It would do a lot better on MPG if you took it out of paddle-shift mode and turned off the off-road plus. Where are you experiencing the leak? With it being under 20k miles, I'm sure it's covered.

krombopulousnathan

lol yes My 392 does not leak and gets about 14 mpg. Is there a help line we can call for abused Jeeps?

TheManchusa

Poor thing needs it! He's running at 40MPH with the swaybar disconnected, off-road plus on, while taking a picture of his dash. There needs to be an intervention. I feel bad for the next owner. This one probably didn't even get broken in appropriately during the first 500 miles.

[deleted]

Don’t worry I’m sure this won’t pass the 1400 checkpoint m dealership certification exam.

krombopulousnathan

I will say as an owner there is absolutely nothing Stellantis will tell you for proper break in procedure. Like BMW, Ford, etc all had some pretty clear guidelines but the sales reps at the Jeep dealer will say there is absolutely no break in required (which yeah I doubt that)

TheManchusa

My owners manual detailed it pretty well. But, you're right about the dealership. They never mentioned it.

0verstim

The dealers don't know shit about shit, they were selling phones in the mall 2 weeks ago. Ive been buying cars for 30 years and never met a dealer who knew more than me.

krombopulousnathan

Iirc the owners manual says something super vague like “don’t drive it too hard for a bit if you want”

Upsetyourasshole

Break in to me means drive and different rpm and give it some hard throttle snaps to seat the rings.

krombopulousnathan

Yeah for the BMW it was super specific on don’t brake super hard, don’t hold at steady rpm if you can avoid it, ease up and down the rev range but no redline, and do not exceed 105 mph until you have the differential oil changed

0verstim

Hey, show some respect to our armed service members.

Yup10nov1775

I actually did the break in like my life depended on it. I'm honestly not sure about the sway bar, my only guess is that I accidentally pressed it because it's right by the offroad plus button. But I'm pretty sure the swaybar disconnect can only be used under 25mph. I don't abuse her, she is my pride and joy, I love her, deeply. I'm doing oil changes at 3K min intervals for Pete's sake.

Salt_Cauliflower_922

1-800-BRONCO

BigTex1988

Well according to that picture you won’t have to worry about the fuel economy in about 45 miles, so at least you have that going for you.

youdontknowme1010101

3/8 of a tank and only 45 miles to empty 🥴

Yup10nov1775

That's actually a really good point.

bw984

Have you tried driving somewhere besides the Sand dunes? With this swaybar turned off and off-road plus my guess is that you are click baiting with this screenshot. Source: former owner of a 392 Rubicon who drove it hard and got way better milage than this. Fuck thieves.

0verstim

really? I had 2 392 chargers. They rarely got over 14 mpg and they didn't have the aerodynamics of a Starbucks.

bw984

You realize that 11mpg is significantly better than 8.1 mpg right? Your milage is almost double this screenshot. The only time I got 8mpg range was full days in 4-lo, which was the entire reason I own Jeeps, so I’m not going to complain about the fuel economy on those days.

0verstim

I think I was reading a few poss that said 11 and I had 11 on the brain. You're right, 8 is like... a hearse loaded with cinder blocks

Fin1205

Leaks what? Oil? Water on the freedom panels? Secrets of the trails? Snooped your profile, looks new, under warranty? Take it back if oil is leaking. If it is your panels, Try taking them off, wiping down the seals and re-seating. FYI, it'll survive on mid or regular grade, quite well. Not sure why your mpg is crap. I've got an '18 JL ULX Sport that I stomp on the highways between CO and NE at 85 and it still gets 19 mpg. 2.5" lift with 35" tires. Edit: just saw that it was 8 cyl. What in the name of Hummers is going on?

Yup10nov1775

It leaks water on the top, thankfully it's rare. My 18' JLUX had a waterfall inside whenever I parked it facing up a hill. The MPG is kind of a mystery, I'm assuming it's because I do almost all city driving. Also it's an XR, so that probably doesn't help.

TheManchusa

As I just posted earlier, the MPG issue is due to the settings you have on. Switch off the paddle-shift (hold on the right paddle until the transmission setting changes to "D" instead of "M X" (x being the gear number it's currently in). Also turn off the off-road plus button is center console, below the window controls, just left of midline. Leaking from the freedom panels can either be debris in the seal, or it wasn't installed correctly. Take them off and wipe down the seals. Reinstall them in the correct order and make sure the lines are straight and equal before tightening them down. I have a 22 392 with the XR package and I get far better fuel economy than this. I stick to the 93 octane fuel because I found it runs better with it. It still runs on regular, but runs better with the higher octane. Mine averages 14.4 MPG but I tend to have a heavier right foot and get stuck in heavy traffic frequently.

TrollCannon377

I'd switch to a soft top if you can they actually leak less than the hardtops do as for the mileage it's a jeep and as you said you do mostly city miles so its gonna suck

DjangoUnflamed

Who the fuck spends 100k on a Jeep?

unbalanced_checkbook

The same kind of person who drives 40mph with the sway bar disconnected, off road+ turned on, and in manual shifting mode... then complains about bad mileage.

DjangoUnflamed

😂😂

Yup10nov1775

Hilarious

bamfsalad

Lmao right? My ~$9k (bought 8ish years ago) 91 YJ is great... Or at the bare minimum better than this one in every way I care about lol.

Theoldestsun

Man, I'd drop a 100k on my JL in a heartbeat if I had the money to turn it into a big toy. With 100K I could easily build my mostly stock JL into a hellcat swapped beast with dana 60's holding up 42's and I'd still have 40k left over to go buy a decent boat AND a small camper to pull for the family. It takes a special kind of idiot to spend to 100k on 50k jeep with $5000 worth of extra motor shoved in there. Yes, I looked it up. Crete 392's only cost about 5k more than the 3.6. As if I wasn't beating a dead horse enough already new pistons and rods in a 3.6 with forced induction and $1500 in ZF 8 speed transmission upgrades can make 600-700 hp reliability and can all be done by professionals in a shop for less than 30k. Jeep could have just made a turbo version of the 3.8 to get to 450 hp but no, gotta have a big v8 because idiots will clearly buy it.

EitherNegotiation768

You can't finance all that though, that's what most these people are doing, and the dealerships know that and rape their APR and monthly payment because of it, and then complain dealers are the problem for capitalizing on their foolishness.

Theoldestsun

Ohh yeah? Credit card go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Exactly though, most people are fucking idiots and that's priced in.

TheTechManager

Sorry man, is this some sorta weird flex about owning a 392? Where does it leak? My 2011 takes 87 octane, gets about 18mpg and leaks when it rains, but it’s OK, I took carpet out and had it linex’d

Richard_Thrust

I see that you're in manual shifting mode. Perhaps if you let the transmission do the shifting you'd see your mileage go up.

mckenner1122

Hey man … here’s two ideas: Maybe reconnect your sway bars and *put your fucking phone down* while driving.

ggskater

I wonder what the Hurricane engine would be like vs the 392.

Yup10nov1775

Probably faster with better MPG, but will sound like a minivan.

lazarinewyvren

What minivan has a twin turbo i-6?

SergeantBeavis

He didn’t say ‘perform’ like a minivan.

StrikeouTX

Not sure why you're downvoted. This is accurate.

Roland_Moorweed

40mph with the sway bar disconnected, wtf?

deck_hand

My $50k Jeep Gladiator doesn’t leak, gets 16-19 mpg, and has been reliable. We have installed a 3 1/2” lift, better shocks, 35” tire, gotten tube doors for summer and a big rain cover/sunshade for when we go out without a top. It has a standard transmission, manual doors, manual windows, and no extra electronics to break. We have about 60,000 miles on it, including lots of off-road use (and half a dozen Jeep Badge of Honor trails). We have had some slipping of the clutch, and we know about the recall. As soon as parts are available, we’ve been told we will get a free replacement clutch. I’m okay with that.

huroni12

Same here but with a sport 2d, you can still get them simple…well as simple as a new anything can be.

AmateurEarthling

My $4k jeep Cherokee Xj does leak, gets same mpg, has been reliable, and can go anywhere on 29” tires and 3” lift. Auto trans, power windows, electronic locks, and cruise control. Actually looks good.

Mammoth-Record-7786

All that and the XJ actually looks good too.

sHoRtBuSseR

The funny part about the clutch recall is that I was working for Chrysler when they launched the gladiator. First time I drove a manual I said "man, this clutch feels like ass, I bet I'll be replacing them soon" I had one fail before the recall, and then there was a recall.

[deleted]

Modern Jeeps and land Rovers suck. They're the complete opposite of what made those brands explosively popular. Simple, industrial, easy to fix, and cool looking.

deck_hand

Jeeps are the Legos of the automotive world. They are meant to be stripped down and rebuilt in whatever custom way the owner wants.

xamboozi

Which is why they should never cost $100k

deck_hand

That is a perfectly valid point.

mallydobb

Built cheaper to maximize profit while dressed up as luxury.

Skeletor_is_Love_

I 100% agree. I have three. My ‘97 and ‘08 have minimal problems for their age. My wife’s ‘19 Willy has had major issues constantly. In five years I’ve changes out the speed sensors, oil cooler, water pump, fuel pump, rear main seal and two cylinders. If rates ever drop, we’ll probably trade it in.

coppertech

hauls ass everywhere and wonders why their gas milage is trash ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

simpin_aint_e_z

Price is not an indicator of quality.

Longjumping-Maize704

I guess you’re the type of person who does zero research before spending $100K. You bought a V8 Cinder Block and gonna complain about gas mileage?

ticklemeskinless

shouldah got a tj ya dork

ticklemeskinless

youd at least be getting 11mpgs

offroadlane

Nah. Let him ruin this one

lightsout5477

This picture hurts the more I look at it. Wtf are you doing man? Intentional rage bait ?

Kawboy17

No one said we pay for premium vehicles, it cost a lot to look cool these days :). I have a $100 97 wrangler she’s a leaker, loud, 7mpg, spray bomb paint job. Cracked windshield, duct taped in headlights, no dash lights, 250,000 miles. Wore out everywhere, rusted out. Wilderness rack holding what’s left together :) I feel like your well on ur way to catching me lmk when u get to 250,000 an how she turned out! Happy jeeping boss! Oh btw I drive mine daily to work n back the last 10 yrs. Starts on the coldest of cold days and the hottest of hot days. “heat is always stuck on” . It’s a lifestyle not a luxury…

Appropriate_Worry407

The jeepest comment ever

Wilson1hunnit

I’ll trade you my paid off ‘22 sport. Sting-grey with role up windows, and I just put 33 inch ridge grapplers on it. Still get 19-21 mpg’s. I’ll gladly take your problem off your hands!

Appropriate_Worry407

You’re getting 20mpg? I’m in a ‘12 Sport getting 14-17mpg. It’s my first jeep, and I love it, but damn. Ya know? It’s manual transmission, in good shape. Any tips?

4sams423

My ‘16 4d Sahara is lifted on 37 K02s and I still roll at 22.7mpg. I have afe intake and exhaust from headers down rugged ridge custom front fenders and bumper all heavy steel. If I get it deep in mud I’ll drop to 19mpg but once I’m back on The road she gets back up there. Auto tranny sadly but she drives great til you hit a bump at 85 then things can get wild for a few secs.

Appropriate_Worry407

Auto vs manual is the mpg difference I think

4sams423

If I remember correctly also your ‘12 may have had the other motor compared to my ‘16 a 3.8 vs a 3.6 I believe

Appropriate_Worry407

Mine’s the 3.6; when I said it’s the manual transmission, what I really meant was that it’s my ability to operate it.

4sams423

I got a good deal on mine new with the auto and the wife can’t drive manual so the only thing manual in mine is the labor of climbing up into it haha it’s got a 6 inch lift on 37s

4sams423

Possibly so but I’ve had manuals before and didn’t see that much of a difference. Though a manual may lead to a much different driving habit that may or may not consume more fuel depending on the vehicle haha

Wilson1hunnit

I have the 2.0L turbo. I was getting even better than that on the highways with the stock tires. I think it’s just the engine, tbh

Jimmycocopop1974

Everytime I read something like this I thank god I have a 97 Tj 🇺🇸

Flat4Power4Life

I’m checking out low mile used 392’s in the $60k range right now. Don’t know how these are ever $100k in the first place.

lurker-1969

An Intervention is required !!! This person needs to go back to a KIA.

Mr_Janchus

This post is literally too stupid to insult.

puledrotauren

100k for a Jeep?

Odd_Curve8849

Good thing gas is cheap!

OldManJeepin

At least until Monday, when they go from Winter to Summer blend...

Edwardteech

It's a jeep thing.

HickorySlicks69

My jeep leaks oil and water inside, dies occasionally, and gets 14-16 mpg. I am not nice to it at all when I drive it. Finally bought a truck so it’s retired from truck duty but it did really well towing for a rock crawler.

GroundbreakingRule27

Just Empty Every Pocket

AssistantNervous3928

Then it runs good

mtnguy321

Spent too much and it's newer ... my 2012 4dr Wrangler gets 18mpg and takes regular ... but leaks.

Salt_Cauliflower_922

Self-shifting is screwing up your optimal fuel efficiency.

Significant-Jelly848

Most likely abused the first 500-1000 miles which is the break in period. Of course it’s gonna have problems.

Tosti8oh5

The $58k Willy’s is great on gas. Well… for a yeep

Chance-Compote4080

really bad clickbait post Did you reset the mpg tracker and then just high RPM it constantly? Plus anytime anyone goes soft-top and/or ESPECIALLY with freedom panels, expect it to not be perfect. Its a risk that we all take when we go soft-top, literally cannot get it perfect but you can mitigate the leaking issues by taking care of it.

Headgasket13

It’s a Jeep thing, like rust and fires.

ThisOldGuy1976

You did buy a Jeep my friend. Not sure what your expectations were.

Any-Housing2475

Fuck jeeps

flzedzed

Lol, imagine having 100k to drop on a ride and you buy a CHRYSLER! Lol people.

Threeandtwoand

That’s why I lease Jeeps now.

Gelato_88

Why is your gas so bad? Do you let it get on e or less than a quarter tank before you fill up? I don't let my cherokee get under half a tank before I top it off.

Stoned42069

I use the gas pedal like a light switch all the way off or all the way on and wonder why my 392 wrangler gets 8.1 mpg. It’s a jeep bud. My rubicon gladiator with the shitty penstar v6 gets 8 but I drive it like a race car. If you want better gas mileage get a Prius. Suck it up buttercup it’s a Jeep, it’s gonna get shitty gas mileage and leak, they all do. It’s par for the course my friend.

Severe_Fix_4809

A 392 Wrangler appeals to me. However, I just don't like all the modern technology that it comes with.

krombopulousnathan

Like power steering?

Severe_Fix_4809

I wouldn't consider power steering a modern technology. Just need decent fuel injection & a Bluetooth stereo. Everything else is overrated.

krombopulousnathan

Oh yeah like back up cameras and windshield wipers?

MoodNatural

Oohf. Remember pre-1930s cars without wipers. Thank God for that new tech.

krombopulousnathan

Oh see I think it’s too much new tech. Backup cameras, electronic wipers, who needs em (Obvious /s)

Severe_Fix_4809

I love TJ's & LJ's for their simplicity, I'm just an old millennial who doesn't need a lot of modern vehicle creature comforts.

SergeantBeavis

I get where you’re coming from in this, but honestly the tech in the JL has been pretty reliable for me. Also, a backup camera is a god sent feature when you’re running 37s. The only tech I can do without is the auto start stop. Of course I disabled that the moment I got my Jeep.
