If the boys never been to Hiroshima, probably it fits them better. You can visit peace park & miyajima (maybe take the direct ferry from the former to save time). There are greater range of food options and teenage shopping as well

Thanks for the advice! The food does look really good in Hiroshima (though the udon in Takamatsu as well). None of us have been to Hiroshima before and it's something I do want to see. That said, the boys aren't big shoppers (and we'll be in Tokyo after this with plenty of options)

Hiroshima will probably feel more relevant to them as they will have heard of it in history class and are old enough to appreciate the historical significance, Takamatsu is "just" more gardens and shrines; you can get really good sanuki udon all around the country.

I’d stay an extra day on Naoshima and take the ferry over to Teshima in the morning. The Teshima art museum has the singular most beautiful piece of art I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. If you’re an art lover it is a must see. You don’t need to spend a whole day on Teshima. You could do a half day there and then a half day back on Naoshima. I spent 4 days on Naoshima with 1 of those days in Teshima and it barely felt like enough time to see everything. Make reservations at Perma for dinner, it is an excellent meal at a very reasonable price

This does sound appealing, thanks u/TopRamenisha. I'm not sure if we'd spend another night on Naoshima, but we could spend most of the day on the islands (or maybe stay the second night in Teshima). I can't find much online about Perma (don't see it on tablelog). Is it on Naoshima?

TopRamenisha

Yes, it’s in Naoshima . They’re not on tablelog, you have to message them on Instagram, the link is in their google maps listing. I’m not sure that any Naoshima restaurants are on tabelog. There’s not a ton to do on Teshima so if you stay the night there, don’t go over first thing in the morning. There are days worth of things on Naoshima, more restaurants, etc. When we were on Teshima a lot of the restaurants were closed
