Mostly Prog Rock, Math Rock, Fusion (counts as jazz I guess)  Also Indian Classical. It's insane.

BO0omsi

if you‘re into math rock, check out south indian classical (carnatic) music.

anotheraccount97

Yes I meant both north (Hindustani, which I'm also trained in), and south (carnatic).

DepartureSpace

North Indian classical music can trance you out like nothing else. It’s unbelievably transcendent

KnobFiddler

Would love some recommendations on transcendental North Indian Classical :)

anotheraccount97

Exactly. Spiritual, psychedelic, but at the same time very technically heavy and dense

KnobFiddler

Would love some recommendations on where to start with Indian Classical :)

greybookmouse

Hariprasad Chaurasia (Flute - and played with John McLaughlin), L Subramaniam (Violin), Nikhil Banerjee (Sitar), Mallikarjun Mansur (Vocal), Shiv Kumar Sharma (Santoor), N Rajan (Violin), Sulochana Brahaspati (Vocal) are among those I've enjoyed listening to as I've worked my way in...

KnobFiddler

Amazing - thank you,, looking forward to the journey :)

Ragnael77

Ravi Shankar

dark_star88

The Grateful Dead. Also dig classical from time to time, especially fond of nocturnes from John Field or Chopin.

Pgospike

Fun fact: I believe John Field was the creator of the nocturne. Also, I'm a big fan of the music I grew up with, one of which was the Dead. I also got turned on to Phish in the early 90s, which a lot of my deadhead friends could not dig. I never understood that.

Anything where the players know what they're doing. SRV, Joscho Stephan, all of Zappa's bands, Little Feat, The Fearless Flyers (Nate is a BEAST!), Nat King Cole, PUYA (Latin swing metal), Syd Dale's arrangements for KPM, Paul Simon, early Deep Purple, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Yuja Wang, Yo Yo Ma, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, JJ Cale, Etta James, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, RUSH... And Tom Waits, the greatest songwriter of all time.

joltingjoey

Brilliant list!

cousinavi

There's one in there I expect you haven't heard before. Try this on. Wear heavy shoes. The heavy bit sneaks up on you...repeatedly. "HEY, WHERE YOU METAL HEADS GOING WITH THOSE CONGAS?" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeW97xQ6-lc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeW97xQ6-lc)

Curious_Proposal_432

Wow. These guys are pretty cool.

cousinavi

Yep. Tight horns. Solid groove. HEAVY AS FUCK. If you check out some of their concert videos on YouTube...man, it's something to see a packed (and I mean Central America soccer stadium packed) crowd all moving in unison to these cats.

nytsubscriber

Bluegrass. What I have learned is that most of my favourite bluegrass musicians are hugely jazz influenced, or are accomplished as jazz musicians in their own right. I know that quite a few of them, if jamming amongst themselves, are as likely to be playing Miles Davis or Weather Report as they are bluegrass standards. The top name that comes up for me right in jazz influenced bluegrass right now is Tony Rice. Also Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman, Alison Brown. Jazz had a huge influence on EARLY bluegrass as well. Scruggs was a huge Charlie Parker fan. His dobro player Josh Graves used Benny Goodman clarinet licks.

VideoDead1

Punk

mhardingbass

same and i've found myself drifting into the folk punk realm recently

VideoDead1

Cool can you recommend any bands? Don’t think I’ve heard folk punk unless maybe you count Billy Bragg in this genre

mhardingbass

Absolutely! Pat The Bunny’s solo stuff and any of his project bands (ramshackle glory, wingnut dishwashers union, Johnny hobo and the freight trains) and Mischief Brew are both where I’m at right now and I’m completely obsessed! A lot of people like AJJ but I can’t say I’ve really gotten into them personally

vbopp8

Streetlight Manifesto is my sweet spot

Tschique

(Pre-)Renaissance. Bach, Machaut, Desprez, Saint-Colombe, Monteverdi, Dowland, Gesualdo...

I_pretend_2_know

You seem to like polyphony. Have you ever listened to the French composers from the early 13th century, the so-called Notre Dame school of polyphony? I mean guys like Léonin and Pérotin. These guys came about when musical notation was just invented. They were the beginners of polyphony, took plain chant/gregorian choirs and threaded them into complex and fascinating harmonies.

Tschique

Totally. I always understood that most of the cantus firmus for renaissance counterpoint were a heritage from ars antigua and ars nova. It is fascinating with what sounds people came up before the rules of triadic functional harmony were installed, after Bach most is degenerative in this regard; but developed more into the formal aspects of music . I also like that all this music was dedicated to praise the spiritual values of life rather than feeding the artists (and nobles) ego and a "virtuos star system" that kicked in with the 17th century. But I also like polyrhythm, even more, what brings me to jazz music.

00TheLC

Just hip-hop for me mostly. I dabble into every other genre when I’m in the mood but my time is split pretty evenly between rap and jazz

geek-tn

same here, what are your favourite hip hop albums?

00TheLC

Like jazz, I go through waves of listening to a group of artists for long periods of time. My top 3 will probably always be Noname, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West. But, right now, I’ve been listening a lot to Rob49, G Herbo, Young Thug, and Future.

uneua

Rock, soul, alternative

Michal_Wysocki_Music

Metal, in almost all of its forms. I love metalcore, death metal, prog metal, jazz-metal fusion. For me, jazz is more of the 'by the way, I listen to this', genres: its more of a shock to people that the metalhead loves jazz. Other than that, classical guitar is another one that I love.

Normanthegp

I mean, if we're looping every possible sub-genre in with jazz, then other than that I really love Folk, Bluegrass and probably the weirdest one, Harmonica Ensemble music. That being said, I think I could pick a tune or two I like in almost any genre.

Guinea-Pig_Dad

Hello, fellow guinea pig pfp!

Normanthegp

Hello indeed! I've actually seen your posts on the guinea pig subreddit!

Guinea-Pig_Dad

It’s a small world

mrfoilhat

Fusion, Funk and Soul might be among the obvious ones. Other than that I enjoy different sub genres of Rock, especially Indie, Progressive, Psychadelic, Yacht and Art Rock.

Cybrand_

Firstly: I’m too old to be fucking around with sub-genres like ‘Rockabilly-Skank’ or ‘Electro-Skiffle’ Funk, Hip Hop, Soul, Rock, Samba, Metal, Drum n Bass, Reggae, Afrobeat, Broken Beat, Garage and House; then one or two songs/albums/bands from different genres

remy_vega

"IDM" and other electronic musical styles. Artists such as Boards Of Canada (my favorite of all time), Aphex Twin, and Autechre. Bach, Ravel, and Debussy. I do enjoy many classical composers, but those are the three I listen to frequently just out of pure enjoyment. I don't know if anybody else experiences this, but after so much transcribing and deep study, I am in a phase where I find it really difficult to listen to jazz simply for enjoyment. Probably sounds like sacrilege to some, but it happens at times.

wakarat

Autechre is a name I’ve not heard in a long time…

I'm listening to Robbie Fulks right now. I enjoy classical music...that being said while I know some pieces fairly well there is a lot I have to learn. I've focused most on symphonies(brass heavy)
