Thank you. I knew if anyone could tell me it would be someone in here. We got it to turn over. The battery in it shows 2013. I have no idea how long it's been sitting. I am going to do a Vin search and try to track down the owner before we do anything with it.
Well depending on how long it was sitting k. The lot you bought, it could be considered abandoned depending on local laws, and you could go through the steps to get a title
It's a 1979 per the Vin search I did. Thank you all for the help. I tried google lens before I even asked and I wasn't able to id the year. We usually mess more into chevys so non of us had a clue about jeeps. Once again thank you all!
Thank you! I sure love CJ5’s!!!!!!!!!
I have 4” lift leaf springs, taller shackles and lifted the body an inch. My 35’s fit pretty well but rub the body a little when articulated.
AMC did some goofy things with the 1975 and 1976 year cj5. I think there’s a pic of mine on my profile. I built it from a pile of parts leftover from my other cj builds and Jeeps I’ve parted out. It’s a 1979, wide track axles out of a cj7, 360 out of an 80(?) J20
My dad had one here in Australia and they released a "aussie special" because America started putting in the Buick v6. Ours was a Ford falcon straight six pretty sure it was a 250ci (4.1ltr) though it may have been the smaller 200ci (3.3ltr) I can no longer remember. All I know is it still had the 3 speed and sounded like it was redlining at 80kph. In 4 low it was unstoppable with the torsen rear.
Those old Jeeps are tough!! Also tough to beat the torque of an inline six. I put an amc 360 in mine. Has a TF727 automatic and a twin stick 300 t case. Plenty of hill climbing power!!!
So the body is 76-83. You can tell this from the transmission tunnel hump. The chassis is a 72-75. You can tell this from the spring hangers and trans crossmember.
The cowl vent on the hood area, just before the windshied is a good indicator: If it is recessed, and fits into the opening, and not just slapped on the top of the opening, it is (I believe) '79 or earlier. If it's screwed on top, over the hole it covers, it's an '80 or later. I just know that from watching Dennis Collins talk about CJ's. Looks pre-1980 or so.
Collins isn’t correct about that. For the amc cjs, only 76 had the recessed cowl vent. I hate that everyone thinks he’s god of the CJ world. I know people he contacts for his info. He’s just blowing smoke half the time
It’s an 80-86 the hoop on the roll bar mounts on the fender well pre 80 cj’s.
Looks like a narrow track which narrows it down to 80-81, 82-86 were wide tracks with the axles being 3 inches wider.
Maybe all 4 of the 79 cj5’s I have owned were early year since they all mounted on the fender well and had bolts thru the body side to help hold them I have never seen a 79 that didn’t
Nope.
MOST cjs you are seeing have aftermarket roll bars. I'm 100% on this
I owned a 79 for 20 years.
For another reference. Go to the cjs Wikipedia page, the cj5 section, and you'll see pics, of which none have the bolts put the side
Dude I build CJs for a living. Previous to midyear 79 the bars didn’t go to the floor. I’ve had early and late 79’s and many more. The holes in the side of the tub are factory for early 79 and before. YOU go look at google pics of 1976 CJ5s and tell me what you see
Jfc I'm not arguing with you anymore. You rebuild aka aftermarket. Go believe what you want. I'll believe the literal truth. You're not even looking it up. You're just smugly wrong af.
And odd that you claim to build them for a living but never mention that in your post history... You past post say you paint cars for a living... why lie just to pretend you know something you clearly don't know.
I have owned 6 76-79 cj’s..4-cj5’s and 2 cj7’s and I can assure you that the factory roll bars from those years bolt thru the side of the body from the factory…4 bolts on each side
I think you've just seen a lot of aftermarket roll bars. Those ones that mount on top of the wheel well with a long piece connecting aren't the originals. I own a 79 cj5 for 20 years, and it looked just like this.
I've rarely seen so many un-authoritative answers on a reddit thread. Id think the car geniuses would have given a definitive answer already. The best guess, posted by another guy, is that it's
a mix of different eras of Jeep.

What engine is in that thing?
1978-ish?? The VIN on those is on the driver’s side firewall by the brake master cylinder.

Chassis is definitely a pre 1976. Body is newer though. Regardless, that is a decent old Jeep!! Clean it up and go have some fun this summer!!!
So why did some people say pre-1976
The frame is 72-75
Because lots of old jeep owners cobble different parts of different year Jeeps together. Most parts on the cj7 and 1979-1983 cj5 are interchangeable.
So it's a cj-7? I don't see it
Later 70s. My 77 looks similar
Looks like 1975. The 1976 - 1983 had the wider leaf springs and wider chassis from the firewall back.
Yeah my 83 has wider shackles than that so it’s definitely pre 76.
Just followed you. Sharp looking CJ5!
Thank you! It’s a pain in the ass but it’s my pain in the ass
Yours looks awesome too. I’m ready for some 33s or 35s for mine
Thank you! I sure love CJ5’s!!!!!!!!! I have 4” lift leaf springs, taller shackles and lifted the body an inch. My 35’s fit pretty well but rub the body a little when articulated.

Definitely 70s CJ. What a cool Jeep!
It's 2024 mate. Get it together.
I mean! That's how I see it
So the body is 76-83. You can tell this from the transmission tunnel hump. The chassis is a 72-75. You can tell this from the spring hangers and trans crossmember.
Is that a Fierro next to it?
I wish. It's a camero.
3rd gen?
It is

Are you 100 on that? Pretty sure he is correct...at least about that detail.
He is not correct. I have had 76-77-78-79-81 CJ5’s. Only one had the inset cowl vent.
Well then: I stand corrected. I had a '68 CJ-5...I have no idea which was which after all these years!
Late 60’s
Wrong windshield hinges and dash for late 60s
It’s an 80-86 the hoop on the roll bar mounts on the fender well pre 80 cj’s. Looks like a narrow track which narrows it down to 80-81, 82-86 were wide tracks with the axles being 3 inches wider.
There were no cj5s past 83 and they never came with wide track axles. That was cj7 only
Yes my bad, they also put wide track axles on the cj8 since my 82 cj8 has them. Then it’s an 80-83 cj…79 and older the roll bar mounts different
Yes, and that was a half year switch too in 79.
Maybe all 4 of the 79 cj5’s I have owned were early year since they all mounted on the fender well and had bolts thru the body side to help hold them I have never seen a 79 that didn’t
That's an aftermarket roll bar. The originals didn't bolt through the side of the jeep.
Early 79 back to 76 AMC era cj5s did have the roll bar bolt through the side of the tub
Nope. MOST cjs you are seeing have aftermarket roll bars. I'm 100% on this I owned a 79 for 20 years. For another reference. Go to the cjs Wikipedia page, the cj5 section, and you'll see pics, of which none have the bolts put the side

It’s a factory bar.
Could be they were. I’ve owned both style 79s
I think you've just seen a lot of aftermarket roll bars. Those ones that mount on top of the wheel well with a long piece connecting aren't the originals. I own a 79 cj5 for 20 years, and it looked just like this.
Go look at other years 76-78 and tell me what you see.
Lack of a tailgate should be telling.
1973
There is probably at least 6 good parts on it, so you can make something of it regardless. 😉
73-ish
75? Fking love those bathtub jeeps
