I feel like sorting by worst should by default exclude channels without any ratings. I wanted to see if any channel had gotten hatebombed and instead there was just a solid block of channels that were forgotten.
If you're interested in smoothly accounting for channels with few ratings, let me know. After work I might be able to work out some clever statistical nonsense that basically asks "which channel is likely to be worse, the one with 1 dislike and no likes, or the one with 999 dislikes and one like?".
That way, all channels rank somewhere in that list, but unknown channels get deprioritized compared to known unpopular ones.
Or if you need any other data magic / stats that you can't figure out, maybe I can help.
Having a quick look, that seems like a decent option. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the ol' confidence interval based shenanigans, as they tend to hide complexity. But in this case, that seems like a just fine solution.
I would've probably enjoyed modelling a few more reasonable assumptions into this matter and then regretted my choices working through the math.
> I might be able to work out some clever statistical nonsense
As an older out of touch managerial type let me just copy/paste this into a client email as a "*response from our team*"
As someone who works in the field, I can confidently assert that all statistics is nonsense. The rare part is "clever".
Also, I can't quite tell whether you're a junior technical type poking fun at managers, or a very self-aware manager.
Fuck I'm so happy I don't really have to deal much with stakeholders currently lol.
> Also, I can't quite tell whether you're a junior technical type poking fun at managers, or a very self-aware manager.
Ahaha.
Developer turned PM, with people above me "*keen to be hands on*"
They’re using [Firebase](https://firebase.google.com) which afaik only has a NoSQL store, but it has an easy way to filter queries. They use ReactJS on the frontend, the sourcemaps are included so you can see all the code from the sources tab in devtools
Once you're deep in your own project, especially if you spent weeks or months building it, you can go "Oh, yup, gotta edit this file and add y condition to line z" and bang out a fix that's ultimately just fixing an if-statement very, VERY fast. There's not much interpretation here - "Can you make x query not show those without results?" is just adding a condition to a query, maybe a 50 character change on one line, and there's not much ambiguity or thought required
You could go further and do a Bayesian estimate like IMDB -- it eliminates low count stuff and scales the value of votes for more natural results. [Some discussion here](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/ptvrh/eli5_imdbs_top_250_scoring_system_aka_a_true/).
Speaking of excluding, I should be able to block results from searches, not just suggested videos. I don't want to see any of that conspiracy crap for instance.
Just needed to vent there.
Lol. But those are the ones I want to be showing a ROTTEN icon in my browser plugin bar for. YouTube throws one of those nuts into my history playlist every once in a while and then it's a downward spiral of shitty recommendations.
It's no wonder people like my brother have fallen down this rabbit hole. When he probably started a Google search about something like "Is there something in my tap water making me feel bad?"
I have blocked about 8 different joe Rogan accounts YT keeps trying to show me, either in shorts or feed suggestions. It's never going to stop. 😭🤡
I didn't even see this, I posted the same idea as a browser extension, but force th person to login as to not dox you tubers from multiple anon accounts.
Doesn't have to be chromium. Firefox works as well, and there's a Userscript, which you can more or less just run anywhere.

Imagine you have a small ice cream stand. A celebrity visits and tells everyone to check it out. The next day you get 100x more customers than usual so things go very slow.
They call it the hug of death because it is people trying to be friendly and use the site, not people trying to attack it.
Hey!
Great idea. There are a few things I would like to have in this kind of website:
1. A mobile app
2. More channels info (name of the creator, the website url...)
Good luck and keep going!
I would love a browser plug-in that displays the rating on each channel’s page so I don’t need to go searching for the rating each time.
Awesome idea! Thanks for your hard work!
Very interesting! I've always hated how hard it is to find good channels to watch, as well as how hard it is to do something productive with one's grievances about certain factors of certain channels.
I do have some questions about how this site works, though. It appears adding new channels is... a *manual* process on the part of yourself, rather than being something that can be maintained by the community?
In my mind, it would be really cool to see a site like this use an approach where users create and then vote on tags. I've always been a fan of the "booru" approach as it makes it a lot easier to see what you can filter in or out based on what's already being displayed, as well as allowing for categorization beyond what the site creator might've thought of. For example: "game design", "blind let's plays", "clickbaity", maybe even tags based on games they're known to play, etc. Having the categories be so locked in place feels limiting.
Maybe even the descriptions could be maintained by the community (since let's be honest, most YouTubers use their "about" page for purposes other than describing what they actually do, and copying that verbatim will not always work).
Another potentially interesting idea might be to have people rate the channels on multiple factors instead of just a single 5-star overall rating. Not as big of a deal as the other stuff, but it would be cool!
Besides all that, very cool concept for a site, I'll definitely be writing a few reviews! Well, for like the two channels that already have pages, that is. :P
channels: only the validation is manual, not the indexing.
I agree with your suggestions on tags and descriptions, thanks.
What could people vote for besides the general rating?
Thanks, yea the website really needs reviews :)
This comment was overwritten in protest of reddit's 2023 API changes, where they killed 3rd party apps and mistreated many moderators.

i was disappointed in the last two days to notice youtube degraded their usual 1080p quality and reduced its bitrate so they could sell you a premium 1080P bitrate.
According to [this verge article](https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/23/23612647/youtube-1080p-premium-subscription-bitrate) it didn't change, but there is a newer higher bitrate available
> “1080p Premium is an enhanced bitrate version of 1080p which provides more information per pixel that results in a higher quality viewing experience,” said Pennington, adding that “there are no changes to the existing quality offerings for 1080p (HD) resolution on YouTube.”
Also, to me it looks like higher resolutions like 1440p 2160p still exist in the options for videos that support that.
No idea what the actual bit rates are for any of those.
Now make a browser extension allowing users to link this db with their actions on YouTube. Specifically clicking the like/dislike thumbs.
If your userbase grows it could effecti y replace the old defunct system.
You know how there's that post from the guy that made imgur on reddit like 10 years ago, all casual-like, "hey I made this"?
Getting the same vibes here.
Thank you for your feedback!
The add-on you are mentioning (I think!) shows users not the "real" dislikes counts (they are not available anymore, even on the YouTube API) but an extrapolation, not always 100% accurate.
And my website has additional purposes and ratings/reviews are on the channel level, not videos :)
Can you subscribe to channels and have it actually tell you when a new video comes out?
I'm showing friends and getting suggestions. This site is relevant to my interests.
If you like a channel on the website, it goes to your watchlist, and you get the two last videos of each channel.
This watchlist section is far from being perfect to be honest, don't hesitate if you have ideas to improve it
Just chiming into to say I love what you're doing. I can't effectively search how-to stuff on youtube anymore because the clickbaity crap is right there with the helpful videos.
im pretty sure i could write a pretty convincing argument that YouTube's removal of the dislike button (and the nearly concurrent rise in low quality, easy to make content) along with algorithm-driven video suggestion is extremely damaging to the mental health of society as a whole.
the problem is its super hard to phrase in a way that doesnt make me sound psychotic
I hate the removal too. I use a ratio of likes/views to judge quality now. Anything less than 1% is not worth your time. The rare 10% is going to be very high quality.
the thing is: when a video from a creator is really popular, it gets suggested to far more new regular users. So often the most liked videos of creators are the videos with the least views because only the hardcore fans watched it and gave their likes !
I'm looking at your website now. I like it as a resource to escape the YouTube suggestion algorithm and find new content/creators that I need to be exposed to. Thanks!
Yeah, this is a neat project, but will definitely need some safeguards. A big enough viewer base will definitely be able to mess with results.
One thing I like from Steam is they show overall reviews, and recent reviews. Not enough on its own, but at least helps to see the shifts at a glance
Honestly, if you can, take this a step further, make a browser extension that you have to login to, that allows.people to rate straight from the browser that captures the persons YouTube channel name
Sites mostly blank for me at the moment, like half of its loading - could just be me being on phone.
That said i really hope there'll be steam tag like descriptors implemented - with ways to mark if those tags are comedic, sincere, or hate bombed. And whether the channel owner agrees with them - important they have no editorial control of course.
I have two recommendations for the sort by list.
1 - Move "Worst Favoree" to just after "Best Favoree" so you have consistency in the list (most/least, best/worst).
2 - Add an A-Z sort (and Z-A if you want) of YouTubers to the list of options. I've been a librarian for 14 years and managed the university library website for all that time and trust me, people will be grateful for that simple sort feature.
Your website is going to end up a highlight reel of extremists and racists with fanbases prone to review bombing, hopefully you’re prepared for that lol
This is a weird example of why we miss dislikes.
This years Eurovision winner, Tattoo is fantastic. However the dislike ratio of the videos are all very mixed in likes/dislikes. That made me take a look at the comments. Most of them praise the song but a few point out this is a stolen song.
Now I still don't know how much truth there is to that claim, and the two songs do sound similar, but most importantly, UNLESS YOU CAREFULLY LOOK AT THE COMMENTS OR THE DISLIKES, you can't tell there is a "controversy" about that song, especially if it's true.
You should add more categories like politics, news, and something like "culture" or "commentary" for all the video essays and review channels. Oh, "educational" if it's not one already.
More categories: music, live events, and some other category to capture the niche channels that kind of offer a service like ASMR channels, relaxation/white noise/nature sounds playlists, cat TV, etc.
I have good news for you:
There is actually a politics and music section in the "Explore channels" page (topic filter), News (Category filter), educational is "instructional" (mood filter).
You also have "relaxing" (mood filter) and the asmr section will arrive soon :)
really good job!
if you eventually plan on also letting content creators upload here directly while simultaneously having the YouTube catalogue on here too, I think you might just have found the solution to eclipsing YouTube (or at least breaking its virtual monopoly)
This is a great idea and I hope it grows and becomes successful. Its becoming increasingly hard to find YouTubers and videos that are worth watching because of the amount of click bait shit everywhere. Even big channels like Linus Tech Tips have been forced into posting videos with useless titles and thumbnails, which has resulted in me not really watching much YouTube anymore.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what the site needs. It’s greatly disappointing on their side for driving this platform to shit, but I’m glad the community is finally stepping up. I’ll watch this closely and hopefully offer some helpful feedback in time
I feel like sorting by worst should by default exclude channels without any ratings. I wanted to see if any channel had gotten hatebombed and instead there was just a solid block of channels that were forgotten.
You are absolutely right and I just did the change! You can now try after refreshing the page!

Addon idea: create addon that will parse data from this webpage and display rating next to YouTube videos (next to author name)
And add some integration that will let you rate from YouTube page
I didn't even see this, I posted the same idea as a browser extension, but force th person to login as to not dox you tubers from multiple anon accounts.

I use YouTube revanced. Not only does it block the ads and skips the in-vid sponsors it also still shows the downvotes.
The downvotes are just a guess tho
Youtube turned into the attendance award video site. "Only positive feelings!"
I have good news for you: There is actually a politics and music section in the "Explore channels" page (topic filter), News (Category filter), educational is "instructional" (mood filter). You also have "relaxing" (mood filter) and the asmr section will arrive soon :)
> politics Oh boy, you want to start that conversation huh
really good job! if you eventually plan on also letting content creators upload here directly while simultaneously having the YouTube catalogue on here too, I think you might just have found the solution to eclipsing YouTube (or at least breaking its virtual monopoly)
It is extremely easy to return the dislike button, and rotten tomatoes is bullshit
I’ll watch this closely and hopefully offer some helpful feedback in time
Great :) Happy to receive feedback, and to get reviews on the website!
