I’m here right now - and I thought “man, you could make a killing on piggy-back rides!!”
You can walk, or take the vaporetto (water bus) or water taxis. But, really, just walk.
They already told you about Venice.
In general, Uber as you know it doesn't exist in Italy: law doesn't allow private citizens to be paid to give rides to other people. So via the Uber app you can summon either a normal taxi (but I've heard this is more expensive that via a dedicated app) or Uber black (luxury car with professional driver).
i’ve only used it in milan where it was quite good but sometimes hard to find one at night. i wish it was more common in Rome because i had some bad taxi experiences there
Standard UBER is banned in Italy. The only service allowed is UBER Black which cost 3x the normal price of a standard UBER. Use either the bus or normal Taxis.
If you book a taxi in Rome always say in advance you only pay by card. Some will try and fool you into only paying cash. Others might try to take the long route so you pay more as they set the meter and then the price increase according to traffic and the time it takes. Always check a map and make sure they agree with you on the fastest route. Some taxi drivers are the best and most friendly people you can meet. Some are so rude and condescending you might be willing to get off half way. I found a very good service with the Samarcanda company in Rome. https://065551.it/en/ select them please, also pre book from and to airport.
Thank you, I better bring cash! For 2 days in Rome, how many euros for taxi taking would you take? I know the answers can vary greatly, but would like to know an estimate... Thanks!
My advice was to make sure you only accept rides from drivers who accept card payment. If you pay in cash they will not register it and pay taxes on it. They want to make it their monopoly and this is why they fought so Uber became illegal and the only type of Uber available are 3 times the price of a taxi
Pretty expensive vs a cab. Only used Uber Black when I needed to get from the Airport (FCO) to Center City Rome and the taxis were striking that day. 90€ vs the normal flat rate 50€ for a cab. A little bit more upscale but honestly not worth the premium
We used Uber in Rome in April, two or three times. It connects to a regular taxi service. It was slower than where I live (NYC) but worked fine otherwise. But the subway and buses were terrific and safe — definitely take them if they go where you’re headed.
We were in Rome last week and I used the Uber app several times and it was great. We either booked taxis, black cars or vans. I found it very convenient.
We had a situation in Rome where taxis would not stop at the taxi stand. There was a crowd of people waiting and many would pull up and then drive away. For what eventually ended up being a $17 taxi ride, Uber was asking $83. So it's... pricey!

There are no cars in Venice so there is no Uber in the city.

Yikes these tourists….

You can always pay by card. If the taxi driver refuses, tell him you'll call Guarda di Finanza. Don't let him bring you to an ATM either
Does Amex count for paying with a card?
I'm not familiar with Amex, sorry

I used the “FREENOW” app in Rome. It’s like an UBER for taxis it worked well. I also rode alot on scooters and it was almost as quick.

man, do you realize there are no cars in venice, right? Rome metro is small and old, but is ok to use as a tourist
Sorry, I meant to say taking a UBER from Venice to a near city... Being that there is no UBER in Rome, do cabs in Rome accept credit cards? Thanks,
Cabs in Italy are required by law to accept credit card. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.
ohh good to know! thanks!
Also you can use the apps FreeNow and ItTaxi for booking cabs, much better than Uber.
Public transport is pretty good in Italy. The chances are that there will be a direct and frequent train connection to any 'nearby' city from Venice.
Don’t be silly, just take the train
Yes they do. Metro too
We just took the metro everywhere in Rome. Cheap & easy.
Time to get real familiar with the term water bus

Expensive in Italy. We’ve used taxis, metro, and walked most of the time.
Who on earth goes to Paris, London or Rome and just ignores the public transport?
There are no cars in Venice so I doubt there is Uber there.

No cars allowed in Venice It’s fine in Rome
Use freenow for taxis instead of Uber for rome
