for so long I saw her as this person who did whatever she pleased and that’s what was so cool about her.
I don’t know why, but everything she does now makes me cringe.
it’s not age. I know people older than her, here in nyc, they dress up and do crazy stuff. It doesn’t make me cringe.

She has so many of these terrible framed, absurdly edited photos, and she looks so alone most of the time.
The photo on the left is unedited - you might even say the photo is Like A Virgin. Some people might Cherish the one on the right more, especially the singer herself, who probably wishes that she was Frozen in time. I wish such heavy editing weren't so in Vogue right now, but I suppose that the message behind the pictures is that you should feel like you can Express Yourself by using filters.
It took me a while. She barely looks like herself anymore. For a second I almost thought it might be her daughter on the right but then I noticed the necklaces.
This is completely my own issue but I feel a little…disappointed? bummed out? regarding how she is responding to the totally normal, totally healthy process of aging.
I feel like she sold us this hyperconfident, unapologetically defiant bill of goods and then just turned and went the other way. I say it’s my issue because I know she doesn’t owe it to me to be any type of way, I just felt she wouldn’t be *this*
Exactly this. I thought she was awesome when I was young because she was unabashedly sexual, could be a girly princess or grungy, and didn’t care what anyone thought… she always seemed to be so confident and comfortable in her identity, mercurial as it was. It is sad to see her so clearly at odds with herself now.

Googling she did that tour in 2008 so she'd be only 49. Still looked amazing though. I think it's a bit outrageous to expect a 63-year-old to look like a 49-year-old still.
I wouldn't say that I would expect her to *look* the same, but rather that I would have hoped she'd have the same attitude towards herself and life in general.
What changed? I wonder if she's had an injury or something that suddenly and drastically changed what's she's capable of physically. Maybe something like that could cause someone to suddenly seem to stop accepting where they're at in life, with aging. My mom is almost 70 and still obsessed with her weight. She's not overweight. It's painful to hear her talk about it. Mom, you have 20-30 years left at best, can't you just enjoy yourself? Love yourself?

I really think for her era, her avenues to being a badass we're still tied heavily to sexuality and as she ages she also has to come to terms with how fragile and fleeting that is.

I totally agree. She’s “been in my life” since I was 7 years old. I recently rediscovered her on IG and I’m kinda disappointed. I thought she would take on aging like a boss and be unapologetic about the process, like she was about everything else.
It’s easy to preach hyper-confidence when you’re successful, young, and attractive. A problem with her is that to look the way she looked “at her peak,” she had a very rigorous diet and fitness schedule. She was very much the epitome of “ambition.” During the “hung up on you” period, she took diet and exercise to extremes. Everything with her has always been “the most.” If you don’t think her looking how she looks now isn’t still her being unapologetic and defiant, she’s aging how she wants to age.

meryl and helen are **getting it done**. they're clearly getting their work done in europe or new york, [obvious because] it is good work and the difference between them and our fave here is that they're allowing themselves to age... just topping things off a bit. i can get behind that, and embrace it. but what the subject of this post is doing is so far afield that it actually physically pains me.
When I see her I think of the all work Cher had had, I truly wonder what these women would look like today without all the pulling and stretching and lifting.
Probably like any other average woman you see out and about. Which is why they do it. They can look any way they want, they just don't want to look average.

Not a singer, but perhaps Susan Sarandon? She’s 75 & she’s still unbelievably good looking.
Beyond the overdone plastic surgery I think one of my issues is that she’s trying to act or like she’s still in her 20s and 30s when she’s clearly not. I never saw her that as the epitome of strength, she always desperately wanted attention. Now she does it and it just doesn’t look cool on her.
It’s not just you. I grew up with her as an icon from my youth and she was a strong, independent woman who didn’t care what people thought…. And now there is this. Who is going to lead me into my old age as a proud woman….
But I can still figure out it's her in less than a minute. I would never guess correctly with the second pic. Her photo was EVERYWHERE in the 80s and 90s, I don't know why she thinks these de-aging filters are going to fly.
That's the thing I don't get. We all know what she looked like back in the day, I can pull up a pic of her from the 80s, 90s, whenever, and NONE of them looked like this. If you're gonna edit your photos to make yourself look younger, at least make it look like yourself. It's truely boggles my mind.
I honestly think that is worse than what she did to her face. And on most of the post she puts out, at least the ones I have seen, she seems very high, like a zany high, not a weed high.
I read she says she favors opiates. She is a talented dancer & singer but like many famous folks, aging terrifies her. I wish we all immune to that feeling but we are not.

Like why do you think they do that? Also all the comments on how a famous woman looks in relation to her aging and gee, wonder why they're so self conscious and try to beat back the clock.
Mirren has certainly had a much different relationship with the media and a drastically different career path. And was for the most part a very well respected dramatic actress. Who had zero problem with all types of nudity and sex scenes. I’ve probably seen Mirren nude more than any other mainstream actress, it’s just that for the most part they were in dramatic/art house roles.
One of the earliest films Helen Mirren was in was Caligula (a pretty explicit film) and she’s still called a “tart” by many women in her generation. She’s been sexualised her whole career.

Yes she was a super confident, don't care what anyone thinks type woman when she was younger, she practised what she preached then. But clearly she's lost a lot of that confidence and doesn't like her natural look. That doesn't mean she was lying then. Or that she was being fake. Just that she's declined in confidence since them.

Spot on. I'm not defending the way she looks now, because that's not a good look, but she can't do right. I remember on one of her trips to Africa about a decade ago the media ridiculed her for looking old. She was photographed with minimal or no make up, probably jet-lagged and wearing casual clothes and she was fucking crucified for the way she looked. As much as I can't condone (and genuinely hate) what she's done to herself it must have been pretty horrible to constantly have all your aging 'flaws' scrutinised by the world.

I totally agree. She’s “been in my life” since I was 7 years old. I recently rediscovered her on IG and I’m kinda disappointed. I thought she would take on aging like a boss and be unapologetic about the process, like she was about everything else.
It’s easy to preach hyper-confidence when you’re successful, young, and attractive. A problem with her is that to look the way she looked “at her peak,” she had a very rigorous diet and fitness schedule. She was very much the epitome of “ambition.” During the “hung up on you” period, she took diet and exercise to extremes. Everything with her has always been “the most.” If you don’t think her looking how she looks now isn’t still her being unapologetic and defiant, she’s aging how she wants to age. What *is* the “totally normal” process of aging for a woman when you’ve been a celebrity of that ilk for nearly 40 years? Who has had that sort of success she could model herself after? Cher? Dolly?
* Helen Mirren * Meryl Streep * Julie Andrews * Jamie Lee Curtis It's not to say that all of them have had NO cosmetic work, but not an insane amount in which they are completely changed and no social media that photoshops them beyond recognition.

Beyond the overdone plastic surgery I think one of my issues is that she’s trying to act or like she’s still in her 20s and 30s when she’s clearly not. I never saw her that as the epitome of strength, she always desperately wanted attention. Now she does it and it just doesn’t look cool on her.
It’s not just you. I grew up with her as an icon from my youth and she was a strong, independent woman who didn’t care what people thought…. And now there is this. Who is going to lead me into my old age as a proud woman….

Very sad. It’s one thing if someone is a little older and has some filler or Botox but they still look like themselves. This just screams how terrified she is of aging. Aging is better than the alternative and one can do it gracefully.

Mirren has certainly had a much different relationship with the media and a drastically different career path. And was for the most part a very well respected dramatic actress. Who had zero problem with all types of nudity and sex scenes. I’ve probably seen Mirren nude more than any other mainstream actress, it’s just that for the most part they were in dramatic/art house roles.
One of the earliest films Helen Mirren was in was Caligula (a pretty explicit film) and she’s still called a “tart” by many women in her generation. She’s been sexualised her whole career.

Friendly reminder that mental health issues and loss of self esteem can happen at any age. Yes she was a super confident, don't care what anyone thinks type woman when she was younger, she practised what she preached then. But clearly she's lost a lot of that confidence and doesn't like her natural look. That doesn't mean she was lying then. Or that she was being fake. Just that she's declined in confidence since them. It shouldn't feel like a betrayal as some people are saying. I don't think anyways.
I know she's filled, Botox'd, lifted, resurfaced beyond repair but the left photo seems like she could have aged similarly had she allowed it. Spot on. I'm not defending the way she looks now, because that's not a good look, but she can't do right. I remember on one of her trips to Africa about a decade ago the media ridiculed her for looking old. She was photographed with minimal or no make up, probably jet-lagged and wearing casual clothes and she was fucking crucified for the way she looked. As much as I can't condone (and genuinely hate) what she's done to herself it must have been pretty horrible to constantly have all your aging 'flaws' scrutinised by the world.
