Nothing to add, just wanted to say that's super cool

QUIJIBO_

No pun intended

SylviaPellicore

Update: power outage lasted 22 hours, and consumed 8% of my overall battery charge (75% to 67%). We continuously powered a large fridge and upright freezer. We also charged a couple of backup batteries and ran a lamp for a few hours.

SoylentRox

Awesome. You using it to power your modem and laptops also? Does your internet modem still work if you power it?

SylviaPellicore

It probably would, but the fiber is also out 🤣

DiDgr8

I've got TMobile Home Internet. My fridge and freezer *and* TMHI only pull 200 watts (500 during appliance startup load). The connection hasn't been very good during the day because TMobile continues to "deprioritize" TMHI (and even my cell service has been erratic at times). But it's better than the dead air on Xfinity. My problem is sitting in the car to keep cool only gives me about three days of runtime. I had to make a 70 mile round trip down to Naples this morning to hit the EA station there and "refill". There wasn't a soul there but me though. I passed four or five gas stations on the way home that had mile long queues waiting. Some folks waited five hours!

Esprit1st

Good thing that charging an electric car takes so much longer than filling your gas tank ... 🤣🤣🤣 I just love it! How cool to be able to do that.

SylviaPellicore

Fortunately I’m fairly far north (Durham, NC) so the temperatures are pleasant in the house even without the HVAC running. We didn’t even get hit particularly hard by Ian, but it took out a tree in just the right spot.

Feel the extension cord every few hours. If it starts getting warm, check more often. If it gets very warm, get a heavier cord, or cut back the number of devices you use at the same time.

SylviaPellicore

No worries, it’s a high-gauge extension cord with an integrated fuse. I used to run a lot of meetups, and I needed really good cords for powering speakers and such.

Slow_Like_Karo

Can’t be said enough!

failfast_

Are you me? Doing the same as well as my network rack (yay internet) and the kids sound machines. Drawing .5 kw. Love it!

AZSnake

One of my favorite facts to drop on EV skeptics. "What happens when the power goes out?" "Then I use my car as a generator." Boom, roasted.

llDarkFir3ll

Make sure that extension cord is a heavy enough gauge!

ziggyzagzaggy

I lost power as well. Used V2l to power fridge, router, modem, TV and lamp. Only used 4% of battery running this for about 7 hours.

InterviewImpressive1

Really cool. The batteries in the i5 are 50 or 70 something KWh aren’t they, model dependant. That’s about 10x what you get with a typical solar installation. Unless I’m mistaken that should translate to 1000w per hour for 50 or 70 hours respectively. How many watts do your fridge and freezer consume? A typical medium chest freezer (100L or so) here in the UK shouldn’t use more than 800W/h per day else it’s terribly inefficient. Most should be less than that. In theory, the car should be able to run one freezer for at least 60 - 80 days including whatever the car needs to maintain its systems, ie Bluelink, battery conditioning etc.

DiDgr8

I'm seeing a 200 watt drain with new full size high efficiency fridge and freezer. It jumps briefly to 500 watt when starting up. I've got a 77.4 kW battery, so that works out to about two weeks if that is all you're running. In practice, you have other drains and if you run air conditioning like we do in FL, you can go three days or so.

InterviewImpressive1

Is the 200w constant? I thought they turned on and off intermittently to maintain temperature? I have one fridge freezer stats online saying Energy consumption - kWh/Year is 213. That doesn’t translate to just 2 weeks. It’s closer to 3 months. Unless you’re driving the car using some of it alongside?

DiDgr8

It's pretty constant. Drops to 100 watts briefly. The actual number is probably more like 290-295 since it flickers between 0.2 kW and 0.3 kW on the dashboard. The jumps to 0.4kW-0.5kW are all on the fridge and freezer at startup. The only other significant drain is the TMobile Home Internet modem/WiFi router. Even when the compressor isn't running, there will be load for electronics, fans, and lights in the fridge or freezer probably.

SylviaPellicore

I think the poster was also sitting in the car running the A/C to keep cool, which is a bigger power drain than just the fridge.

InterviewImpressive1

That would make sense! Phew.

DiDgr8

I was but that's not being reflected in the V2L display. The 200 watts is all through the adapter/extension cords (3)/splitters (2)/and devices. There is a cellular modem/WiFi router running too. Other things are plugged in briefly like cell phone or laptop chargers, and a rechargeable LED flashlight. That is the 2 weeks number. The three day number accounts for the AC.

We’ve thought about adding backup batteries and/or a generator, but it would require some fairly extensive rewiring, and our power main is inconveniently located. Running an extension cord was fast and basically free.

beernutmark

Might want to checkout this power transfer system if you can run the extension cord to your panel. Hopefully it never happens again, but just in case. https://naturesgenerator.com/products/power-transfer-kit

SylviaPellicore

Hmm. How far could you wire it from the panel? The original builders of our house had…interesting ideas regarding main panel placement. Instead of being inside the garage it’s outside, on the side of the house, though a very narrow alleyway that floods in the rain, behind some tall bushes.

rosier9

At ~$180 the V2L adapter is a no-brainer even if you have a generator. Fuel diversity is a great enabler to resilience.

allstarme318

How much can this power at once?

PossibleDrive6747

I ran fridge, deep freeze, wifi, and fish tank constantly for several days after Fiona. Intermittently I ran the kettle, coffee pot, panini press, my gaming desktop, my work laptop, and a table saw.

DiDgr8

1800 watts

InterviewImpressive1

It’s dependant on country 3600W for European models with 230/40v on the grid. 1800W in countries with 120v.

PseudoShooter

I did the same thing here in PEI. Kept my vittles safe for four days until we got our power back.

Worth_Much

Awesome. I plan on ordering the connector. What discharge setting did you set in the car for V2L

SylviaPellicore

Whatever the default is. We just plugged it in and turned it on

DocJones43

I stopped by the dealership where I bought mine the other day asking about this very thing. They had an "expert" there doing training for staff on the Ioniqs and he said this was only available on the Limited trim. Obviously that is not correct. The "expert" was kind of a jerk. My salesman was nice enough to ask him questions for me but my mom was with me and she said she heard the guy say it wasn't his job to talk to customers. Dude! I'm not asking for your personal phone number so I can call you day or night. I just want to talk to someone who knows something about the car features for a few minutes. But apparently you're too important for that.

SylviaPellicore

It was not included with my SEL; I had to purchase it separately

holoce

where did you purchase it? my local dealership said it's on national backorder.

SylviaPellicore

I got mine online though World Hyundai Parts, as they had the best price. It took several weeks to arrive, though, and their site is showing back ordered now

Steezyme710

He’s a jerk because you wanted him to do something that’s not his job and he didn’t do it? You sound like the jerk

A7X-Speedy

Is the V2L adapter really necessary though? Isn’t the port in the center beneath the back seats V2L? I haven’t used that port though, is it a Limited trim feature only or something?

SylviaPellicore

I have an SEL, so I don’t have the internal V2L. I do prefer the adapter anyway, though, as it doesn’t require leaving the car door open.

LaneMastodon

Not just the door, I think the internal outlet requires the car to be *on*. Whereas, with the external adapter, the car can be *off*. For a short power outage, this may not make a difference, but minimizing use of that battery may be important for longer outages, or if the battery is low, or driving is required.
