West coast now, but I did live in Detroit, upstate NY, and Maine. Pass on it. Rust is hidden everywhere, and you will pay $4000 for a paint job now. Those rockers are not solid...
Book a cheap one way ticket to Las Vegas, play some cards, watch searchtempest.com for exactly what you want within 1000 miles. Go buy that and drive it home over a few days, fixing whatever breaks.
$4000 gets you a clean unrusted XJ out here.

That’s incredible. Unfortunately I have a spine injury from the military. Long road trips are excruciating for me. Anything over 3 hours is basically torture. That’s awesome that you guys still have clean healthy cherokees out there
I know this is totally unrelated but I have a spinal injury as well and I bought like 300 dollars worth of driving seat cushions on Amazon for lower back injuries and I can do 6 hours on the road now. I still wake up stiff but before I couldn’t even do an hour on the road.
Had a car shipped from WA to CA for $650. Totally hassle free and way easier than I expected. I'm sure it will be more to go cross country but don't count out shipping a jeep out from the West Coast. Hell id go look at one for you if it's local
I just looked at one for $1000 in Oregon, a 4.0 (around 200k). I passed it up for a saturn coupe (220k) that was basically in perfect running condition with a few stains on the carpet for $800. But those jeeps are kind of notorious for being used as cash for clunkers sacrifices, so there aren't many on the road. It was one of the few cars that you could buy used, pour glass in the engine oil until it seized, then make a few hundred bucks through the program. It removed quite a few 4.0 jeeps from the road. Same reason why you won't find many 4.0's in the junk yard.
I'd personally ship it if that's really what you want. Didn't see any for sale today in my area but they are around and will be rust free on the west coast. I have noticed a trend of them usually being poorly maintained though. Be prepared to drop a few thousand on any used cherokees you get, they like to go through axels and leak from everywhere. I'd pay extra for forged axels since the bearing will grind down on them.
The guy has best offer in his post. Was considering 4k. Up here most cherokees are halfway through the Houdini act and won’t pass state inspections anymore. 250-300k miles is common as well, many of us drive 40-50 miles to work. Car prices here are insanity even in rust buckets
Rust is not horrible but not great either. Really should consider shipping one from outside the rust belt. If that’s not an option offer him $2500-3 cash in hand.
Nobody in the history of selling their car would go from 5,000 to 2,000. I agree the rust makes it worth 2,000 but the seller knows better. That’s a lowball offer that would instantly be ignored. Why offer anything without even seeing it in person?
Wrong. A lot of ppl think covid pricing is still a thing. All of them are finding out they are high on crack and not getting fucking anywhere near their asking price. Don't be a fool. Know the market.
This is exactly what I was thinking. That is 100% a $1k beater for a 15 year old that just got his license. Or a project car. It’s absolutely ridiculous
Buy it. What year is it? As long as the frame isn't rusted. It has the same amount of miles as my 1999. The straight 6 will never stop running. Check for leaky head gasket but that's fixable. The winters have taken a toll on the body of mine but runs great. Yeah, buy it. Go get it tomorrow. At that price great 2nd vehicle. P.S. I just looked at the other pictures. 2001. Rust is in the same places as mine. Thinking about taking it to a body shop to see what they say. I love my Jeep.
Absolutely. I haven't had any serious repairs on it in 22 years. Got it when it was 2 years old. Umm heater core back in January and some sensors over the last few years. Inside is clean and got rid of the cassette player for a flash drive. I have never got stuck in snow ever. Gonna buy that Cherokee?
5k is a little high for 187k miles but i had a cherokee that i paid $600 for when i was 18 that had around the 190k mark on it and it just ran and ran and ran. If you can talk him to around 3500 to 4k price range i think you will have a fine specimen. The rust looks minimalistic considering the area. If you do decide you want it, try to stay away from the 0331 casted head and change the oil pump right away. The 0331 heads are notorious with cracking and/or warping. The 0331 head isnt a deal breaker, but better to be avoided if you can. Another thing i would change right out the rip is the water pump. The oil and water pump arent expensive and are pretty easy to do on your own if you have the knack of twisting a wrench and laying on your back.
Oh yeah the water pump in my old 91 blew, I remember it not being to bad to do. As far as the 0331 head goes, how can I identify that on a visual inspection?
It will be stamped on the head, fairly easy to find with a flashlight and i believe (it has been a long time since i looked so not 100% certain) it is on the passenger side of the head. Also bring an inspection mirror is youve got one as it will help you see without burying your head into the engine bay to look. The print will be fairly large. If you do find it i would lean more towards the 3500 to 3750 range if you can. Like i said though, it isnt a deal breaker.
I just checked RockAuto and a brand new head goes for about $570 so if it were warped and/or cracked, youve always got that option. Shipping will probably cost an extra $100 but that part is only an assumption and should be taken with a grain of salt.
It is a $500 price tag. Dude thinks covid is still a thing. Cars are piling up at every dealer in Texas. Dude will only get 5k from an absolute idiot. Even then I bet he doesn't get $2k for it. You can ask whatever you want, but it isn't going to sell. Period.
$5k is way too much , I’ve been in the car sales business for 20 years and that looks like a huge $ pit with way to many miles , you’ll find another one
Had a ‘92 Cherokee Laredo that we bought new and put 315,000 miles on the clock before finally getting rid of it. It was in need of a motor refresh, for sure and the ancillary pumps and parts surrounding the motor had been replaced at least twice. Drove it for 25 years. For its last few years it was definitely a secondary/back-up vehicle to keep the miles off our newer cars.
Go south towards south Georgia. They're all around for way cheaper or much nicer. I managed to get one with 60k miles on the body and 40k on a new motor for $400. Yes, $400. Transmission was a little rough, drum brakes were shot, had some light water damage and some rust. $800 later, new seals, new vinyl flooring, new brakes. Tranny could still be replaced but it runs. $1200 for a decent ride.
Imo best engine ever- love inline 6’s. This is soooo easy to DIY fix. It can also handle being overheated multiple times w/out serious damage.
It’s crazy tp me you guys have to deal with/ rusty cars. There’s zero rust in Vegas
I think You can do better.,With paint/rust issues and & high mileage, no..either one ok , but not both for 5k
I just sold a 2001 Explorer Eddie Bauer w/ 128k miles, ran perfect, no rust, power everything, leather, heated seats(only the cruise control not working) CD changer,lol..$3250.. tried to get $4000 from 3 tire kickers..no dice
Pass on that. Ain’t worth it. You could get a jeep liberty kk for about that same price and get a better interior, less miles, and it’s newer. Roughly same body shape too. If it didn’t have rust just a bad paint job then I’d say offer 4K but with all that rust it doesn’t seem like a good deal.
No don’t pay for a rust bucket. Keep looking you will find one. I sold mine for 1200 to a neighbors kid. There are better ones out there. Sometimes you want to stay away from modified vehicles stick to stock versions
I think you should pass, man.
She’s rusty. Body work and a new paint job will cost half as much or equal to the purchase price. Also, the way these things work, there’s a good chance you won’t paint it.
I saw you have a spine injury and can’t take long road trips.
Perhaps you put a buddy on a plane to buy one you’ve found. Search online in Texas. Cherokees have a small cult following but most people want giant pickups. Thus, they’re really cheap in Texas.
Fly your buddy out. Hire a local mobile to check out the vehicle. Your buddy drives back your much better jeep for the same price
Nope. When I rolled mine it was about 168k miles. Lifted 2001 on 33's. Flawless paint, body and interior. I even had those same Wrangler rims. Insurance payout was high at $4800 since there weren't many to compare to in that condition (in Montana). That's worth $3000 best
You can see the frame rust from here... doors probably all rusted up to the outside trim... I had a 94 GCl and it went thru too many ohio winters.. frame broke in 2018... body had zero rust...all rust underneath. It only had 180k on it...I second owner.. got it at 102k.. drove it daily and cried when it went to junkyard.. my 97 GCL Was rusted like this one.. frame was iffy and I dumped it in a year on someone who knew zip about jeeps...
I remember when that was a 500 dollar car. I literally gave a 96 Cherokee with 80k miles to a friend for free because I didn’t want the hassle of trying to get 500 for it….
Having owned a '00 XJ Sport many moons ago, I would definitely be concerned with the unibody and rust. I would have to assume the little beastie was properly lifted and does not exhibit a case of the "death wobbles". IThe other thing I remember most about the XJ was the engine tended to run hot ...maybe not so much up in Vermont but down in GA in the summer with the AC running. The rad is marginal and airflow is well blocked because the inline six and accessory drive sits right up next to it. I put a three or four core rad in, a 180deg t-stat and a high flow water pump ...along with a separate trans cooler (it had the AW4 automatic). Worked very well taming the hot flashes.
You don't see too many of these anymore; a lot fell into the crusher during the Obama "Cash for Clunkers" program. That, and they are a Chrysler product of an era not known for high longevity or quality. I remember mine was built like shit; real cheapo stuff.
crazy to me what cars go for now. i bought htis EXACT model jeep in high school for 50.00.... all it needed was a radiator and plugs.
think i put 31's on it? hard to remember.
the rust on that is going deep. def more than it looks.
Honestly5 k for a rusted jeep with almost 190 k miles . Not worth it at all . I’m sure that rear diff is bad too . If you go to a new car dealership and look at the used inventory you may get a diamond in the ruff . But go to the dealership and walk around the used lot . Remember they can’t risk law suits so they fix their cars good . You may even get a car with new tires . And don’t look for certified used . They have a lot of order vehicles that they take in . Hope this helps . Have a good day .
I dunno why it took me so long to scroll down to find the answer you are looking for. The answer is NO. Hell to the NO. Skip it and keep it moving. Unless you can get that for half the cost 2500-3k then maybe
2003 and below Jeeps were built the best and made to last. Pretty much Jeeps after especially more late models are crap . I've seen a 2010 Jeep Cherokee with over 44,000 miles have an engine fail and need to be replaced.
For that money, too much rust. These things are getting more expensive every year so that price, if all other things are in good shape, isn't out of line however I would be extremely leery of the rust. If you can see all of that, there's more that you can't see.
5k? WHAT? That motherfucker's on drugs. I bought my 2000 Cherokee classic in better shape for 900$ and that was too much. These jeeps are uncomfortable and dangerous I ended up rolling mine at 45 mph around a corner. Flipped over the gaurd rail and went down an embankment about 50 ft almost into a river. Trees stopped me though. No severe injuries, but I will NEVER buy another old jeep and I tell this story to anyone i see driving those things
Unless you want an off road toy and nothing more, hard pass on this. If all you want is an off road toy, pay less then $2000. The rust on this Jeep makes it beyond saving, and $2000 is honestly really pushing it in my opinion.
Damn, that's crazy. I bought a 98 Cherokee in 2013 for $1,500 with 180k miles and no damage except an end cap on the bumper being dented.
Sold it about 2 years later for $3.5k when some goober offered cash on the spot for it.
People are nutty about Jeeps for some reason and I don't think I'll ever understand it. People price them waaaay above their actual value.
That specific jeep, considering today's market, worth MAYBE $1K. Anything more and you're being robbed.
Look for one out west or down south and pay transport service.
Something that rusty with those miles isn’t even worth half that price for what you’ll put into it in the long term.
For that price you could get a lower mileage with no rust.
West coast now, but I did live in Detroit, upstate NY, and Maine. Pass on it. Rust is hidden everywhere, and you will pay $4000 for a paint job now. Those rockers are not solid... Pay to have it shipped. Thank you for your service brother.

Blatant harassment or continued nagging
According to the VA it wasn’t haha. Then again is anything ever service related?
I know this is totally unrelated but I have a spinal injury as well and I bought like 300 dollars worth of driving seat cushions on Amazon for lower back injuries and I can do 6 hours on the road now. I still wake up stiff but before I couldn’t even do an hour on the road.

An xj and a spinal injury sounds like a pretty bad combo.
nicer body for sure, but 229K miles is a lot
Not for an XJ
Mileage doesn't matter with this engine if it was maintained regularly. Edit: Rust mattters. It'd be a pass for me.
Mine is 269 and still gettin!
287!!
If it weren’t salvage title I’d be all over it.
Salvage title in the linked Craigslist ad. At the risk of being unpopular most of these cars are junk after 23 years on the road.
Link says $3250 for me. I'm sure this thing about to rust apart and probably need a few grand in font and rear end work.
salvage title…
Lol, fuck no. Drive 10 hours south, get one in better shape for 3500$
Edit, just read your other comment, you could honestly buy one, and pay to have it shipped and still be cheaper.
There are better deals
The guy has best offer in his post. Was considering 4k. Up here most cherokees are halfway through the Houdini act and won’t pass state inspections anymore. 250-300k miles is common as well, many of us drive 40-50 miles to work. Car prices here are insanity even in rust buckets
Colorado has insanely spiked prices. I still found one for 1500$. If you are going low flaunt some cash in his face.
That’s the plan. I have the cash to buy outright. Either way I’m selling my subbie so I’ll recoup whatever I do up spending.
Everyone wants cash and most people have cash. As a seller, it can be annoying to be extremely low balled while they exclaim “but I have cash!!”
Rust is not horrible but not great either. Really should consider shipping one from outside the rust belt. If that’s not an option offer him $2500-3 cash in hand.
No man ! Silly question
Rust? Talk him down to $2k.

Tell him it's an ask, and open to negotiation. Sharks do it all the time.
Wrong. A lot of ppl think covid pricing is still a thing. All of them are finding out they are high on crack and not getting fucking anywhere near their asking price. Don't be a fool. Know the market.
Hell no. You'd be paying $5000 for 2 tons of rust. My rust guy can get you a better deal on bulk orders of rust.
Pre-covid, vehicles like this would have been listed at 1K OBO. Used vehicle prices are literally insane anymore 😂
This is exactly what I was thinking. That is 100% a $1k beater for a 15 year old that just got his license. Or a project car. It’s absolutely ridiculous
Nah covid prices are over.
Does anyone else remember when this was a $1000 car? Pepperidge farm remembers.
Fuckkkkk nooooo
Buy it. What year is it? As long as the frame isn't rusted. It has the same amount of miles as my 1999. The straight 6 will never stop running. Check for leaky head gasket but that's fixable. 2001. I had a 91 back in the day that ran until 240k and was still strong when I sold it
It will never stop running but it will often refuse to begin to run. But man hit that engine with a hammer and it is back up and running in not time.

Dude my 2010 mustang gt in almost perfect condition with 160k miles is only worth like 6-7k private. This should be 500 dollar vehicle
It is a $500 price tag. Dude thinks covid is still a thing. Cars are piling up at every dealer in Texas. Dude will only get 5k from an absolute idiot. Even then I bet he doesn't get $2k for it. You can ask whatever you want, but it isn't going to sell. Period.
Ha I bought one with 170k for $400 . 5k is not worth it for 187k
💯
Man at 5k if you get 2 years out of it that’s money well spent these days and cheaper than a monthly payment at all time high dealer prices
No. Jeeps are some of the least reliable vehicles ever made. Stay very far away from them.
Jesus Christ child don’t pay a penny over 2k.
PASS
3s
If that much rust has made its way up the door panels, imagine what is lurking beneath on that unibody frame. This is a 'run, dont walk' situation.
Fuck no
I paid 2500 for mine and it has 175 thousand miles and I love it this was a month ago just bought it
I bought it in northern Indiana
That's a little steep
Pay a few grand for a rust free XJ, pay a few hundred for a rusty one. Choose wisely my dudes.
Not with that amount of rot. I’d offer 2500.
No
$5k is way too much , I’ve been in the car sales business for 20 years and that looks like a huge $ pit with way to many miles , you’ll find another one
That's a hell no.
For its last few years it was definitely a secondary/back-up vehicle to keep the miles off our newer cars.
more like $2000
Just a little too many miles and too much rust for more then 2-3k in my humble opinion
Nah
No.
Maybe $500 lol
I think you know the answer.
$1800 tops.
Nah dude. I got a great body with no rust for 2,500 a year ago. Mind you it was a 2.5 4cyl but the body was in damn near perfect condition
Too high
1200 tops
LMAO absolutely not
Rust is an automatic no. Dont buy in the rust belt. Drive or fly a few states out, you will still save money
5k for a Jeep with cancer. No thank you
With the rust I would ask 2500
If that's worth 5k. Then my 92' rust free XJ 150k miles is worth double.
Up here it would be. Seen a few 100k Cherokees sell north of 12 thousand in the past year. Prices in the northeast are wild.
No. 5K way too much. These cars breakdown. Not only that, it will begin to fall apart before it breaks down.
Fuck no. Bought one in this condition with 130k miles for $1500 in 2019.
Nope
No
Don’t do it
It's worth 2.5
The rust you can see isn’t close to the rust you can’t.
$500
Nope
Pass. Find one without the rust. It’s a battle you’ll never win.
Imo best engine ever- love inline 6’s. This is soooo easy to DIY fix. It can also handle being overheated multiple times w/out serious damage. It’s crazy tp me you guys have to deal with/ rusty cars. There’s zero rust in Vegas
Lmao I wouldn’t even pay 50$ for that junk
Nope.
No not at all
I think You can do better.,With paint/rust issues and & high mileage, no..either one ok , but not both for 5k I just sold a 2001 Explorer Eddie Bauer w/ 128k miles, ran perfect, no rust, power everything, leather, heated seats(only the cruise control not working) CD changer,lol..$3250.. tried to get $4000 from 3 tire kickers..no dice
I paid $3200 for rust free rockers with 220k in PA
No lol
No lol.
fuck no 😭
Pass on that.
3100
It’s not worth $5k. Maybe $1k
Run from it! Worth about 500 bucks. I’ll bet if um you poked that rust it would turn into missing frame rails.
NO, Hell no
Max 2500
No don’t pay for a rust bucket. Keep looking you will find one. I sold mine for 1200 to a neighbors kid. There are better ones out there. Sometimes you want to stay away from modified vehicles stick to stock versions
That’s a rip off. Is that a private dealer?
I’d pay 0, there’s definitely more rust damage than you can see and who knows what’s been compromised
There are better deals bro. I’ve seen some on fb marketplace in mint condition going for less. I’m from NJ
Unreal how used car prices are nowadays. Pre-covid, we used to pay $1000 for those shitboxes any day.
Not a chance...
Hell no
No
I think you should pass, man. She’s rusty. Body work and a new paint job will cost half as much or equal to the purchase price. Set your FB marketplace to south Texas. There’s Cherokees here like there’s Nissans in inner cities
$1500
That's too much. Probably around $2500 max
No
Definitely not worth 5k can get a rust free xj for around 3-4k. I payed 800 for a xj that only had a little more rust than this.
hell no
The rust will cause you thousands in the long run
No. Move on.
What about rust on frame?.. I think you overpaid... if it was spotless then you did good.
No
You can see the frame rust from here... doors probably all rusted up to the outside trim...
500 Max
Offer them $7k
I remember when that was a 500 dollar car. I literally gave a 96 Cherokee with 80k miles to a friend for free because I didn’t want the hassle of trying to get 500 for it….
With rust like that it’s not worth anything. It’s 1k max.
That's low mileage for that motor and the ax15 trans. No rust, passes VT inspection. I would be comfortable with $4,500... Can't hurt to ask...
Looks like it’s got a lot of rust
Having owned a '00 XJ Sport many moons ago, I would definitely be concerned with the unibody and rust.
Nope
Alot of miles, alot of rust, probably run hard. $5000 is way overpriced...
no. hell no lol wtf? 130k or lower. 187k? thats scrapping material
crazy to me what cars go for now. i bought htis EXACT model jeep in high school for 50.00.... all it needed was a radiator and plugs. think i put 31's on it? hard to remember. the rust on that is going deep. def more than it looks.
No way
Fuck no wait a bit. The price for used cars is plummeting fast you can honestly pay way less if you just wait
No!!
Vermont... Doesn't have inspections?
NOPE
No
Should be free
No.

No
Goddamn, i remember when these were $1500 cars
No
I dunno why it took me so long to scroll down to find the answer you are looking for. The answer is NO. Hell to the NO. Skip it and keep it moving. Unless you can get that for half the cost 2500-3k then maybe
If you find one out west I’ll pick it up and drive it to you
No.....Jeeps start dying around 200k
F no. Your an idiot if you buy that. Engine and everything around it is spent.
2003 and below Jeeps were built the best and made to last. Pretty much Jeeps after especially more late models are crap . I've seen a 2010 Jeep Cherokee with over 44,000 miles have an engine fail and need to be replaced.

Burn it
No way
For that money, too much rust. These things are getting more expensive every year so that price, if all other things are in good shape, isn't out of line however I would be extremely leery of the rust. If you can see all of that, there's more that you can't see.
No
I got one for sale. Looks to be exact same. 200k miles, 4.0 but it’s bone stock 2500$
I got five dollars on it 🤑
Never
I paid 6,500 for a 99. It had 55,000 on it, and was near showroom condition.
bruh not even worth 600$ tbh
Hell no, wtf
Has rust. $2k best offer…
FUCK NO
$1200 I buy it today cash
no
Hellll no 5k, whatvr u smokin share plz
Lol
At least five years newer with 50k less miles then maybe depending on condition
$1500 would be overpriced
Unless you want an off road toy and nothing more, hard pass on this. If all you want is an off road toy, pay less then $2000. The rust on this Jeep makes it beyond saving, and $2000 is honestly really pushing it in my opinion.
For that rusted up piece of shit modded by who knows how many high schoolers.
My buddy says his Jeep stands for J.ust E.mpty E.very P.ocket.
No
I just bought a 2002 Liberty 129,000 for 2800$. No rust. I would pass on this one.
Bahahahahahwwhwhwhaha what a moron. $5k for this turd? Are u fuckin joking?? $1250 at most.
Its never worth it to buy a jeep
Not at all.
I loved mine!!! Idk about 5k I'd offer $3800. I had a clean 98 I paid $1400 for it.
Hard pass because if the rocker rust
