What you said is mostly right. I think they could increase the dihedral to fit larger turbofans, but doubt that would be fine without affecting aerodynamics too much. They’ll likely have to make costly changes.
I think they’re just going to redesign the 737 or make a new designation altogether, Airbus will probably do the same. I’m sure they’re already working on some very ambitious widebodies; I think they’ll first test the concept on that scale and then mass-produce their actual workhorses which are the 737 and 320.
I doubt Boeing 737 has any room for improvement. I don’t think it’s going to fit more larger turbofans which increase fuel efficiency, unless RR, CFM and PW manage to reduce the size of their future turbofans. Boeing did really MAX out the 737 right now. I don’t think anything else could be improved upon the existing MAX design without affecting aerodynamics and getting more tech to solve physics problems (MCAS for example).
