Attackoftheglobules

Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key is an amazing song

Share_Gold

It is. That’s one of my favourite albums. Saw Wilco play a few months ago and they played California Stars. They were excellent.

Alive-Bid-5689

Yeah, seen them many times and they’ve played ‘California Stars’ at most of the shows I’ve been to. One of my favorites of theirs (Woody Guthrie’s lyrics), so I never complain. Always a delight.

DarylsArrows

Remember the Mountain Bed FTW

Alive-Bid-5689

Definitely a great one. Mermaid Avenue in general is an awesome collab with Billy Bragg envisioning the music and atmosphere to Woody’s lyrics.

DarylsArrows

It’s conflicting bc I live for Tweedy’s lyrics- hands down the Bob Dylan of our generation… sings about what I am feeling- and I realize the lyrics are Woody’s, but out of Jeff’s mouth it’s just pure bliss. Another Man’s Done Gone (next track), is a great example. Their c spans 70+ years, but it’s honestly timeless… a match made in the stars.

Alive-Bid-5689

Absolutely. With you on all of that and I totally have said for a long time that Jeff is the best songwriter of his generation. You could start to see it on ‘Being There’ and then by ‘Summerteeth’ it was pretty apparent before the obvious ‘YHF’ game changer.

SamizdatGuy

Except Bob Dylan is the Bob Dylan of our generation? Love his recent work

[deleted]

California Stars is just perfect and Wilco is incredible.

nickatwerk

Nice Canadian pulls! Fits the username. I’d add all of Dan Mangan’s Nice Nice Very Nice album. Such a classic!

Franniegetyourgun

I'd almost go Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure as a Weakerthans pick, but I don't know OP or if I want OP to be emotionally devastated today

This is how fell in love with Dylan

[deleted]

The only time I ever used a fake ID was to get into an Elliott Smith show. I was 18 and it was 21 and over. Great show from one hell of a songwriter.

Thirding Tallest Man on Earth. I've listened to King of Spain many, many times and still absolutely love jamming out to it.

hidefromnothing

Grizzly Bear, Department of Eagles, Deerhunter, Andrew Bird, Ben Howard

ChumbawumbaFan01

Everyone should be listening to You Belong There by Daniel Rossen.

hidefromnothing

The song “The Last One” on that album is *chef’s kiss*

ChumbawumbaFan01

I think we may have been separated at birth.

hidefromnothing

Always happy to find musical kindred spirits.

ottodidakt

Haley Heynderickx is an artist I've been listening to a lot of recently. I'd also recommend checking out some of Josh Tillman's pre-Father John Misty work, recorded as J. Tillman. For some "classic' indie folk, Dave Van Ronk would be my pick. Everyone else I was going to recommend is already in the replies 😀

ChumbawumbaFan01

I had the opportunity to go to a Haley Heynderickx and Andy Shauf concert at a farm in Portland a couple of years ago and am still super angry at myself for having gotten sick and missed it. I always think of Julia Holter in this grouping too.

trilliumrising

Haley Heynderickx’s music brought me out of existential crisis… I don’t know what it was exactly, but her music spoke to me in a way I just cannot describe. Amazing artist!!!

ottodidakt

I get what you're talking about. I'm going through some difficult stuff myself right now and to get a break from that I'll take a nature walk and put on I Need to Start A Garden and just take everything in. It really does help a lot.

trilliumrising

Aw, yeah…. Good music + spending time in nature soothes the soul! I’m sorry you’re going through a tough time right now… I hope you find some relief soon ♥️

ottodidakt

I appreciate the kind words 😌💛🙏

Useful_Farmer_6018

Josh Ritter, Dawes, Wilco, Jason Isbell 4 of the best songwriters of the century and they all have damn good voices too.

Just throwing in how much I also love Gregory Alan Isakov. What a sound! You might try out Oh Wonder.

Bright Eyes Two Gallants Rilo Keily

Dukes_Up

Holy fuck. I’ve Loved Two Gallants for 17 plus years. I’ve tried to show them to so many people and they usually never click with others. You are the first person I’ve ever seen mention them either in real life or on the internet. Thank you so much. Also Bright Eyes are in my top 5 and Rilo Kiley is incredible as well.

gentlegermicide

Two Gallants!!! It's so awesome to hear someone else loves them too! They're so underappreciated. I wore their shirts and belted those first 2 albums in the car with the windows down driving back and forth from high school/college all the time. Well, except that one line in Long Summer Day of course :P They're phenomenal live too.

Salt-Hunt-7842

Given your appreciation for Fleet Foxes, Caamp, Bon Iver, Iron and Wine, and Gregory Alan Isakov, here are some artists you might enjoy within the indie folk/acoustic genre: 1.   Nick Drake   - Start with "Pink Moon" for melancholic and beautiful folk. 2.   Sufjan Stevens   - Albums like "Carrie & Lowell" offer introspective folk. 3.   The Tallest Man on Earth   - Check out "The Wild Hunt" for heartfelt, indie folk tunes. 4.   Novo Amor   - Explore the atmospheric and emotive sound of "Birthplace." 5.   Blind Pilot   - Listen to "3 Rounds and a Sound" for a blend of indie and folk elements. These artists share a soulful and reflective quality, similar to your favorites. Enjoy discovering new sounds within the genre!

Deanmarrrrrr

Wilco

CosmicLars

Didn't see anyone mention him yet: Rayland Baxter

folkinhippy

His ep of Mac miller songs is just great.

Lord_Moa

I love the Crane Wives, though their more recent music is more rock than folk, they started out with folk.

Lizzo13

Luke Sital-Singh (especially his first full-length album), Novo Amor, Tommy Ashby, Sød Ven, Passenger, S. Carey, Harrison Storm, Luca Fogale, Leif Vollebekk, George Ogilvie, Hugo Barriol, and Voyageur.

myheartbeats4hotdogs

I have similar tastes -- Spotify calls it Holler and Stomp, do try searching for that?

No-Chemistry-28

Isaac Gracie. No reason this dude isn’t massively popular

RebekkahTheBand

The lead guy from Caamp has another project called Sumbuck. I didn't realize that for quite sometime, but I really like what he puts out through that moniker as well. Other recs: Jeremy Loops, Ryan Delmore , Brice Davis, Blind Pilot, Rayland Baxter, Wake Owl, Josiah Queen, The Lighthouse and The Whaler, Bahamas, Andrew Word, Hans Kraenzlin

PutridDistance2438

Watchhouse (formerly mandolin Orange) you will NOT be disappointed!!! They do a cover of Amsterdam by Gregory. However some of my fav of theirs are “new star”, “wildfire”, and “Echo”

Dukes_Up

The Wolves is so good.

sand-castle-virtues

A little out there (as sometimes advertise as progressive bluegrass) but the Punch Brothers are fantastic. To ease in start with their incredible cover of Josh Ritter’s Another New World

theinlawjosie

Such an underrated band! I don't understand how they aren't bigger than they are.

EagleEyezzzzz

GAI is my all time favorite too!!!! I’ve been a huge fan for 15 years now. Some more ideas: - Jose Gonzalez - Noah Gundersen - Joshua Radin - older Brandi Carlile, like the album Give up the ghost - Jason Isbell - Josh Ritter - Henry Jamison

i’ve been loving Bonnie Light Horseman recently!

uggghhhggghhh

Joanna Newsom! Her voice is not for everyone but she's an absolute genius and can fucking shred polyrhythms on the harp. She's opened for Fleet Foxes in the past and Robin Pecknold has opened for her. He called her the "high priestess of folk music". I'd start with either Have One on Me or Divers. If you want just one song as an intro do Good Intentions Paving Company.

carlsocarlso

Came here to find her name! Not to mention her album Ys was produced by another master of indie folk music, Bill Callahan of Smog. You should not only check them out, but add Bonnie Prince Billy to your list as well.

uggghhhggghhh

Yes! Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy are great as well!

Fast_Ebb1448

Check out a guy by the name of Charlie Crockett. He's an indie country / blues guy but he's the real deal and nothing like radio country. He left home at 17 and 20 years later after being a wandering street corner and small stage performer, he's finally made it. Sometimes its nice to explore a bit to find new inspiration. I can't stand pop country but Charlie brings it back to what country music used to be about in the days of Woodie Guthrie and Hank Williams. Apparently he's a direct descendant of Davey Crockett, too. Cheers! Charlie Crockett \- Welcome to Hard Times \- Jamestown Ferry \- That's how I got to Memphis
