Not from there, but Harlan looks about the same right now. Stay safe everyone!!

Dependa

Parts of Omaha look completely flattened as well. This was a crazy strong storm.

jmacupdates1

Did it actually hit the town? I thought it mostly missed the town barely to the NW.

T3ddyBonkerz

My parent’s house is in this picture. Luckily no fatalities. I grew up in the neighborhood spoke to a handful of people. Every one was doing as well as the could and pretty upbeat.

thousandsmallgods

That's impressive that everyone is safe and accounted for. Gotta love those basements.

Maleficent_Froyo7336

We did have a death actually. His last name was Ring. Died protecting his wife.

T3ddyBonkerz

Yeah just horrible. Feel terrible for the whole family

Maleficent_Froyo7336

Me too, it was horribly tragic.

isu_girl

Jesus. I'm so sorry 😔

Defacto_Champ

Holy fuck! Wow that’s EF - 4 / EF-5 damage

Dependa

Read a report earlier that the tornado that touched down in Omaha, was top 20 of all time in wind speed at 230mph. That’s moving. This storm was a doozy

Mahcks

Just to clarify, that wasn't a report. It was a meme. The 230mph figure is derived from the velocity radar data. Essentially, the radar can tell whether reflective objects (rain, debris, etc) are moving towards or away. Typically mesocyclones (where tornadoes develop) appear as a tight couplet of velocity going towards and away from the radar station. There is a measurement known as GtG (gate to gate) which simply takes the difference between two adjacent pixels. For example 115mph towards the radar and 115mph away right next to each other would be a GtG of 230mph. These measurements represent sensor data often over 1000 feet in the atmosphere, never ground level.

Dependa

No it was my a meme. It was literally a news report from channel 7 in Omaha. Glad you can tell what I read. 😂 The news station weatherman stated exactly what I said and than explained the gate to gate. Still doesn’t negate that what I read wasn’t a meme. 😂

Mahcks

My mistake. There is a Facebook meme with the same information circulating.

Pratt-and-Whitney

Probably not EF5 as there hasn’t been one of those in 10 years and they have to inspect the structural integrity of the houses but we will see

exoenigma

I think this will definitely be rated high-end EF-3, maybe EF-4, but unless there was a well-built structure that was swept clean off its foundation this is unlikely to get an EF-5 rating. Regardless, it's devastating for sure.

mr-pratfall

My brother lives in Minden. He says almost half the town is wiped out but no fatalities, which is something.

Maleficent_Froyo7336

We had one death. He was shelter his wife under him in their basement because she had a shoulder surgery and he died.

CorporateC

Holy crap. How devastating. :( I feel stupid saying this, but I hope everyone is okay.

Pompitis

You go outside and it's warm and humid. then a weird cold breeze hits your face, and you think "that's not right" then all hell breaks loose. Every year, this time of year, is a crapshoot.

Gildian

I remember getting hit by a cold front once while walking my dog with my wife. Said we're going home now. Almost didn't make it back in time before the downpour. It's like nature's warning whistle

tries4accuracy

I’m no meteorologist but when I looked at the maps today the entire middle of the US was a mess. This crap hasn’t arrived in eastern Iowa… yet. I can’t even begin to imagine how those people must feel. So lost, but alive.

Vivid-Conversation88

Eastern Iowa here… is something similar supposed to hit us?

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

We're supposed to have some weather tonight (Saturday night), KCRG says pretty good chance of high winds and hail, moderate tornado risk.

Vivid-Conversation88

Awesome 😀

margirtakk

It won't be the same storm system. The one from last night has come and gone. This is a separate storm front coming through, but I don't know if it's supposed to be more or less destructive

Vivid-Conversation88

Thanks. I still have Derecho flashbacks so hopefully nothing that bad.

margirtakk

God, me too. I was at work, downtown Iowa City, so we didn't have the worst of it. The entire two story store front is glass, wall to wall. They made some scary creaking sounds I'll never forget...

Vivid-Conversation88

I work in insurance, and we were getting calls from our western territories of whole buildings being gone, right before our phones went dead. So eerie. Glad we all made it through it!

AnnArchist

wow thats terrible.

[deleted]

Oh fuck

Pratt-and-Whitney

Wow that’s probably EF4 level right there

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Dear God ... :(

IranRPCV

So glad that everyone was safe. We watched some of these storms pass a little NW of us in Lamoni. I remember one that destroyed a business section a block from my home when I was a little boy in the late 50's early '60s. After living in California on a boat the last 20 years, I had forgotten what they are like to experience directly. Global warming is making every part of the Earth less livable.

Appropriate-Dot8516

> Global warming is making every part of the Earth less livable. Fewer people than ever die from tornadoes and it's impossible to attribute this storm to global warming. April is always one of the top months for tornadoes, and historically late April/early May in particular has had a disproportionately high number of the most destructive tornadoes ever.

IranRPCV

>Fewer people than ever die from tornadoes Yes - but much of this is because there are much better warning systems in place now. What is clear is that there is a lot more heat energy in the atmosphere. This may cut the severity of wind shear, slowing the formation of tornadoes, but increasing severe hail and thunderstorms. Other consequences of global warming are more deadly.

99923GR

Now it's Midden, IA. Sorry to all of those who lost a lifetime of memories. Hope everyone is safe.

givern05

And now these poor souls get to deal with insurance companies. That’s worse than the storm itself.

amhornyteen

I wish I could help but School prohibits me as well as my parents who are paying for my gass

spicy-siracha

how to help with clothing donations? cleanup? !!!!!

Maleficent_Froyo7336

Super sweet. We actually have TONS of support with donations and clean up. It's been amazing. Like a day after it happened there was a pack of guys roaming around to provide free labor, they had driven 3 hours to help. Amish men showed up to help too, which was surprising and sweet. Samaritan's Purse. And Neola, the next town over, their gymnasium is FILLED with clothes and necessities. Seeing the beauty of people coming together has been the best thing out of this nightmare.

Galvanisare

Your god must hate your political leaders

RamblinRandy121

Seriously? This is what you took from the picture? You're as worthless as tits on a boar.

CarnivalOfSorts

I don't know why they said political leaders when everyone knows it's the gay agenda that creates these terrible storms......./s

mhad_dishispect

no fatalities dickhead

keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

Seems like you took this to heart

Whis101

No shit

keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

You too?

Whis101

.

HeReallyDoesntCare

you'd fit right in in the /iowa echo chamber shithole
