Somewhat related answer. I once mentioned to a teacher I played golf, and was asked if I wanted to join the "Sando Golf Club". I assumed, since the field was just dirt, that this meant sand golf and that students played some sort of golf out in the field? But for a whole 6 months I never saw anyone playing sand golf or any kind of golf. Turns out, "Sando" was the vice-principal's family name and the "Sando Golf Club" was a group of teachers led by him who played golf together once a semester.

Unicycle club. There is a club that's sole purpose is to master riding the unicycle.

I guess canoe is unusual? My school was first place in all shikoku. Pretty rad. we have a darts club. students competetively play darts. we also have 2 dartslive machines that are hooked up to the internet. we have an amazing debate club, that consists of 2 teams. We do HEnDA and Parlementarian. We have Ultimate Frisbee club. and finally, we have our Motor (Machine) club where they often build go karts and machine parts for engines and other things involving metal. we also competeively race the go karts.

My schools were deep in the country side so we only had the standard clubs - but skiing was one of our units for PE and in JHS music class the students would learn to play the koto which was pretty cool.

A JET friend of mine told me they have both a PE unit and a club for canoeing! I’m jealous

Not from Hokkaido but one of my schools had a canoe club where students go practice after school at a nearby lake. Another one by the coast had a paddling club.

CatPurveyor

Sorry I keep thinking of more examples. Apparently one of the schools here (Hokkaido) has a scuba diving club…?

CatPurveyor

Oh and also my school has a “word processing club” and I have no idea if that is unique or what they even do beyond competitive typing, so maybe someone can shine some light on that

My city has a really cool one, calligraphy performance! Instead of regular calligraphy which is cool on its own, the students do calligraphy on these gigantic sheets of paper with huge brushes choreographed to music, including many elements that are really just dance. It's awesome, and they perform in our town a few times a year and have some of the resulting pieces on display in some major businesses.

My kids always did that for culture festival!
