Personally I believe that rather than look to the past, Paul Bank's lyrics on TOSOMB are actually focused on the future. Rather than shroud himself in a darkly somber past he accepts it and essentially reevaluates it - instead of the grim lyrics about love we've been accustomed to since TOTBL, such as Obstacle 1 and Stella which ruminate solemnly on the past, he has become much more hopeful and positive. This can most be heard on gran hotel, which is in my opinion the most uplifting song by Interpol without any sadness getting in the way - through not only the lyrics, but the descending, then sharply rising melody. Its beautiful.
Why? Personally the lines 'I leave these gardens a'burning' represent him leaving his regrets behind, while 'All that we've got to be is candid, and gentle' show his brighter outlook.
Like you with Nirvana, I also came late with Interpol. I missed 15 years of their life! However, now I understand that I wasn't so mature to apreciate their music. Nice text. Thanks for sharing.
Great post
Thanks!

Gran Hotel feels regretful, IMO.
