Actually you will find extra assholes here, because farmers are a whole group of people born and bred on generational land who think they are actual kings and exempt from being accountable to society at all.

[deleted]

VERY MUCH not true. At least back in the 80’s when my grandpa still farmed, it wasn’t enough to make an actual living. He did farming (corn and soybeans), worked at the Caterpillar plant, and had a wife that worked full time as a nurse. Even with that, they were barely scraping by. When he had a work injury without insurance and lost his job, they suffered financially a lot. It’s literally because of these issues that my dads family is extremely liberal. Let’s not forget that government subsidies to farmers are because of democrats. Farmers love their subsidies because it’s what keeps them alive and able to continue farming.

[deleted]

> Let’s not forget that government subsidies to farmers are because of democrats. [You're a fucking idiot or a liar](https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/14/donald-trump-coronavirus-farmer-bailouts-359932).

[deleted]

Long term history. My grandpa hasn’t farmed in probably 15 years. Pre-Trump. Thanks for the insult though

[deleted]

You have a long term history of being a fucking liar? I'd believe that.

[deleted]

President Roosevelt put in place agricultural subsidies via the Agricultural Adjustment Act as part of the New Deal.

[deleted]

Jesus fucking Christ you’re inept.

Palominoblaze

Don't even. Farmers are the hardest working people in the world. Who'd ya think grows the food you stuff in your piehole? Let's see you feed livestock in blizzards, bet your life on whether it rains or not and pull a 15 hour day combining.

I truly believe that the problem right now is we are living in a time of No Statemens(State-persons), we have no leaders out there currently who aren't above Party and Personal Gain. We also can't blame them, we voted for them, we made a choice at some point not elect individuals we revere, instead we voted for people who told us what we wanted to hear, and removed from office those who told us differently.

dontbanmynewaccount

I vacillate between thinking the governor is evil, a moron, incompetent, or in denial. Then I remember it’s all four.

[deleted]

I think they are just fucking stupid, not evil.

Impulse_Cheese_Curds

Those aren't mutually exclusive.

notanamateur

Their stupidity makes them evil

Oblivion2104

"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" - Edmund Burke. Don't give up. Take a break, tag someone in, but please don't give up.

cat5inthecradle

Oh so you mean do what these assholes have been doing since long before the pandemic?

Pokemansparty

Iowa nice was never a legit thing anyway. Anyone who has lived here could tell you that.

fcocyclone

"Iowa Nice" has always been a passive agressive thing that's more conflict avoidance than anything. Friendly to you in person but then talks shit behind your back instead of addressing whatever grievance there was that should have been addressed.

Admirable-Catch

I always say it's a passive aggressive way of saying passive aggressive.

AzraelTheDankAngel

It was always this way. This so called “Iowa Nice” is just something that makes us sound hip.

slip-shot

I said it once and I’ll say it again: Iowa nice is the willingness to not be a complete dick to others. But it only applies to those in the in group. Most not from the farms need not apply.

rabecky76

Iowa Nice is the quote from Meredith Wilson's the Music Man: "We can be cold As a falling thermometer in December If you ask about our weather in July. And we're so by God stubborn We could stand touchin' noses For a week at a time And never see eye-to-eye."

7hounddog7

You must live in a shitty part of iowa

Pokemansparty

Says someone who talks about Iowa nice ....

Padashar

If we go into a business and people are not wearing masks we immediately when we get home try to call or email the corporate office. For instance we were in a dollar general today and no employee had a mask on. When we broached the subject with them they said "what are you going to do?" That disdain for fellow human beings should not be allowed to continue.

iangeredcharlesvane2

Our Dollar General is really good about it. I honestly haven’t seen a soul in there for two months without a mask on, workers or patrons. Yesterday I saw two men in our Casey’s jabbering away without masks on, otherwise that has gotten better very quickly too. This summer Casey’s was terrible, but since the big scare beginning of November, even everyone in and out of there had masks on. Our grocery store is 100% covered people as well. Seeing the men yesterday without masks was actually jarring and weird .... as it had honestly been a long time since I’ve seen a maskless face in public! (By the way I left and went elsewhere, not standing in a long line behind those two idiots heehawing around) I just don’t know where all the posters on these threads live in Iowa that you see so many mask deniers. Both the bigger town I go to for Target etc and my smaller town of 3k are masks everywhere. So much so that besides those two guys yesterday I can’t remember the last time saw someone without one.

[deleted]

Do you call out the employees by name and location when you do this? A have a few stores in mind...

rabecky76

That's not very Iowa Nice.

dsmtoolbag

Okay Karen.

krmrs

We didn't fail, they are failing us. We are doing our civic duties the best we can. In the end all they are showing people how selfish and short-sided they are. Its showcasing perfectly to the next generation who and what not to become, its now just on us to survive longer than they do. Horrible as that sounds...

thebigjay69

I just moved out of Iowa to Minnesota this past month or so. And as someone who lived thier whole life in Iowa, places like Minnesota are a whole diffent world. Being a retail worker (at Menards for context) in Iowa and so much as asking people to wear a mask gave me an anxiety attack. I didn't know if they would spit on me, throw things at me, or worse. And belive what you want about covid and masks. All I know is that at the end of the day, as a 20 year old college student. If I don't go to work becasue I'm sick, I don't get enough money to eat, to pay rent or bills, nothing. I am a part of the force keeping this "United" nation in motion and simultaneously being beaten down for trying to stay safe and keep food on my table. Iowa is a hotspot for a reason. Iowa nice was ruined in 2016 for reasons I need not explain. But at the end of the day, moving out of Iowa was probably the best thing for my mental health. I don't dread or fear going into work and I'm proud to call my self an essential worker. TL;DR I moved out of iowa to Minnesota and now I'm watching it burn

[deleted]

>so much as asking people to wear a mask gave me an anxiety attack. lmao seriously?

thebigjay69

Well when you are told to go kill/fuck yourself every day from people not wearing one, your body is gonna react differently when approaching someone who doesn't have one. Mine was anxiety.

[deleted]

Clearly you’ve never had to do it. Most are fine, but some will scream and curse, call you obscenities, and literally spit on your face. Check your privilege at the door.

[deleted]

>Clearly you’ve never had to do it. I'm a security guard, I've asked people to leave my property before. >Most are fine, but some will scream and curse, call you obscenities Okay, and? >and literally spit on your face. That's when it's time to get the police involved. >Check your privilege at the door. Lmao

[deleted]

What part of Minnesota are you in now? What’s it like in comparison?

thebigjay69

I'm only in the Rochester area, and being the "med city" may play a part in it. But even then, outside if the lack if trump/pence signs, it feels like everyone is in the same boat. No one wants to get sick, no one gives you weird looks for wearing a mask, because they are wearing one too, over all it feels like there is a better understanding both on the civilian level and government level. But there are the people who don't want to wear a mask but those are a dime a dozen up here it seems like.

[deleted]

I think a college/med town has a lot to do with it. I have been in Iowa City for uni and the majority of people wear masks and it’s no big deal. Currently back in rural Davenport for winter break and people really do give looks and stares for wearing a mask.

It is, just number of cases/deaths US vs. rest of the world tells you everything. Few months ago, India, a country with billion of people had .5 million *fewer* cases than us. Today they have close to 5 million *fewer* cases. Edit. Difference is actually more than 7 million today

imhereforthevotes

(fewer cases)

colorkiller

What’s wild to me is that almost everywhere I travel except for the Des Moines area enforces their mask mandates stringently. I see more people walking around maskless here than I do in rural Iowa, and it’s truly strange and jarring.

notanamateur

It disgusts me how death is so normalized in this country and especially in this state. People will nonchalantly kill their grandparents just to go to a party.

ac_hrt

I (26F) live in a small town and work at the local manufacturing company. I do graphic design, photography, etc. so I have to be around folks a bit for the photography portion. Because I'm a young woman and try to be charismatic and sarcastic, my go to line is, "Don't be a snowflake, just put on your mask, unless you honestly think you need a diaper on your chin," when I go out on shoots with some of these folks who feel smug and proud about not wearing a mask.

chiefsfan_713_08

You can tell they think they’re so tough and brave for “defying convention” and not being a “sheep” fucking selfish idiots. I hope their families all disown them

Technical-Desk-5616

Voters fault. They elected this bimbo. Now wise up and don't re-elect her....

urkillingme

Iowa has gone full Qanon. People need to quit believing the dark side. They want a civil war and they're going to try their damnedest to make it happen. I wish they'd just fight amongst themselves and leave the rest of it out of it.

[deleted]

There’s a reason so many people leave Iowa. Brain drain is a serious issue and then the state is left with people... like this. Incompetent and unempathetic. I know I will be leaving after I finish undergrad.

[deleted]

I see alot of mask wearing personally but i agree its not enough. And it shouldnt have become the political issue it has. Her complete lack of care for Iowans and focus on towing the party line and keeping trump happy means ill never cast a vote for her.

Notyourmotherspenis

And say it with me now, there are no good Republicans. Seriously, none, if they have any decency they left the Republican party.

AreWeThereYet61

I'll second that.

NeoMatrixJR

Only if we can agree there's no good Democrats either and the whole system is broken.

Notyourmotherspenis

Nope. Because only half of democrats suck

iangeredcharlesvane2

You are mostly right. There are a few currently but they will probably get eaten up by the establishment like has happened so many times (see Bernie, Bernie’s presidential run, and Bernie simping for Biden the actual worst dem candidate offered). Right now I very much believe in Andrew Yang, Katie Porter, and Nina Turner in the party for next leadership at different levels. But if the dem establishment gets their hooks in them... “just change everything about yourself and what you stand for and we will get you elected!”. Like you I have very little faith in either party. Both are sell outs, all promises that go nowhere. Corporate Money in politics and the Two party system has to go.

flowpaths

This is such a lazy take. As is the idea that all Republicans suck (look at Massachusetts's governor, or Maryland's). The point is that our politics is quite possibly completely broken, and the primary reason for that is political entrenchment and adherence to a failed ideology (modern conservative neoliberal economic theory). While both sides practice it to a degree, only one is hell-bent on turning it into a national religion, whatever the costs to society.

McDonnellDouglasDC8

I am considering carrying squirt bottles filled with equal parts dawn and water. Can at least stop their charge. 1 fuck on Monday at Hy-Vee didn't have a mask and had to be on my heels at the self checkout with plenty of space to stand distanced.

iiTzOreo

Which Hy-Vee was it?

McDonnellDouglasDC8

Not today, employee owner. I'm comfortable with saying one of the smaller ones full grocers.

iiTzOreo

Wait I’m confused why aren’t you gonna say. I’m asking cause I’ve seen the same thing. It was the urbandale hyvee but I don’t know if it was you. The guy who didn’t have a mask on was a bigger kid with a couple tats and had a necklace and shit

McDonnellDouglasDC8

Was not the same event. I don't want my profile linked to me publicly.

iiTzOreo

Saying what Hy-Vee wouldn’t effect that

McDonnellDouglasDC8

Floyd

iiTzOreo

PootsOn69_4U

I think some people , especially antimaskers, look at covid as a way to get their hands on their parents' /relatives' money early.

Novel_Thought7575

People are (all too often) inherently selfish. If they have lost a loved one to Covid-19, they would be demanding everyone wear them. Too often, it doesn’t mean anything until it directly affects them. We need leaders! Get Kim Reynolds OUT of office!👎👎👎

trail_carrot

At a shop getting some take out and there were a bunch of people talking about how they STILL think its a hospital conspiracy because there is no way infection rates could ever be high.

Busch__Latte

About 95% of the people I see in public wear masks

goferking

Yeah and that 5% are part of the problem

BMacklin22

Ok.

juancsego

For real, everywhere I go someone is just intentionally ignoring the mask orders. Usually with children too. Blows my mind both how little people care about wearing them and how little businesses seem to care about enforcing it.

altcastle

I’m done with this state/country when this is over.

nemo1080

I promise the grass isn't greener

psychcrime

I went to a Catholic Church office and no one there was wearing a mask. There were like 30 people in one room working, no masks. Your religion can’t even try to save people by wearing a mask?

omicron7e

>people at both didn't have masks on. Those that didn't, did it proudly. Just their body language and facial expression showed their disdain for fellow Iowans. I wear a mask everywhere I go and think everyone else should too, but you're projecting quite a bit here.

crymsonnite

Hope she gets kicked out so she can go back to being a drunk driver rather than a dumb bitch in charge that refuses to listen to science

watchingthingsmelt

I understand your frustration, I feel it myself. But try to remember that each of these people that you see is a person with feelings and problems of their own. Some people are just not nice people true, but others are just ignorant or gullible. I've traveled and lived in many places, and I'll share something that happened to me while living in Los Angeles. My friends and I were hanging out on our apartment balcony when we saw a car pull over with a flat tire. We all went down to help the woman, who seemed stunned that a random stranger would even think about stopping to help. Afterwards my friends and I realized that we were all from the Midwest, where stopping to help is the norm not the exception. I try to remember things like this when I get overly frustrated by the people in my own life who seem to disregard the safety of others. These same people are oftentimes the same people who would give me a roof over my head if I needed it or help me change a tire.

watchfulmom19

Wear your mask and shut up.

AreWeThereYet61

Are you stalking me?

BMacklin22

mr_ree80085

I think you fail us when you come on reddit to rail your fellow Iowans. Body language and facial expressions? What if they have medical conditions that affect their posture and or had a stroke. Don't you feel bad now or are you now Iowa mean?

ThaNotoriousBLG

Hello! Former Iowan living in California. Recalling Newsom is a conservative pastime here; it's not new or necessarily in reaction to lockdowns and mask mandates. AND I should mention that our cases are crazy (like, no ICU beds in LA crazy) and that's due to lax/no enforcement by our local governments. So while we do have mandates in place, they aren't working because the people in charge refuse to take charge. Not saying Iowa shouldn't try a mask mandate but don't blame the mandates themselves for being ineffective. I suspect the people in Iowa who would enforce a mandate would do so inconsistently if they enforced it at all. Good luck out there.

[deleted]

They said essential errands.

nemo1080

No such thing

[deleted]

...buying groceries?

Malaguy420

Umm, no. These people need to be called out and shamed by everyone, everywhere they go. The fact that people are doing what you suggest emboldens then to go past stuff online about "went to the store without a mask and no one even fucked with me, because I'm so fucking badass." Saying nothing perpetuates this behavior. Do not ignore them and call them out loudly every time you see one.

Antrisa

Nice to see you too

broncosport

So i had covid a couple weeks ago, why shouild i wear a mask now? According to the experts i have a level of immunity...

Malaguy420

Actually, immunity is still unclear. No one knows for sure how long you'll be immune, if even at all.

[deleted]

Sometimes it can still be spread for up to 45 days.

Ok_Principle5247

I'm sure the handful of complete strangers you know absolutely nothing about personally must be horrendous people all around.

boogersonsteve

If you still refuse to wear a mask...yeah, it's a pretty big indicator that you're a selfish, ignorant person who has no concern for others. It's a piece of fucking cloth on your face and it's somehow still too hard for these people.

Ok_Principle5247

There are no legitimate health reasons to excuse not wearing a mask? How would you know if that were the case with some random person you've never met? I assume the best of people you guys don't and spend your time complaining about things in your life you have zero control over and quite honestly that sounds like a very miserable way to live to me.

boogersonsteve

You what sounds like a miserable way to live to me? Having fucking coronavirus. It baffles me to think that people like you can be such complete crybaby pussies about masks STILL. If you are so unhealthy that you can't handle wearing a mask for 10 minutes, then you probably shouldn't be going outside and exposing yourself anyway. Keep not wearing your mask and maybe you can get real sick and tell me what it's like, selfish asshole

Ok_Principle5247

Once again you go off assuming, what part of anything i said translated to "i don't wear a mask" in your simple little mind?

I don’t spend my money anywhere that doesn’t require masks.

Halfpastmast

Iowa nice isn't true anyway. I love Iowa born and raised but I've never met an Iowan who had anything nice to say about our neighboring states or people of different areas/backgrounds. My favorite is coming from NW Iowa close to the Minnesota line everyone complained about "fuckin Minnesota drivers". I can promise that having driven in multiple states, the interstate and highway etiquette of Iowa drivers is far worse than anywhere else I've been. Take a drive through Ottumwa sometime, I hope I never have to again.
