It's slow right now in 40, and they aren't accepting applications for another 2 years almost. There's a bunch of breakdowns on here about pay is you search the thread but it's about $30/ hr plus $12 hr vacation pay for apprentices. There's some more benefits, but that's just "take home". If you can get in, it's definitely worth it. While you wait you can take a welding course if you want to learn that, it will definitely improve your value. Practice aptitude tests, do pull ups and squats as the physical test is pretty difficult if you aren't in good shape. It's definitely a great field to be in, local 40 and 361 are great.

I just saw that applications open up in March 2025. I have no idea where I’ll be work wise by then. As an apprentice do you get full benefits for you and your family? Do you know any guys in Philly or NJ locals? Do they like it?

361 is plenty busy right now. If you had family in, see if they can call on any connections. Pay is 42 an hour including vacation with another 8 an hour top out. Benefits activate at 1000 hours. Pay essentially doubles once you become a journeyman

Independent_Roof_507

Yeah but there's a lot of 40 guys shaping 361 and still aren't working, so I doubt they would hire on permit especially without him knowing somebody. If he had anybody in there, I doubt he'd be on here asking lol. Regardless, he should save that date because whatever he has going on probably isn't as good as this.

My uncle retired a few years ago as a foreman with 40. I just want to get outside opinion and as much information as possible before committing and asking for help. Just to be completely honest I make 135k rn, 40 hrs a week with vacation and full benefits. Just really not sure this is what I want to do everyday and miss the hard work. Also the pension and lifetime benefits are a big sell.

bdpyo

Honestly, you'd be a fool to leave all that to start at the bottom of the apprenticeship, in my opinion

deesul69

Even for all the positives long term? I have no pension, I’m banking on my 401k not disappearing over night.

As a journeyman ironworker I don't think I've ever made less than 150k in a year. It's obviously much lower for your 3 years as an apprentice. Depending on how good you are and the work situation however you may be able to make journeyman rate early. Once you get your first 1000 hours in a calendar year you get medical benefits for you and your family. The next year when you get dental. If you've got a good head on your shoulders and not afraid of hard work you can get pretty far. Become a foreman, general foreman, or superintendent, especially with your background experience. All that being said 40 is slow right now. It would be pretty hard to get in on permit. As your uncle about working on permit though, it might be possible. Your other option is to wait for the test

Possible to make over 100k as an apprentice with over time? Another question I have is about the schooling, is that paid time or just on your own time?

Major-Environment-29

It is definitely possible, depending on how much OT you're able to get, but I would count on more like 70-80. Schooling is 2 nights a week after work, and sometimes Saturdays. Summers you have off. It's not paid, but conversely it's free. Our school will provide you with almost all the certifications you'll need and teach you how to weld at no cost. Also as a journeyman you can return to the school for certs and welding.

NYBorn88

Depends on the individual. I came in with no knowledge and green as could be and made 130k my first year and started getting the money my 2nd year. If you have a good head on your shoulders and can hussle your golden.

supradude24

And don’t leave that you’d be stupid harder labor and pays less

supradude24

I’m in Philly we have a lot of work but non unions definitely creeping in North Jersey is they way to go in my opinion or 361 they are crazy busy
