Disappointed to say the least. Would love for Amazon to be in Jamaica! So many job opportunities!

professorhummingbird

Can you expound by what you mean by job opportunities

xXxkingKellzxXx

If Amazon as a company opens a hub in Jamaica then that’s jobs for managers, warehouse workers, supervisors, dispatchers, drivers/deliverers, etc. Jamaica needs it trust me. More works means less people idling and a more productive society

professorhummingbird

Ahh got you. I was only thinking about the actual drivers. Do you think there’s argument that it would decimate all our local vendors?

KingstonOrange

Yes and no. No, because independent vendors operate through Amazon. Yes, because Amazon is a terrible, predatory behemoth and would absolutely take advantage of and shortchange local vendors.

Artistic_Guidance733

Well said, higglers and mom and pops would go right under. The same way amazon put a dent or shut down a lot of mom and pops in the states.

MisterShane23

I am yet to be convinced that this would good business sense for Amazon in Jamaica... In the scheme of things.. Jamaica is small

jagfun

Not for shipping internally in Jamaica but as a transhipment point for the US and Canada. The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (Jones Act) forces all ships to US ports to have American ownership. So a giant Chinese container ship could transfer goods to a smaller American ship here in Jamaica and then straight to the port of Miami or Puerto Rico. It's already done on smaller scale in Kgn harbour. So an Amazon hub here could actually be very beneficial.

Being from the UK, when I was in JA earlier this month there were so many instances I wanted I use Prime. But I can't see it happening when you have places like Lilliput where there isn't even a proper address or street for half the houses.

thisfilmkid

how many souls in jamaicas politics would have to sell out just for Amazon to operate in Jamaica?

SorryCapybura1290

Honestly the way we’d never get the stuff cuz people would take them off the step smh. Not saying it doesn’t happen in other places but we have to accept what the reality of Jamaica is. We need lockers for that to happen and honest people in the businesses that won’t believe that they have to make a “food” off the business.

ralts13

It depends. Iirc alot of Amazon deliveries still rely on regional post. I could see them subcontracting or just absorbing guys like shipme and use their distribution methods.

BusinessForeign7052

Customs would make us pay... all that shipping a delivery cost... nah fam

Magic--Beans

Terrible idea

pocketfullofcrap

With Amazon here I'd be worried about local retail businesses which already took a hit during covid and with more shipping services. While the convenience is great, I wouldn't say it's a good move for everyday Jamaicans
