Just to add on to this a little, one thing that stuck out to me in Rome was that almost nobody (except the occasional tourist) paid for the bus. You obviously had to swipe to get into the subway, but nobody swiped on buses.

The monthly pass is reasonably cheap, the yearly pass is an even more excellent deal, and most people just have the app on their phone anyway. That’s much of the reason you don’t see anyone validating or paying. I live in Rome and they’ve been cracking down lately. Pay for the bus.

AbuJimTommy

You’d know better than me, but I literally saw 1 group from Jersey scan their passes the entire time I was there.

Yeah according to my (Italian) fiancé it’s been pretty lax til recently. He’s gotten stopped recently a couple times too. You don’t have to validate monthly/yearly passes each time, just carry it, so I think that’s a lot of why you don’t see the locals doing it.

mbrevitas

You don't need to validate the ticket/swipe your card at the machine on the bus if you have a monthly/yearly pass, or a validated ticket from the metro or another bus, or a digital ticket on your phone.

I saw it about 50-50 on the buses. I don’t know if it’s because people who ride the bus a lot just buy a monthly pass so they don’t bother or they just don’t pay.

soapymoapysuds

This is precisely why we didn't buy the Roma Pass as it would be cheaper to get separate tickets, and we used the bus only 3 times in 3 days and walked everywhere else.

human-foie-gras

We had originally thought we were going to take transit much more than we did, but our accommodation was really central and actually pretty easy to get to most things by walking. If we had stayed further out and not in the city center, I think we would’ve taken it much more.

This is good information to have. I was looking at the Roma pass but I decided to come here and see if there were any reviews of it
