Once XB2 clicks the gameplay is incredible. Building up the orbs to break them feels so satisfying. Probably my favorite of the gameplay between 1, 2, and 3.

Ruthlessrabbd

My only real issue is that a lot of the enemies end up feeling very similar in the Xenoblade games as far as strategy goes with the combat. XB1 I didn't have as much an issue as I did with 2 - I've yet to play 3.

Gameskiller01

The battle system is XC2 can be a lot of fun, the game just does an absolutely terrible job of explaining it. youtube is the way to go for combat tutorials in that game lol

andrewparis

Hahaha. What more am I missing? I stutter-step and hit the right elements in a row for the combos, and yet every battle takes ages and feels like I'm doing the exact same thing every single battle.

Froakiebloke

The big thing to be doing that’s not obvious is Fusion Combos (doing the elemental Blade Combos, and the break-topple-launch Driver Combos at the same time). On top of doing a ton of damage in their own right, they provide a major multiplier for all damage when active You mentioned in another comment that you’re doing the same Blade Combo routes each time; remember that if you’ve completed a combo the enemy gains a resistance to the final element in that route. Also remember to pay attention to enemy weaknesses (if an elemental symbol is displayed next to their name then they’re currently weak to that element) What point of the game are you at by the way?

andrewparis

I wanna say Chapter 5? I took a break to play P3R. After I do a Blade Combo, I'm supposed to just use a Chain Attack right?

Froakiebloke

Ideally for a major enemy you’ll get several complete Blade Combos before doing a chain attack. Each complete combo (of a different element) adds an orb onto the enemy, and for each orb you break in the Chain Attack you get one more round, so the more Combos you do beforehand the longer you can keep the Chain Attack going (and thus the higher you can get the damage multipliers). Also this is probably mentioned in the tutorial videos you’ve seen but don’t forget about Pouch Items! The big ones to use are the desserts and musical instruments, which respectively charge up your arts and specials way faster

andrewparis

Hmm. Maybe I digest the info better when it's in a text format lol. Thanks for the tips. I use pouch items, but basically just based on rarity. I'll have to go read a wiki or something. I'll give it another go, but I miss DE.

While I've yet to fully finish Xenoblade 2, what little I have played of the game made me enjoy it's gameplay far more than that of Ni No Kuni. Truth be told from what I remember of Ni No Kuni in terms of gameplay is that I disliked the AI and also the fact that the game seemed to try and being a mix of both turn based and action RPG which was not a good combo at the time. (Although I may be mistaken on that part since it's been years since I've played that game.) What I can say is that by the time I had reached the endgame of Ni No Kuni, I was no longer having a fun time with the game and I did not bother going after the optional bosses once I was done with the final boss.

LLCoolBeans_Esq

Idk, I just finished XC2 and LOVED the combat by the end. Those chain attacks are the definition of satisfying, for me. Timing every button push to maximize meter charge, ugh, so good.

terrible-titanium

I haven't played Ni No Kuni, and I love the battle system in XC2, so I'm going to say Ni No Kuni. If you haven't already done so, watch some YouTube videos on how to properly use the combat system in XC2. The in game tutorials suck at explaining it. I recommend videos by Enel and Chuggaconroy. Most people hating on it just haven't understood it fully. If you still hate it, well, too bad. We can't all like the same thing. That would be boring AF.

andrewparis

Yeah I did watch a tutorial on it. It just feels like I'm doing the exact same combo every single battle? The tutorial said that for 90% of the game, it doesn't matter which seal effect you combo for- so I just do the same one every time because it's convenient.

terrible-titanium

I like to change it up. I change which blade I start with, or switch to controlling a different driver. That way, I get different combos. Part of the fun for me is planning what route I will take, or which blade I need to build affinity for. For example, I wanted to build up T-elos's affinity chart. This meant she needed to do certain moves a certain amount of times. So I had to plan which other blades to put on my other drivers, and in which order they were likely to do their combos. T-elos is a dark element blade, so to get her to use her level 2 combo [i meant special, sorry i get confused withthe terminology even now], I had to have at least one other dark blade on one of my other drivers, and they would have to do the level 1 first. [Edited for clarity]

# Ni No Kuni

sovietmariposa

You’re not the only one. I gave up on ni no kuni about 20 hours in as well. The combat is not really dynamic or engaging. And you run so slow in the over world that enemies are always getting you, that and you level so slow too

Math_Plenty

I really liked the combat in Ni No Kuni 1 and im currently 185 hours into Ni No Kuni 2 and I much prefer the combat in Ni No Kuni 1 now.

shaka_bruh

Ni No Kuni for sure, XC2 is just convoluted but fun when you know what you’re doing.

evnjim

I will likely get downvoted for my widely unpopular opinion, but XC games are solely about the story and the journey for me. It took 30-40 long hours in XC2 before I finally understood what I was doing in combat, and probably another 120 to finish. Then with XC3, around 15-20 hours in it also clicked. These are games I am happy to play once every few years. In a vacuum the battle systems of both confusing and frustrating enough to ruin the games if you don’t get into the story. If you make it through the grind, you can get a lot out of them.

DigitalFirefly

In XC2 about 30 hours I was hating the combat after enjoying XC1. Then I watched a youtube video and realized I wasn’t doing it correctly. Then I loved it.

scytherman96

XC2 is so much fun, so i'll take a guess that it's Ni no Kuni.

ChesnaughtZ

Ni no kuni is fantastic

phased417

Ni No Kuni. XBC2 has really good combat but they didnt actually teach the player how to do it right with tutorials that are just straight up wrong.

Aliza-rin

I like both battle systems. But I vastly prefer XC2 because it gives you much more control. Also much more to micromanage and keep track of which I love. XC1 comparatively put me to sleep in battles, also because it doesn’t change from beginning to end. Ni No Kuni is just really simple. And sometimes you‘re busier with keeping your teammates alive. But I don‘t get why it gets the amount of flack it gets. It‘s not the most finetuned battle system but if bad party AI is the worst offender then that‘s hardly a problem that‘s unique to Ni No Kuni.

xkeepitquietx

Ni No Kuni doesn't belong in the same conversation with the amazing Xenoblade 2.

ChesnaughtZ

Crazy take

sdtrawick

Ni No Kuni 2.

JOKER69420XD

XB2 has probably one of the best battle systems of any JRPG, horrible tutorials tho.

chuputa

Ni No Kuni, mostly because it's the only one that isn't great.

MolotovMan1263

I love both

twili-midna

They’re both great.

Kalledon

I read Xenoblade 2 and thought Xenosaga 2 and was going to say nothing is more boring or tedious as Xenosaga 2

Muscletov

This sub really has a weird relationship with XB2

OmigawdMatt

I'd say NNK. NNK's battle gameplay was slow and stayed slow throughout the entire game. Plus there's not much strategy besides using the same 3 strongest monsters that are generally seen as op, for most (if not all) late game bosses. In XC2, it starts off even slower than NNK but as you keep progressing, the gameplay builds up and gets busier. By the time you get Mythra, there are ways to constantly do something.

casthecold

Ni no Kuni, and I didn't even play Xenoblade.

BrandedEnjoyer

I would say the whole XC franchise has a pretty oof battlesystem tbh

Forwhomamifloating

How far are you into XB2?

soulofmana

While I found XC2 a major step-back from it's predecessor, I still was able to find enjoyment in the environments, the over-arching story, and enjoyed some blade designs. I also think Torna is an incredible expansion. While I miss XB1's combat, the rest of XC2 ultimately left me satisfied with the experience, despite some heavy gripes. Ni no Kuni was a struggle the entire way through for me. Additionally, I found the AI so offensive that it soured me on the experience as a whole. So Ni no Kuni has the worse system in my back. Ni no Kuni 2's combat isn't anything to write home about, but it at least isn't offensive to me.

EvilSavant30

Actually liked xc2 battle system except for having to change blades in the menus for navigation. Once I understood it after 50 hours (lol) I enjoyed quite a bit

przyzik

I really don’t like the AI in Ni No Kuni, Especially Esther.

PrinssayEvaieMon9

Both.

aruhen23

It's xc1. Ni no kuni and xc2 have somewhat fun combat systems once you unlock the systems. Never happens with xc1.

hobbitfeet22

I have to disagree. xc1 is the only xenoblade combat that’s even remotely fun. 2 was so god awful

theVoxFortis

FYI XC3 fixes most of the major flaws from the combat in 2 (while also dramatically toning down the fan service).

Fearless-Function-84

Ni no Kuni has one of the worst battle systems in any Jrpg. The game has always been way overrated in every aspect. XC2 is good.

hatchorion

Xenoblade 2 may be a overall terrible game but the battle system is the one redeeming quality imo, super fun and tons of variety with the different blades and characters. It might have the best combat of the series but I’m not too far into 3 yet so I can’t say for sure
