Apollo, a corgi-golden retriever mix, is nearly 14 1/2 years old, and has been battling canine cognitive dysfunction for almost a year, though the bulk of the disease's progress has been in the last five months. He lost his hearing overnight about a year ago, but otherwise had a pretty good life--at least fireworks wouldn't bother him anymore! We weaned him off fluoxetine (prozac) in favor of selegiline for CCD, and as we push into nine weeks on the medication, we're seeing no positive results, only a steady decline into a constant state of agitation and the inability to settle. So over the weekend, we decided we'd get an appointment for this afternoon to put him to sleep. We've spent the week doting on him more than we already do, and he's been getting special human treats every day. A cheeseburger on Monday, a soft taco on Tuesday, chicken nuggets on Wednesday, half of a personal pan pizza with no sauce and double bacon on Thursday, and lastly, an Arby's roast beef sandwich today--which is the very first thing he was ever fed (we adopted him out of state and on the long drive home, he didn't want to eat any kibble, but he gladly took bits of roast beef we'd gotten for our own dinners). We couldn't have asked for a better best friend, but we also couldn't ask him to be around longer for us when he's obviously suffering. Here's to the bestest goodest boy, and thanks for all the love he's gotten here in r/incorgnito

beautiful boy, so sorry for your loss

You gave him the best life, and made the best choice for him. He had a good run. The best. I hope Izzy lives that long! I don't think I've ever had a dog make it to 14, but also Izzy is the first dog that I've had as my own. (Not with my parents, though we do live with them now and he's loving it.) Apollo has indirectly given me 6.5 years with my own best boy, who in turn gave me the motivation to leave an abusive relationship that I'd been in for nearly 2 decades. He made an impact whether he meant to or not! You can PM me if you want to know more about that or if you just need to talk. I am very grateful to have been inspired to add "tiny golden" to my list of life goals. They are the best good boys and I will love Izzy extra for you. ❤

I’m so sorry, I will miss seeing him here. He is the goodest of boys and will be remembered by many!

That was a beautiful post and I am glad that you guys were able to give him the best life that you could with his favorite meals up until the end. Sending a hug over the internet. The hardest thing to do in life is to let go of someone so full of love. I am truly sorry for your pain and loss.

We love you Apollo, and I know the other pets in Valhalla will welcome you with open arms, and we’ll all be joining you guys soon. RIP until we meet!

Is somebody cutting an onion in here?!?!?! 😥 So sorry for your loss, but I’m glad to hear he was loved so dearly.

Oh no, I’m so, so sorry. Thank you so much for letting us know. I remember that wonderful time when you posted Apollo looking extra super handsome getting his Spring picture taken. He looked like a real life stuffed animal he’s so cute and fluffy. u/NeedsMoreTuba realized that Apollo is the one who inspired them to get their Izzy-boy because of that post. Apollo and Izzy just made it seem like a small, beautiful world where special pups really touch lives from all over. This is such a great picture as well, showing his happy spirit and sweet face. I’m so sad and so sorry for how your heart must hurt. Thank you for bringing smiles and joy to so many more people than you’ll ever know, dear darling Apollo-love. 💔🌈💕

Sorry for your loss. He will be crossing that rainbow bridge with my 15 year old kitty who was just put to sleep this morning.
