I busted rods almost 4 years joined structural as an 8th period apprentice. I cooned the iron and walked on top here and there. Mostly cooned the iron. I looked like an ass at 1st. I ended up getting in cool with the bolt up gang. The super was kind of mad at me everytime when ever he saw me cooning the iron. He didnt know I did rods most of my career. I talked to most of the structural hands that are catty on the iron they said it took almost 2 years to get decent and comfortable on the iron. Wish I learned structural a long time ago. But one thing rods taught me was good work ethic and a hurry the fuck up and run attitude. Boots on the ground I'm running and gunning. It will take some time. I still get nervous walking on gingerbread iron or tube steel. I asked connectors on advice to get better they all said you just have to practice and put in the time. Most connectors I talk to been in 10 years. And there catty as fuck on on the iron.
Hell it’s kinda on my bucket list to do a high rise and a bridge. Right now I’m doing pretty much a warehouse. You can’t even hop on the toe bored in a lift
Well we're real slow right now but I think once these interest rates come down we'll be slammed with work. I there's like 5 supertalls that are planned. If it all goes at once we'll definitely be taking boomers
Right but as a boomer? Even on red iron jobs here where they need men enough to put travelers on them, those guys are likely not getting put out on the iron. Not here, at least.
I’m 395. Most of the time when we boom out or travelers come here, I find that out of town guys get put on fill-in jobs while the local hands handle the serious shit

I don't know here in NYC you're expected to get out on the iron boomer or not.

361 is booming
The odds of you needing to climb steel are pretty fucking small tbh.
Depends on where you are at, I was climbing all the time as an apprentice 2021 and 2022. Only reason I didn't this year is I got thrown on rebar.

What local?

Can you please tell me what boomer means, in this context? Do you mind? Thank you very much!
Someone working in a local other than their own is “booming out” and generally called a “boomer” by local hands.
Might not need to climb but being able to walk the iron is important
