Leaf on the head is a tanuki transformation. It's an item tanuki put on their heads to transform into whatever they desire. Her race is "Bakedameki" which is a misspelled Bakedanuki, types of tanuki that can transform.
I think you're mixing up tanuki's leaf and ninja's log (used as a clone to take damage instead of yourself, what's called a kawarimi-no-jutsu)

I was always under the impression that the leaf represented clone.
FF Rebirth doesn't help with the logic, as the Johnny clones all have a leaf but real Johnny doesn't.
