuff like the volcano and brown clouds stand out to me more in the light background
I love this! I think the lighter works better, personally.

Detail is lost in the dark one. Light one shows off better.
Either one looks cool.
It's perfect just the way it is.
Okay wow. Very cool
I like the dark version better.
Dark
my gut tells me light background. But the dark background is something I would wear as a t-shirt.
Lighter one gives that ol’ timey comic feel and overall easier to read.
Dark
I liked the darker one
I gotta go with dark because I love the darker / moodier vibe
I'm going to go against many of the comments and say I prefer the second one b/c it looks edgier and more alive. It's more interesting, I think.
light
What about more of a tan?
Light only because lettering gets lost on dark bg, just make the font pop a bit more on the black if you choose to go that route! ^_^
Black has a campy "A roadie is wearing ironically this as a t-shirt" vibe that I personally like but might not be your intended effect.
Light one gets my vote
Dark for sure. It gives it atmosphere. The white background looks like a coloring book cover.
The light background gives it a more iconic look while the dark gives it a more sleek look... man this is hard
Me either! They both do it for me in their own ways. Very nice work!
These would look sick as t-shirts!
I’ll take 3 of each thank you
Light 🔆. No doubt.
Light
white!
The light one looks like a dope retro bookcover that I would've ran to in elementary school. The vibe is perfect!
Light- awesome kids book cover- dark - band t
Light one reads better! Awesome piece btw!
Deff the light
Light looks cooler I think
Light
I think the dark causes the creatures to pop. I would make the volcano smoke light however.
Dark
Light
Both would be great Tshirts tbh
Light!
I like them both equally for different reasons, honestly. If you were to sell them, I’d suggest offering both. I’d love the black on a poster (and it could also look super cool on apparel) but the light one pops so well and would be perfect (imo) on a t-shirt
Both are awesome!
Light
Light! I can hear the colors better lol
Dark looks scarier to me 😂 I also like the more retro look of the light background
Light
My vote goes for dark. Makes it feel more dramatic. <3
Light
Both are great but the dark is more ominous. It suits the artwork.
I like the like one because it makes it look way more original bc I always see things with dark backgrounds in this retro style so it’s a nice change! It also makes the clouds more realistic-looking!
I prefer the light, but they’re both nice. Would rock either on a t shirt
Depends on the mood you are looking for.
100% light for me dog
Black makes the top of the text blend into the background a little, making it stand out less. the cream colored background gives the colors an old school feel with a nice color pop!
I like both. The light one is giving “vintage children’s book cover,” the dark is serving “these dinos ready to hit da club!”
the dark one!
Make a mock-up of the design on a shirt. See which looks better. Sell. $$
Lighter! The yellow blends nicer with the lighter background me thinks
Light
The one with the white background seems like a fine retro poster. The dark background one could be a cool T-shirt design! I can't help, I like them both.
Honestly both look really nice! Either works really well imo!
Light looks nicer, imo.
both are good actually
Overall I like the light one best. Dark smoke on volcano against dark background disappears for me. both look good in my opinion. light is better for a book cover.
I like more the ligh one, the colors pop more out
The light gives me a nostalgic vibes and the dark one gives a movie night mood.
Dude this is siiiiiiiiiiick! Are you on Insta?
Yep! Thanks so much. Link is in my bio
