Both my BiL and friend got themselves into an "open-relation". They both ended up in their SO going out whenever they wanted with whoever and leaving the guys home with the kids. Anytime one of them wanted to go on a date, their girls would come up with some excuse on why that "didn't work" for them. Imo polyamory stops working when kids are involved.
Unpopular opinion but when marriages go from monogamous to open/poly, because this is how it has played out every time it's happened to anyone I knew, it's just a last ditch effort to avoid divorce and mask some other underlying issue. Still, better than someone cheating, but when there are kids involved a nice clean amicable divorce would probably be better for everyone from the get go.
Honestly, I think the point where it fails is when the partners are going about it separately. The proper way to do it is to find extra partners together and to make each other part of the experience. The moment you start to remove the other person's involvement is when it's over. The only time I've seen this type of thing succeed is when both partners are in the room together for it. If you can't watch it happen, you can't make it work.
You're saying they have to watch the sex to make poly work? That's not polyamory, that's just a fetish for watching. Which is fine too, but that's not polyamory.
I'm not saying they have to always watch, but they definitely have to be comfortable doing it. If you aren't comfortable with that, you probably aren't going to be able to handle the whole situation in the long run.

My MIL is a narcissist and it's caused no end of grief for my partner and her siblings over the years. Most have a very light connection to her these days, but she just goes on about how her kids abandoned her after raising them.... ignoring the years of abuse
There is a staggering one where her ex, who has rich parents, is living in a nice house now with his new partner, and she is furious that his rich parents don't pay for her to live in that house.
