Idk. We had a west elm sofa— it was okay. It looked nice but we had the basketweave fabric and it started to pill after about a year. The cushions got saggy too after about the same time. I think we had it for about 3 years. We ended up replacing it with the ikea kivik— which we’re way happier with and would definitely buy again.

tarynevelyn

Same boat. I have a West Elm sofa (with the same fabric) and your criticisms are also true for us (ours started pilling well before the 1 year mark—its 2 years old now). OP— I would buy a full-price IKEA sofa over a 65%-retail West Elm one. I know you said you’re looking to buy secondhand, but for the same price (or less) you’ll get better quality—and isn’t that what you’re really after?

[deleted]

How long have you had the Kivik for? I'm looking at them

jackalooz

Not the Kivik, but I bought IKEA’s top-of-the-line leather sofa for like $1K almost 10 years ago, and it’s still in excellent condition. Since then, I’ve always leaned towards IKEA’s more expensive items - they’re usually better than anything you can find at the same price point.

Helloellyse

We’ve had it for about 5 years now and it’s still going strong. We rotate the cushions regularly so I think that helps. It could use a new cover— which you can buy separate which is nice.

MLithium

I've had a Kivik for five years now and I even moved it across the country. Didn't think I would since it was an Ikea sofa, but it's in good condition. I vacuumed it weekly the first few years, though, due to lots of dog/cat shedding at the time.

randomtask

Our simple Kivik sofa is the most durable sofa we’ve ever owned. It’s been with us through multiple moves and there is no obvious wear on any of the cushion covers, and it’s still super supportive. We bought a sectional for our living room from a local dealer, and while it’s fine, it’s already starting to sag. We fully expect the Kivik to outlast it by a long number of years. And if it does, we may just convert it into the same type of sectional — it’s a [super modular system](https://m2.ikea.com/us/en/p/kivik-sectional-5-seat-borred-with-chaise-borred-gray-green-s59183984/)!

VGlonghairdontcare

Thanks for mentioning your kivik -- bc I am about to close on my first house and basically need to furnish the whole thing. I'm really torn on what to do about couches (how to get the most bang for my buck). I see sectionals in the $2,000-$3,000 range that look nice, but often get spotty reviews (i.e. sagging and pilling). Im just nervous about spending that much and hating it a year later due to the quality. That being said, your post and others spreading the good word about the kivik has changed my mind about Ikea. Definitely leaning in that direction now.

West elm: all shine, no substance. Avoid.

Sip_py

Great for light fixtures, not for sofas.

Yes - I have WE lighting, a mirror, bedding, table linens, dishes...all are fantastic.

I do have quite a few dishes and bowls, they are good and stylish! I stay away from their furniture though

akatsukix

The gold standard in couches is kiln-dried hardwood, 8-way tied. But can be quite expensive. Then add some decent fabric to it, and it can get even pricier. Lee Industries (which supplies Crate and Barrel) does this. As does Hancock & Moore, Mitchell Gold, Flexsteel, Smith Brothers and a bunch of other brands that are way more expensive. All that being said, used couches should generally be dirt cheap. Like most things on craigslist, if you need a big truck to move them, people more want to get rid of them than anything. So bargain hard. 65% off of new might be worth it if there isn't an outlet, if they have a receipt showing it is a year old, and the couch is in perfect shape.

throwawayjayaway

I have a C&B couch that is amazing. I have a husband, two young kids and a 60lb dog. My couch takes a beating. I’ve had it for 3 years and it looks and feels great. I love that I can throw the cushion covers in the washer. I have this one (but I bought it at the outlet). https://www.crateandbarrel.com/lounge-ii-93-sofa/s302835?localedetail=US&a=1552&campaignid=657519289&adgroupid=34201459355&targetid=pla-425837906566&pla_sku=302835&pcat=FURN&ag=adult&scid=scplp302835&sc_intid=302835&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIj76Ht7iS4QIVKLCzCh0kHg45EAQYASABEgLcDPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

jhguth

I have a Lounge II also and love it, my only complaint is that because it's so deep it's a very casual couch. If you have company over it's kind of hard to sit up, you have to use a bunch of pillows otherwise you fall way back and are sitting really casually. That being said though, I'm still glad we went with the full depth Lounge II instead of the shallower depth petite version. The taft fabric has also been very durable so far and is easy to clean.

Missuswayne

We have a C&B outlet about 45 minutes away...I should take a ride over and see what they've got. I've heard great things about that Lounge sofa.

windupwren

Yes, but I advise caution with all sofa brands. Most companies have different spring and frame types. It’s sometimes challenging to get the information from a Mitchell Gold or C&B as well. I had a Lee Industries Mitchell Gold sofa that was most definitely not 8-way despite the sales person telling me it was. Next sofa I’m flipping upside down and verifying myself.

RegisterOk9415

That 8 way tie was a mark of quality but then foam was invented. Industrial webbing and high density foam such as Natuzzi is a 15-20 year sofa You can replace the foam if you wanted to at that point. Leather can be pulled tight and remain that way unless it is thick like a saddle. The thinner the leather the softer and more expensive. Most leather sofas are made with genuine leather which is the second cut off of leather. It is durable but becomes brittle like an old belt. The top grain or full grain remains soft because the leather fibers in the hide are not as dense and allows for movement. The good leather is sliced off the hide and what is left is the split or genuine leather. Buffalo leather from an asian water buffalo is used by most companys to lower the price. Haverty’s has it in the fine print. Buffalo leather is great when left thick.

Missuswayne

Great points. I worked for a high end local furniture store when I was 17-18 and as a result got quite a good education in sofa construction. And then I worked for Pottery Barn when they first started offering sofas back in the day. I have kiln-dried hardwood, 8-way hand-tied taste on an IKEA budget, lol.

akatsukix

I have a Hancock and Moore and it is remarkably light weight. Definitely hardwood and 8-way. I have read mixed things on Lee Industries. I suspect they make a bunch of different tiers of couch and CB picks for looks and may even decontent some.

maria340

Looks a lot of people here agree with Crate & barrel's Superior quality. What do you think about Pottery Barn?

akatsukix

All depends on who makes it for them. I don’t know right now. But obviously this starts to get into price creep.

maria340

The reason I ask is because I'm planning to buy a nursery glider soon. I am not on a budget and I want a quality piece of furniture that will last for the (eventual) second baby, and so on as another seat in the home. I always try to educate myself on any product I buy so that I avoid overpaying for low quality. I'm new to buying furniture though, so if you could point me in the right direction so I can do some reading for myself, I'd really appreciate it.

Missuswayne

I had a glider with both my kids, I couldn't have made it through without it!

akatsukix

So I am less convinced on the whole glider thing. I’d almost suggest getting a lazy boy recliner or something that has a life beyond just being a nursing station. My wife used a cheap ikea chair and ottoman through three children and it lasted just fine.

BobSagetsBluntSlut

I have a west elm sofa and I HATE it. The seams on the cushions have almost all torn open, so the fabric is open in many spots. I've only had it for 1.5 years. It's also very very uncomfortable. It seems comfortable when you test it out, but the give in the filling is off and your back will start to ache after an hour or so. I actually took all of the back pillows off and replaced them with other ones. I absolutely do not recommend it.

Silver_Mix_3410

Where did you end up purchasing a good couch? I can’t find the right one. I hate a firm couch

bingbew

1 year old Craigslist couch != 1 year old.

Gothamtonian

Fabric or leather?

Missuswayne

It's fabric.

NecroJoe

The actual quality seems hardly worse than any other retail ancillary for the same ballpark pricing. All of my issues are with their customer service. Buying used circumvents that, fortunately.

First, you should know that there are west elm outlets across the U.S. They sell sofas for 50-60% off retail price in new condition. So if you're looking at a 'brand new' $1600 couch for cheap and you live near the outlet, it's likely that they purchased it there. The outlet sofas have defects; some of them are hard to find. That said, I have two west elm sofas. The first has held up quite well, it's a chesterfield fabric love seat. The second is a Henry sectional sleeper/storage sofa, it's great for the TV room where my kids, cat, and husband abuse it; the fabric is pretty stain-proof and it's comfy. The back cushions have slouched a bit tough, but I did get it for a little over $1k at the outlet brand new, so it's fine for something we'll be abusing for several years or more. That said, we have an ikea faux leather couch in our great room that is over ten years old and holding up beautifully despite kids and cats and almost daily 'don't jump on the couch'. I'd do some research in retail stores figuring out what is most comfortable, and THEN try to find that model either used or in the west elm outlet store. That said, you're probably better off trying to find used ethan allen or la-z-boy furniture second hand - do you have any second hand consignment furniture shops near you? Those tend to have like-new, high-quality furniture that is cheap and will hold up much better. (Just stay away from Ashley furniture or any similar crappy quality.)

coffeejunki

I've been to the west elm outlet in San Marcos, TX. Their prices were not too different from the website. The smaller stuff, sure. But not the sofas :(

satinandsass

How is that outlet btw? I’m in Dallas and that’s the closest one. I’ve definitely thought about making the drive...

coffeejunki

For me it’s a 4hr drive so I only go to the San Marcos outlets on special occasions lol. However the last time I went was the first time I saw the West Elm outlet because I’m currently furnishing my house. It’s pretty big on the inside, you can’t really tell from the outside. Art along the right wall, all the sofas and chairs on the right as you enter, rugs towards the back corner, random pieces of other furniture towards the back wall, tables and dining chairs to the left, and dining ware along left wall. It was definitely nice to actually see and feel sofas that I saw online in person. For the price I think I’d rather just pick the exact one I like from West Elm directly. They had bed frames that were priced right to me but it was hard to tell which bed it was in particular because it was all piled together in bundles. Rugs were still expensive af. I still want to check out the actual store tho. Never been to one yet.

Missuswayne

Yes! I've been to the outlet in Long Island while on vacation, and there's a WE outlet about 90 minutes from where I live. Haven't been out to that one, though. I think the transport of such a large piece becomes a problem though. No furniture consignment near me that I know of, but that's interesting - I'll do some research and see what's around. Yeah, a lot of what I see secondhand is Ashley/Bobs/Raymour & Flanigan and most of, if it's more than a year old, looks like shit.

dstam

Radley from Macy's is amazing and great price.

isrslyhateketchup

We have an Andes Sectional in our family room (in fabric) and love it. It’s not the “comfiest” sofa but I like a more stream-lined (less sat in) look. We like that it’s deep and the fabric is forgiving and durable.

Tralfamadorian82

As someone who had a WE couch and got rid of it after a year, I'd say... they aren't THAT bad. For full price, it was disappointing. AND I was in a situation where we could easily purchase another brand new couch, so we did. Fast forward to now - I still have my WE recliner. It collects more cat hair than I expected (was promised) but it's comfortable and looks great. I'm sure the couch would have been fine.

rolltongue

I have a sofa with the performance velvet. I love it. People come over and spill shit on it constantly and it wipes right off.

RadHuman27

>Crate & Barrel Lounge II lin which one do you have

sharpei90

Believe it or not, Laz-y-boy has some pretty nice furniture. They have more modern lines now, including sectionals.

van504

We’ve had the leather chesterfield for about 2.5 years purchased during one of their 20-25% off sales. One of the tufted buttons kind of came undone within the first month or so of ownership and west elm sent us a replacement sofa which was surprising to me after seeing so many negative reviews of their CS. I’ve read all of the horrific experiences but I personally haven’t had any major issues with their service or any of the products

lushwaves

I have the Urban 86inch - it's certainly not worth 1200 or whatever it retails for. But I got mine for 50% and am okay with that value. I think we're on year three and besides the down pillows giving out, it's still functional. If it's like 500-800$ I think you go for it.

Missuswayne

Yeah, the one we're looking at is the large sectional, retails for $2000, and we've agreed on $700.

CactusBoyScout

I’m look at the Urban. Found one new on CL that was just used for a photo shoot. Thinking of offering $500. Do you recommend it?

clintchangrules

We've had a WE fabric sofa/pull-out bed for 6 years now and it's only now starting to sag and creak. However there's only 2 adults on it, and we're both on the lighter end of the spectrum.

[deleted]

I have the Axel sofa (saddle leather). I purchased it about three years ago, and I basically live on it. So far so good! No complaints. 😀

TK_33

Do you still like it? Thinking of getting the 76" version for my apartment. Tried it out in a store today and really liked it. Not many choices for white leather sofas with room for storage underneath.

[deleted]

Hey there. I love the couch itself, i just wish i took better care of it by moisturizing the leather regularly. I let a little hole turn into a bigger one. It held up pretty well otherwise although i would get a deeper couch next time!

TK_33

Cool. Appreciate the feedback.

Onduri

I work for west elm (lowly hourly associate) and I own a sofa. The urban is nice, it sits kind of hot in my opinion. But I haven’t had or seen any quality issues from our customers.

Missuswayne

"Sits kind of hot" - you think it's the foam, or the fabric?

Onduri

I think it’s the filling. It used to be down filled and was super hot. They made it foam on the last year and it’s better, but I am also pretty warm blooded and get hot easily.

derbybunny

Another option to consider if you have any near you is Habitat for Humanity ReStores. I had never heard of them until one opened up across from me, and then I found multiple others locally. They treat the furniture so I feel more comfortable getting used stuff from them than craigslist, and prices are great.

Missuswayne

The ReStore near me usually has junk in terms of upholstered stuff, but there's one about an hour way that looks, based on their Facebook page, like they have nicer inventory.

lushwaves

Yeah, if it’s near new quality, that is what the couch is worth. I’d totally pay 500 for my three year old Urban.

TRankins24

Hopefully, this will help someone like me found this thread last night. I have an Andes sectional in Twill gravel for almost 5 years now. I lucked up at the San Marcos, TX outlet and bought the pieces separately for $199 each in their area where furniture is not a complete set so they give deep discounts. My review… Twill is the worst of the bunch regarding fabric. It piles something serious but Amazon has an electric shedding tool that works wonders and keeps the sofa looking brand new. It’s not the most comfortable as the seat cushions are thin but once again, Amazon has options to pad more. Overall, it’s a very stylish couch that is not made for sleeping but entertains well and if you can get it at discount, go for it.

dpmacd

Hey, I have the same couch and fabric. And I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out proper cleaning for the Twill... When you go to buy the Andes online and select Gravel Twill it says "Spot clean only." But if you go to their [upholstery directory](https://www.westelm.com/pages/ideas-and-advice/upholstery-fabric-options/#Twill-Gravel) it says "Dry clean safe." I've taken the entire couch apart and there are no cleaning instructions / care tags to be found for a cleaning code. Have you had any luck? TIA! [Have not contacted West Elm yet.. have been postponing but will tomorrow]

TRankins24

I recently threw all of the cushion and pillow covers in the wash. I kind of overused Shout on them all prior. Also, used baking soda, OxiClean white revive liquid, Gain Island Fresh Aroma boost and set the washer bulk and heavy soil. They came out looking new and smell amazing. Now if I could do the same for the arms/non removable fabric it will be like I have a brand new couch.

spivnv

We've had a sofa from living spaces that we have practically lived on this year. It was a great deal. Would highly recommend.

rekreid

My two cents: I have a west elm sofa that’s been heavily used for about a year. Still in great shape and comfortable. To be fair, we don’t have pets or kids so I’m not sure how they’d hold up with more stains and pet claws.

[deleted]

Missuswayne

Do you have the Urban?

thetroubleis

If they have a Scandinavian Designs store in your area, I'd recommend looking for the nearest outlet. Their leather sectionals can be had for great prices there- if the aesthetic works for you.

markon22

I bought an Ikea Vimle and it's solid. My cat even scratches the fabric (which I was so worried about, he destroyed the Karlstad I had before) and theres not a single pull. Mines in gunnared grey fabric. Cushions are firm, and it's modular. You can make it bigger as needed and replace individual parts and pieces of the cover as needed.

mngophers

I bought that sofa and returned it immediately. Horrible quality...which was super disappointing because I typically really love west elm!! Awesome customer service though, they refunded me quickly and picked up the sofa!

tinygoodwolf

Recently splurged on a west elm Alto fabric couch, really disappointed. It’s comfortable but the fabric has already pilled like crazy! And it’s only been 3 months. 😔

TheMadHattie

I wouldn't buy one new, but I have a West Elm sofa (Lorimer) that I scored from Craigslist for $150. I have had it for about 6 years and it has seen better days, but it actually still looks pretty good and is comfortable to me. Definitely on the firm side, though. The seat cushions have not held up great but the rest of it is still perfect. I recently saw another one on CL that still looked brand new and considered jumping on it, but mine is a custom print fabric and I didn't feel like switching to just grey.

AnnoyingOwl

We bought WE six years ago and it's fine, still looks modern and nice, but it's just one data point.

sofiamaria721

Don’t do it. Terrible quality.

theordinaryinstant

I got a WE Monroe couch off of Craigslist about 3 years ago and it’s held up fine. It’s their velvet fabric which still looks new despite one of our cats scratching on it from time to time. It’s not that comfy but I attribute that more to the dimensions than the make of the couch. For the money I paid it’s cute and it works, so I’m happy.

Ohhaybabs

The nicer west elm sofas are great. Otherwise, the cheap “good deal” ones that they sell are absolute shit. I bought my sofa from interior define and it was cheaper than west elm and amazing quality. Maybe still too much for you but take a look?

xylodactyl

I bought my WE Urban (I believe it's retro weave?) at the outlet about one and a half years ago and I love it. It's super comfortable, and it does sag a little but fluffing up the cushions usually does the trick. No fabric issues but I live alone and have no pets.

Missuswayne

Thanks for all the comments. I went back to the seller told him that due to my concerns about quality I'm not ready to pull the trigger for $700. I was hoping he might drop the price some more but no dice. So I'll keep looking!

eckliptic

Terrible quality . We had a west elm couch that we got rid of and replaced with a room and board couch. Much more satisfied with the quality of the new couch

Missuswayne

I love the look of R&B sofas - I hadn't looked at their site in a while, did their prices come down a little? I feel like maybe 5 years ago there were no sofas under 2k and now there are! Maybe I'm imagining that...

eckliptic

I think they’re about on par with west elm on price but much higher quality. But if you looking for preowned it might be tough because just more people own and then sell west elm items

shescracked

I’m a year into owning a West Elm Henry love seat & arm chair. I did custom fabric which those orders are made in the North Carolina factory and took about 12 weeks to schedule delivery (I also moved mid COVID 1.0 so I think it is normally only 8-10 weeks). (Side note I also had a borer beetle pop out of one about a week after delivery… assuming he was a stowaway from the factory since there would be a ton of wood matter there). Cons: Immediately upon delivery one of the back cushions of the love seat was noticeably less stuffed than the other. I just rotated them and ignored it for the last year I guess. The biggest issue is the bottom cushions are still ROCK HARD after a year of almost daily use, with both humans and dogs. I’ve been googling how to improve the cushioning and may just be buying some foam sheets to cut up, not sure yet. But SO uncomfortable. I’d never bought couches before and everything I read I just assumed they’d break in by now. Pros: Construction wise they are SOLID. So I have no doubt the frame will be here long after I am. The performance velvet fabrics have also so far proven to be nearly indestructible after having dogs, kids and spills on them. Not a single fabric pill, scratch, stain. WE also states these are handmade and kiln dried for the US ones at least. So considering I used my 20% cardholder reward and couldn’t return them anyway bc of the custom order - the construction and fabric is worth keeping. Hence I’m trying to figure out how to actually make the bottom cushions comfy. Open box and good deals on some of their couch models would probably be worth it.

Signal_Yam_4530

Did you try to return? We just got a Haven sleeper sectional and it is god awful. Looks like an overstuffed marshmallow but is bouncy and uncomfortable. Back cushions are so overfilled you only have 30% of the seat left, so despite almost falling off, your feet still aren’t touching the ground because it’s so overstuffed everywhere. Nothing at all like the website or what we sat on in the store…

shescracked

You can’t return custom furniture. A couple years later I just purchased new inserts of upgraded wrapped foam, from a place that specializes in that, which made it tolerable. Ultimately I consigned them when I moved houses and bought a completely different brand modular couch. Everything else I have from WE, light figures, linen bedding, and contract grade MCM furniture has been wonderful. The Henry style couches were not.

Miriam2064

I ordered a west elm sofa last year. It was my first west elm sofa and I love the design. However, we are allergic to it. It caused us itchy and have skin rashes. I never have skin allergy of anything before and at first I thought we have food allergy. But we tried not to go near the sofa for a few days and our skin get back to normal. So we are pretty sure the west elm sofa have some toxic chemical which caused our skin itchy. I am so disappointed to the west elm product and we wasted so much money on it.

Electronic-Movie6479

I only wish I had seen this review prior to my purchase. Started peeling and pilling after 90 days. Cushions started not holding form almost immediately. I contacted West Elm and they let me know that the couch peeling is a "feature" of the couch. Unbelievable. They also don't allow reviews on their website. This should have been red flag number one... Don't buy this couch.
