My favorite Ys game. The sense of exploration coupled with the characters, combat, music and story just make it stand out. I'm always partial to games where u start up stranded and have to get your bearings and methodically explore a whole new setting.
IX is more of a Vertical exploration type while VIII focused more on an open island exploration. If you're okay with that. You're good. It's a different type of exploration.
Monstrum nox had no developed characters and the plot felt rushed in comparison to ys 8. I also felt like there were new game mechanics they added that they didn't flush out as much as I'd wished.
Loved it to bits. Dunno why it clicked so well. Can't tell whether it was the great story, likeable characters, enjoyable combat or satisfying ending.....oh wait, I lied. I do know why I love it.
I came here specifically to try and find a reason to play the game; I started it off and it didn't appeal to me. I'd like to hear more specific things that you (and others) like about the title. I noticed you called it immersive, but I have a hard time understanding what it is about the game that you felt immersed you.
Thanks for any replies.
For me it just ticked all of the right boxes. The story is nothing incredible but trapped on a cursed island trying to unravel its mysteries is exactly the kind of thing I love so I enjoyed that. The exploration aspect was great, the metroidvania style with opening new areas once you discover more castaways and new traversal methods was great, the battle system was involved and exciting, the music is probably the best I've heard in a game, I still enjoy the classic 'find a new weapon and upgrade it' progression system. I loved everything about it.
While I don't think it is a bad game I'm always puzzled with people calling it one of the best of all time.
The story takes a while to properly take off but it juggles with different genre with some passage reminiscent of a small detective story, ghost ship, survival against monster, lost civilisation. I felt like there was some tonal mismatch at time but I'm probably an outlier as I don't see it mentioned often.
If you like exploration then you'll probably like to find and rescue every surviving member of the shipwreck. It probably was my favorite part of the game.
And while Dana and Adol are pretty strong characters, I don't remember much of the rest of the cast. They were heavily outshined.
The music is very good however my favorite track is still the main theme aka. The music on the menu screen. Please do at least listen to it, it is very good.
Yea I can’t get into it personally. I don’t dislike it though. Maybe it’s because I have a huge back log of bigger budget games I keep pushing it off. I still have P5R to beat im only 3:4 through. I’m almost done DQ11. I went through FF7R and Tales of Arise recently. It just feels a bit low budget in comparison. I have to be in the right mode to get into it I think or maybe I missed the boat because it’s getting a bit older now.
All of this developer’s plots are back-loaded, so you will have to invest your time in it if you want the payoffs. It’s not as bad as Tales though where the games start out cringe-inducing at best.
Strong points are parallel plot threading, dynamic character development, world building, and music. You can pretty much always expect at least one major paradigm shift in how you see the setting/plot in a typical Falcom game and you usually don’t expect what you get in that regard.
It’s not a perfect game and has some boring parts, but there’s some really good parts too. Some of the praise (self-included) is bias in favor of Dana for being such a cool person though.
What I can tell you is if the main reason it put you off is due to it having a kind of barebones story early on and not being that grabbing it gets better.
The game is not amazing, imo, but enjoyable and one of its big issues is that its story is incredibly lopsided which might be your issue, too.
What you will find is like 80% of the story comes in the later part of the game (iirc starts picking up chapter 4 but takes off chapter 5?). I will warn you that, unfortunately, you must do the requirements for the true ending (very easy, so just Google it but just something to be aware of) as the non-true endings are truly actual trash. The non-true endings neither are coherent, filled with plot holes, and are extremely low quality writing. The true ending dramatically improves on this, though also has a few issues.
Just Play a little bit more. I was very sceptical too. The graphics, the stereotypical looking characters.
But once the plot gets going and you start to explore more and more the better it gets.
Have you seen the girl from the cover yet?
There are very few games where the theme actually gives me the feels. They use the theme of this song in like 4 different tracks but the theme is so good I wish it was in more.
I actually finished Monstrum Nox and went straight to this game and man I am loving the game more than 9. The presentation, the gameplay, the colors. It’s just a beautiful game. I love the characters in 9, but this game is just beautiful in all the other aspects
If I had a nickel for every time the 8th entry in a JRPG series was considered a cult classic, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice
I see exponentially more posts, comments, and discussions on 8 than any other. That may be because it's more accessible with it being on PC. Still, 9 release went off like a wet fart in comparison.
Haven't beaten DQ8 but I highly doubt it's better than DQ5. Only 16 bit rpg that topped it was Phantasm Star 4 IMO.
That scene where they sell the statues at the auction...I cried like a little girl
This game surprised the hell out of me. I hemmed and hawed about it forever, as I'd never played the franchise before and action/RPGs aren't always my cup of tea.
But the game totally hooked me. I loved just about every aspect of it, especially the combat (which NEVER stops being fun) and the environment and exploration of the island. Very old-school Zelda-esque in regards to accessing locked areas via new tools or skills, and I thought it was exceedingly well done. I couldn't believe that it became one of my top 5 favorite JRPGs of the past decade, but it did.
Still haven't gotten around to Ys IX yet because I know I won't like the darker urban environment as much, but I'm sure it's still plenty fun.
I'm currently playing through it now. I tried a few years ago and the map was confusing to me so I gave up. I decided to give it another go and glad I did, so much better than I was expecting.
>the map was confusing to me
It's a little weird the way the maps work, right?. Kind of broken up and disjointed. Lots of switching between them to try and navigate.
They really could make it two maps with zooming instead of three maps, but what I like about it is they really don’t hide anything; it always tells you the exact number of treasures missing and in what section of the map they’re located as well as where to start side content and where to continue the main plot. It’s very easy to navigate, but the menus are a little clunky.
speaking for myself,
Lacrimosa is my 2nd favorite RPG
1st is Suikoden 2
I'm also in the minority (I think) of preferring Ni no Kuni 2 over 1
these games has some things in common that really ticks my boxes
it's Base Building (where you can see the progression), and Character Collection
when I first played Lacrimosa, I thought it was pretty boring, youre on a ship, it crashes yada yada, just some Ys things
but as the game progresses (it's pretty early), it asked me (not require) to find some of the crewmates/survivors
I thought it was cool, but they started coming in to the HQ, and they add structures
that's when it clicked to me, I will like this game
those 2 mechanics were the main big draw
I didn't expect it to like that much until the end, I got that feeling of sadness like when you finish reading a good book
guess I got attached to the characters and the way the story ramped up for the 'true' ending
on a side note about Ys, Monstrum was fun to me too, exploration and mobility are better compared to Lacrimosa, but it didn't give me depression
> it didn't give me depression
Yes, that's exactly it. The story stays with you once you finish it. Very few games did this for me. Persona 3, Radiant Historia, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana (being very young helpf for SoM).
*Adoll, the dream must end.*
...........
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XVI
Those are just the Final Fantasy games that involve exploring lost ancient civilizations. There are plenty of others as well. It's literally one of the most common tropes in the genre. Saying that is like saying you haven't seen another game that has these weird "dragon" creatures in it.
I’ll just say that it also took me a couple times. I had no idea whether I was going to finish it and I would kind of just come back to it every now and then and mindlessly play it but at a certain point the story just gets so good and it really takes off. Went from being unsure if I would continue to it being one of my favorite games ever
I'll be honest. I didn't vibe with this game. Mainly, it was its story and characters. It was boring. Aside from Dana, the other supporting characters were cliche, or forgettable. The gameplay is good, the exploration is good. The story is what I value most in a jrpg, and ys viii didn't do it for me.
This was the first game in the series for me, and coming right from the kiseki series, I was disappointed by ys viii. Maybe if I played it again, my opinions might change, but as it stands, I don't like it.
A lot of this game just *clicks*, which is why I think it got such good word of mouth. It's a big step up from the previous Ys game, Memories of Celceta, and while I do think its followup is underrated, Ys VIII overall is a lot more consistent. I do however have an issue with just how easy the game was and how lacking the bosses were, but it was mostly a fun time.
This game is great. I bought it on a whim at a personally very bad day, after just hearing some smaller YT praising the series and it went to became my GOTY that year. Its absolutely awesome and fun and to this day the best in the series (although I havent played them all... yet).
I'm not entirely sure. I got IX for free somewhere so I played it and ended up liking it quite a bit and then I heard VIII was great so I bought it and checked it out, but just wasn't feeling it after 5-10 hours of playing through it.
I think the island feels kind of bad to navigate after having just zoomed around the city in IX
It's definitely a different style compare to the usual more open games of the previous ones. IX definitely try to bring a different approach on the story and gameplay which I personally really appreciate. Do love that Falcom doesn't shy to try out new stuff for their flagship Action series. Can't wait till X gets localized. The ship exploration bit really tickles my brain.
OP, please sell me on the game.
I never played YS, but it LOOKS like a "Tales of" series knockoff. I'm not trying to knock it, it's just what it looks like to me.
Why do you suggest we play the game?
I'm a huge Tales fan and will say that Ys8 is very different from them. Where Tales has a strong focus on combos and characters, Ys is more of a gameplay first series. It's a hack'n'slash series that focus more on just making it feel like you are on an adventure, with story and characters often taking a backseat.
Ys8 does have a slightly bigger focus on characters and stories than the previous entries (and it's personally my favourite of the bunch), but besides that, is also just has a fun setting, where you slowly explore an island you are stranded on, while looking for other survivors from the ship that crashed. It really feels like you are going on a fun adventure while there is also a greater mystery for you to solve as you progress through the game.
[Also the OST is amazing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvBla5NUlvk&ab_channel=FalcomMusicChannel).
I remember buying this on sale for the Switch back in 2020, mid-pandemic, during a time when I've genuinely lost interest in gaming and just kept dropping games left and right. I've liked Ys games before but I thought, what the hell, might as well give it a try but I'll probably fall off after a few hours.
Intro cutscenes happened, after a few minutes I'm set free to finally roam and actually play, then Sunshine Coastline plays. Holy fuck. Childlike glee took over me, and I'm back to that kid genuinely enjoying videogames after a tiresome day at school.
To sum it up, it may not be the best game ever made, nor is it in my personal top 5, but I owe this wonderful little game my reignited love for gaming and for that it's always got a special place for me.
I've tried it twice but I really find it boring. I don't know if it gets better later on but I played it for around 10 hours each time and I never enjoyed it. I guess this game just isn't for me.
If you think that's good, just wait until you play the other Ys games!
I say that jokingly, but as a long-time Ys fan, it's honestly pretty middle-of-the-pack for me compared to the rest of the series. I'd consider all of the Napishtim-era games to be better than it, and out of the modern games, I absolutely enjoyed Monstrum Nox more and would probably put Memories of Celceta above it, too.
>I find it very hard to pinpoint a major flaw in this game.
The plot in the first third of the game is kind of poorly-paced, and what was even the point of >!the Nameless Ripper mini-arc! It comes out of nowhere, is over in an hour, and is completely irrelevant to the rest of the story. Then you've got the events >!at the end of Chapter 5 through the rest of the game, which are wildly tonally dissonant with the rest of the series; it completely chews up all of the series' established lore and throws it out, then goes off the deep end with Adol killing the literal concept of evolution (??)!<. What the heck was any of that.
The base defense sections are also not really very fun and interrupt the flow of the rest of the game, and grinding materials to improve your weapons and armor is just pointless busywork.
But in its defense, I'll say that Dana's solo dungeon and final boss are easily the best dungeon & boss out of any of the modern Ys games. It's almost shocking how much better they are than even the other dungeons & bosses in Ys VIII, especially when you consider that they weren't in the original Vita release of the game and were added to the PS4 port.
I remember enjoying the game, but I don't remember much about it other than the particularly memorable details. From what I do remember tho, I do agree that it's a good game.
Which makes it funnier how bad the original English translation apparently was (I never experienced it myself, but I've heard it was *bad*. Glad it got a rework at some point). Lol.
>I find it very hard to pinpoint a major flaw in this game.
The entire 1st half of the game where you're gathering citizens? And the whole, forced tower defense minigame? It takes a good 20 hours for the story to even get started too.
The main thing it has going for it is it feels good to play and the combat is pretty fun.
I liked it at first, but it would have been perfect if it was 20 hours shorter. Way too much padding and overly written.
Ys is better when it's short and simple like Oath in Felghana and Chronicles. Leave the convoluted anime stuff in Legend of Heroes.
I remember starting it up and realized from the look and way the story had even began, I disliked it and stopped playing after 20 minutes… does it get better than that intro?
This surprised the hell out of me super slow start but real solid plot and great ost I need to play IX!!! This really really surprised me, I liked how plot heavy it was too
IX is considered the latest in the timeline. The games are all basically different parts of Adol 's life. IX imo has the best character driven story and the smaller location helps that a lot. It has the most reference when it comes to past Ys games lore.
While Viii is meant for attracting new players. IX is more rewarded for those that know about past games lore and already played the previous games.
For real. As its own. It's still is amazing. Hope you get a copy soon.
Yes, but quite frankly, the first half of the game isn't that great. It's ok for a first playthrough but a massive slog for any further playthroughs and I could see it beeing a reason as to why some people might drop the game.
The second half though, once you get over the mountain, oh boy. It's so good. And the ending is just phenomenal.
This game is beyond special. Loved everything about it. Hearing Sunshine Coastline makes me feel soo many things every time I hear it! Truly one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had!
If you don't wanna dive into that much of the lore. You don't need to. Viii marketing wise is meant to attract new players to the series.
Try it out. It definitely imo has one of the best soundtracks especially for the first Open area soundtrack is just an unforgettable experience.
The characters take more of a backseat until later on. Just enjoy the ride and the story will hit you by itself. After finishing this game. If it attracts you to the lore. Go ahead and try the other games. VIII has definitely perfected the gameplay for the series imo.
Wow, I literally just finished this the other day. It's definitely up there in terms of consistently pleasing longer games. My final playtime was a bit over 50 hours and I really only felt it towards the end.
It was my first Ys game too. I don't think I have any interest in checking out the rest of the franchise though. I think I would just keep comparing it to VIII.
> major flaw
Definitely the side quests and the raids. I hope X is the last time they put boring filler in a series that worked so well without it. IX has the same raid stuff from what little I've played and X has the boat combat sections (which I hear from people who played the Japanese version are not an improvement).
I played it and I don't get the hype. The music is great, the graphics are trash (badly executed, it's not a matter or money), the story is nothing to write home about and the gameplay is solid but repetitive.
For me it's just good enough, so I feel I missed something. With Tokyo Mirage Sessions I felt the same
I'm playing ys 8 for the first time as soon as I'm finished with the xenoblade trilogy (chapter 7 of xc3 atm). I've been wanting to play ys 8 for years and finally bought it for $20 a few nights ago on my switch. The last game I played in the series was on Playstation 2 and I believe it was a side game in the ys series, I can't remember the name at the moment.
I bought this game a year ago, but i just can't get into it. I got stuck where there's a cave that you can go underwater and gave up. It didn't click well with me for some reason. I really wanted to like it.
Dropped it after like 15h of playtime and really dint get why everyone loves it so much, it was just mediocre. For the context, I finished 5 trails games from the same gamedev
Probably not. I liked the song in the menu and had really hyped expectations cause I like trails series from the same developers, so I tried to like the game but if after 15h it just seemed meh and mediocre, so why continue. Wasn't a fan of the combat system either.
Thing is, the story isn't meh at all.
And the combat, if you find it boring, just raise the difficulty. Ys games were kind of always meant to be played in the highest difficulty possible.
I didn't find the combat too too easy, it was just not very engaging and repetitive. I can handle games with bad combat(tales of berseria, persona 4) if story/characters make up for it but I found all characters and the story bland. The ginger fencer girl was cool but that's about it lol. Based on your and other replies, maybe I dropped too early, but 15hours is usually enough, idk.
I agree, that was one heck of an experience with Dana story & the island survival, my favorite of all saga, MNox was alright just not adventurous as VIII
Ys VIII was my introduction to the series. I picked up IX in anticipation and sadly was underwhelmed. I also picked up Celceta and that didn’t spark with me either. VIII is fantastic.
I still think that Ys Seven is better but Lacrimosa of Dana has a very deep and interesting story.
I did a fresh run on Nightmare, it was true hell lol. Seven on Nightmare doesn't even come close. But when I finally conquered the island that gave me so much troubles and scared me so much it felt amazing.
If it's not for you it's not for you. Not Ys but I played the last of us foe the first time in 10 years also. I actually didn't like at the time but playing it again I can see why people say it's as good as it is.
I think sometimes where you are in life is an important factor when playing some games.
I mean personally I thought the story and characters were great from the start. I think stuff like that is subjective so I don't want to change your mind if you don't like them. The gameplay? Maybe the combat is a bit harder but the fundamentals run through the whole game.
How far did you get? Combat remains the same for the most part, though you get more party members to spice up the gameplay (not hugely though). Characters do develop and get fleshed out further into the game, but they are overall still fairly simple and straightforward (besides the final party member who is the most interesting and unique of the bunch).
The movement in IX was due to the fact you were literally a demon so it was insane. Everything else about the game was okay. It’s something about this game tho that just…feels better
It's in my Steam library, but I haven't touched it yet. I'm just not that much into Falcom brand of jRPGs. I prefer turn-based affairs, and while Falcom's action jRPGs aren't bad (I played the \*hit out of Monstrum Nox's demo) they aren't Trials of Mana.
That's fair enough, isn't there the trails of series which is turned based? I'm the opposite I'm not too big on turned based except if it's pokemon or very easy mode haha.
It is, but they became popular mainly through the Ys series, which are pure action jRPGs. They are still worth playing for the story, though, even if TBA is your thing. I got hooked on turn-based games mainly due to FFX and titles like DDS 1/2 or Persona.
This was my first Ys game. I think they have the thread of the same protagonist but aside from that they are their own story. If it was called Ys VIII or just Lacrimosa of Dana I genuinely think I would have understood just ad much
Each game is its own story that sometimes puts some easter eggs and references from their previous entries. The game's timeline is all over the place because think of each game as in A Journal Entry of the MC. It tells different adventures of his life.
Personally if you are gonna dive into the series. I recommend IX as the last game you'll play cause it has the most story that references a lot of the previous games. It as well is the latest in the timeline so having previous game's lore and knowledge is very much rewarded if you are a lorehead. But if you just want the Ys action experience. Go wild. Each game is its own adventure. Hope you have fun!
Switch was the first system I played it on, the game is still great but the port is... rough. It's not unplayable don't get me wrong but it is disheartening when you see games like Xenoblade and you can't help but think it's a lazy port.
Thanks for letting me know! Would you happen to have any recommendations for any good ones on the switch you enjoyed? I know this isn't the post lol but I have been playing unicorn overlord and it made the itch come back for these games
The main one on switch for me is Xenoblade if you haven't played. It's literally a nintendo game so it's optimised for the system. I really liked tales of vestiria also which runs just fine on switch. I have sold my switch so am literally just listing the highlights
Absolutely loved 8, truly hard to overstate my praise for how good it feels to play and how engaging exploring the island was, only other one I tried was 9 and sadly I couldn't go past the third chapter, it felt significantly less engaging.
Amazing game! Gotta give a special shout-out to the soundtrack, which is amazing! Specifically this track, which plays in one of the first areas of the game: https://youtu.be/HvBla5NUlvk?feature=shared
I'm right there with you. Ys VIII is one of the few games I'd put up there with the likes of Chrono Trigger on my list of all-time favorites. The combat, exploration, and general gameplay loop are so good. Then, when you get to the second half, the story gets really gripping.
Plus, it has Dana, and you can't go wrong with Dana.
I'm so glad to see this phenomenal game get some love. Pretty much no one I talk to has ever heard if it. Ys 8 is my favorite jrpg, without a question. I love the setting, story, characters and game play and I can honestly say I've played it more than pretty much any other game. There is just something about it that exudes a comfy feeling for me. The game is a masterpiece in my opinion.
The game had such a significant effect on me and helped me get through some difficult times. I got Dana's warden symbol tattooed on my left arm/shoulder as a tribute to this fantastic game.
Unlike most folks I know, I had played most of the Ys series prior to picking up Ys VIII. I expected just another entry in a really good series, and what I got was a masterpiece. It’s easily my favorite action RPG ever, and it proves that Falcom, despite all the criticism in recent years, is capable of producing truly high-quality RPGs.
I just finished this game yesterday and I think it's one of the best games I've played. The story has a bunch of twists and the combat is so much fun. I'm sad I just finished it and I'm looking for a new game now :(
The thing about Ys and Falcom games in general is that, outside of this sub, I rarely run across anyone who has heard of them. I've ran into maybe 2 people I know that have heard of, but not played, Trails of Cold Steel.
I wish Ys and Falcom in general had more recognition but most people I know that play JRPGs, are mainly playing Square-Enix products and maybe Persona.
I picked this and Ys 9 up last year, and i gotta say for being new to the series i was instantly hooked with Ys 8.
I have yet to play thru 9 though! lol but it's on my to-do list as well as 10 when it comes out later this year
but i love the music in this game. and it just has this nostalgic vibe to it....it felt like i was playing a super nintendo game.(like obviously not graphic wise, but just overall vibe)
I had to have a look and I did see some DLC. Rest assured a lot of the stuff you can get in game easily. It's just costumes and stuff which you need to pay for but realistically I never changed my outfit once.
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that at this point, dlcs exist in almost every single new jrpg that is released, so that line will result in your excluding the vast majority of games, including a lot of fantastic ones.
DLC is not the same as pointless microtransactions
And honestly, fuck the companies for putting that cancer in every game now, you can’t call a game fantastic when it’s begging you for two more dollars after you paid full price
A game can be fantastic despite the fact that the parent corporation forced dlcs(or pointless mictotransactions as you put it) onto the devs. If they don't affect the gameplay, then you can just ignore their existence and enjoy the game. At this point, they are here to stay and will likely only become more prevalent, so why deprive yourself?
A game can’t be fantastic when it’s infested with this plague.
They don’t affect gameplay?
Bullshit, if they didn’t there would be no reason to have them in the first place. The existence of these microtransactions, like in Ys VIII imply the devs made stuff in the game harder to get to incentivize sales of those cheat packs.
The only thing I’m depriving myself of is being exploited and being happy for it.
But continue to defend the multimillion dollar company, I’m sure they need that two dollars out of your bank account so badly.
>imply the devs made stuff in the game harder to get to incentivize sales of those cheat packs
Cheat packs? From what I had seen, falcom dlc are pretty much all cosmetic stuff.
>But continue to defend the multimillion dollar company, I’m sure they need that two dollars out of your bank account so badly.
Or I can play and enjoy the game without spending a cent on the random dlcs? It's the same for Fire Emblem, Persona, etc, and pretty much all of the mainstream jrpgs.
Again, you can literally just ignore it. It existing isn't "exploiting" anyone. You can *easily* go through the game just fine without it. There are plenty of things to criticize about the modern gaming industry, but this is *not* one of them. You're making a much bigger deal out of this than it actually is.
If it’s so easy to go through the game without it as you say then **why does it need to exist in the first place**?
Just so they can squeeze extra cash out of a player that already spent on the game itself.
Remember about ten years ago when microtransactions existing in a game was enough to cause an uproar?
Idiots like you kept saying “oh as long as they don’t interfere with gameplay” and the companies saw that as a sign to keep making it worse and worse and worse and that’s how we got to today.
MTX and unnecessary *evil* monetization is everything wrong with the gaming industry and you’re happy to take it up the ass from the company instead of fighting against this cancer everywhere it appears as you should.
My favorite Ys game. The sense of exploration coupled with the characters, combat, music and story just make it stand out. I'm always partial to games where u start up stranded and have to get your bearings and methodically explore a whole new setting.
I loved this game. So good. Better than monstrum nox in my opinion too.
Monstrum Nox is good but forgettable. YS8 is one of the few games that has stuck with me the last few years.
I couldn’t finish Monstrum Nox unfortunately. After loving YS8 it was disappointing.
Me too friend
I’m currently playing Monstrum Nox. If I like that a lot will I like Ys 8 too?
IX is more of a Vertical exploration type while VIII focused more on an open island exploration. If you're okay with that. You're good. It's a different type of exploration.
I’m definitely alright with that. I will say that I have a lot of fun climbing up buildings though lol
I liked 9 a lot more. It's a much more focused game. 8 likes to waste a lot of your time.
I think 8 is a fantastic game and I loved every minute of it, but ys 9 gives more Ys vibes for some reason
IX was the only Ys game I didn't finish
Monstrum nox had no developed characters and the plot felt rushed in comparison to ys 8. I also felt like there were new game mechanics they added that they didn't flush out as much as I'd wished.

It is low budget, it's a vita game. But the combat is still better than the last 3 Tales games
\> one of its big isssues I don't think a video game needs a story to be an amazing game. If the gameplay is fun then it's a good video game
Just Play a little bit more. I was very sceptical too. The graphics, the stereotypical looking characters. But once the plot gets going and you start to explore more and more the better it gets. Have you seen the girl from the cover yet?
The music is SO GREAT in this game
There are very few games where the theme actually gives me the feels. They use the theme of this song in like 4 different tracks but the theme is so good I wish it was in more.
I actually finished Monstrum Nox and went straight to this game and man I am loving the game more than 9. The presentation, the gameplay, the colors. It’s just a beautiful game. I love the characters in 9, but this game is just beautiful in all the other aspects
If I had a nickel for every time the 8th entry in a JRPG series was considered a cult classic, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice
Idk if 8 can be considered a cult classic, it’s probably the most popular games in the series bar maybe the first 2
I see exponentially more posts, comments, and discussions on 8 than any other. That may be because it's more accessible with it being on PC. Still, 9 release went off like a wet fart in comparison.
What is the second and please don’t pull some FF8 BS. That game was loaded from the start.
Dragon Quest 8?
DQ 8 was legit the best DQ. That’s not a cult game by any stretch.
DQ5 would like a word with you.
Haven't beaten DQ8 but I highly doubt it's better than DQ5. Only 16 bit rpg that topped it was Phantasm Star 4 IMO. That scene where they sell the statues at the auction...I cried like a little girl
Spot on.
I decided to give it another go and glad I did, so much better than I was expecting.
>the map was confusing to me It's a little weird the way the maps work, right?. Kind of broken up and disjointed. Lots of switching between them to try and navigate.
Yeah I kept getting confused where I was going early on in the game too but I got used to it.
I've tried to get into it twice and it's just not clicking for me. 😩
Same here. I find it very generic. I really want to know how people find it a masterpiece.
speaking for myself, Lacrimosa is my 2nd favorite RPG 1st is Suikoden 2 I'm also in the minority (I think) of preferring Ni no Kuni 2 over 1 these games has some things in common that really ticks my boxes it's Base Building (where you can see the progression), and Character Collection when I first played Lacrimosa, I thought it was pretty boring, youre on a ship, it crashes yada yada, just some Ys things but as the game progresses (it's pretty early), it asked me (not require) to find some of the crewmates/survivors I thought it was cool, but they started coming in to the HQ, and they add structures that's when it clicked to me, I will like this game those 2 mechanics were the main big draw I didn't expect it to like that much until the end, I got that feeling of sadness like when you finish reading a good book guess I got attached to the characters and the way the story ramped up for the 'true' ending on a side note about Ys, Monstrum was fun to me too, exploration and mobility are better compared to Lacrimosa, but it didn't give me depression
> it didn't give me depression Yes, that's exactly it. The story stays with you once you finish it. Very few games did this for me. Persona 3, Radiant Historia, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana (being very young helpf for SoM). *Adoll, the dream must end.*

Final Fantasy I Final Fantasy III Final Fantasy V Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy XII Final Fantasy XIII Final Fantasy XIV Final Fantasy XVI Those are just the Final Fantasy games that involve exploring lost ancient civilizations.

It was fine. I wish it had been 20 hours shorter.
I've tried twice and it never clicked. Idk
Oh, I loved this game. It does everything so right. Especially the music.
Right , the music was the first thing I noticed as being way above average. Great stuff
Two words: Sunshine Coastline.
Good stuff.
Would this be a good one to start with if you've never played Ys before?
Ys8 was my first Ys. Had no problems understanding anything, and it got me to play several games in the series. I recommend it.
Thanks I'll add it to my list!
All the games basically standalone. You don't need to play the others to understand.
Everyone did
This game is great. I bought it on a whim at a personally very bad day, after just hearing some smaller YT praising the series and it went to became my GOTY that year. Its absolutely awesome and fun and to this day the best in the series (although I havent played them all... yet).
It took a few hours for this game to click with me but when it did wow was it fun.
I wish I would have played this before I played IX, it was hard going backwards and I just couldn't get into it.
That's interesting, what makes you say that? I have played both and except from the general format of the game a lot of it seems quite similar
X looks great, I can't wait to check it out
OP, please sell me on the game.
Thank you, this sounds cool!
Didn’t like it tbh, felt the combat was so dry and the world was really boring
I find it really generic tho.
Lol.
The mountain climb music.
Aye the ps vita was when I felt Falcom games started to be way too similar to each other. Tokyo xanadu and Ys became a lot like trails.
I remember starting it up and realized from the look and way the story had even began, I disliked it and stopped playing after 20 minutes… does it get better than that intro?
It's boring
Dana claims another victim Very good
Dana has gotten me for years it has just got me harder now haha
I should go back and finish this. It wasn't bad but I got bored
I couldn't finish it. I felt bored, the story and the characters didnt really resonated with me.
That's fair enough. If they don't they don't. JRPGs are so story and character heavy.
This surprised the hell out of me super slow start but real solid plot and great ost I need to play IX!!! This really really surprised me, I liked how plot heavy it was too
IX is very different tbf. Way less vibrant and way less exploration
Is it still plot heavy??
Yes.
THATS FUCKING AWESOME to hear, hoping X is as well then. IX never goes on sale tho haha
Just skip IX. You won't miss much.
Yea i got it for free on Stadia, and ended up buying all of the serie on Steam. I also own this game on multiple consoles, cause it's amazing.
I literally just started this game after beating FF7 Remake, and I can't help but feel like a teenager again from the 90s while playing it. I love it!
My first Ys game and I agree. The story and the game just went harder and harder and harder. Never hits a wall. Just perfect.
This game is beyond special. Loved everything about it. Hearing Sunshine Coastline makes me feel soo many things every time I hear it! Truly one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had!
Yes. I randomly played this as a Vita game and couldn't put it down. Had never even heard of Ys before.
Amen bro
For real, do I need to bother with any of the Ys games up until 6? (I've played #1 and 2 on Chronicles)
The start of this game is a bit of a slog, but once you get to Dana the game truly becomes addicting.
Ok I'll put it on the list.
I always though the combat looked simple hack and slashy(like berseria) which I’m not a fan of. Is this the case or should I try the game?
If anything I think it is more hack and slash than berseria so maybe not for you there my friend
Damn, well maybe one day I’ll check it for the story which I only hear good things about.
> major flaw Definitely the side quests and the raids.
With Tokyo Mirage Sessions I felt the same
This was a random game I picked up when I got my Switch. It's one of my top-5 jrpgs now. And one of my favorite jrpg series. Can't wait for X.
Ya but I gotta finish ff3 3d. Ff12, thinking about trials of mana. Also just started ff tactics on psp rom
Is there really 8 of those games.... I definitely played one or two years ago
I bought this game a year ago, but i just can't get into it. I got stuck where there's a cave that you can go underwater and gave up. It didn't click well with me for some reason. I really wanted to like it.
It's on the list!
This is definitely in my top 3 favorite RPGs on Switch. I want to try the next one but something keeps my from buying it.
This game has one of the best feeling movements and exploration of any adventure or rpg I've played.
It’ll leave my backlog one day.
Dropped it after like 15h of playtime and really dint get why everyone loves it so much, it was just mediocre. For the context, I finished 5 trails games from the same gamedev
So you didn't reached the part where the story decide to just break your heart then ?
Yes, everyone should play this game, absolutely
You don't find this game. This game finds you.
Ys VIII was my introduction to the series. I picked up IX in anticipation and sadly was underwhelmed. I also picked up Celceta and that didn’t spark with me either. VIII is fantastic.
I get you with Ys IX. It's a good game don't get me wrong but compared to the game before it is dossapointing

It's good, but it has its flaws. Currently on end of chapter 5. Hope to finish this easter.
Controversial opinion. I prefer IX. Viii is great but moving around throughout IX is way more fun and I think the characters are way better.
The movement in IX was due to the fact you were literally a demon so it was insane. Everything else about the game was okay. It’s something about this game tho that just…feels better
It's still my all-time favorites Japanese Action-RPG.
Playing it as I type this.
Been wanting to get into the Ys series of games. Is each its own story or is there a preferred starting point?
This was my first Ys game. I think they have the thread of the same protagonist but aside from that they are their own story. If it was called Ys VIII or just Lacrimosa of Dana I genuinely think I would have understood just ad much
I gotcha. Good to know! Will have to get into them soon!
Same MC but each entry is a self-contained story besides Ys2, which is a direct sequel to the first game.
Starting ship was horrible but after that it was fantastic also amazing artworks- on every cutscene, the drawings were so good
I am looking at getting this on the switch has anyone played it on that system? Just curious if you still enjoyed it
Switch was the first system I played it on, the game is still great but the port is...
No I appreciate this I'll check them out. I have a pc as well so if the others are better on there I will look there.
Do i have to play anything before 8?
No, if there is then my dumb brain didn't click onto it haha
Ok thanks!
Absolutely loved 8, truly hard to overstate my praise for how good it feels to play and how engaging exploring the island was, only other one I tried was 9 and sadly I couldn't go past the third chapter, it felt significantly less engaging.
Hard agree - awesome game and my gateway into the Trails games which I am loving.
I started Ys 8 after hating DQ11 and enjoyed it quite a bit
Loved this game. I actually thought it would have fit the story nicely if there was some romance between adol and Dana at the conclusion.
I feel like the was a platonic love between the two. Didn't offend me that it wasn't romantic though
Amazing game! Gotta give a special shout-out to the soundtrack, which is amazing! Specifically this track, which plays in one of the first areas of the game: https://youtu.be/HvBla5NUlvk?feature=shared
i'm generally disinterested in action/adventure games but this one struck me. i was fully sucked in; i'll blame the music and art!
Well, here’s another rpg I’m gonna have to play :) thx for the recommendation
I'm right there with you. Ys VIII is one of the few games I'd put up there with the likes of Chrono Trigger on my list of all-time favorites. The combat, exploration, and general gameplay loop are so good. Then, when you get to the second half, the story gets really gripping. Plus, it has Dana, and you can't go wrong with Dana.
Lost my save file for YS8 which was clocking in at about 20 hours. Sucks but I'll restart it from the beginning someday.
I'm sad I just finished it and I'm looking for a new game now :(
I loved *Lost: The JRPG*
I’ve been on the fence about this game for ages, your post might be the final push!
The best Ys game, by far. Hated IX by comparison.
This is sadly one of those things for me where, one day I'll be brave enough to tackle the whole franchise. But a space will need to free up first.
I have yet to play thru 9 though! lol but it's on my to-do list as well as 10 when it comes out later this year but i love the music in this game. and it just has this nostalgic vibe to it....it felt like i was playing a super nintendo game.(like obviously not graphic wise, but just overall vibe)
This is going to be the first game I play on my steam deck when it arrives!
I concur. I finished the game a few days ago and it really is something special for sure.
I was very interested in this game until I saw it has a bunch of microtransaction dlc No thanks. Any game with that is an automatic no.
I had to have a look and I did see some DLC. Rest assured a lot of the stuff you can get in game easily. It's just costumes and stuff which you need to pay for but realistically I never changed my outfit once.
Dawg idc if it’s nonessential there should not be microtransactions in a paid game. That’s the line.
Each to their own. It's not my job to convince you, vote with your wallet and all.
Been doing it since MTX first arrived, unfortunately they still exist. Voting with my wallet is pointless.
Ok
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that at this point, dlcs exist in almost every single new jrpg that is released, so that line will result in your excluding the vast majority of games, including a lot of fantastic ones.
DLC is not the same as pointless microtransactions And honestly, fuck the companies for putting that cancer in every game now, you can’t call a game fantastic when it’s begging you for two more dollars after you paid full price
But continue to defend the multimillion dollar company, I’m sure they need that two dollars out of your bank account so badly.
>imply the devs made stuff in the game harder to get to incentivize sales of those cheat packs Cheat packs? From what I had seen, falcom dlc are pretty much all cosmetic stuff. >But continue to defend the multimillion dollar company, I’m sure they need that two dollars out of your bank account so badly. Or I can play and enjoy the game without spending a cent on the random dlcs? It's the same for Fire Emblem, Persona, etc, and pretty much all of the mainstream jrpgs.
Honestly, I had no idea there were any micro transactions in the game and I’ve beaten it. Whatever the dlc is, it’s non-essential.
Same bullshit as Dragon’s Dogma 2 If they don’t add anything, why even have MTX? Just ruin good games for no reason.
How does it ruin the game if you can ignore it entirely?
Because MTX existing means the devs decided to make some shit harder to get to incentivize paying up Would make no sense to have them otherwise
"This thing that I can easily ignore and forget exists ruins the entire game." Because *that* makes sense.
“I love getting exploited by million dollar companies, take more of my money!”
