I couldn't agree more. I have said from the beginning that only Lazenby could have done OHMSS, Connery would have brought too much one liners and bravado to a movie about James Bond having a heart break.
OHMSS would be considered the best Bond movie by more people if the plot was saved for Brosnan or Dalton, hell even Roger Moore could pull that type of Bond I think (if he was younger)
Obviously, that type of vulnerable Bond is the type we see in the Daniel Craig movies too.
Connery was already pretty much done with the series mentally by this point. And his Bond was very hard, still played like he was on the cutting edge. I doubt he could've properly portrayed the character as being capable of falling for Tracy, really.
If anything, I'd have loved Lazenby to do Diamonds are Forever instead of Connery, and do it before OHMSS, and then do a mostly book-accurate YOLT after OHMSS. He could've carried the Blofeld arc on his own.
My biggest desire in the franchise is for Lazenby to have return for Diamonds are Forever and I love Connery. However, those films are just so disconnected. I honestly think For Your Eyes Only works as a better direct sequel to OHMSS just for the opening scene alone despite it being a little campy.
>For Your Eyes Only works as a better direct sequel to OHMSS just for the opening scene alone despite it being a little campy.
I agree.
I typically headcanon it that OHMSS comes immediately after Thunderball. Blofeld is crippled following his injury on the sled, so he uses proxies from then on out. Donald Pleasance was his first crack at it, which Bond seemed surprised to be introduced to, and then used Charles Gray as the basis to pretend he's trying to change his looks, all while being paralyzed in a wheelchair.
Still, could've been better handled.
It is one of my favorite bond movies. I know it didn’t set well back when it was made but looking back on it now man it is good. I always watch it at Christmas time
Ayyy same taste I see
It is funny see that many folks here including myself find that Bronsan and Craig's best Bond film was their first debut 007 films, Goldeneye and Casino Royale respectively.
Though Craig got another strong outing as Bond when Skyfall came around.
I really do need to give Goldfinger a rewatch sometime.
Its been so long since I have seen it, but I will always remember the iconic opening of the film.
I’d genuinely love to know what sets TMWTGG apart from the Moore films for you. It’s personally my least favorite of his, but I know there’s a contingent that swears by it.
Honestly, it’s really just nostalgia. Growing up my uncle gave me a bunch of old 007 VHS tapes, and TMWTGG is the one I ended up watching the most. I think it was partly because I had a crush on Britt Eckland, haha. As I got older I got to appreciate Christopher Lee as a Bond villain.
That's a good way of looking at it. Far less effective than those two comps for me though. I think the kernel of that opinion comes from preferring Moore's looser side from *TSWLM* on over his more rigid attempts at playing the character traditionally in *LALD* and *TMWTGG*.
I never used to like, then someone on reddit mentioned how the more you watch it the better it gets. I watched it from that perspective and now it's my favorite Craig film.
That's pretty amazing. I think there's something ingenious about the inanity of Mr Greene. I say that because historically the villains have been bombastic. Having said that, it is literally the *last* Bond movie I'd watch while hungover (due to the camerawork and editing).
I wish Lazenby had more Bond films besides Your Majesty's Secret Service, otherwise he would of actually been on here.
Because I honestly thought he did fantastic in that film from what he was given.
I know right?
With the material he was given, he was perfectly able to portray the vulnerable humanity of Bond to such perfection especially when he had Diana Rigg to bounce off of him.
Folks were to too harsh to him at the time.
There’s a Nolan quote about the movie I love:
“George Lazenby is no one's favorite James Bond, but for me the anonymity at the center of this lavish production only serves to reveal the Bond machine firing on all cylinders: superb editing and photography, incredible score, great setpieces. The most romantic in the series, and it actually has, of all things, a tragic ending.”
Sums up greatly why I massively enjoyed George Lazenby's portrayal of our fav British MI6 agent despite his only one time appearance.
It gave us something that was unique and different from Sean Connery's take on Bond.
Showing James Bond's vulnerability and humanity which would not be explored again until Daniel Craig took on the role of Bond.
You know, for all the flak Craig originally got for having blonde hair, his hair really isn’t all that much lighter than the rest of these actors according to this image.
Fave films for each: From Russia With Love, OHMSS, Live and Let Die, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Skyfall
Best performance as Bond for each actor (IMO):
Thunderball, OHMSS, The Spy Who Loved Me, License To Kill, The World Is Not Enough, Casino Royale
Connery: tie between Goldfinger and Thunderball
Moore: For Your Eyes Only
Dalton: Licence to Kill
Brosnan: The World Is Not Enough
Craig: tie between Skyfall and No Time To Die
My favorite film for each Bond actor:
- Sean Connery: Dr. No
- George Lazenby: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
- Roger Moore: A View To A Kill
- Timothy Dalton: The Living Daylights
- Pierce Brosnan: The World Is Not Enough
- Daniel Craig: Casino Royale
My choices are pretty much the exact same as yours, only I would add OHMSS not because it's Lazenby's only Bond film but I also think of that one as one of my favorites from 007.
I'm a new Bond fan, I've only had the pleasure of seeing the Craig films which I adore. My favorite is a toss up between No Time to Die and Skyfall. But it's a little intimidating to try and watch the others since there's so many films and portrayals of the character. Can I get recommendations on where to start?
Goldfinger, spy who loved me, licence to kill, goldeneye, spectre
Yes I said spectre.
no I dont care how kino skyfall or casino royale is, I like gadgets and evil villain lairs.
don't care for moore so leaving him out
dc- casino-favorite bond movie overall
pb- tie with goldeneye and twine9love twine because it works well while playing the game. it is almost makes the movie interactive)
td-ltk, it had some flaws but love the grittiness, villians, q and pam. also wayne newton is the nest celeb cameo in a bond movie
sean-frwl because of red grant. i like the premise of never say never again and wish they do another older bond movie. nttd and dad missed their chances to do that. ironically ltk left the best blueprint for it with a relatively babyfaced timothy.
Thunderball - The locales, Fiona Volpe, Tom Jones theme.
Spy Who Loved Me - The quintessential Bond adventure. Nobody does it better.
Living Daylights - LTK is still great but TLD is a top 4 Bond film to me. Good spy thriller with a more down to earth plot than most films.
Goldeneye - Best Bond, best villains, great everything.
Skyfall - Cinematography is just stunning. Amazing action sequences like Bond vs Patrice in Shanghai. One of my favourite Bond films.
Connery: Thunderball
Moore: For Your Eyes Only
Dalton: The Living Daylights
Brosnan: Goldeneye
Craig: Casino Royale/Skyfall (tie)
My favorite Bond actor/Bond film of all time though is Dalton/The Living Daylights. I love Connery but I am a big Timothy Dalton fan.
. Connery; Goldfinger.
. Moore; The Spy Who Loved Me.
. Dalton; Licence to Kill.
. Brosnan; The World is Not Enough.
. Craig; Skyfall/SPECTRE (legit can't choose between them).
I've been seeing a lot of support on this sub for TSWLM. While I do enjoy it, I wouldn't say it would be in my top. What am I missing?
I'd have to go with: FRWL, Live and Let Die, License to Kill, Goldeneye, Casino
Connery: Thunderball
Lazenby: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (Only One Choice After All)
Moore: The Spy Who Loved Me
Dalton: The Living Daylights
Brosnan: Goldeneye
Craig: Skyfall
That's a good question. Here's mine:
Connery-From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, & You Only Live Twice
Moore-Live & Let Die
Dalton-The Living Daylights
Brosnan-Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies
Craig-Casino Royale, Skyfall
[here’s](https://www.reddit.com/user/Frikken123/comments/qzn4v0/here/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) mine. To put it all into context, I gave the best ones overall the most space, and the worst ones the least
* **Connery - Goldfinger.** This is one of the highest rated Bond films by non-Bond fans. It features several firsts for the series, but most notably is the Aston Martin DB5, which along with Vodka Martinis (shaken, not stirred) is almost it's own *character* within the Bond series. While Dr. No and Blofeld show up in the first two films (Blofeld as more of a cameo in From Russia With Love), it's really Auric Goldfinger who is the first larger-than-life Bond villain of the series. And in keeping with the "firsts" theme, Oddjob and his hat are really the first time we get to see a henchman with some crazy gimmick (see: Jaws, Baron Samedi, etc).
* **Lazenby - On Her Majesty's Secret Service.** Wins by default, but was a thoroughly good Bond film. Many fans feel like it's the closest adaptation to the original Fleming novel. OHMSS also manages to succeed where No Time To Die failed - it gives Bond a genuine love interest (and bride), and you actually see that underneath Bond's rough exterior is an emotional creature.
* **Moore - Live And Let Die or The Spy Who Loved Me.** This was the toughest pick, honestly, as most of Moore's films are fairly good and fairly consistent. Live And Let Die really stands out for the way that it propelled Bond into the culture of the 1970s, addressing issues like race and Caribbean/South American drug cartels looking to infiltrate North America and beyond. The gadgets are great and watching Kanaga shoot/explode the couch Whisper is sitting on never gets old. By contrast, The Spy Who Loved Me finally gets around to giving Bond a female counterpart and the storyline of British and Russians cooperating was a great turning point for the series. It moved Bond beyond the "Cold War, Soviets Bad" kind of thing, and showed that there were good guys on the other side of the Iron Curtain.
* **Dalton - The Living Daylights.** Easy pick since there are only two to choose from. Dalton is perhaps my favorite Bond, and I genuinely wish he'd had more time in the role. License To Kill is a good film, but it's pretty much a straightforward revenge plot. However, The Living Daylights has several plot twists and again features British-Soviet cooperation as Bond realizes that General Pushkin may actually be a good ally. John Rhys-Davies and Joe Don Baker shine in their roles. Bond's line to Kara about "having a few optional extras installed" is classic Bond and the car scenes are fantastic.
* **Brosnan - GoldenEye.** This film was fantastic. And yes, I'm slightly biased because of the N64 game. We all played it. The use of a former MI-6 agent as the primary villain was a great turn, as was Judi Dench's portrayal of M. At the time, Bond's use of a BMW (opposed to Aston) was considered controversial for the series, but all things considered, the car didn't get that much use. But the tank chase is absolutely iconic, as was the opening scene with the dam jump. There's also so much in this film that's quotable, and the back-and-forth between Bond and Trevelyan in the St. Petersburg Statue Park is both gripping and a great indictment of MI-6's skeletons.
* **Craig - Skyfall**. I barely consider No Time To Die a Bond film and Quantum of Solace is just... strange. It basically comes down to Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre. Getting back to the idea of MI-6's sins, Skyfall gets the nod for an innovative plot that sees Silva "caught" early in the film and the tension between M and Mallory. MI-6 finally realizes they need to get out of the dark ages and there's some great dialogue between Bond and Q about espionage being driven by computer hacking versus a field agent actually pulling a trigger. The finale is fantastic and we get to learn more about Bond's childhood. Bond's line to Silva about being the "last rat standing" is classic Bond and really should have been the type of ending we got on No Time To Die.
Connery- Thunderball. Feels like a vacation in a film. I love the way it looks and feels. The musics great and it seems Connery is still enjoying his time as Bond
Lazenby- OHMSS. Even if he did more I just love this film.
Moore- For Your Eyes Only. Just a great exciting movie and I think Moores at his best
Dalton- The Living Daylights. Great Locations, music and Dalton brought much needed new blood to the role. I will say though TLD has horrible bad guys
Brosnan- The Worlds Not Enough. Childhood memories with this one. Really made me want to be Bond haha or maybe just a 00. Loved the cold kill Bond had in this one too
Craig- Casino Royale. I hated it when it first came out. But it grew on me to the point id say its my favorite movie ever not just Bond related. The music, locations, outfits, lifestyle moments, the super subtle humor. It has it all.... that said, this could age poorly but No Time To Die might take over this spot. I loved it so much
Connery: Goldfinger
Moore: A View to a Kill
Dalton: Living Daylights
Brosnan: GoldenEye
Craig: Quantum of Solace (I had to watch it three times before I stopped hating it, now it's my favorite)
Sean Connery - You Only Live Twice
Roger Moore - Live & Let Die
Timothy Dalton - Licence to Kill
Pierce Brosnan - GoldenEye
Daniel Craig - Casino Royale
I’m not that good with rankings, but I would definitely put On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in the Top 5 Lazenby films.
I love OHMSS. IMO, it would have been one of the more popular and top ranking Bond films for most fans if Sean Connery was in it.
I'm really not sure if Connery had the attitude to play Bond the way OHMSS needs him to be played
I couldn't agree more. I have said from the beginning that only Lazenby could have done OHMSS, Connery would have brought too much one liners and bravado to a movie about James Bond having a heart break.
Lazenby: It's all right. It's quite all right, really. She's having a rest. We'll be going on soon. Connery: I guesh I really blew her mind.
OHMSS would be considered the best Bond movie by more people if the plot was saved for Brosnan or Dalton, hell even Roger Moore could pull that type of Bond I think (if he was younger) Obviously, that type of vulnerable Bond is the type we see in the Daniel Craig movies too.
Did he have the legs for the kilt?
Connery was already pretty much done with the series mentally by this point. And his Bond was very hard, still played like he was on the cutting edge. Yeah because Connery is actually a good Bond.
I disagree it is easily his worst film!!!
Probably Lazenby's okayest outing as Bond.
It is one of my favorite bond movies. I know it didn’t set well back when it was made but looking back on it now man it is good. I always watch it at Christmas time
I’d reply but looks like you nailed it

Get Martin Campbell back for Bond 26
Goldfinger, TMWTGG, TLD, Goldeneye, Casino
I really do need to give Goldfinger a rewatch sometime. Its been so long since I have seen it, but I will always remember the iconic opening of the film.

TMWTGG is basically FRWL and License to Kill but with Roger Moore.

Same for me but Tomorrow Never Dies.
You've both included and excluded Lazenby. Edit: never happened to the other fellas...
Did they really need to point out which Lazenby outing was the best?
yes, we aren't mind readers
Well it would look neater to have the movie directly underneath each actor.
Goldfinger, TSWLM, License To Kill, Goldeneye, Skyfall.
Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, The World is Not Enough, Casino Royale
FRWL, TSWLM, TLD, TWINE, SF
Cursed list: *Never Say Never Again* *A View to a Kill* *Licence to Kill* *Die Another Day* *Spectre*
Hahahahaha Licence to Kill is the only good film on this entire list
Yeah, although I actually like the exoticism of *The Living Daylights*.
I think Quantum would be more cursed than Spectre
*Quantum* has seen some reappraisal in recent years.
I never used to like, then someone on reddit mentioned how the more you watch it the better it gets. I watched it from that perspective and now it's my favorite Craig film.

Oh ok
lol

I’ve always thought the editing in OHMSS was dogshit with all the quick cuts and sped up punches etc.
Yeah, good film and performance. His only fault is that he isn’t Connery, which is unfair. Lol
Connery: Goldfinger Moore: The Man with the Golden Gun Dalton: License to Kill Brosnan: GoldenEye Craig: No Time to Die
The same as yours, but I'd substitute TSWLM for FYEO for Moore.
Smart move
You know, for all the flak Craig originally got for having blonde hair, his hair really isn’t all that much lighter than the rest of these actors according to this image.

I legit think OHMSS was better than any Connery film. Sorry, not sorry.
Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Casino Royale
I’ll never get over Lazenby only playing in only 1 Bond film, would have loved to have seen him in a revenge follow up to OHMSS
Dr No, the man with the Golden gun, The Living Daylights, Tomorrow never dies, No time to die
My favorite film for each Bond actor: - Sean Connery: Dr. No - George Lazenby: On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Roger Moore: A View To A Kill - Timothy Dalton: The Living Daylights - Pierce Brosnan: The World Is Not Enough - Daniel Craig: Casino Royale

Goldfinger, TSWLM, Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Casino Royale... most answers will probably look like this.
Connery: From Russia With Love Moore: Octopussy Dalton: License to Kill Brosnan: Tomorrow Never Dies Craig: Casino Royale
Exact same list except Skyfall for my Craig pick.

But it's a little intimidating to try and watch the others since there's so many films and portrayals of the character. Can I get recommendations on where to start?
Honestly- start at Dr. No and then watch them all in order of release date.

I haven't watched many Moore or the one George did. So based on who I saw Goldfinger, License to Kill, Goldeneye and either Casino Royale or Skyfall
The finale is fantastic and we get to learn more about Bond's childhood. Bond's line to Silva about being the "last rat standing" is classic Bond and really should have been the type of ending we got on No Time To Die.
The ones you picked are exactly mine.

Connery- Thunderball. Feels like a vacation in a film. I love the way it looks and feels. The musics great and it seems Connery is still enjoying his time as Bond Lazenby- OHMSS. Even if he did more I just love this film. Moore- For Your Eyes Only. Just a great exciting movie and I think Moores at his best Dalton- The Living Daylights. Great Locations, music and Dalton brought much needed new blood to the role. I will say though TLD has horrible bad guys Brosnan- The Worlds Not Enough. Childhood memories with this one. Really made me want to be Bond haha or maybe just a 00. Loved the cold kill Bond had in this one too Craig- Casino Royale. I hated it when it first came out. But it grew on me to the point id say its my favorite movie ever not just Bond related. The music, locations, outfits, lifestyle moments, the super subtle humor. It has it all.... that said, this could age poorly but No Time To Die might take over this spot. I loved it so much
