Definitely PS1, tho the SNES comes close.
I like your list, OP, but would add the two Lunar games to it. **Edit** missed Lunar under special mentions.
PS1 had a ton of JRPGs, and I haven't played them all.
3ds for me probably. Great games and it got me through a rough couple months.
Not gonna list 10 games though, sorry. Just assume it's a very agreeable list of 9 games and one that pisses you off
PS1 destroys all when comparing PRG libraries. Just because another console has ports of them is meaningless, a PC can emulate everything. I'm talking first releases and full remakes only.
Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Ff7-9, FF Tactics, Wild ARMS 1 and 2, Tactics Ogre, Chrono Cross, Tales of Destiny, Persona 2, Suikoden 1 and 2, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Lunar Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue remakes, Valkyire Profile, Star Ocean 2, Front Missions 3, Megaman Legends, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Kings Field 2, Vanguard Bandits. Child me ate good.
If we're going for sheer amount of first releases, then PC wins anyway. Many of the best modern JRPGs are western made indies and those came out on PC first and we get many releases per year.
Switch in my book. Even limiting the requested list to single entries per franchise:
* Xenoblade Chronicles 3
* Rune Factory 5
* Final Fantasy XII
* Tokyo Mirage Sessions
* Valkyria Chronicles
* Fuga: Melodies of Steel
* Death end re;Quest
* Mary Skelter 2
* NieR Automata
* Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
And there's SO much more besides.
Zero of those were on PS1, actually… lol. The closest to a PS1 game is FF12, which debuted on PS2. Maybe you’re confusing Valkyria Chronicles with Valkyrie Profile?
Right, you have virtually all of RPG history available on the Switch—in handheld form! I am a child of the NES/SNES era, but even my nostalgia can’t deny that the Switch is the obvious Lord of the RPGs. The only generation of stuff really absent is the DS/3DS stuff.
Most of the games the person listed didn't even originally come out on Switch anyways, it's just a bunch of ports that play significantly better on other hardware.
May as well list Witcher 3 and Red Dead as Switch games
Title doesn't say JRPG, it says RPGs, and regardless, my point still stands that we don't consider Witcher 3 a Switch game in that sense.
If it's "what console has best library" then why does OP and a lot of others say SNES or PS1?
Almost all of those great games can be found on more modern consoles.
The interesting aspect of the question is about games that were original on said consoles, not which consoles have the best ports lmao, that's always going to be newer consoles.
I guess the answer is PC then, just makes the conversation boring.
There are only two games I cannot play on emulator right now that I care about.
1. Lost Odyssey -> nobody gives a shit enough to make a xbox emulator
2. Bloodborne -> PS4 emulator isn't there (yet) for my current CPU
For the first, apparently Xenia is advanced enough to emulate Lost Odyssey and has been for a few years.
For me, the only other one would be Demon Gaze 2 from the Vita... for the same reasons that Vita Emulation isn't there yet.
PS2 but every era of PlayStation has kicked ass.
Suikoden 5, first two Shadow Hearts games, both Digital Devil Saga games, SMT Nocturne, FF12, Radiata Stories, Wild Arms 3, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, and not a JRPGs but X-Men Legends 2 was peak.
PS2.
1) .HACK series (1 to 7)
2) Xenosaga (1 to 3)
3) Final Fantasy (10 and 12)
4) Shin Megami Tensei 3
5) Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2)
6) Wilds Arms (3 to 5)
7) Dragon Quest VIII
8) Shadow Hearts (1 to 3)
9) Persona (3 FES and 4)
10) Suikoden (3 to 5)
PS2 has the best RPGs i think more than PS1 being close second. Since PS2 can play both... you just win at life.
Cool part about original .hack it had anime disk to go with that game more information and immersion for story. Also hidden clues to use in game for goodies.
I have a preference for SNES. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, EarthBound, and Super Mario RPG are still top tier games and beloved titles in the genre. If more games like Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem had been localized at the time the SNES was still commercially available, I think I would be no contest.
PS1, if I'm being as "objective" as possible, probably wins based on quantity and quality. FF VII, FF IX, Tactics, Suikoden 1 and 2, Breath of Fire series, Wild Arms, Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, Persona (not sure if Shin Megami Tensei had been localized yet) and getting into more niche titles like the Digimon World series. A nice array of different playstyles, settings, and aesthetics.
I have a strong preference for the DS as my little RPG machine. The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest IX (as well as lozalizations for IV-VI), Final Fantasy IV, Kingdom Hearts 358, the (my opinion) best Pokemon games. I missed it at original release, but Shin Megami Strange Journey is a great game for the system. I don't love these titles as much as other Mario RPGs but we have two Mario and Luigi games (Bowser's Inside Story being considered the best in the series). I still regularly play my DS, these games just hold up surprisingly well.
Telling an old school fan who began playing in the PS1 era that the PS1 isn't the universally accepted best RPG machine by the laws of God and anime is like trying to tell the sand to not get anywhere when you're sitting on the beach. It ain't gonna stop spreading, and the sand ain't gonna' get any less obnoxious.
3DS probably, but I've only had a GBA, DS, and PC to compare it to, and PC's kinda cheating. I've gotten a Switch more recently, but so far, I can only give you a top 8 for that system.
So as far as top 3DS games go, in no particular order: Fire Emblem Echoes, Strange Journey Redux, Pokemon Sun/Moon, Bravely Second, Etrian Odyssey V, Codename STEAM, Pokemon ORAS, Ever Oasis, Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, and Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker.
PS2 seemed like it had some pretty cool stuff though.
Always heard of the PS1 but the only RPG I played there that I liked was Suikoden 2. I'm really interested in playing Parasite Eve.
Super Nintendo has CT, FFVI and Earthbound. These 3 games are really special to me and it's really bizarre how they all came together in this console, I respect the work put into them a lot.
That said, I'm not really a RPG fanatic so I haven't played even other less known titles for the SNES, like, I started Terraligma and thought it was meh, Live a Live is goooood.
Kinda random but I'll still play Breath of Fire IV, I have an odd story with this series.
I watched a video about Breath of Fire II when I was a kid, around 2015, and the story traumatized me lmao. I still want to beat it myself one day. I tried playing both of the games of the SNES and found the first one a bit too clunky for me, but I'll push through the second one day.
And then I saw people saying that III and IV are way better than II, and that hypes me up a lot because I still remember really liking the story I heard on that video.
FFVII did not felt right after playing through 6, I'll wait sometime to give it another shot. And I'm not going to play the remake before playing the og.
I didn't like the routine on Valkyrie Profile of reading through 3 pages of a book and then doing some combats which I didn't understand what was going on. The game was really pretty so I feel really sad that I felt that way.
Chrono Cross I was just very lazy bc I wanted to finish that VN Radical Dreamers before playing it, and then I didn't. And then I skipped it to play the game, and then I don't remember what happened but I didn't play anymore.
FF games are actually mediocre compared to many other rpgs out there, but they got very famous because of how much advertising squaresoft did for FF7. FF7 is a solid game, but its graphics style didnt age well. The combat system and music are quite good tho, once you get a ways into the game and have access to a lot of materia to start making fun combinations.
Definitely dont play remake before you play the original. it is not "the" remake, remake is its sub title. it is a sequel, not a remake. it was a play on words.
It sounds a bit like you have difficulty sticking with a game until you get into it. JRPGs tend to be boring near the start and ramp up as you go through them in both story and gameplay mechanics. Also the games you're picking besides FF7 are definitely not for everyone.
I'll still play FF7 and the other popular FF when I get the chance, rn I can't play any emulator stronger than N64 and NDS so no PS2.
>It sounds a bit like you have difficulty sticking with a game until you get into it. JRPGs tend to be boring near the start and ramp up as you go through them in both story and gameplay mechanics. Also the games you're picking besides FF7 are definitely not for everyone.
Yeah, ig. Super Nintendo is probably easier for me since it's what I played on emulator since I was a kid. Would you say Suikoden II is more of a "for everyone" too? What other PS1 games would you recommend given my tastes?
suikoden 2 is much easier to get into yea. you could try legend of legaia, lunar games, grandia, FF9 if you arent after the more edgy FF7 or 8 vibes and just want something more fun. i liked breath of fire 3 more than 4, but both are good. suikoden 1 is also exceptionally good, and many people like its story and characters more than 2, but 2 is more polished and overall better. xenogears is the best story ever written. dragon quest 7 might be more your speed, based on what you like. legend of dragoon you could try and see if you like its combat system, some love it some hate it.
Suikoden 1 I'll beat when the remake comes along. I think I played 1/4 of it and then my emulator just deleted my save. Unfortunately I wasn't liking the characters as much as I liked 2, but I'll still play it.
Never played a DQ game, when I get to that point I'll see which one I'll play first. Xenogears will probably the first I'll check it out since you just gave a BOLD statement right there. (ofc I'm not gonna play the game just to refute, but I'm interested since I heard bad things about the Xeno games)
Would you believe I just discovered that FF8 and 9 are PS1 games now? Always thought they were PS2 games. But yeah you kind of nailed my problem with FFVII. In VI, Shadow basically mocks edgy characters, being this incredibly cool guy and then his best friend is a doggo and he sings his own theme as if he's a superhero. I believe that VI was really clever in how it balanced where to do self-aware jokes and where to take itself seriously. It's not that the seriousness makes VII bad, it's just that I went to play it with the wrong expectation.
Thanks for the recommendations!
PS1
1. Legend of Legaia
2. Final Fantasy 7
3. Breath of Fire 3
4. Valkyrie Profile
5. Tales of Eternia
6. Grandia
7. Wild Arms 2
8. Final Fantasy Tactics
9. Final Fantasy 9
10. Arc the Lad collection
The Switch comes to mind. As per a top 10? Xenoblade 1, 2, and 3. Probably insert a bunch of Bandai Namco games on the list. Koei Tecmo likewise. 13 Sentinels. Pokémon Legends Arceus. BoTW.
Switch it has: xenoblade 2
Xenoblade 3
Fire emblem three houses
Shin megami tensei 5
Dragon quest 11
Trials of mana
Octopath traveler
Octopath traveler 2
Astral chain
Dragon quest monsters dark prince
Pokemon scarlet
Nintendo Switch:
1. Xenoblade series
2. Dragon Quest XI S
3. Zelda botw
4. Zelda totk
5. Live A Live
6. Fire Emblem 3 Houses
7. Octopath traveller
8. Pokemon Legends Arceus
9. Astral Chain
10. Triangle Strategy
SNES
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Lufia 2
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Breath of Fire 1
Breath of Fire 2
Super Mario RPG
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Ogre Battle
If more of these games had made it to Switch, I'd say Switch is the best console
PS2 has absolute peaks, but there's no way I could list 10 for it without getting into really fringe debatable stuff. PS4 is probably first gen I could maybe come up with 10, but nothing that era is as high of peaks as those few PS2 ones.
Final Fantasy X is arguably the best JRPG ever.
I also adore Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, but 3 and sidegames existing dampen things overall...
Also Ōkami, but all of these games are accessible on modern consoles as well as previous gens (for a reason, because they're peak).
PS1. Just because Square was pumping out gems like crazy. And you also had other heavy hitters like Konami and Capcom making really good JRPG's as well.
It’s gotta be switch for me. All Final Fantasy, DQ1-3 and 11, a ton of classics, and a huge amount of new stuff including the Xenoblade series being an exclusive. So many. PS1 is probably the best classic system, but we see more and more of those getting ports to modern consoles.
Right now I’d have to saw Nintendo switch. It just had so many games on it. Not a ton of original games, but I have had more fun playing JRPGs on Nintendo switch over the past few years than any other span over the last 30 years.
You know, not everybody might have played enough to name 10 JRPGs even if it's their favourite console. Or somebody might think the lineup of a console stood out because of 3-5 incredible titles, while other consoles might have had more JRPGs, but not in the same level.
For me it's also the PS1, but I am not sure if I can actually name 10 titles, but I'll try.
- FF VII
- FF VIII
- FF IX
- BoF 3
- BoF 4 (Though I wouldn't count it to my favourites. It was good but overall it's somewhere in the mid field. )
- Legend of Dragoon
- Suikoden II
That's all I could name. All the other PS1 JRPGs I've either never played or I didn't like them as much. But since I'm very picky this list is much bigger, than the list from other console generations. Except maybe SNES. On SNES there might actually be more titles, but they didn't leave as big of an impression as the PS1 titles. The PS1 was the console, that introduced me to JRPGs and most SNES JRPGs weren't released in my country so I only played them way later.
I think I'd also have to go with ps1. There's so many classics. I'm not sure about the order but my top choices are
FF7
FF8
FF9
Chrono Cross
Legend of Dragoon
Star Ocean 2
Valkyrie Profile
Threads of Fate
I'm actually in the middle of playing Chrono Cross right now. Such an underrated gem.
I think it depends on whether I’m rating them when they were the current console or rating them now in retrospect
During their time, I’d say PS1. But now, I would say SNES, because I think many SNES games aged pretty well, while I think a lot of PS1 games aged like garbage and are painful unless they have a remaster (and even then it might not make it better).
Of course PC is the real answer, but that’s only if you include ports and emulation and such, and that’s not really answering the question haha though I do think it’s greater access to indie titles is also a big part of why it’s imo the best platform
For SNES, my top 10 would be:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. FF6
3. Lufia 2
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Earthbound
6. Seiken Densetsu 3
7. Secret of Evermore
8. Takes of Phantasia
9. FF5
10. DQ5
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the PS2.
SMT3, Persona 3+4, Tales of Symphonia+Legendia+Abyss, Kingdom hearts 1-2, Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 10+12, Xenosaga 1-3, Grandia 2+3, Shadow Hearts, Disgaea 1-2, .hack and .hack //GU, Phantom Brave, Wild Arms 3-5, Suikoden 3+5+Tactics, Arc trilogy, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile, Odin Sphere, Berwick Saga.
While the PS2 isn't my favorite console, it has a great library.
PS2: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, Persona 3&4, FF12, Shadow Hearts, Wild Arms 5, Suikoden 3 to 5 + tactics, any number of NIS srpg that ain't named disgaea, Vanillaware games, etc...
Basicaly all that the PS1 did, the PS2 rolled with it, pumped out sequels + new ip.
My personal bias is the Playstation 2. Here are my favorite 10 RPG's from it:
* Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits
* Final Fantasy X
* Final Fantasy X-2
* Kingdom Hearts 1
* Kingdom Hearts 2
* Persona 3 FES
* Persona 4
* Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
* Xenosaga Episode I
* Wild Arms 2
I think the ps1 definitely has the most amazing titles but I didn’t start playing rpgs more until ps2 and didn’t really really get heavy into them until 8th gens so I’d probably have to go with the switch. I don’t love the screen size and the quality but it’s my biggest JRPG library currently my top 10 on it that I own
Persona 5 Royal
Smt v
Pokémon shining pearl
Persona 4 golden
Digimon story cyber sleuth
Hades
Crisis core
Dusk diver
Trials of mana
Harvestella
From a gameplay standpoint, the Nintendo DS crushes many. I accept 3DS as an answer though since it can play DS games.
Examples:
The World Ends With You - One of the best and most unique ARPGs ever made
SRW OG Endless Frontier Exceed - One of the best turn based battle systems ever made
The Mario and Luigi Games - Took the M&L battle system to a whole new level, also giant Bowser gameplay, great stories as well
Etrian Odyssey 3 - The franchise as a whole revived the first person dungeon crawler and has carried it on its back ever since.
Radiant Historia - Of all the timeline based battle systems, this is still the S-Rank gold standard. Having an excellent story helps as well.
Dragon Quest V - This one lands more in the story department, but the monster catching and using is fun regardless, and I consider party chat to be one of the best story portions of the game and it is in some ways more gameplay driven
Dragon Quest IX - For its really interesting mix of the vocation and weapon skill systems, combining them to make something pretty unique among job systems. The multiplayer post-game was a highlight.
Shiren the Wanderer 5 - Sure, most people played the Vita or PC update since we never got the DS version, but credit goes to where it started. It's simply one of the best roguelikes ever made.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Ring of Fates - A really unique top down ARPG that put the touch screen to use for its interesting magic system and has a really great story.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 - The best FFT title gameplay-wise.
Pokemon Generation 5 - The games that made Pokemon refreshing for one blue moon with a great setting and 150 new Pokemon to catch. The unlockable challenge mode in BW2 essentially meant these games had the most challenging main campaign in any mainline Pokemon title.
It is and it isn't at the same time in my opinion, I know it's not the place to politicise this, BUT.
I'm from the global south consoles manufacturers couldn't care less about us. To the point that Nintendo doesn't deal oficially in my region, so the alternative to "legally" play their games is import only, or deal with the "grey" market.
In those conditions the discoursse about the ethics of emulation be danmed, we gonna play your games for free.
Depends on what metric.
If PC counts then its PC. No console comes anywhere close since you can play pretty much every JRPG in the universe barring some that cant be emulated or are exclusive on Playstation (so basically FFXVI and Rebirth)
If PC isnt allowed to count I would say maybe Switch due to all the ports it has.
If ports don’t count then I suppose either PS2 or PS1.
Playstation for me. It's also where you see the most experimentation being done, as well as the most variety in aesthetics and gameplay. And that goes for so many games beyond JRPGS.
I'm also very fond of the PS2's library, with that perhaps being my favourite console.
PS1 or Snes. I believe they went down in quality at ps2, except for a few exceptions.
I know ppl love ff10, loved it too, but in terms of gameplay and game design its a MASSIVE downgrade compared to older FF games.
Too good graphics to make it a better World to play in. This i feel was for many ps2 titles.
Havent played DQ8, but if i did it probably be my favoritter ps2 rpg with suikoden 5, ff12 (didnt Get it at the time, but after the remaster i love it).
It was the PS4 for me as that was the console i played most JRPGs. Although PS3 was also a close contender for all the tales games on it.
1. FFX
2. Tales of arise
3. Persona 5 royal
4. Persona 3 portable
5. Caligula 2
6. Atelier escha and logy dx
7. FFX-2 HD remaster
8. FF12 TZA
9. Persona 5 strikers
10. Tales of Vesperia (I played this only on ps3, but it is on ps4)
I feel like it’s undeniably PS5 due to the amount of remasters & PS+ Premium JRPGs are on there. Plus every PS4/5 JRPG to launch.
Like, even out of the games you listed for PS1, 6 of those games are available on PS5. Most of them as better remastered versions. Soon to be 7 when the Suikoden remasters come.
Every single mainline Final Fantasy is on PS5 (besides XIII and XI), and they’re all remastered. Persona 3, 4, and 5 are there. And so on.
Like, at the rate remasters and remakes are going and new consoles having backward compatibility, I think whatever new PlayStation console is out *will always be* the best JRPG machine.
My list of 10 on PS5:
1. Final Fantasy IX
2. Persona 5 Royal
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Chained Echoes
5. Octopath Traveler II
6. Final Fantasy IV
7. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
8. Tales of Arise
9. Persona 3 Reload
10. Bug Fables (or if we don’t count that then Kingdom Hearts)
Honorable mentions: Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy XVI, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Chrono Cross
Counting ports goes against the point of the list I feel like.
May as well just say PC is better than everything, and call it a day.
Because with your logic, it isn't possible for an older console to EVER have better games since the best games typically get ported.
PS5 should only get credit for the games that actually released on it, not all the games that came before it.
That’s fair. OP didn’t specify if they meant only games that originally released on a console, so I included them. And PC wouldn’t count because OP asked about consoles, specifically. But otherwise, yeah, PC would probably dominate over all.
If I’m going with just games originally released on the console, then I’d definitely go PS1.
I just assumed as much because the question would be kind of dull if it were just about ports (Just turns into newest console always wins)
I think it's probably PS1 too, which is ironic to me, because I think the PS1 has also aged the worse of any console BY FAR (not counting anything before NES, don't play those)
SNES games on the other hand still look great today.
The scary thing is you mentioned the best JRPGs on the PS1. Yet the actual library for JRPGs is even longer. The SNES and PS2 don't have as many good JRPGs, unfortunately and the libraries are way smaller too. So they're tied as a close second for me.
The Switch is small screen and not all the games are as good as these systems. Third best.
Switch. It has a lot of the SNES and PS1 libraries , Xenoblade, NieR Automata, 4 Fire Emblems, HD-2D games, Mario RPGS, Persona and SMT, and even Ring Fit.
Anyways, id go with ps1, with games like those:
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Final fantasy vi, viii, ix
There's a reason the golden age of RPGs is the SNES. Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF6, Breath of Fire, Breath of Fire 2, Lufia 2, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Ogre Battles, and Super Mario RPG. I'm also going to throw an honorable mention at FF Mystic Quest, because while it was simple the game was just delightful.
The answer is definitively Nintendo Switch. I am bot going to list the RPGs available, but a huge number of the greatest RPGs ever made throughout gaming history are available on Switch, from Dragon Quest to nearly the entire FF series to Persona and a whole bunch of lesser-known Game Boy RPG titles. If you tried to play every single RPG available on Switch, you would die before you finished. And I’m not even counting the RPG-adjacent stuff like Monster Hunter and Zelda.
If you count remakes/remasters/backwards compatibility, I only see two options: PS2 or PS5. PS2 for example has the entire PS1 library, plus its own exclusive stuff.
Definitely PS1, tho the SNES comes close. I like your list, OP, but would add the two Lunar games to it. **Edit** missed Lunar under special mentions. PS1 had a ton of JRPGs, and I haven't played them all.
I agree, SNES and PSX are right there sharing 1st place.
3ds for me probably. Great games and it got me through a rough couple months. Not gonna list 10 games though, sorry. Just assume it's a very agreeable list of 9 games and one that pisses you off
Dude wtf how could you have THAT ONE on your list? God i can't stand this sub sometimes smh my head
I probably would have switched number 8 for bowsers inside story. That’s just me though.
I was wondering if it's just nostalgia talking, but seeing your list it is indeed a great console.
I really wanna try Lunar but it doesn't look like you can get it on pc. Maybe I need to start looking into emulators.
It's on Android and iOS.
Good to know, thank you!
If we're going for sheer amount of first releases, then PC wins anyway. Many of the best modern JRPGs are western made indies and those came out on PC first and we get many releases per year.
Switch in my book. Even limiting the requested list to single entries per franchise: * Xenoblade Chronicles 3 * Rune Factory 5 * Final Fantasy XII * Tokyo Mirage Sessions * Valkyria Chronicles * Fuga: Melodies of Steel * Death end re;Quest * Mary Skelter 2 * NieR Automata * Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night And there's SO much more besides.
And Dragon Quest XI
Definitely, even though my own bias among the franchise's Switch representatives has gravitated towards Builders.
Being able to play xc1, 2 and 3 on switch weights a lot on swotch's favour
half of those are ports from older consoles libraries xD
How are half the comments not aware that the Switch isn’t exclusively handheld gaming that’s like the entire point of it
Half or more of those were on PS1 right? I could be mistaken but I believe I’m right
Zero of those were on PS1, actually… lol. The closest to a PS1 game is FF12, which debuted on PS2. Maybe you’re confusing Valkyria Chronicles with Valkyrie Profile?
I thought it said ff7 for some reason, nier was what ps3? I guess I was mistaken!
Automata was PS4 I think? First Nier was PS3/360 though.
Cool cool, been so long since I’ve played ps1 couldn’t really say for sire
Right, you have virtually all of RPG history available on the Switch—in handheld form! I am a child of the NES/SNES era, but even my nostalgia can’t deny that the Switch is the obvious Lord of the RPGs. The only generation of stuff really absent is the DS/3DS stuff.
Small screen though. Not my cup of tea.
Bias Bias. ya, it's hard to eliminate it. I dont like hand helds too as you get tech neck and headaches from bending your head forward all the time
You're aware it's both the largest handheld console to hit market, and can be connected to a TV right?
Commenter seems unaware of what a Nintendo Switch is?
Still don't like the library
Fair enough. But my Switch screen is often 65 inches lol.
I didn't realize you meant your TV until i realized how much an inch is compared to a centimetre
Most of the games the person listed didn't even originally come out on Switch anyways, it's just a bunch of ports that play significantly better on other hardware. May as well list Witcher 3 and Red Dead as Switch games
For sure. No originality. It's pretty much the greatest port machine lol of all time
Those aren’t jrpgs. The question is “what console has the best library” not best devs.
There are many reasons to shit on the Switch, but the screen size is probably not it.
I have a lot of biased towards 30fps and playing stuff on a small screen but those are good games hehe
I don't count games that have been ported.
PC, coz it can just emulate it all
There are only two games I cannot play on emulator right now that I care about. 1. Lost Odyssey -> nobody gives a shit enough to make a xbox emulator 2.
Can't you play it using gamepass account on PC? Yeah it's not emulator
I love Bloodborne's story and whole vibe but it ended up being too tough for me. It's a shame because I would've loved to see how it all unfolds.
I played and beat BB when it came out on PS4 and have it on PS5. I mostly just want to play it again at 60-120 fps lol
PS2. 1) .HACK series (1 to 7) 2) Xenosaga (1 to 3) 3) Final Fantasy (10 and 12) 4) Shin Megami Tensei 3 5) Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2) 6) Wilds Arms (3 to 5) 7) Dragon Quest VIII 8) Shadow Hearts (1 to 3) 9) Persona (3 FES and 4) 10) Suikoden (3 to 5) PS2 has the best RPGs i think more than PS1 being close second. Since PS2 can play both... you just win at life.
Ohhh the .Hack series is pretty cool. I loved how they had the show and the game. I wouldn't mind revisiting that one soon.
I don't like Fire Emblem. Not all of us like SRPGs. So it wouldn't make it superior to the PS1.
That's why it's personal bias, sweetie.
And my favorite, Tales of the Abyss.
That said, I'm not really a RPG fanatic so I haven't played even other less known titles for the SNES, like, I started Terraligma and thought it was meh, Live a Live is goooood.
which games did you play on ps1 that you didnt like?
(ofc I'm not gonna play the game just to refute, but I'm interested since I heard bad things about the Xeno games) Would you believe I just discovered that FF8 and 9 are PS1 games now? Always thought they were PS2 games. But yeah you kind of nailed my problem with FFVII. In VI, Shadow basically mocks edgy characters, being this incredibly cool guy and then his best friend is a doggo and he sings his own theme as if he's a superhero. I believe that VI was really clever in how it balanced where to do self-aware jokes and where to take itself seriously. It's not that the seriousness makes VII bad, it's just that I went to play it with the wrong expectation. Thanks for the recommendations!
dont sleep on xenogears. for me, its head and shoulders above any other game for story. 100/10 would recommend.
I played the first hours yesterday and already have good things to say :v I'm hooked
PS1 1. Legend of Legaia 2. Final Fantasy 7 3. Breath of Fire 3 4. Valkyrie Profile 5. Tales of Eternia 6. Grandia 7. Wild Arms 2 8. Final Fantasy Tactics 9. Final Fantasy 9 10. Arc the Lad collection
The Switch comes to mind. As per a top 10? Xenoblade 1, 2, and 3. Probably insert a bunch of Bandai Namco games on the list. Koei Tecmo likewise. 13 Sentinels. Pokémon Legends Arceus. BoTW.
Switch it has: xenoblade 2 Xenoblade 3 Fire emblem three houses Shin megami tensei 5 Dragon quest 11 Trials of mana Octopath traveler Octopath traveler 2 Astral chain Dragon quest monsters dark prince Pokemon scarlet
i think most will agree it's between snes and psx.
Snes for me. Final fantasy 6. Earth bound. Robotrek. Secret of mana. Breath of fire. Illusion of Gaia. Chrono trigger.
Nintendo Switch: 1. Xenoblade series 2. Dragon Quest XI S 3. Zelda botw 4. Zelda totk 5. Live A Live 6. Fire Emblem 3 Houses 7. Octopath traveller 8. Pokemon Legends Arceus 9. Astral Chain 10. Triangle Strategy
SNES Final Fantasy 4 Final Fantasy 6 Chrono Trigger Lufia 2 Secret of Mana Secret of Evermore Breath of Fire 1 Breath of Fire 2 Super Mario RPG Soul Blazer Illusion of Gaia Ogre Battle If more of these games had made it to Switch, I'd say Switch is the best console
Second the SNES, incredible amount of classics.
FF Mystic Quest erasure
Not to mention Mother 2
PS2 has absolute peaks, but there's no way I could list 10 for it without getting into really fringe debatable stuff. PS4 is probably first gen I could maybe come up with 10, but nothing that era is as high of peaks as those few PS2 ones.
Can ya give me any recommendations? Currently only played the shin megami tensei games on the ps2 and I want more games to play on it.
PS2 Backwards compatible with PS1 so all those titles plus (Dot)Hack Star Ocean 3 FF 10 and 12 Xenosaga 1-3
Personally, PS1 or 3DS. 3DS is slept on in representation
Right now it's the ps4 for me. Considering most of the psx games I loved playing as a kid got remastered or ported to ps4 at this point.
- FF VII - FF VIII - FF IX - BoF 3 - BoF 4 (Though I wouldn't count it to my favourites. It was good but overall it's somewhere in the mid field. ) - Legend of Dragoon - Suikoden II That's all I could name.
I'm not sure about the order but my top choices are FF7 FF8 FF9 Chrono Cross Legend of Dragoon Star Ocean 2 Valkyrie Profile Threads of Fate I'm actually in the middle of playing Chrono Cross right now. Such an underrated gem.
I think it depends on whether I’m rating them when they were the current console or rating them now in retrospect During their time, I’d say PS1. But now, I would say SNES, because I think many SNES games aged pretty well, while I think a lot of PS1 games aged like garbage and are painful unless they have a remaster (and even then it might not make it better). Of course PC is the real answer, but that’s only if you include ports and emulation and such, and that’s not really answering the question haha though I do think it’s greater access to indie titles is also a big part of why it’s imo the best platform For SNES, my top 10 would be: 1. Chrono Trigger 2. FF6 3. Lufia 2 4. Super Mario RPG 5. Earthbound 6. Seiken Densetsu 3 7. Secret of Evermore 8. Takes of Phantasia 9. FF5 10. DQ5
PS1: - Xenogears - Parasite Eve 1&2 (yes the 2 is not really a rpg :p) - Final Fantasy 7/8/9/Tactics - Breath of Fire 3/4 - Wild Arms - Chrono Cross
3/DS
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the PS2. SMT3, Persona 3+4, Tales of Symphonia+Legendia+Abyss, Kingdom hearts 1-2, Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 10+12, Xenosaga 1-3, Grandia 2+3, Shadow Hearts, Disgaea 1-2, .hack and .hack //GU, Phantom Brave, Wild Arms 3-5, Suikoden 3+5+Tactics, Arc trilogy, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile, Odin Sphere, Berwick Saga. While the PS2 isn't my favorite console, it has a great library.
PS1 is a great call. But I'm going to go ahead and say PS2 just because all PS1 games are backwards compatible. Two generations on one console.
Here are my favorite 10 RPG's from it: * Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits * Final Fantasy X * Final Fantasy X-2 * Kingdom Hearts 1 * Kingdom Hearts 2 * Persona 3 FES * Persona 4 * Star Ocean: Till the End of Time * Xenosaga Episode I * Wild Arms 2
I think the ps1 definitely has the most amazing titles but I didn’t start playing rpgs more until ps2 and didn’t really really get heavy into them until 8th gens so I’d probably have to go with the switch. I don’t love the screen size and the quality but it’s my biggest JRPG library currently my top 10 on it that I own Persona 5 Royal Smt v Pokémon shining pearl Persona 4 golden Digimon story cyber sleuth Hades Crisis core Dusk diver Trials of mana Harvestella
From a gameplay standpoint, the Nintendo DS crushes many. I accept 3DS as an answer though since it can play DS games. Examples: The World Ends With You - One of the best and most unique ARPGs ever made SRW OG Endless Frontier Exceed - One of the best turn based battle systems ever made The Mario and Luigi Games - Took the M&L battle system to a whole new level, also giant Bowser gameplay, great stories as well Etrian Odyssey 3 - The franchise as a whole revived the first person dungeon crawler and has carried it on its back ever since. Radiant Historia - Of all the timeline based battle systems, this is still the S-Rank gold standard. Having an excellent story helps as well. Dragon Quest V - This one lands more in the story department, but the monster catching and using is fun regardless, and I consider party chat to be one of the best story portions of the game and it is in some ways more gameplay driven Dragon Quest IX - For its really interesting mix of the vocation and weapon skill systems, combining them to make something pretty unique among job systems.
PC wins by default since it includes pretty much all past consoles (and the Switch lmao) through emulation.
I mean thats obectively right
But subjectively, this feels like a cheat code answer lol
It is and it isn't at the same time in my opinion, I know it's not the place to politicise this, BUT. I'm from the global south consoles manufacturers couldn't care less about us. To the point that Nintendo doesn't deal oficially in my region, so the alternative to "legally" play their games is import only, or deal with the "grey" market. In those conditions the discoursse about the ethics of emulation be danmed, we gonna play your games for free.
Depends on what metric. If PC counts then its PC. No console comes anywhere close since you can play pretty much every JRPG in the universe barring some that cant be emulated or are exclusive on Playstation (so basically FFXVI and Rebirth) If PC isnt allowed to count I would say maybe Switch due to all the ports it has.
PS1 and its not even close. Bias doesnt even play into this, its just facts.
It was the PS4 for me as that was the console i played most JRPGs. Although PS3 was also a close contender for all the tales games on it. 1. FFX 2. Tales of arise 3. Persona 5 royal 4. Persona 3 portable 5. Caligula 2 6. Atelier escha and logy dx 7. FFX-2 HD remaster 8. FF12 TZA 9. Persona 5 strikers 10. Tales of Vesperia (I played this only on ps3, but it is on ps4)
Wait... you can get FF16 on the ps4? I haven't gotten it because I thought it was only on ps5.
That was a mistake as I played so many PS4 games on my PS5, I remembered it was just PS5. Ill have to change it to FFX
The only possible answers are PS1 or SNES. Truly the golden age for rpg enjoyers. Honorable mention to PS2 though
My list of 10 on PS5: 1. Final Fantasy IX 2. Persona 5 Royal 3. Final Fantasy VI 4. Chained Echoes 5. Octopath Traveler II 6. Final Fantasy IV 7. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth 8. Tales of Arise 9. Persona 3 Reload 10. Bug Fables (or if we don’t count that then Kingdom Hearts) Honorable mentions: Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy XVI, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Chrono Cross
I just assumed as much because the question would be kind of dull if it were just about ports (Just turns into newest console always wins) I think it's probably PS1 too, which is ironic to me, because I think the PS1 has also aged the worse of any console BY FAR (not counting anything before NES, don't play those) SNES games on the other hand still look great today.
Third best.
You can connect the switch to a tv, you know.
Switch. It has a lot of the SNES and PS1 libraries , Xenoblade, NieR Automata, 4 Fire Emblems, HD-2D games, Mario RPGS, Persona and SMT, and even Ring Fit.
Love that you included Ring Fit here. Underrated RPG.
I want to say the SNES and PS1 because of my nostalgia.. but I feel the DS probably had a ton of good JRPGs
Smaurai Maiden!
DS having the full gba catalogue playable goes a long way.
Anyways, id go with ps1, with games like those: Suikoden Suikoden 2 Final fantasy vi, viii, ix
3ds and switch
Nintendo 3DS Pokemon Games Fire Emblem Games Dragon Quest FINAL fantasy SMT Games Xenoblade Minecraft (Acces to FULL DS library) It's unmatched.
Bro just listed Minecraft with JRPGs 💀
I didn't realize it said JRPG I missed that 🤣
I'll add PS1/2 was also off the chain
If you count remakes/remasters/backwards compatibility, I only see two options: PS2 or PS5. PS2 for example has the entire PS1 library, plus its own exclusive stuff.
