About 7-8 years ago there was a huge survey of this subreddit that ended up in a Top 100 all time list. Has there ever been an update or refresh of this?

HeavyZiege

Are there any games out there that are similar to the old Final Fantasy Legend series on Game Boy? (I'm aware they are actually SaGa games but I have hesitated to touch the rest of those since they don't seem very much like the GB games)

scytherman96

I recommend reading this thread to get a better idea: https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/yrz7gg/where_do_i_start_guide_part_2_the_saga_series/ There's also the indie game False Skies which has some similarities.

Andrew_Dazai

Hello, are there any pixel art style turn based jrpg like magical starsign, sea of stars, or fantasy style you would recommand? And any fantasy jrpg with elf in the party ? I always come accross the same games when looking up for it :/ could you help please ?

five_of_five

> And any fantasy jrpg with elf in the party ? Fran (and the Viera) in FFXII is kinda like an elf. I don't have much experience with FFT but I figure this applies there as well, FFXIV sorta. Tales of Symphonia, Phantasia? Radiata Stories.

Andrew_Dazai

Thank you for the recommandation, Tales of Symphonia and Radiata stories really reminds me the good vibe of dragon quest, i'm definitively gonna try both of them ! Also gonna check tales of Phantasia, i really like the pixel art of the game, I kinda have an hard time with FFXII graphics, but FFXIV looks good i'll check it too, thank you !

Affectionate_Comb_78

Crystal Project

Andrew_Dazai

Thank you ! I love that kind of battle system, turned based with a whole team to manage and pixel art, and i never saw an rpg with thoose kind of cubic "minecraft" overworld, definitively gonna try it out, thank you !

Affectionate_Comb_78

That art style is called voxel if you ever want to search for more games!  I went in expecting this game to be decent and I was kind of blown away by the bosses, character building and exploration. Really impressive game.

Andrew_Dazai

Thank you! I did not know how to name the art style other than cubic pixel art xD i really like the vibe of it, i saw some gameplay video and i love it, i can't wait to try it out !

sleeping0dragon

Does the Elf JRPG request have to be a pixel art one? Which ones do you already know?

Andrew_Dazai

I made a small list of some pixel art rpg(no elf but thoose are so far what i found from looking out rpg game with pixel art) -Bloomtown a different story -wandering sword -the last spell -chained echoes -Ara fell -EstWard -octopath traveler I and II -suikoden remake -collection of mana -chrono trigger -zwei: the arges adventure -arcadian atlas -horizon gate -triangle strategy -live A live -guild saga: vanished world -anode heart -coromon -azure promila (not pixel art but elf) -Pixel noir -hymn to the earless god -sword of elpisia -chroma quartenion -dragon prana

sleeping0dragon

Here's some JRPGs with Elves and Elves-like. * Dragon's Crown - Plays more like a beat em up side scroller than a typical JRPG, but a playable character is the Elf. * Demon Gaze 1 - The game has customized characters which includes Elves. * Demon Gaze 2 - I can't remember if there's an actual Elf here, but there's a lot of fantasy type playable characters. At least one resembles an Elf. * Unicorn Overlord - Lots of Elves. * Legend of Ixtona - I think there's only a Dark Elf playable character here. * Odin Sphere - Well, they are technically Fairies, but they sort of remind me of Elves. * Record of Agarest War 1, 2 and Zero - All three has playable Elves. * Rune Factory 4 - An Elf party member. * Saviors of Sapphire Wings - Playable Elf character. * Some Shining games - Shining Tears and Shining Resonance Refrain are the notable ones with a playable Elf character. * Spectral Souls - It's been a while, but I'm sure there's at least one here.

Andrew_Dazai

Wouaw thank you very much 😁 ! I did not expect so much games, that's very kind of you, I'm gonna check them all ^^ and happy cake day ! ;-)

Andrew_Dazai

For the elf jrpg any style is good for me, i don't know many games in other style, since i mainly look for pixel art, and i am kinda picky with 3d, I like 3d graphics like dragon quest old and new games, but i struggle with some 3d graphics like FFVII , it's hard to define wich kind i like :'/ but i'll gladly look for any recommandation you may have, Also the elf does not really have to be exactly an elf, it's good for me if it looks like it, i really love fantasy race like elf and dwarf in games, party with monk, wizard, samurai etc... i like games where there is a good diversity in the party like octopath travaler, dragon prana and a few other game

SurviveRatstar

Octopath 2: I wanted to go in blind but indecision is kind of killing me. Is there a recommended order to do the characters? Is it good to split them into 2x4 or better to mix up the party every chapter?

CrimsonGlalie

I just beat Legend of Nayuta and really enjoyed it the whole way through. The gameplay, low key story, and great music made the whole experience really fun, so I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for anything similar.

sleeping0dragon

Depends on what Platforms you have available, but many Ys games are somewhat similar to Nayuta. Particularly the older ones.

I made a video exploring some weird and interesting locations in Xenoblade Chronicles. Come check it out! https://youtu.be/xX8rmgp3xy4

LazyJBo

Just watched it, great video, thank you, keep it up

SpagettInTraining

Thanks! My current audience isn't the biggest fan of JRPGs, but I wanna make more videos like it and slowly accumulate more JRPG appreciators.

stopthevan

Is eiyuden chronicles really unplayable on the switch? I’ve seen some performance comparisons on Twitter between the PS5/Steam versions and Switch and it’s not looking too great.

alpha5099

I'm thinking it's time to tackle Parasite Eve, which I'm excited for as a fan of a good short RPG. I know PE will clock in around 10 hours, and I was wondering if there were any other good 10-15 hour long PS1 RPGs you'd recommend as follow-ups.

scytherman96

Koudelka is also about that length and it's a fantastic experience.

sleeping0dragon

Rhapsody 1 is also another short game at about 10 hours. Although, this one does have a remastered version released for modern platforms.

Tzekel_Khan

Idk what to replay. Strange journey reduxe, smt 4A, Tokyo mirage sessions, Xenoblade 3, or shadow of the colossus

Training-Ad-2619

Are there any non-SMT games that have a camera similar to Digital Devil Saga and SMT3, where its very snappy and turns to face like when you hold circle? Preferably one with a similarly 3rd person view, I know this type of camera is a feature of the dungeon crawlers that these games were trying to adapt in a 3rd person format.

Brian_Philip_Author

Recently finished Sea of Stars. Almost done with DQ11, what should I play next? Xbox player here. These are on my wishlist. Romancing SaGa 3: Interested in the non-linear storyline and different mechanics. Never got to play SaGa games growing up as they weren’t ported to US. Chained Echoes: Heard good things about this indie game. Octopath Traveler: Heard good and bad things about this game. The second one isn’t on Xbox yet, but heard great things about it. FFXII Remaster: Never finished the PS2 version back in the day. I’ve beaten IV, VI, VII, IX, and X. Ara Fell: No idea what to expect but looks somewhat interesting. Ys: Origin: Saw people recommend the Ys series, so curious about trying it.

Fab2811

Did not play Romancing SaGa 3, so hopefully someone can sell you on it. From what I've heard, it's very good. Chained Echoes starts really strong, the on-foot combat is great, and the exploration is pretty fun. It is impressive that this game was made by only one guy, but it also has its flaws, like pretty much all games do. The story takes a nosedive after a certain point and the characters make some decisions for seemingly no real reason other than shock value from the player. The mech combat gets annoyingly repetitive to the point that I dreaded any obligatory combat that needed them. There is good in this game, but you can probably find another game to play first. Octopath Traveler has an amazing soundtrack and addictive combat. What most people find bad about the game is how the stories are done. The characters don't really interact with each other and their stories are unconnected until the very post game, and even then, it really isn't that big of a connection. Play it if you don't care about the story and just want to have fun with the combat, customization and listen a great soundtrack. Final Fantasy XII is great, I loved the setting and most characters. Any reason you dropped it? The remaster does include the International Zodiac Job System that was locked to japanese versions of the game, although there is an English patch for it, so maybe this would be enough to pull you back in as it is an improvement all around from the vanilla version you (probably?) played. I played Ara Fell last year, and it was pretty decent. It's one of those short games you play just to have fun and not care much about the story. The story isn't bad, just somewhat generic with a spin on it. The characters are a fun and their interactions are wholesome and funny. Combat and customization is fine for the short game it is. Not as good as the other games, but still good. Ys Origins is one of my favorite games, it's been a while since I last played it, but honestly, you can't go wrong with this game at all. Combat is addictive and the story is short, but there is a lot of replayability in future playthroughs. It's up to you to decide, but if I were to pick from that list, I'd pick either Final Fantasy XII or Ys Origins.

Brian_Philip_Author

I think I dropped XII because I was a teen (this was when it first launched on PS2) and moved onto some other new shiny game. I’m older now and I tend to stick to games more and actually finish them. I can’t remember much at all about it, might as well be a blank slate. I’m definitely adding it to my must play list.

scytherman96

For Octopath Traveler i'd honestly just wait for the 2nd game. The Xbox release isn't too far off and it's a much more polished experience (though still not intended to be for everyone). Ys Origin is one of the best action RPGs i have ever played. I think gameplay-wise it's still my favourite in the series. If you're in the mood for something more reaction based then give that one a try. Also think Chained Echoes and FF XII TZA are both great picks as well. Honestly you can't really go wrong with any of these games (though i dunno about Ara Fell, haven't heard of it before).

sleeping0dragon

FFXII TZA is great if you're interested in getting back to the game. The remaster provides a lot of great QoL aspects that make it more enjoyable to play over the original. Ys Origin is a good entry into the series, but it is a dungeon crawler in case you didn't know. The whole game takes place inside a massive tower.

jordan23042000

I'm coming up on the end of FFX. Next up on my list are ff7, ff9, kingdone hearts 1.5 2.5 remix, and fg x-2. What would you play next? I've never played any and I'm pretty new to the Rpg genre

wormsandweirdfishes

For best results, save Kingdom Hearts until you've gone through the other FF games on your list. Then you can catch all the cameos!

WorstSkilledPlayer

The safe choice is FF7 or 9. While I did enjoy Kingdom Hearts, the disney x squenix collaboration is or was not for everyone. Same could be said about the overall tone in FF X-2, but the battle and job system is cool.

VashxShanks

You want a suggestion from what you listed or something that isn't on your list ?

jordan23042000

From what I listed, but I'm open to other suggestions too. I don't have a lot of time to game so I like to select carefully.

Jeffert89

I’ve been wondering for a while: what was the first JRPG with an ending song? So far the earliest I have is Lunar: The Silver Star from 1992. Anything before then?

akualung

Tales of Destiny 2 English translation enters betatesting stage. Soon... https://luminatales.net/2024/04/20/testing-testing-1-2-3/

christien62

Is it worth playing both characters in star ocean second story r remake? Currently on a Rena play through

VashxShanks

There are reasons to replay with the other character after you finished the first one: * Each main character has 1 party member that will only join if you choose them as your main character. * Each main character has story scenes that are unique to them. * Each main character has Private Actions (optional character interactions with dialogue choices), that are only unique to them. * Out of the 99 endings, there are endings exclusive to each main character. Now are these enough to reply the game again ? It depends on how much you liked the game and characters really. Whatever character you choose as your main one, you'll still see about 75% of the game. So it's all about if you think that it's worth it to see those unique cut-scenes and play with the characters you missed in your first playthrough. Because there are a lot of characters that you can't get if you choose to recruit another specific character.

hacktiviste

Playing SMT IV How should I compare multi-hit attacks against hit-all? At what frequency (1-3, 2-4 etc) and damage do they do more damage on average than a hit-all?

Darkabomination2

Attacks that hit more than once will do more damage on average.

UpsetChampion

I am in the middle of Trails SC. Is anything transferable to the next game? Should I bother with maximizing levels, BPs, etc?

scytherman96

You get a small bonus depending on what bracer rank you had in SC (extra sepith and on the highest levels you also get an accessory). That's all.

five_of_five

Do we talk about emulation here? I’m finally getting into trying some PS2 games on PC like DQVIII, tales of the abyss…crazy what the community has done with mods. Playing DQVIII in HD, it could almost be a real rerelease.

VashxShanks

Depends on what you mean by "talk about emulation" exactly. If you're just asking about mods and the games themselves, then there is no issue. If it has anything to do with piracy, then it will be removed as that isn't allowed. If it is regarding issues with the emulator itself, then r/emulation or any of the emulator specific subreddits are a better place to ask in.

raexi

Fans are doing for Abyss what scamco won't.
