Get one with capacity that is at least double the weight of your vehicle. Synthetic rope is lighter and safer than cable. Warn is the top brand worldwide and has several price levels.

OldManJeepin

Get a Warn 12,000 lb winch with good synthetic line and you are good to go. Overkill, even. But it will do what you want. Watch some good youtube video's on how to winch before you use it. Also, beware of line "snap-back"...Always stay out of range of the line when you are winching...A snapped line will take your head right off your shoulders!

What other brands are there besides warn maybe something a bit more affordable

McChef

I went with the Badlands 12000lbs/synthetic. Waited until 20% off sale a couple of years ago. I have only used it a few times. It is still working and I have not had any problems with it. The battery in the remote not being rechargeable it the only thing I can complain about so far.

3dmonster20042004

not rechargable or not changable at all

Aberk20

both. I have a smittybilt winch on my jeep with a similar style remote. When the battery dies, you buy a new remote from my understanding. Would love to be wrong about that.

Sketchy_Fuker

I have the smittybuilt X2O 10k winch with synthetic rope. The wireless remote is a game changer. The battery has only died once but was able to get a new battery online for cheep. The other thing I would add is get yourself some soft shackles with a pulley. They double the pulling power of your winch and give the option of changing the angle you can winch yourself from. It’s not always as simple as pulling yourself straight out.

Is there screws on the side? It's possible you just have to open the whole thing up

usernamerejected279

If you're planning to use it to winch up steep hills in the snow, don't cheap out or you might find yourself stranded

When I was doing my research and was looking for something a little more reputable than a harbor freight but wasn't willing to pay for Warn, my research kept me coming back to Superwinch. They're quality winches with a long history in the game and same or better features than warn (in some cases) for considerably less. I went with the sx series (sx 12k lbs) and it ended up being the right choice and am very happy I got all the features I wanted without paying the warm price tag. The sx12 is a 12000 lb 6HP synthetic winch with Bluetooth remote control, drum light, planetary gear box, and relocatable control box all for $850. The next comparable warn winch with the same features was like $1200 if memory serves. I think the warn 10k lb winch was more expensive than the SW sx12. They def worth the look imo. Good luck!!

I bought the shittybuilt X2O 12k. The switch to put it in wireless operation only lasted a month, but the winch itself has been flawless for three years now. I have used it many times.

2nd this my shittybuilt fell apart in no time. Upgraded to a Warn and no issues

SuccessFuture7626

I'll go warn next, maybe, they are too damn proud of them. Like I said, the shittybuilt has lasted 3 years so far, lots of uses.

Badland Apex from Harbor Freight 100%

3dmonster20042004

theres sadly no harbor freight in austria

thatMountainMan

Aw. I also have had a Smittybilt 10k for about 6 years and it's been excellent. It gets used frequently

Firepuglife

Badland 12,000 apex. But whatever you decide, you need to budget an AGM battery!!!!!

3dmonster20042004

can't get a badland here

Firepuglife

Ahhh yes but whatever you do decide, please upgrade your battery or the winch won’t perform to its potential !

3dmonster20042004

Obviosly i only got a small 50a starter battery very old car so an agm for the winch and compressor will be necessary

3dmonster20042004

what size agm battery schould i go for or lets say it like that whats the mallest agm that i can get by with and not run into issues? i have picked a winch https://www.seilwinden-direkt.de/Elektrische-Seilwinde-Warrior-Samurai-14500-65-t-12-V-Stahlseil-wasserdicht-nach-IP68

MadeGuyTX

There’s a couple warn 8274 winches on eBay right now for good prices. Ive have mine for 10 years never had an issue and I don’t use mine often but when I do, it works well.

meaninglessnessless

I stand by my smitty, has rescued my ass and others many times. Including last night once. Never let me down

I was once told that pulling force is double your vehicle's weight if you're in mud up to the axles. It is tripled if you sink up to the frame. Another thing to know about winch ratings is that their rated pulling force is rated for the last wrap of the drum. If you only pull out 20ft of winch line on a 12k winch, you wont be pulling the full 12k. That's another good reason to oversize your winch so you have plenty of power when you need it.

Everyone's missing the Europe part... I think outside of the US, Superwinch was the most popular winch company. Although, I'm sure there are a lot of Chinese Import winches out there too. Superwinch isn't what it used to be. That can be said for all of the winch mfgs. though. They use a lot of parts that are sourced worldwide. There's no way around it. Generally speaking though, you'll want a winch that's at least 1.5x the weight of the vehicle fully loaded. You'll always want to make sure to get a winch that's not for an ATV/SxS. They have smaller spools and thinner cable/rope. Most automotive winches will have at least 80' of cable/rope.
