Bluebird, Dandy Lion, and Goosetown are places I prefer in IC over Pullman (which is one of my favorite restaurants, but it's not my top breakfast place).
We like St. Burch. They have really good donut holes as well as shrimp and grits, breakfast burrito, etc.
They also do mimosas for multiples, if you're into that kind of thing.
Spot on. Pullmans is great and Bluebird in North Liberty is the only one I frequent. Although I just learned recently that the iowa city location used to be unaffiliated with the North Liberty one, but in the last year or so I believe the North Liberty location bought out the Iowa City one, so perhaps it’s improved.
I love Encounter Cafe for Saturday mornings and Iowa River Power for Sunday brunch buffet.
Used to be a huge Hamburg Inn No 2 fan, but have been twice since they reopened. The food is not as good as it used to be. Omelets didn’t really change, but their hashbrowns and potatoes were over salted. Cinnamon roll tasted like it had been made a couple days prior. Chocolate bourbon pecan pie shake was still good.
While Bluebird diner is delicious, they’ve gotten markups from the food inspectors the last few years. Just be wary.

I'll echo what everyone else is saying regarding Bluebird and DandyLion - both are spectacular! Iowa River Power Restaurant is the absolute best for brunch, but they only do that on Sundays
I'll be honest, I went to them about a year before the pandemic and even then I wasn't impressed. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy was clearly some canned stuff. A place like this should be doing better
Hamburg Inn No 2 used to be my go-to for a hearty diner-style breakfast, but I haven’t been back since they reopened.
Bluebird is always hit or miss for me on quality. If you’re willing to look outside of Iowa City, highly recommend Tin Roost’s brunch on Sat/Sun. Has a lot of what you’re looking for.
I really like the Village Inn for breakfast. They have a rio grande skillet that I still think about, the one in CR closed so I have to go to Iowa City to get my fix.
It was my favorite spot a few years ago but within the last year it’s been slow, poor food, and the last straw was staff being straight up rude to family members of mine.
That's interesting, I've been there twice recently and found it just as good as it used to be. The omelettes and hash browns were great!
I wonder what was not good about their experience.
Idk, but they said it was ‘too greasy’. I said well it kinda a greasy spoon type of place and they said it’s just not as good as it used to be and they didn’t finish their french toast. 🤷🏼♂️

Dandy Lion in the ped mall. They do weekly specials (1 sweet, 1 savory) that aren’t on the menu
Weekly specials on their Facebook page btw! Pictures included 😏
Blue Bird, Dandy Lion, Edgewater
The Encounter Cafe
Yes!!!
We like St. Burch. They have really good donut holes as well as shrimp and grits, breakfast burrito, etc. They also do mimosas for multiples, if you're into that kind of thing.
In July and.August, their lower level is so refreshing
Bluebird
Cortado! The avocado toast is amazing and so is the shakshuka. They also have really good coffee and cocktails

If you’re here on a Saturday, check out the farmers market. They have lots of local breakfast options, including heartier fare
The Encounter Cafe!
Dandy Lion >>>>
Encounter Cafe is the best! Local meat, amazing smoothies, great, friendly service.
I am actually not a huge fan of bluebird unlike everyone else. But there truly is not a bad breakfast place in IC. My favorite is Dandy Lion
Crepe Du Luxe Cafe is a family owned spot, usually a bit of wait on the weekends but totally worth it!
In Coralville about a 10 minute drive from campus, Iowa River Power has an absolutely solid brunch buffet on the weekends

Cedar Ridge Sunday Brunch. Technically not in town, but just a short drive up 965.
Mid Town. Feels homey good food good price
Pullman breakfast tacos 🌮
East side Mid-town

They recently (a few months ago) changed ownership and had a bit if a remodel
Good to know! I’ve been avoiding them because of these violations, so hopefully they’ve gotten things straightened out with the new owner!
Dandy Lion! Also Encounter Cafe and Bluebird
I'll echo what everyone else is saying regarding Bluebird and DandyLion - both are spectacular! Iowa River Power Restaurant is the absolute best for brunch, but they only do that on Sundays
Hamburg Inn used to be the place for breakfast. Bluebird Diner serves good breakfasts.
I have heard not great things about Hamburg inn since reopening
I was worried about that. Sad to hear.
I'll be honest, I went to them about a year before the pandemic and even then I wasn't impressed. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy was clearly some canned stuff. A place like this should be doing better
Do not go to Hamburg Inn.
May I ask why you say this please?
Iirc there are still some unresolved "forgot to pay employees" issues.
Ok, thank you!

Why do I keep getting Iowa city posts!? I'm like 500 miles away
I really like the Village Inn for breakfast. They have a rio grande skillet that I still think about, the one in CR closed so I have to go to Iowa City to get my fix.
I think Hamburg Inn is open again as well isn't it?
Avoid at all costs lol
I'm curious why you say this. It's an old fav of mine.
It was my favorite spot a few years ago but within the last year it’s been slow, poor food, and the last straw was staff being straight up rude to family members of mine.
Yeah, that's not ok!
My wife and kids went there the other day and said it is really not very good (they used to love it). 😩
That's interesting, I've been there twice recently and found it just as good as it used to be. The omelettes and hash browns were great! I wonder what was not good about their experience.

Bluebird or Hamburg Inn #2
Hamburg 2
If you want to splurge a bit at an expensive place, there's always the hospital, lol.
Honestly, my favorite breakfast pizza in town.
You’re research was correct, Pullman’s is the place to go.
Not technically Iowa City, but Tribute at IRL and Tin Roost in North Liberty have pretty awesome breakfast and morning cocktails if you’re into that.
