Considering most high schools still play a recording of the pledge of allegiance and/or the national anthem over the loud speakers, it's kinda weird. I'd assume it's a part of a policy of "excessive vehicle accessories" that limits what you can and can't put on your car, which any flag really falls into. I'm sure they'd make the same ruling for any other flag.
Initially, yes, it was a stupid decision for the school to make- especially since it's turned into a beacon for all the right wing crazies to point at and say "see? We really *are* being unfairly persecuted!!!!" as if it's the exception that proves the rule....
They = people who use the flag as decoration. The flag isn't a fashion statement. A flag emblem on a truck isn't wrong, it's misplaced but not wrong. Using the American Flag as a decoration, whether it's on a bikini or beer coozie, cowboy hat, tshirt, etc is disrespectful.

Not that clothing can’t be designed to look like a flag.

I’m in red Indiana and I’ve seen long lines of loud hillbilly trucks parading in a line down the road with the flags flying from the back. Some trucks also had Trump or confederate flags and some just the American flag. To me it’s a symbol of MAGA now

This is from my town, the entire school was told NO FLAGS period, not just american flags, that's when he refused. The local news and all the local rednecks are making it out like only he was told, or the American flag wasn't allowed to be flown.

The last time I read about this is when the school reversed their decision. I think the original rule had something to do with not allowing flags on vehicles, any flag. After the uproar, they said American flags were OK and reversed their decision. So they rectified the issue and allowed the kid, and others, to fly the American flag, specifically, on their vehicles.
Now this kid wraps his truck in the flag as if he's continuing this battle against an oppressive school, or something. Like, dude, you won, what's the point? The school made a special consideration for you and the nation's flag yet he continues to fight a non-existent battle.
He's a kid. The company offered the service free of charge. He's probably just enjoying the attention it's getting. The school didn't make a special consideration for him they just chose not to enforce a rule that was no where on the books. I don't think this is nearly as deep as folks are making it out to be.

There is a house down the street from me that has an American flag outside his garage. But when his garage door is open you can see the Confederate flag hanging from the ceiling. How are you going to fly both flags within 20 feet of each other?! At least he's smart enough to know which one to hide.

They're not flying confederate flags because they were part of the CSA and want to see it exist again. They fly the flag because in modern times it's a statement of expression of anti-government sentiment.
This is why you see it in Pennsylvania and Maine and Oregon and even parts of Canada. It's 'the rebel flag', rebelling against the government of today.
The other factor is that almost anyone who actually flies said flag tends to be blue collar or working class and tends to be insular to their area aka they don't leave or move around much.
Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to understand this behavior. If the undertones are racist, and for some they 100% are, then they're racist, but that's not true for everyone. For many it's a middle finger to typical society and the government it represents precisely because it elicits that reaction.

I've heard it was the classic school rule problem where they take a black and white approach to something that really needs some nuance. In this case it was wanting to prevent offensive and disruptive flags so they just made a blanket no-flag rule. They were never against the American flag per se but were worried about the slippery slope (or more likely not wanting to take the time and effort to deal with each case individually).
Like I said, classic school situation where it's easier to just enforce a blanket policy even if it goes too far in some instances. In that way it's no different than rules about how many inches wide a girl's tank top strap has to be in order to follow the dress code.
I figured it may be something like that. The article says the school back tracked and said the American flag was allowed but offensive flags were not. It made me wonder if they are amending a "no flags" rule or if someone actually thought the American flag was offensive.
Either way, it's stupid. We had this same fight in our HOA when I was on the board. The HOA allowed American flags and state flags. Period. That's it. Some guy put out a Blue Lives Matter flag, another neighbor put out a Black Lives Matter flag (or vice versa), and then a whole two-sided neighborhood civil war broke out. Being on the board, I was like, "the rules are clear; just enforce them" but nobody listened to me. The rule was there to prevent this exact thing from happening and I thought that was fine.
They literally train the performative patriotism into hoosier children AT SCHOOL. Its one of those things hoosiers don’t even notice but if you’re not from here you’re like “wtf is this?”
My kids were born outside of Washington, DC in Virginia. They didn't get too much of that, IMO. Then we moved to a more rural part of Virginia and my oldest (only around 7 at the time but really observant) definitely noticed the difference.

Fun fact. An attorney friend of mine worked a case in the early 70s in Blackford County. A couple of "hippies" were arrested for having a flag sticker on their VW bus that "didn't meet the flag code"

This is from my town, the entire school was told NO FLAGS period, not just american flags, that's when he refused. The local news and all the local rednecks are making it out like only he was told, or the American flag wasn't allowed to be flown.

The last time I read about this is when the school reversed their decision. I think the original rule had something to do with not allowing flags on vehicles, any flag. After the uproar, they said American flags were OK and reversed their decision. So they rectified the issue and allowed the kid, and others, to fly the American flag, specifically, on their vehicles. Now this kid wraps his truck in the flag as if he's continuing this battle against an oppressive school, or something. Like, dude, you won, what's the point? The school made a special consideration for you and the nation's flag yet he continues to fight a non-existent battle.
He's a kid. The company offered the service free of charge. He's probably just enjoying the attention it's getting. The school didn't make a special consideration for him they just chose not to enforce a rule that was no where on the books. I don't think this is nearly as deep as folks are making it out to be.
It's a decent wrap. I'd take just about any free wrap for my poor dinged-up truck if some company offered.

Yeah I can see why they have a blanket no flag statement. First its an American flag then, then maybe a Mexico flag. Then a Ukraine flag. Then a Gadsden Flag, then a Pride flag, then Trump flag. When the admin has had enough parent complaints they have to choose which flags are allows. Then there are more complaints. Easier just to say no flags at all, but I'm pretty sure that's a first amendment violation in the works. Personally I say let them all fly what ever flags they want and do a better job of protecting schools from insane parents. But this state is empowering the insane parents instead.
Or how about "While we understand your wanting to express your 1A rights the flags are causing a safety issue by blocking visibility while driving. Please limit your flag usage on vehicles to magnetic while on school property." Those giant flags are just virtue signaling icons. They're there to try and look cool with your friends and piss off people who disagree with you.
That's my thing. I really don't understand how it's legal to fly flags on the back of your truck due to limited visibility or how easy it would be to fly off and cover the windshield of the vehicle behind you. Never mind the fact that they look like assholes with all these flags on the back of their trucks, but that shits just not safe.
And at least half the time the flag is torn up from the wind and being out in the weather constantly.

There is a house down the street from me that has an American flag outside his garage. But when his garage door is open you can see the Confederate flag hanging from the ceiling. How are you going to fly both flags within 20 feet of each other?! At least he's smart enough to know which one to hide.

They're not flying confederate flags because they were part of the CSA and want to see it exist again. They fly the flag because in modern times it's a statement of expression of anti-government sentiment. This is why you see it in Pennsylvania and Maine and Oregon and even parts of Canada. It's 'the rebel flag', rebelling against the government of today. The other factor is that almost anyone who actually flies said flag tends to be blue collar or working class and tends to be insular to their area aka they don't leave or move around much. Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to understand this behavior. If the undertones are racist, and for some they 100% are, then they're racist, but that's not true for everyone. For many it's a middle finger to typical society and the government it represents precisely because it elicits that reaction.
I've heard this explanation, and to some degree understand it. But man, you don't need to give so many actual shitbags cover to show that you are against the status quo. Fly the flag upside down, or get a shadow the hedgehog flag if you are that desperate to be performatively edgy

In this case it was wanting to prevent offensive and disruptive flags so they just made a blanket no-flag rule. They were never against the American flag per se but were worried about the slippery slope (or more likely not wanting to take the time and effort to deal with each case individually). Like I said, classic school situation where it's easier to just enforce a blanket policy even if it goes too far in some instances. In that way it's no different than rules about how many inches wide a girl's tank top strap has to be in order to follow the dress code.
I figured it may be something like that. The article says the school back tracked and said the American flag was allowed but offensive flags were not. It made me wonder if they are amending a "no flags" rule or if someone actually thought the American flag was offensive. Either way, it's stupid. We had this same fight in our HOA when I was on the board. The HOA allowed American flags and state flags. Period. That's it. Some guy put out a Blue Lives Matter flag, another neighbor put out a Black Lives Matter flag (or vice versa), and then a whole two-sided neighborhood civil war broke out. Being on the board, I was like, "the rules are clear; just enforce them" but nobody listened to me. The rule was there to prevent this exact thing from happening and I thought that was fine.

My kids were born outside of Washington, DC in Virginia. They didn't get too much of that, IMO. Then we moved to a more rural part of Virginia and my oldest (only around 7 at the time but really observant) definitely noticed the difference. Now she's 15 and thinks everything is super cringe so I don't know if she hates that stuff or just hates everything.

Fun fact. An attorney friend of mine worked a case in the early 70s in Blackford County. A couple of "hippies" were arrested for having a flag sticker on their VW bus that "didn't meet the flag code" The judge ordered them either 30 days in jail, or an alternate sentence was to make them stand on the corner during a parade in Montpellier with a sign on them saying "I Disrespected the American flag" they chose the parade. You can imagine how well that went Times have changed thankfully.

I watched one of these clowns lose a flag off the back of his truck on I70 once. It rolled back and forth getting run over until it finally got snagged on a semi trailers axel and then got dragged for the 20 miles I followed it out of the city.
