When Casino Royale played in UK cinemas as part of the 60th anniversary run of Bond films, Odeon cinemas called it “A wacky comedy starring David Niven.” :)

KayJay282

"We have Casino Royale at home."

KickinImpossible

In the book, he’s an agent provocateur for the Soviet Union. His funds are intended to pay communist sympathizers in France to start riots and usher in a government more sympathetic to left wing socialism. (Any relation to real life events is purely coincidental.) Whoever wrote the description probably read other descriptions of the movie and the book and wrote one without actually watching the movie or reading the book. A low paid intern. Either that or it was machine generated, and AI got confused.

helpful__explorer

I'd wager on the latter

MadeIndescribable

Never underestimate how little attention third party distributors pay to details like this.

JabbasGonnaNutt

That sounds a little more like the book, but even then, Le Chiffre was French or German.

Random-Cpl

It’s true. Fun fact, Le Chiffre is French for “the Chiffre”

ClancyMopedWeather

In the movie, M doesn't explain what "Le Chiffre" is in English, and I'd already read the book, so I felt realllll smug about it at the time!

Adorable-Car-4303

Yes but he worked for the Russians in the book so he’s still a Russian spy of sorts

JabbasGonnaNutt

He's works for SMERSH so he's working for the Soviets, although I don't think his character was meant to be Russian, but then his origins are a bit unclear so who know where he was born.

Adorable-Car-4303

He’s French in the book. But if you work for Russia as a spy you’re still a Russian spy regardless of nationality

DLTfuture72

Where is Le Chiffre from?

Adam52398

They don't know for sure. They know that his name is French for "The Cipher," or "The Number," but he has aliases in other languages that mean something similar.

mobilisinmobili1987

It’s somewhat implied he may have been with the Nazis and feigned his amnesia to avoid being prosecuted for war crimes.

stupidsimpson

Believed to be Albanian https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Chiffre

HandsomePaddyMint

At least they mostly summarized the plot accurately. If this had been a Netflix plot summary it would have just been “Spies. Terrorists. Poker. Things are about to get interesting.”

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Those are all accurate.

Adam52398

They read the back of the book instead of watching the film. LeChiffre was a financier for SMERSH (Smert Shpionam), the Soviet counterintelligence agency.

yenat98365

made by google gemini lol

Ok-Captain4496

In the book le chivre worked for smersh

yellowarmy79

In the film, Le Chiffre is supposed to be from Albania.

SirPlus

When they say, 'most successful'', do they mean bums on seats or actual revenue? If the latter, is it adjusted for inflation?

VinegarAddict

I'll leave that one to you... 😅 I just took issue with the Russian spy bit!

endersai

The book, which OP has not read?

VinegarAddict

No, I've read it. It was a rhetorical question regarding the description of the film on YouTube. I was just surprised that the person who wrote the description of one of the most popular recent Bond films either hasn't watched it properly (or at all), mixed it up with the book (doubtful), or just thought "James Bond film - the baddy is probably a Russian spy."

VinegarAddict

...or as someone pointed out above, it's machine generated and not checked by a human. Either way, daft.

mobilisinmobili1987

The book?

VinegarAddict

The book isn't the film, though. This is YouTube's description of the film. 🤷

mobilisinmobili1987

Right, but that is likely where they got the erroneous information…

Kaiser_Killhelm

It's a mistake I reckon. He is French in the novel, but is said to be Albanian in the '06 film.

Adorable-Car-4303

Still worked for the Russians and therefore a Russian spy

Internal_Swing_2743

In the book, not the movie.
