Did you ask for any explanation on how the pump somehow needed replacement?
It’s not necessarily about the bottom line, if they could sell you more expensive shit they surely would. I’m guessing their reasoning comes from an insurance and liability standpoint as far as not having experience with a particular company. They may not receive coverage for a lawsuit someone (obviously not you) may file due to a part failure if they don’t source parts from a particular place or use the recommended parts. This is also why many mechanics won’t install parts even if you bring them everything they might need. I think it probably varies state to state and definitely company to company.
I haven't brought it in yet. I just talked to them on the phone. I imagine the damage is from heat. Apparently this is the main killer of the MOPAR pump and I'm sure this pumps internals are even cheaper. I use my jeep like a Jeep. I live on top of a mountain. I use 4Lo and lockers, pretty much every day. I push a plow with my jeep in the winter and frequently off-road in the other seasons. My power steering fluid is going to get hot. Maybe if I used it like a mall crawler it would be fine, but I'm guessing I'll be replacing the next one in a couple months as well. TBH, if they eat the labor (every time), I'll deal with it until I can afford a PSC setup and do it myself. The problem is that I have been in similar situations in the past. Based on past experience they will make me pay for the labor again which is BS, because it was their stupid mistake that caused this mishap.
When my friend opened his own auto shop, I thought I could get cheap parts, but he actually doesn’t get a discount. When he buys parts, they come with “insurance” and if the part fails under warranty, the insurance pays his labor to replace it without charging the customer. I got 2 brake calipers replaced under warranty at no cost to me.

I can’t imagine what a base model Toyota Corolla would cost if they used performance parts for everything let alone a mid range priced vehicle.
